If you DIDN'T do Liquid Pre-Op what DID you do?
New&Improved replied to MaybeMeow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They usually ask to do liquid because you're meant to be on liquid immediately after surgery anyway... Personally I decided to stay my pre-op rather early I was lucky to find a protein shake I actually enjoyed and it kept me going for months.. After I had my bypass I literally has no desire to eat real food for months and I'm glad because I'm now below my goal weight and feeling amazing... Most surgeons will say it is best to change your eating habits prior to surgery otherwise the surgery won't work... -
I had RNY-gastric bypass on 03-16-20. I am diabetic and have been for many years. Pre-op, we were having issues maintaining my blood sugar over 70 and I received dextrose via IV twice before my surgery started. The evening after my surgery, I was still having hypoglycemia issues requiring IV intervention as I was still not able to take anything by mouth. A couple days after my surgery, I began to have issues with high blood sugar that has required me to take insulin. Up to this point my blood sugar has been managed with pills. I have never been on insulin before. I have been following my diet but continue to have super high blood sugars. Sometimes into the 300-400 range. I have never had this issue before. I went through 2 insulin pens within the month post surgery. That is 600 units of insulin. My blood sugar starts to trend up even before I eat anything. It even goes up if I eat something with no carbs in it. Has anyone else had this issue?

Lap Band to Sleeve?
Rocky_Mountain_Mama replied to Joan in Oregon's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I’m among those who were very successful with the band and loved it. I had it for over 10 years and almost overnight I developed complications. Horrific heartburn, which was quickly followed by not being able to get anything through at all and constant vomiting which brought me to the ER. The band was deflated and the hunger and weight returned. Six months (and +35 pounds) later (which happens to be just over a week ago) I underwent a revision from band to bypass. I’m 8 days post op today. I have to agree with @BayougirlmrsS, I miss my band, and if it was still working I would’ve left it alone, but given the option of no band or a revision to another procedure I’d pick revision every time. -
If you're having issues with it, then probably - a lot of people have had those removed the last few years due to complications and have gotten the sleeve or bypass instead. But if it's not bothering you, I'd be tempted to ask for his rationale.

why does he/she wanting it out? are you having issues? I think the dr's that are doing this is just trying to make more money.... (my opinion) My two cents, for what it's worth..... Leave it alone if you're not having issues. For one, getting a revision paid by insurance is damn near impossible for those of us who followed the rules and didn't gain all the weight back. I was banded in 2009 at 232#, ER band removal 2017 at 143#..... started looking for a dr to do a revision and was told over and over again..... You don't weigh enough. fast forward 2.5 years and hell trying to keep the weight off i was up to 173#..... and trust in the fact that it was hard not to gain more... i went hungry, diet pills, lax., went to crossfit 4-5 days a week and still..... and for people that say... just eat like you did when you had the band..... F U... it's is damn near impossible to do that. Two weeks after the band was gone.... hunger came back with a vengeance. I had forgotten what "hunger" felt like.... well it sucks. So after 2.5 years of nothing.... i had my mind set that i was going to Mex to have the MGB.... but as luck would have it i found a dr. 10 min away from my office. He and i talked and he agreed to do a revision... but i had to agree to the sleeve and pay 14k out of pocket.... which i did. that was 38 weeks ago today (8/28/19). Went in weighing 173#.... today i'm at 126ish...(125-127). From a size 10 to a 2-4 Do i miss my band..... EVERY DAY. Do i wish i still had her.... EVERY DAY.

