Those of you 1+ year post op….
Queen ApisM replied to KimA-GA's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
what’s been your biggest change? The level of energy I have. It's nuts. I am so motivated to do things now, and that's with me still being 120 lbs heavier than a normal BMI. It's been great, and it has led to other changes like exercising so much more, accomplishing more house goals, and just generally being happier and more stable emotionally (even with all the weight loss-induced hormonal situations). what was the biggest surprise? I thought I would mourn not being able to eat a lot, and I really don't. Sure, sometimes I wish I could just scarf down a big plate of whatever, but then I start eating and I have the amount I can have, and I am ok with it. I thought I would feel deprived and sad but I really do not. biggest challenge? Not comparing myself to others. I'm a year out, and while I am happy with what I have lost, I can't help but compare myself to others who started out with similar stats but have dropped a whole lot more weight. Or even more, people who started out even smaller but lost more weight! It's tough not to compare but I'm constantly working on it... biggest personal victory? This one is tough. I'd say the fact that I now workout 5x a week for 45 minutes and enjoy it? I don't have to talk myself into it as much as I used to, and I feel compelled to do it. -
Good morning from overcast San Diego. I am officially 1 week post-op today. Things are going well. Tolerating pureed soups, protein shakes well and hitting my water goals. Moving quite a bit, too. Today I'm allowed to drive myself, so I will not wake up my nocturnal almost-18 daughter to drive me to the auto repair shop where I have an early appointment. Speaking of which, I need to get going. No time to enjoy soup, so I'll take a protein shake with me for breakfast, then have soup in a few hours.

Oh gosh! I'm so, so glad you're healing and taking it easy. What a scare. And yay for the NSV of walking up the stairs! I'm only 7 days post op and only 4 pounds under my pre-surgery weight (because I had lots of water retention last week), but my victory is getting around easier, and (it might be my imagination) pants a bit less snug. [eta: come to think of it, even though I only lost 4 lbs since surgery, I've lost 19 overall in the past 2.5 weeks, so that's significant enough to feel a difference]

Hi everyone, checking in to see how it’s going! I’m just about 5 weeks out. I lost 27 lbs in the first 3 weeks … and haven’t lost any weight in the 2 weeks since. I wish I had taken Tek’s advice not to weight myself 😩

Length of time on PPI or other antiacid
kcuster83 replied to Tomo's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had severe GERD post op, was on famotidine, omeprazole and still needed OTC antacids like tums or rolaids. After surgery I had to crush all pills or have a liquid form. At the hospital they were only giving me the famotidine crushed up. When I got home I I never restarted the omeprazole because (much to my surprise) I wasn't having symptoms so I rolled with it. At my 1 week follow up he said I had to stay on the famotidine for 2 months regardless of symptoms because it helps reduce acids and help the stomach heal. So, at my 2 month follow up he asked me if I was having any symptoms of GERD/reflux. I wasn't (SUPER EXCITING for me because before surgery mine was horrible) so he said I can stop all reflux /antacid meds as long as my PCP was ok with it because he was technically the prescribing doctor. Anyway, I am stubborn and didn't even ask I just stopped them. 5 months later still no GERD/reflux at all. YAY YAY CELEBRATE! It is wonderful! -
Questions to Ask Before Surgery?
SpartanMaker posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm having my last pre-surgery visit with my bariatric surgery team this week. Because that's how I roll, I have an extensive list questions so far. I'm curious if there are any questions you wish you'd asked your team, but didn't? What surprises did you encounter? What do you wish you'd known ahead of time about the surgical process, your recovery, or your weight loss? Thanks all! -
I'm six weeks post op tomorrow and I switched to capsules about ten days ago and have had no issues. The chewables are gross and overpriced. I just couldn't bring myself to order another bottle of chewables for $30. I can get a three month supply of capsules for less than the cost of one month of chewables. I was supposed to remain on chewables for three months, but oh well, lol.

