    August surgery buddies!

    My had it listed as ok or I wouldn’t have - that and low fat cream soups … but I stuck with the tomato. That was the only real difference from the pre-op diet for me. I stay on liquids for a week, then transition to purées.

    The binder helps hold the abdomen tight which helps with pain. I took it off for the first time since surgery when I got into my own bed. It was very bunched up from sitting in the car and at the table and uncomfortable. But when I’m getting up and moving around it helps keep my skin from pulling. Mushroom soups sounds yummy! And to answer your question - yes I’m worried to that I won’t loose weight and I’ll mess this up. How far out from surgery, are you possibly in a stall?

    It's so weird how different doctors have different guidelines. My clinic actually gave me a set of recipes, including tomato soup. But I've seen this tomato soup thing in some online guidelines from clinics overseas. I'm not sure if I tolerate any of the added liquids well. I feel better than last week, but I have loose and watery stools. I don't think it's dumping syndrome, because I have no gas pain, sweat or nausea, so I guess it's normal?

    Yes, I started with tomato soup and then I had mushroom soup today. They gave me recipes for several different soups, including broccoli, sweet potato, tomato etc., that I could make in the second week. What are you scared of?
  5. Hi all - I am post VSG surgery nearly three years. While I still feel a restriction during meals, if I wait 15-20 minutes I can continue to eat whether it’s the remaining of my meal or something else. This concerns me. Anyone dealing with this or have dealt with this? Any suggestions? Thanks! -KB

    You are absolutely not alone in that possible failure feeling. I've been feeling it hard this past week. I finally decided to take a break from my scale. I've been looking for nonscale victories instead. I tried on a shirt that was way too tight 6 months ago, also thinking to myself I should probably return it and never did. I saw it in my closet the other day and tried it on. I was almost in tears at how good it looked and so proud of how far I'd come. The lbs aren't going to melt off in a day, with that being said I actually am starting to feel a lot of pressure from my family that knows I had surgery. I feel like their expectations now that I had the surgery are as if I just had lipo. It kinda stresses me out that the scale isn't moving like id like it to and I feel like I have all eyes on me waiting for me to fail.

    Why do you have an abdominal binder? I've never heard of it. I made mushroom soup from scratch today and it was sooooo delicious. I was a bit tired of tomato soup, so it was a nice change. But I'm also worried about how much I can eat. I'm on liquid diet but allowed to have soups if they have no chunks. I put a little soup in my bowl, maybe 4-5 spoonfuls which I ate slowly, and I finished it but didn't feel full or anything. But I wasn't sure if I could have more, so I stopped. Is anyone else worried that they will be a failure and not lose a lot of weight, or lose and then regain? I've lost almost 4 kilos after the surgery and 3 kilos before. In all almost 7 kilos or fifteen pounds. The thing is, I've been the same weight for three days now and this is pretty much exactly the weight I've been able to get down to on my own in recent years, before I start gaining again. What if my body is able to hold on to the weight, in spite of the fact that I only eat a couple of hundred calories per day? Is that physically possible?

    Keto flu is temporary, it can last anywhere from 3 days to a week.

    I agree it is amazing the differences in the programs. Pre-op 2 weeks but split. 1st week I replace 2 meals with liquids but can eat 1 meal of solid food. Second week only liquids. Also calorie restriction of 800 max per day. Liquids allowed are protein shakes, skim milk, SF jello, SF pudding, 100% fruit juice (4 oz per day), broth, SF popsicles ,low-fat SF yogurt Post op - Same as above but can add in thinned cream of wheat, and strained cream soups. Expected to last 1-2 weeks but can only be advanced with Dr permission. Food not allowed are drinks with added sugar, caffeine or carbonation, and whole milks Pureed stage - once allowed I can add in scrambled eggs, low fat cottage cheese, mashed beans, applesauce, baby food, and any pureed fruits, veggies and meats. Not allowed is previous list plus fried foods and concentrated sweets. Expected time frame is 2 weeks but can advance as I feel comfortable. Mechanical soft - add in boiled eggs, fish, tofu, ground lean meat, low fat canned chicken and fish, canned fruits (no syrup), soft fresh fruits, soft cooked veggies, cooked cereals made with milk, beans, and toasted whole wheat bread. Not allowed crunchy foods, rice, popcorn, high-fat meats, high -fat starches. Can't advance with out Dr approval. Solid foods - life long Add foods in one at a time to check for tolerance, add in whole wheat toast, whole grain cereals, wheat tortillas and whole wheat pasta. Still not allowed whole milk, high fat foods, fried foods, popcorn, rice, and white flour.

    I'm not hungry either after the surgery. Starting off I could only take two small sips before I felt a tightness in my chest. Now I can take three large sips. If I overdo it I feel like I need to stand up to help the liquid go down and I get a pain in my left top shoulder. Then I just feel uncomfortable for about 20 minutes. I realize it's different for everyone.

    I had the band in 2014 and like you lost in the beginning, almost achieving my goal. About 2017, I started having reflux issues and had the band completely deflated in 2018. End result I gained all the weight back because I couldn’t get the band filled and insurance would not pay for a second WLS. After almost 2 years I’m one week out from bypass as that’s what the surgeon recommended.