Did you keep surgery a secret? What did you tell people?
BayougirlMrsS replied to FinallyLosingIt20's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
These 4 people are 3 too many and if you could get away with it, i would just tell that person that you're having hernia surgery (SX). I had Band SX in 2009 (232#) when WLS was still "taboo". I told my now ex husband, two sons, and two friends. I thought surely they could keep a secret...... NOPE. I was blindsided one day with..... Hey i heard you had WLS. I was like a deer in headlights. Then i had to fess up. When she (band) was removed in 2017 (143#) i made it no secret that it was gone. Fast forward.....2019 (173#) i decided to revise to the sleeve due to the weight gain (30#) and I had the money to do it (divorce settlement 14K). The only person that knows is my husband. Everyone was told i had Hernia SX, which was true. I did have a double hernia repair. I went in on 8/28/19 Wednesday and i was back at work on monday. by my wedding day 9/26/19, i was down 20lbs. People didn't think anything of the WL because they knew i was dieting for the wedding. Today I'm at 125-127. My weight has become a nonissue. KNOW THIS..... if you tell more than one..... it will get out. People will give you their "unsolicited" advice and or thoughts. You will get the .... Why? can't you lose it the "natural" way? I know a lot of people the SX didn't work WLS, you might die.... and the best one.... You don't weight enough for WLS..... Just a few to let you know. I love the fact that NO ONE knows this time... SO MUCH BETTER. -
Well you need to get your head right or the bypass will fail... So many ppl fail because they are not ready nor do enough research...
-
Does the surgeon have any goals for you before you have surgery? You should be using this time to learn healthy options and make changes otherwise the bypass will be a huge shock to the system...
-
Do not go near junk food at all. No excuses. Obviously you won't lose heaps if you eat unhealthy... Reflux issue you may need bypass next.. if it is so bad you can't eat.

Reflux remains after revision 😩
Tracyringo replied to itzmekc's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
You are only in a few months and I would assume you still have quite a bit of swelling, maybe after all the swelling goes down so will the acid? I sure hope so because I am going in Friday for my revision and wont be happy at all if in 6 months I am no better. Would be nice if you could update when/if things change. Good luck How much have you lost since surgery ? -
I agree with all of this. Also, if you have gastric bypass, then you also have the malabsorption factor that helps you lose weight. That's pretty much gone once you hit around the 18-24 month mark. So that can make at least some difference as well. plus when you're losing, you have the constant feedback and reward of being down a pound or two (or more) every time you step on the scale. That can be very motivating. Once you're at your goal, you don't have that anymore. You pretty much stay the same, plus or minus a couple of pounds (that is, unless you start gaining again...) and another factor - people tend to have a lot of resolve the first few months or year after surgery. That sort of wanes after awhile. Diet fatigue, you might say. It eventually sets in for a lot people.

Pregnancy before or after a revision
gomezk2 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Need the opinion of those who are planning or have planned to start a family with a bariatric procedure.. my spouse currently has RNY that was done in 2015 but she has regained about 100 plus pounds out of the 155 pounds she dropped after getting RNY. Now she wants to start a family but i don’t know of it is safe or unsafe to plan for pregnancy now that she has regained all the weight. Would it be better for her to get a revision done to correct the weight and then plan pregnancy or should we have a baby and then do a revision? My overall concern is my spouse’s well being and i know how obesity plays a major role in pregnancies and the high risk it carries which can be very harmful for a unborn baby. Any advise would be appreciated as i am at a crossroads but don’t know what to do. -

Emergency Surgery - Adhesions & Intestinal Oclusion
Jeep_girl1313 replied to ladybug76's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So sorry to hear that happened. I’m a bit nervous for my surgery which is the revision to bypass and hiatal hernia and acid reflux, I had my gallbladder bladder out in Dec. I’m glad u are doing better and caught it in time. ❤️ -
Finally, got a new surgery date no thanks to Covid-19. Was suppose to go from sleeve to gastric bypass, along with fixing a hiatal hernia on 4/1, which I so need. I’m over pain & acid reflux. So fingers crossed 6/24, is it. 🤞🤞Not how I wanted to spend summer, but it’s better then not at all, looking at the positive side of it. Who knows where I live summer could be cancelled to. 🙂