VSG to RNY: please give me your stats
mrbshamrock replied to Heather0811's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello, I had the sleeve in 2019 - I weighed 255 day of surgery and got down to 195....after several months below 200 lbs I slowly regained until I had got back to my original weight prior to surgery, which was less than two years time. I am scheduled for gastric bypass in late September due to acid reflux, but also to revive my weight loss again. I am over fifty so I realize I will most likely to hit a stall or two....does anyone keep the weight off when they do a revision? Especially if they didnt have a lot to lose (ie less than one hundred pounds)? I am excited but also keeping cautious optimism for a long term success -
I had my surgery in Janaury 22 and I'm glad I did
omrhsn posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi everyone! I've been a silent reader of these forums and have found a lot of answers and inspiration in here that helped me a lot along my weight loss journey. This is my first post and just wanted to first thank you for sharing your experiences and stories and to share mine as well. Hopefully this will inspire someone to take the decision. I had my surgery on 30 January 2022 and I'm glad I did. I'm going to be 40 in September and I've always been overweight. I've tried several diets, lost and gained a lot of weight. The last diet I've tried was Keto diet back in 2019. I was able to lose 25 Kg. Then Covid-19 came, the lockdowns and having to work from home. I gained all the weight back and some more 😥. Fast forward to January 2022. My sister (who is also overweight) was in Egypt on a business trip. She met one of her classmates in there who lost almost half of her weight and looked unrecognizable. My sister's friend recommended that she consult the same surgeon that did her mini gastric bypass surgery. After visiting that surgeon, my sister decided to have the surgery by mid January 2022. We talked about it and I discussed with the surgeon over Skype and made the arrangements to have mine by end of January 22. I had my surgery on 30 January 22 and stayed in the hospital for two days. I then flew back to Malaysia a week after. My starting weight was 149 Kg and my current is 103 Kg. I'm super happy with my decision and consider that to be my 40th birthday gift to myself. I feel and look amazing and I'm able to do a lot of the things that I've always wanted to do but couldn't because of my weight. I even got myself a mountain bike that I ride every night around my house. I hope I will be down to two-digits weight just in time for my 40th birthday! I'm planning to join a gym next month which will hopefully help with loose skin and speed up the weight loss. I've started a list of all of the things that I've always wanted to do but couldn't and I'm really excited to tick as items much as I can. -
Will I ever be hungry again???
Smanky replied to camcam5189's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had no hunger and had to force myself to eat for the first 3 months. Eating was a total chore, but after eating myself into morbid obesity, not giving a flying f**k about food was liberating. My hunger came back around the 4th month and it's back to normal now. No matter how much water I drink, I always feel low-key dehydrated. I've come to just accept that this is my new normal now. Things take some time to re-adjust after a major surgery like this. Your entire system has been re-wired and re-configured and your body has a hell of a job healing from it and adjusting to it. Give it and yourself time. 3 and a half weeks is barely out of the hospital. It gets better, everyone will tell you this because it's true, but it will take time. It's all absolutely worth it, though. -
Will cravings for sweets and carbs stop
Giovanna628 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tomorrow I start my 2 week pre-op diet. I’m excited and nervous for my Surgery. Will the cravings for sweets and carbs stop? -
I'm about 3 1/2 weeks post op and ever since my surgery I have never been hungry. You would think that is a good thing, but to me it is not. It is messing with me psychologically and physically as I'm always tired. I'm taking my vitamins and minerals, but I need more. Also, when I make myself eat something I can't even get a bite down without feeling nauseous. Drinking water is a struggle as well as I'm always thirsty and can never drink enough to quench my thirst without wanting to throw up first. I need help. Will the urge to want to eat ever come back?

I looked it up because I haven’t had my follow up and it was one of the questions I meant to ask. Now I’m not a medical expert and I don’t believe in being an internet doctor but it might help you. Here’s what I found. “Can you take pills after gastric bypass? Capsule, chewable and liquid medications can be taken immediately after surgery, but tablet medications need to be broken up or crushed for the first three months. This prevents medications from getting stuck in the digestive tract or not being fully absorbed.” I think if you think you can tolerate it than you can probably take it. I took a 500mg Tylenol tablet last night and didn’t have an issue. (And I did not crush it because it was late at night and I didn’t even think about).

6 days post-op here, and after a really rough outside-the-bell-curve start, I've been doing quite well since getting home. Sure, pains here, aches there, but better each day. And the water retention finally went down enough that after nearly a week, I'm back down to just under my weight immediately before the surgery. Let the pounds melt off! Because I'm moving in just under a month (*gulp*), I'm going through and donating or throwing out a lot of things. My strong almost-18 daughter is doing all the lifting. I usually do organizing, decision making, and anything light. Today I started in on the kitchen. I figure it's a good time to pack the pantry because A) most things are expired and need to be tossed anyway, and B) there's stuff I can't eat in the next month (but can once I'm on bari regular after the move). My daughter pretty much only eats stuff from the fridge and freezer anyway. Feels good to be shedding kitchen weight along with my body weight.

Sounds about right. I've gained and lost 150+ pounds at 3 points in my life, and whenever I dropped like a stone, I'd hit a plateau. I think it especially makes sense in light of not hitting your protein goals... I keep hearing that's hard for people who don't like protein shakes (understandable). I hit my 65 just barely with 2 protein shakes + Greek yogurt, and it feels like I'm setting timers all day to either be eating or hydrating so I don't forget. Anyway, I totally wouldn't stress about the stall. I'm sure it will start coming off again soon.

