February 2020 Post-Op Thread
Seige replied to ResaRoo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lisa, you’ve come too far to lust for other people’s food. I have seen too many people go through bypass surgery, and put the weight back, way more rapidly, than the rate it came off. I think that’s why I put off having the sleeve procedure for so long. Get yourself together. You wouldn’t lust for someone else’s partner, and act on it! As for the hair, I’ve experienced hair loss before, after strict dieting, or surgeries. My part was getting wider and wider. At the suggestion of my dermatologist, I started taking a Hair, Skin, & Nails formula, gummy vitamin, with a high amount of Biotin. It takes about 8 weeks. You should see new, baby hairs coming in. It’s not breakage. enjoy your socializing. Savor the company. Forget the food. -
GALS who started their journey over 300 lb+<br /> +

I was 339 on 5/26 at my pre-op appt. Day of surgery was at 320 and two weeks out am at 312. I had my lapband removed are the same time as the bypass and had an allergic reaction to the skin glue. I am on my 2nd round of steroids, ugh. Hopefully this will help and get it cleared up. I go back to work on the 29th and I know my pants rubbing is going to drive me nuts all day long. -
Had my bypass on 6/09. Recovery for me was better than expected pain wise. Only thing that happened was I had a really bad allergic reaction to the skin glue they used to close the incisions. I am on my 2nd round of steroids. Hopefully this will work it’s magic, my belly looks like a welted lobster, red and itchy. I am on purées now and in about a week can move on to soft/mushy foods. I go back to work on Monday, so can’t wait, I have been going stir crazy at home. Hope everyone has a great day.

ISO success stories with Hashimoto's and Sleeve
Phoenix20 replied to kellieym's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
hi there. i have been on hypothyroid meds for like at least 7 years. i too have struggled with weight and my primary recommended i look into vsg. i know some people develop GERD but as sleeve is the less invasive, that is the best option for many people, myself included. you can always revise if you have to, but many people seem to thrive after vsg though each case is unique in its own way. i've been back and forth but i think this is the best option for me and im sticking to my july 20 vsg date. good luck to you! -
Thank you, everyone, for your honest responses. I am considering gastric bypass and know it is a big life decision. Is there a best place to post questions about the mental/emotional piece?

# 8 months post OP - maintaining well - below goal - happy
New&Improved posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hello there just doing my monthly check in for those who are interested. So it's officially 8 months since I had my RNY BYPASS surgery. My journey has been good. Started high weight of 322lbs and I've been in maintenance now 2 months. I sit consistently around 165LBS most days but my lowest recent weight was 163lbs. I have definitely been enjoying alot more variety in my diet since maintenance began and I can tolerate most foods but still use shakes if needed. I am now consuming around 1500kcal most days even a few treats here and there without any side effects or weight gain. I'm feeling amazing and looking good. I'll be 36 in about 5 weeks but feel healthier than I have in 20 years!!! I am glad I did the right research and chose the BYPASS as my first and only surgery and I'm amazed how well I've done. never ever expected to lose 100% EBW but I've done it and my surgeon says I'm an anomaly only about 5% of his patients ever lose that much 😊 I know it's only early days and things might change in regards to malabsorption of calories and such but I'll be sure to keep an eye on my weight for the long term. I just want everyone to see it is possible to be successful and reach all your goals. you just have to be 150% focused on your goals from day 1. Thank you all and I'll appreciate any comments. Sleeve to Bypass due to GERD
Tracyringo replied to beaker27's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a lot of restriction with sleeve and with everything I ate. I don't have that restriction now, so that was scary for me. I have dumping now and it sucks. I still have GERD so far. One weird thing is the weight loss. I do believe the bypassing of calories is very true, at least it is for me. I am only a month in so I want to see what happens next month. -
Sleeve to Bypass due to GERD

