Does Food Still Bring You Joy? a newbie wants to know.
New&Improved replied to MaybeMeow's topic in The Lounge
Don't stress I had bypass and I'm glad I don't feel the need to turn to food 8 literally eat because I need the protein. I don't really feel the need to eat constantly like I used to and I'm glad. -

Endoscopic Sleeve with Dr. Sadek in NJ, has anyone done this procedure with him?
Hop_Scotch replied to hope4momof4's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
I am in Australia so my experience may not be valid for the USA or UK (if that is where you are). I had a failed ESG, I lost restriction and an endoscopy revealed that most of the sutures had come undone. I had revision to a (surgical) sleeve mid March. There seems to be some success with ESG (in that the sutures have held and there is no loss of restriction) but I think a lot of that is due to surgeon experience and technique. There is also a number of failures where the sutures have come undone whether due to non compliance by the patient, lack of surgeon experience/technique, some people with bouts of bad vomiting (which caused the sutures to loosen) and some for no known reason. While some people with a previoulsy very high BMI have had some success, If you have a BMI higher than 40, you would be better off with a surgical option in my personal opinion. My sleeve surgeon says he currently considers the ESG as a temporary measure for anyone who needs to lose weight quickly for a urgent operation or prior to a more permanent weight loss surgery so that the patient's health has improved enough for them to undertake a longer procedure. It seems that the medium to long term failure rate in Australia is higher than USA. If you are serious about getting the ESG some questions to ask in your consult: How many ESGs they have done, what is the complication rate, failure rate and success rate one and two years out, is there an ongoing support program afterward, if the ESG failures due to no fault of your own is there a nil cost fix (should you want it), -
Yay! Sounds like yer doin GREAT! Bypass or Sleeve? And OOOO, tell us more about the sippy cup. I'm a straw drinker, myself, and have been trying to find something that is like it but won't add air to the "sip". And what unflavored protein power makes broth taste like cream of chicken?

Since I'm about 10 days away from a bypass I'd love to hear from the Veteran Bypassers but of course Sleevers too as I know it's not THAT different. I think what keeps me awake at night is the LOSS of the joy I receive celebrating with food or splurging as a Foodie with my husband (naturally trim) or the joy of treats with my children. I don't need the speech about finding joy in other things. I get that. And I know food has been an anchor to me for many years now. A burden. But I do also get great joy from it. From looking forward to it. Even during my years of temporarily successful Weight Watchers attempts I could save points for a big treat on the weekend and felt great joy in looking forward to that bowl of ice cream or fried chicken and potatoes. In fact, it's the first thing my physician-husband (who recommends WLS to his patients) said to me when I told him I was considering the surgery ... "But... food makes you happy." So... I guess I'd like to hear from those who have found a way to still find JOY in their food. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Whose 5 years out or about? How are you doing? I’m 5 years post op gastric bypass. Sitting at 150. Still wanting to lose the last few lbs. started at 402. Looking for some new friends. It’s been awhile since I’ve been on here. But it’s nice to have friends who understand this way of life. ❤️ shoot me a message or leave a comment. I’d love to hear your journey! Ashley

@FluffyChix I was lurking in the Poo section because of a bowel movement I had and there you are describing it. Black looked like tar. I am guessing this isn't unusual for the first time after bypass?

Hi there, I rarely open this app but I share this experience. Perhaps after so long I was called online by your post? Lol The short answer is yes you can lose weight and stay on your meds. Your personal experience may differ from that of others but you can still be successful. Now the long answer: I'm over ten years post op and I have used a variety of what I call "My personal crazy pills" long before having gastric bypass surgery. I still take a combination of meds today. Please note that I am not applying my description of my drugs to you. I use this catch all phrase "tongue in cheek" rather go through the list of med cocktails I've had over time. My weight loss was painfully slow. Everyone does not have that quick pounds off honeymoon period we hear about. This was disheartening because I had no warning. FOLLOW YOUR PLAN TO THE LETTER! Many meds interfere with weight loss even immediately after surgery. I experienced rapid weight gain within the first two weeks. Fortunately, I had a great surgeon who understood this. I started as a size 2x in LizClaiborne/ EvanPicone clothing and I've maintained a 2/4 in BananaRepublic/ AnneTaylor sizes. It took me over a year and a half to get there while others lost the same amount of weight in under half that time. Despite weight changes I have never bought a larger size and I shop with a tape measure to be certain of this. Like most, I have had some regain and re loss but overall I'm keeping the weight off. I'm a long time user of a variety of meds that could negatively effect anyone's weight loss. Steroids plus a few other daily meds top up "My personal crazy pills". You can do just fine with what my doctor called metabolic challenges. Keep in mind slow weight loss does not mean you won't have long term success. Permanent weight loss is more important than fast weight loss. Follow your health plan and build physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Avoid comparing yourself to others. You don't know how another's story truly compares to your own. With commitment you'll be sharing your positive experience with someone else a decade from now. YOU CAN DO THIS!