NobiX - Minimally Invasive Alternative to Gastric Bypass
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I read this a couple weeks ago and forgot until now to post about it. It's supposed to mimic gastric bypass without rerouting the digestive tract. I'm not sure how to feel about this minimally invasive implantable device. I previously had a Lap Band and it wasn't a pleasant experience. I guess if it makes it past clinical trials and gets approved, we'll see how patients do and if this is another option to end obesity and diabetes. Just thought I would share this with the community. https://www.jpost.com/business-and-innovation/tech-and-start-ups/article-713944 -
Constipation
LookingForward22 replied to Watchjulshrink's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not quite 2 weeks out and have been dealing with this also. Keep hydrated and moving. It helps. I was regularly taking Miralax, alone it didn’t do much. Used a dulcolax suppository and that helped a little. Added in Colace (two in the morning and one in the evening). That’s helping a little. Once I got to purée I took oatmeal and blended it with either a fruit cup or applesauce to increase my fiber. Things are moving slowly…. But kinda moving. -
On Tuesday I will be 3-weeks Post-Op! I went back to work last week and OMG it was rough. I'm still not eating a lot, so I was EXHAUSTED by mid-day. I've been taking naps when I get home...like "If I don't lay down RIGHT NOW I'd going to fall asleep driving/standing up" kind of naps. Reminds me of the exhaustion during my pregnancy! Something they didn't tell me (but they said they did tell me): about 10-14 days post-op you might feel intense pain on your left side. Like a pulling, twinging, sharp pain that gets worse when you bend over or try to sit or even move the wrong way. Totally different pain that the post-op pain. Apparently this is caused because all the swelling is gone and your stomach/intestines are no longer "cushioned" within that swelling so they move around a bit more and the internal stitches/incisions are moving around. Nothing to be worried about and completely normal (according to my office). But holy cats was it scary!!!! I thought FOR SURE something was wrong. Water goals are FINALLY reached. Protein goals are still not being reached. I can't count protein shakes towards water goals at all, they count as meals. And I cannot drink an entire shake during 1 meal...it's split between 2. Vitamins are going well except the calcium. They have me taking TUMS for the first 3 months and I cannot for the life of me chew them and keep them down. I have to call them tomorrow to see if I can switch to something else because the TUMS make me so ill that I have stopped taking them all together. Had my first little "mini-stall" right on schedule during week 2. Lasted 3 days. I'm moving down again! I'm having a really, really big problem with constipation. I'm taking Miralax in my water every morning & 2 stool softeners daily and I still don't have any poop movement unless I take a mega-dose of additional laxatives. I'll go 3-4 days without pooping, then take the mega-dose of laxatives, have a really bad evening and then start over and do that cycle again. I've talked to my doctor about it and I don't think they are understanding what a big problem this is.

7 weeks pregnant 6 months post-op
LilaNicole20 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had an episode that I initially thought was morning sickness but now I’m wondering if it was actually more like dumping. We stopped for ice cream and I ate a little bit - really not much, then 30 minutes later started sweating, became extremely nauseous and eventually threw up in the toilet. It wasn’t until my tummy started also rumbling that I considered it may be dumping. I’m getting my morning sickness at night - around this time so it could be both but I just thought that was interesting that they both converged as a possibility at the same time. Who knows. -
I agree. While you're waiting for your appointment, you could start back on a bariatric multivitamin once a day and calcium citrate three times a day. I've linked the bariatric vitamin I use. It has iron in it, so you should wait two hours before taking the calcium. They tell me that chemically, iron and calcium are both anions. Our post-surgery bodies have a limited capacity for absorption, so if you take two anions at the same time, the amount of each that's actually absorbed is unpredictable. (My last chemistry course was almost 50 years ago, so it was a stretch to remember this stuff.) You need calcium citrate because more easily soluble than the more common and cheaper calcium carbonate. If you need more iron, you'll need ferrous gluconate rather than ferrous sulfate for the same reason. Your doc will tell you whether you need iron based on the blood work. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HZ3YQ5X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

September 2022 surgery buddies
Vicky Sue replied to Vicky Sue's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Uggg... got a call earlier this week and my surgery team said I have to wait the full 6 months for surgery. So now, it looks like late October. I remain grateful though as I'm blessed to have insurance. -
HELP!! VETS and NEWBIES What are the Surgery Basic Supplies you will need when you get home from the Hospital Please?
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to CeeIvy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I second the binder recommendation. Binders help to reduce discomfort when you have to move or walk. Check with your team, oftentimes they put one on in the OR right after surgery. You'll only need it for a couple weeks probably at most, so if they provide one, you won't need to buy one. Also a heating pad is helpful for the surgery gas that is used to insulfflate your abdomen, and when it travels from your abdomen, up to your back and neck. (Walking often helps to move the gas out of your system too.) A tracking app like Baritastic or My Fitness Pal to track your fluids and protein is a big help also. I know some people set alarms on their phones to remind them to drink every 15 minutes. Best wishes! -
Stall - revision sleeve to bypass
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to ocdennise's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
How much have you lost since your revision? Sometimes during stalls, we don't lose pounds, but we are losing inches. I think it also depends on how much weight you have to lose. The less you have to lose, the slower weight loss can be. And stalls can happen all along the weight loss journey. I think they're a normal part of the process. It's our bodies/metabolisms adapting to the changes our bodies are going through. I'm only 6 weeks post op Band to Bypass revision. But I seem to be a slower loser than those with virgin bypasses. My restriction is there, depending on what I eat. Of course I feel it more with denser proteins. Compared to my Band, the Bypass seems to feel completely natural, unlike my Band. When I was able to start exercising, and increased my calories a bit, I noticed the scale started moving better. I hope to be released tomorrow to be able to lift weights again, I know that will also help me more. Best Wishes! -

I got the sleeve and at 3 months i was on a stall for almost the entire month. Barely lost anything at all.. It happens.
