I am RNY for several reasons, severe reflux, HBP, sleep apnea, severe arthritis since 25, and I wanted the quickest way to lose weight. I decided the RNY would work best for me, did not want to throw away 3/4 of my stomach, so I have a turkey-egg stomach instead of one some have described a banana but my search leads me to believe a garden hose just wouldn't do me. My surgeon didn't even ask or sway my thinking. When I announced I wanted a bypass he said I was making a wise choice. Would he have tried talking me into a sleeve, doubt it, at 72 I didn't feel I had enough Life Time to revise later, so since I wanted the Gold Medal surgery, I chose the best, if they were issued medals he would wear a Big Gold one. Chief of Baraiatric Surgery and Metabolic Weight loss, full professor in College of Medicine, trained many now-successful Bariatric surgeon's in the MidWest and God only knows where else. But he also is a very nice person. My son and I are very close, my middle child, his older brother died at 31 suddenly in 2008, my Husband died 4th of July 6 years ago. So we still live together, I go to his appointments, he comes to mine. We always band together. Well at my presurgery meeting with my Dr Needleman, he did something that impressed me greatly. He came over, shook my son's hand said " I promise to take very good care of your Mother" he was sensitive to enough to reassure my 👦. And he has treated me wonderful. If I had become a doctor, which had always been my dream, I would have been happy to be even an 1/8th as good, as he was and is. And the blip in recovery I am experiencing? Couldn't have been, planned for but they know how to repair it. And I believe in them, and. that helps.

My doctor is the one that suggested the sleeve would be better for me. I was also worried with the malabsorption with the bypass. I had reflux before surgery but not that bad, so I took a chance with the sleeve. I have a friend that had to get the revision because of the reflux. So far, I'm happy with what I've had. And just like you, I had heard a lot of horror stories with the lap band. I have a friend from high school that got it and she lost a good amount of weight, but she doesn't have the restriction and eats EVERYTHING and sometimes she'll get sick, but she's gained a lot back. I know that these are all just tools and we still have to do our work.

Weight loss expectations VSG to RNY??
Heather E replied to mi75's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was revised January 2021, and 1 year out I had lost 105 lbs. Revision weight was 295, high weight (pre-sleeve) 365. I am currently 195. I just finished treatment for uterine/ovarian cancer and oncologist told me to not actively try to lose weight, but I have lost over 30 pounds since the diagnosis. -
Weight loss expectations VSG to RNY??
mi75 replied to mi75's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
yes planning on it. see my GI doc in a week. I haven't seen my original surgeon in 7 years- I had to switch to another clinic because of insurance purposes and will discuss with my GI doc which surgeon would be better for the revision (now that i've switched to a BCBS plan they both take).... GERD is still terrible. -
Weight loss expectations VSG to RNY??
lizonaplane replied to mi75's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
The weight loss for revision varies a lot, but in general is significantly less than with your initial surgery. If you're doing it for GERD, it makes sense, but for weight loss, it makes more sense to look at other weight loss strategies like medications and counting calories/behavior change -
Hello. I am praying for some responses. I had a Lap Band for 12 years and when it failed I decided to have a revision to a sleeve. Please know my surgeon is someone I have trusted for many years and have a great Dr. Patient relationship with. After the surgery though, I was not feeling what I felt I was supposed to feel especially in regards to hunger. I got my operative reports from the hospital and they say that my "omentum" was removed and a partial gastrectomy. If you look up partial gastrectomy it is different than a vertical sleeve gastrectomy. I am very concerned and I also feel very bad questioning my Dr about this but, I think I have to or do you think it's possible that a Dr. called a sleeve a "partial gastrectomy"? if it were you and your body, what would you do? I realize most people don't get their surgery reports and question their Dr's. I see him tomorrow. I never expected such poor results with this either. I was much more successful with my lapband. Now I have reflux and no weight loss. He had me do a gastric emptying study today and that was normal but we will discuss results tomorrow. tell me, would you ask about the wording "partial gastrectomy" if you google it, it's not a sleeve gastrectomy. I'm so sad, perplexed and hoping to hear back from you guys.