RNY Revision @ 12 Years Post-op

I am sorry you are having all these difficulties. I would imagine your BMI would be too low for approval but I am not an insurance person or a Dr. You may not get the fullness you are looking for in a 2nd surgery. If you have not read what is being said you may want to go check out some of the revision threads out there. Have you tried the 5 day reset ? Its suppose to help shrink your pouch back somewhat and get you back on track like a pre op. -
I have a co-worker who had Gastric Bypass and she swears by the shaper she wears. It has hooks in the front and is a full body shaper, one of the more expensive ones. I would suggest waiting until you've healed though because you will be sore for the first two weeks weeks or so and I'm pretty sure pressure so soon after surgery would be a bad idea.

Ha--that's funny that you should mention drinking through straws. When I got my lap band years ago they said NEVER drink through straws because you swallowed air. Well, after getting my revision I was having lots of trouble swallowing air drinking, so my PA asked me "Have you tried using a straw?" and I went "WHAAAAT??" She suggested trying a straw, and to my amazement the trouble IMMEDIATELY went away. I swallow less air using a straw then when I don't!

How exciting! Bypass or Sleeve? Do you get to relax by the beach afterwards?
-
Only three days liquid liver diet. It's odd how all the pre and post op instructions vary. Just finished chatting with a bypass patient who is allowed to have peanut butter 14 days post op. I thought that sounded a lot better than my clear liquid week, full liquid week, pureed food week, then soft foods for 2 weeks etc. Enjoy that cake!! That's something I really need to get my head around. No sweet treats ever?? Or you dump? OOf.

Yea don't stress about exercise just yet mate just take your time getting in your protein and water and relax mate. Hello everyone, I hope you all are staying safe during these trying times. I'm scheduled for June 5th. I'm nervous because mine is a revision to bypass from sleeve. I'm going to Tijuana. Anybody want share if they're going there?

I ended up going back on effexor. I was on 225mg before surgery once daily. My doctor came up with a plan to take the same dose but 3 times daily at 75mg each. It seems to be working. Unfortunately there's not a lot of medications that have the same benefits when it comes to both mild depression and anxiety. The only problem is, you can only get extended release in the Effexor. You can't really get your regular dose of meds after gastric bypass if the med is extended release. It might be different for you having the sleeve. I know too, as long as you are in the rapid weight loss mode after surgery your body will be flooded with lots of hormones and other chemicals that was stored in fat cells. Hopefully for us this dump of chemicals will stop after we get to goal weight. I'm feeling better as of today. I hope all is well with you.

Revision done and I’m home in bed. Day 2 here we go. I have such a headache and liquid Tylenol is making me nauseated 🤢 it’s so gross It’s the only thing they gave me to take besides nausea meds, and Prilosec. I do have oxys and may take that at night time, tonight. Unsure what to do about this headache. I might attempt Gatorade maybe it’s also caffeine withdrawal. help!!!!

21 years ago wow. How much has she regained in 2 years ? Well I will tell you had I had this revision due to weight gain I would be very upset right now. It is not at all like I thought it would be. I just had breakfast and ate a whole scrambled egg with parmesan cheese no problem. Has she talked to a surgeon ?

MAY-JUNE-JULY 2020 BYPASSERS UNITE!! Veterans Welcome too!
jami.1992 replied to MaybeMeow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon had me on the Bariatric advantage HPMR shakes for 2 weeks. I just started eating yesterday. I’ll be honest though...by day 9 of the shakes it got pretty rough i just couldn’t handle the taste or texture of the shakes anymore....it got to the point I was getting sick when I drank them. I haven’t felt hungry since surgery, but my mind thinks I am when my family is eating lol I just try to find something to occupy myself until they are done :) my surgeon said my goal is 173 because that would put me at losing 70% of my excess weight, but my personal goal is 160 We never talked about my bypass length. All they told me was that my stomach is now the size of a plum. -
RNY Revision @ 12 Years Post-op
Laneykins posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi everyone- I'm new to BariatricPal. I had RNY Gastric Bypass in June 2008. Met goal weight of 118 lbs. by August 2009. Had my son in September 2011 so I gained 30 lbs. which I subsequently lost within 6 months of his birth. I am now approaching my 12 year surgiversary and I have crept up to 180 lbs. I am so mortified and disappointed in myself; and I understand it is also due to the lack of fullness after so long. I am going back to my original surgeon to discuss revision options. My question is, I have NJ Family Care / Horizon BCBS of NJ and there isn't much online as to whether they typically cover weight loss surgery revisions. I am so nervous because my insurance barely wanted to cover a root canal and this is obviously much more invasive. The other problem I have is chronic pain, as I had back surgery in 2013 following a car accident. The added weight has worsened all of my issues and I am dealing with horrible sciatica with the weight gain. I just wish I felt full. I do not drink, smoke, or do illicit drugs. I just would like to know if based on my circumstances if I can be approved by Medicaid for the revision. Thanks for reading and for any advice.- 2 replies

With the sleeve, she felt the restriction when eating right away. Not as much now with the bypass. I had a mini gastric bypass and I feel the restriction, but it’s also the only weight loss surgery I’ve had, so that may play into it. Also, I love sweets and savoury, cheesy goods. But they played a major role in my weight gain over the years. Along with little exercise, they helped make me fat and unhealthy. Yet I still miss them. Where’s the logic in that?