    Thank you. I was wondering the same thing (did they really take part of my stomach out?) I’m still drinking everything - but I can drink soup, broth, water, juice, protein drinks - all without any issue. Which is great, I suppose, no reason I can’t get my fluid intake in. I was expecting an ounce or two and I’d feel like I couldn’t take another sip. It scared me a little that I could drink so much without an issue. I need to be better at monitoring or I’ll take in too much. I’m hoping I’ll notice a difference when I move on to puréed foods next week. I’m excited for the refried beans with cheese and the protein pudding. Lol

    Pureed food

    I'm about to enter my week of pureed food. Any suggestions on what to eat? Is baby food surprisingly good or truly disgusting? It's only a week, so I'll get through it, but not looking forward to it.

    It took me about a week for me to notice the restriction. Honestly, I had felt the same, almost to the point of thinking did they really take out 80% of my stomach? By the end of the 2nd week, I started to notice more of the full feelings, and my body started to reject things that days prior I was having no issues getting down. I notice the fullness in my lower chest. A pressure but not the feeling of being overly full. Pace yourself with bites. I noticed I was taking my bites too quick at first and not allowing my body time to really figure out if I was done or not. Almost gave myself about a full min or two before I took another. Which honestly was hard because well for 32 years I've been eating the same way I always had so trying to completely change the way I eat has been a small struggle.

    Finally home and got that tomato soup I was craving since last week. It is fantastic! It’s odd because I’m not hungry, but I’m not noticing any restriction either? I’m still on full liquids… so does that make a difference? For those of that have had the sleeve, what does restriction feel like? I understand it is different for everyone. Thanks for your help.
  16. So I am 13 months post op. Lost over 120 pounds. Did just have my gallbladder out about 3 weeks ago. I’m starting to have this sharp pain in my stomach when I eat. Any thoughts/ ideas?

    3 months out

    Yea we all loose weight at different rates. some are slower some are fast. I am 4 months post op and i have lost almost 80lb, but some months i loose a good amount of weight and some i dont. Last month i only lost like 7lb because i hit a stall at 3 months. but in the last 2 weeks i have lost almost 10lb so i am hoping i am out of my stall. No hair loss at all (yet) But yea eating those carbs are getting you back into a bad habit so i would try to avoid that

    For sure. It's actually surprising to me just how different they seem to be? Here's mine: Pre-op: Two weeks long -- Only 3-4 protein shakes per day and unlimited clear, sugar-free liquids (which can include SF Popsicles and SF Jello). Post-Op Stage 1: Days 1-3 -- Only Sugar-Free Clear Liquids Stage 2: Days 4-7 -- Add in Protein Drinks, Skim or 1% Milk. Can also use Unsweetened soy or almond milk. Stage 3a: Days 8-14 -- Add in Cottage Cheese, Yogurt and/or Ricotta Cheese Stage 3b: Days 15-30 -- Add in Pureed Meats, Beans, Low Fat Cream Soups, Cooked Pureed Veggies. Eggs allowed, but must be soft. Fruit not allowed. Stage 4: Days 31-60 -- Low Fat Solid Foods, focused on protein first and introducing only 1 new food at a time. Fruits and veggies okay, but should be cooked. Best to avoid nuts and seeds. Stage 5: Lifelong -- Add in Raw fruits and veggies as tolerated. How does that compare to everyone else?

  20. i do not have a surgery date yet, but have been trending down my carb count to prepare for my 3 week low carb/keto diet (50 total carbs a day). Figure it will help me loose more weight before surgery and be more psychologically comfortable and ready for the whole process. i have finally got myself mostly down under 50 carbs a day (6/7 of the last days under 51) and am starting to feel the “keto flu”. I have had a lot of dreaming at night, which is unusual.. headaches the last few days and today general body aches. no fever or cough etc. anyone else experienced this with cutting carbs?? how long did this last?? did the keto actually help loose more weight ? thank you for sharing!

    3 months out

    53 lbs in three months is on the high end of someone at your starting weight. hair loss is very common. It's temporary - usually lasts about three or four months, then grows back. Just keep on top of your supplements and protein to keep it from getting worse than it would otherwise.
  22. little victory for me. made it to the gym to do 15 mins of strength training with dumbbells. going to try to go at least 2-3 times a week, hopefully increasing time and intensity. anyone have tips, tricks or routines for basic strength training?

    Well done, that equates to nearly 18lb a month which is pretty good, not slow at all, probably a high rate for that starting weight. Hair loss is quite common after weight loss surgery, you can read about it below. As long as you are reaching your nutritonal requirements it should be fine within three to six months (may be longer though). Hello So on the 23 of this month it will be 3 months post surgery , so far I went from 260 lbs to 207 lbs , so 53 lbs are off , I don't know if that's okay but I guess some people lose weight quickly and others slowly , maybe it also has to do with my bad habits of eating ice cream ( twice a week ) and some carbs such as bread and pasta . What I've noticed since my second month post op is the hair loss especially when I wash my hair or comb it , I lose a huge amount , although I have thick hair it's starting to get thinner should I be worried about it ?

    It sound very much like Dumping Syndrome. It may be the oiliness, the bread, the amount of food or the eggs. All are symptomatic. Eggs, chicken, fats, sugar and bread are particularly difficult for lots of bariatric patients Even now I can not eat bread unless it is toasted so crispy that it snaps. Its all about trial and error, you are early out and I dont know what regime you have been given but at 5 weeks out I was still on soft foods. Even now I can only eat one egg for a meal. Until your new tummy heals, you wont have any feelings of fullness. At your stage my nose would run or I would sneeze and that was my cue to stop eating. Its all a learning curve and its not easy.