Black911, I did water aerobic classes prior to surgery & will again when allowed, now I'm doing short walks (I'm 2 weeks out from Lapband revision with Gastric bypass). What do you think about gentle exercising with sitting & 2lb. wt. lifting (arms)? I'm going to incorporate Tai Chi for Seniors (I have a DVD I ordered online - they show you how to modify in chair, it's WONDERFUL for any age/ability!) I was banded in Jan. 2010 and did very well. I had my port revised in June last year..twisted, unfortunately it went down hill from there. He placed the port on my belt line. I have had nothing but pain and tenderness for the last 8 months and oh yeah, took him 7 months to convince him I had a leak. I know what restriction is and I never got it after the revision. Anyways, yes, my port incision for my port wouldn't close and I would have fluid poor out like a faucet. As long as it wasn't infected leave it alone they said..Its like a got a pocket around the site and it would fill up and poor out. Scared the crap out of me...My fills became so painful from them digging around I would lay on the couch with an ice pack and Tylenol and wishing I had pain meds. I felt all these months have been wasted and I gained my weight back. I fired my so called doctor and now am with someone who listens to me. I am converting to the gastric sleeve if my insurance will allow me. Please be strong and be your own advocate. I waited way to long to speak up to where he would listen to me...one time i asked my doc how many cc's i had, he said i don't know. so keep track of your cc's...I wouldn't change a thing but to be much firmer next time with my doctor. Lesson learned. So i feel for you and it does stink these bumps come up in the road. If you have a good doctor that communicates with you, you will be fine. If not, find another surgeon who cares..just my opinion..

How long was your revision procedure?
NewChiGirl replied to timarland's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Really depends on what's going on inside. I had it done in one procedure and had a TON of scar tissue and it took him like 4.5 hours. Most of it was removing the adhesions. I had my band in for 9.5 years. Good luck! Band to Vsg revision: 5/23/17 HW: 315+ Starting weight: 294 Surgery Day: 281 Current: 226 Goal 170 -
How long was your revision procedure?
timarland replied to timarland's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm hoping this will be more the case for me, versus the 4+ hour ones I've heard of here. Looks like you're down quite a bit in the short time since your revision. Nice! -

My surgery is in 13 days... I am also freaking out, had my pre op blood work and EKG today and have my surgery clearance spot with my internal med doc on Tuesday... Then pre op with surgeon on 9th. Time seems to be going fast... I am noticing I am having somewhat difficult time mentally on this liquid diet, it's sad how much food is has a hold of me... All the cravings are kicking in just because i can't have it at the moment and I know it's just my head... Trying to really pay attention to it and change my way of seeing food and and keep staying busy. I told someone today about my surgery and they asked me if I am excited... I feel like I can't get excited because I know it will be tough and since I am revision from lap band I am scared I won't lose my extra weight... Wow....guess i needed to let things out here lol

i revised from sleeve to rny on 9 May. Have you gone right back to the beginning with diet. I find I can eat much more. I revised due to many complications, I am below goal weight.

Have you called your doctor? I did the same thing with my band and it wasnt until I went in and fessed up that the gain stopped. After seeing my dr I maintained for 7 months before revising to rny. There is something about the accountability and not wanting to let people down that got me in line. Oh and track your food and exercise it helps every time. In my experience it is the magic behind wls. I like to recommend myfitnesspal.com. You can do anything you set your mind to.

Hi all, I'm scheduled for May 13 ( hope I can still join the group since I am revision from band to bypass) I am supposed to start 2 weeks liquid diet on 28th (my dr requires it for all patients)... Not looking forward to it.

It makes sense that your fears are magnified with so little support at home. Good for you for coming to a safe place and asking for feedback from people who have actually had sleeve surgery. Everyone's journey is unique but we KNOW what we're talking about. I am a band to sleeve revision. (Band failed to produce weight loss and 6 years later caused serious complications.) I wasn't sure the sleeve would work for me either. I feared another failure. It had to make a conscious decision that whether or not the sleeve produced weight loss, I was giving myself the best chance possible to avoid diabetes, heart disease or stroke - all of which contributed to my mom's death. it was the mental adjustment I needed and I went into surgery 100% at peace. Recovery was so easy. I had localized pain where the port was removed from the abdominal wall but it wasn't unbearable and resolved completely in a couple of weeks. My nurses had me up and walking, which I think jumpstarted my healing. I would do it again tomorrow because my experience was so positive. Really, I would do it again with no hesitation. Weight loss has been slower than I'd like but I'm losing 1 - 1.5 pounds a week. Plus, my joints don't hurt, my clothes are getting loose, I'm starting to recognize my face in the mirror. I feel terrifi. I made the right choice for me. You considered this choice in consultation with your doctor for a reason. Listen to your inner voice and have the confidence in yourself to know that you'll make this happen. The sleeve is a powerful tool if you work your program. Don't give up and keep coming back here! We'll support you!!!! Band to Sleeve Revision Surgery 7/28/14 Before surgery 211. Now 173 Pounds Lost: 38 and counting