Why/how do people regain?
New&Improved replied to KellyRenae's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Generally people get lazy or think that just because they lost a decent amount of weight they can start to indulge but no you cannot healthy eating and living is a life long process. Just like on 600lb life they go oh I've lost 100lbs time to pig out and I'm like no darling you've still got 300lbs to go if you start to get complacent and think I'll have one treat it can easily turn into multiple treats and you can go right Off track. You have to have very strong will power. Other reasons is living with people who continue to eat junk and keeping junk in the house is not a good idea. There are so many bad influences in the media but you can just drive past the takeaway and go to the grocery store, I'm still amazed the amount of people on my 600lb life who have never cooked a meal and eat take out everyday like how can you even afford to do that...?? I got rid of every little bit of bad food out of my house and never bought it again so it was not there and I've always been one to cook at home so I just studied healthy options plus I found a protein shake that tastes really good and I lived off shakes for months with the BYPASS I didn't even feel like eating for a long time. I've now lost 156lbs and feeling great. After I hit maintenance I admit I've had a few treats but I still keep an eye on my weight and everything. This is a life long process you cannot think oh I've lost weight now I'll start to pig out... -

I have small hiatal hernia discovered on EGD. My surgeon says he routine repairs them whether sleeve or bypass. Did you ask if he could repair it? Mine is "small" but surgeon says outcomes are always better when hernia is repaired. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app -
@Tracyringo Eating seems to be a bit more problematic atm. The MGB seems to be "more forgiving", so to say. But then again maybe I can't remember some issues I had during the first months after MGB. When I eat too fast or too much or too heavy foods I get a stomach ache. Can be from mild to wanting-to-crawling-up-the-walls. I never had that with MGB. However, my stomach is quite a primadonna since years so please take this answer with a grain of salt. The worst are dense high-protein/fat combinations. It's almost a guarantee for at least mild issues and a brick like feeling in the stomach. These things are very individual though. It makes me remember what one of the dietitians said to a fellow patient: "I can't tell you what to eat or not to eat. You have to find out what foods you tolerate or not. I can recommend eating dairy and chicken but when dairy makes you feel queasy and chicken makes you vomit the advice is worth nothing in the end." Regarding restriction: for me it's stronger than with the MGB right now but I guess in some months it will be about equal. Mind you, the revision was less than 3 months ago. Hunger signals are the same, they're very mild. I was supposed to start on solids three weeks after surgery in stead of four weeks. I was quite glad I could progress to solids a week earlier but have to say progression was less easy this time. While I struggled through the liquid/puree phase this time I also don't think it would have been possible to start solids earlier than this. I had awful cravings this time for "normal" foods like tofu with rice, cucumbers, whatever... Some people suggested this was because I was already at a normal weight when I got revision so maybe you're going to experience something similar, no idea. How much I can eat varies from meal to meal and that feels kind of frustrating. What's too much and causing issues one meal might be the right amount or even not enough the next time. In general foods with a high water content (e. g. fruit, raw vegetables) I tolerate best and usually don't cause issues so cherry tomatoes berries and grapes are favorite snack foods right now. I don't eat meat so I can't answer only part of your question. Strength and the like I'm hesitant to reply because I had not only the revision but also another little surgery regarding trocar hernia. The upper abdominal wall still feels strange when I exercise but in the end it was the fifth laparoscopy plus trocar hernia surgery, so I guess I simply have to be patient. I also feel quite stressed and exhausted these days because of work, lots of rather sh*tty 24 h shifts and on-call duties. I'm glad I'm going on vacation on Saturday for two weeks. After that I'm going to re-evaluate what might be surgery related and what might be stress related.

Pre-Surgery Advice: What do you wish you knew?
KayLow42 replied to Rachel98's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I read this comment and didn’t realize until I read this that this is my same scenario. I was very scared and when I went into the surgery and during recovery and the first three months I was depressed and had given up everything I had ever eaten. But slowly I have tried things and realized that I can have almost everything I had pre surgery. Which for some people (as I’ve read) can’t but I am thankful I can as I am aiming to live a balanced life and have a healthy relationship with food. I have found that because I can have all food I have started counseling to deal with my food issues because now, more than ever, I need to learn how to have a balanced and healthy relationship. But knowing I HAVE to hit a protein and water goal has been very nice in helping me. Thanks for writing this reply! I am glad to know other people feel this way in that all the research and horror stories do not happen to everyone and that you can live a balanced life with gastric bypass.