Saw dietician tonight. I have now lost 60lbs post op (sleeved 26 April), 76.5lbs including pre-op. Those are numbers I never thought I would or could achieve so- woooohoooooo!!! For a non-tall person, whose BMI is now just below 27 (started at 41) and whose health is changed beyond recognition, all I can say is thank you sleeve, I literally couldn't do it without you, lol!! You have changed my life forever. I have now revised my target weight, which gives me 14 lbs to go (don't know why ticker keeps showing 7lbs). Cosmetic surgeon says my boob job will take 5 of those lbs away.... It's all getting soooo close.... Am away back to my happy dance (which I can now do for way longer without losing my breath, ha ha ha!!!) Normal service resumed soon......

Here I am...again...starting anew.
brittu replied to Fatty McFatster's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My story is the same as yours. I revised to a sleeve and went from 256 to 132. I'm currently working on getting off the regain I put on in the last year. If I can't get back to goal I may consider a DS but think I can do it and would prefer to avoid mal absorption. I'm seeing my doctor, who had a bypass and works on maintenance herself, for the regain. She requires protein shakes and low carb in her program. -
Military Wives Who Have Had This Surgery
futurbander2007 replied to Stevie1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too an an Army wife with Tri-care prime. There really was not a lot that I had to do get my band. It was as simple as meeting with my PCM, getting the referral to general surgery, going to a few nutrition classes, and meeting a psychiatrist. That was it. I feel so bad for the people who have to go through this long drawn out process to get their lives back. I was on the low end of the BMI scale and honestly I don't think I would have qualified for the surgery in the civilian world. But because the Lap-Band was so new to our post they were pretty willing to give it to anyone who wanted it. I am not saying that is a good thing, but it has given me my life back. I have done extremely well with the band but some other people who had it done around the same time I did are having problems with it. Not with the band itself but with the whole idea of following the "rules" Looking back on the last 2 yrs and how far I have come and how much my fellow Lap-Banders here on post have struggled I think there should be more involved with getting the band. It seems like they are giving it to anyone and everyone whether or not they know what they are getting into. So many of the others want a revision to the sleeve or gastric bypass. Like that is going to be any easier for them. I just think the selection process needs to be reviewed. But on that note I hope to talk more with my fellow military wives. Thanks for starting this thread! Have a fantastic week everyone!! -
will my story ever stop?
Tgarden replied to LilMissDiva Irene's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
God bless you, Irene! You have been through an awful lot in your Quest to achieve a healthy life. My story is similar to yours, just not the sleeve part. I had the band put in 6 years ago, and went to see my dr wanting it OUT after years of trouble. The nurse asked if I had considered a revision, and here I am 3 weeks away from my bypass surgery. Like you, I suffer from reflux and heartburn, so the sleeve was not my best choice. I feel like over the years it has become more documented that the sleeve can cause heartburn or reflux to increase, but perhaps it just wasn't a common side effect when you had yours? Either way, like you said, what's done is done. I wish you success in finding relief. This board is a fantastic place for advice and stories. -

Thanks for sharing. It is important for all potential sleevesters to hear all stories...good and bad. Luckily, my band to sleeve revision went very well and I'm nearly 3 weeks out. Help out your MIL and give her support so she can meet her grandchild. I know that it is an exciting time for you...I just had my first baby 4.5 months ago. I can't tell you how much joy your little one will bring. I wanted to be healthy in the long term for my little boy and that is why I decided to get the sleeve. Luckily my surgeon is wonderful here in the US and I've had great post op care. Good luck to you and your family.