Thanks for the reply! This revision stuff can be scary and makes me nervous. I guess just the not knowing part. Would you mind elaborating on the differences? What was your experience like? -
What do you wish you had known
PlanetHopper replied to Embody's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I wish I would have known that dumping syndrome can happen even if you get the VSG. It's happened to me, multiple times. I also wish I would have been less scared of loose skin and excess hair shedding and went for Bypass. -
Insurance Requirements — Have any of you ever bypassed or shortened the wait period?
mil_unloaded replied to mil_unloaded's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My gastroenterologist said that the only way they would do the hiatal hernia repair at my current weight is to also do my gastric bypass at the same time. Otherwise I would have to lose 150+ pounds before they would even do the repair. That could take 3+ years without the surgery... -
Hello I had the gastric bypass yesterday. I have had urinary retention since surgery. Voiding about 300cc in 24hours. No urge to go. Also, around 24 hours post op my stomach is so bloated and tight. I have an OnQ pump in for pain I’m worried this may not be the norm

Did you get gastric bypass in June?
Activeurit posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
HELP! I recently had gastric bypass, 6/16 to be exact. It's been 10 days and I have only lost 10 lbs [emoji35] is this normal? How much weight have you lost so far? Btw I had my 1st bowel-movement today for the first time since surgery, I feel like I should take magnesium citrate to get cleaned out..... but I'm just scared- I honestly don't want to make things worse. -

Hi there. I have a significant hiatal hernia, it causes a lot of pain and discomfort any time that I eat. I had an endoscopy to rule out infection or strangulation of the stomach. Anyway, the findings were that it’s likely that I have nerve damage in my hiatal hernia area and diaphragm. I have a telemedicine appointment with my bariatric surgeon on Monday, it’s my first consultation. My insurance “requires” 6 months of nutrition education before they will sign off on the surgery. I’m not asking to do it in 2 weeks, or even a month. I’m just curious if anyone out there has been able to petition their insurance with the help of a physician to shorten that time frame. I’m aware that I’ll need to do the work before the surgery, but my concern is being in this pain for 6 months. I can do maybe 2-3 months. Anyway, if you have been able to do this, or know of someone that has, can you just give me some insight? I’m not familiar with how insurances work. -
Sleeve to Bypass due to GERD
Tracyringo replied to beaker27's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had heartburn before the sleeve and reflux runs in my family, so I should of had the bypass to begin with but the surgeon said go with the sleeve and so I did. I loved my sleeve and I am sure you will love yours. Fingers crossed you never have the GERD. My revision was awfully painful and the differences between the two are something else. -

BYPASS is best option -
My dr told me that alcohol was a serious no-go post op. She literally described it as becoming as addictive as CRACK because of the way the body processes it (post bypass)... was she exaggerating?

Sleeve to Bypass due to GERD
animallover1247 replied to beaker27's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a revision and my surgeon made me do the preop and nutrition class again. The insurance needed to do a peer review with my dr but it was approved. You should not have an issue. -
Sleeve to Bypass due to GERD
Foxbins replied to beaker27's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm another sleeve to bypass revision due to GERD, which I didn't have before my sleeve. I would not have LINX, too similar to LapBand for me. When will doctors figure out that foreign bodies in the GI tract eventually cause problems? Like Tracyringo I'm on Medicare and it took a week for them to approve the surgery and another 2 weeks to get it scheduled. I had an upper GI, EGD, manometry, and a BRAVO test (yup, have GERD, told them that without the test) but other than those to nail down the diagnosis I haven't had any other test or diets or hoops to jump through. I'm scheduled for Monday 6/29. Because your revision is for medical reasons, I would expect the process to go quickly for you, too. Good Luck! -
Sleeve to Bypass due to GERD
beaker27 replied to beaker27's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thank you for that information! Hopefully, mine will be scheduled quickly then, too! Sorry, to hear you are still having acid reflux! It's funny, I didn't have it at all before the sleeve, now possibly revising to a bypass. Wondering if I had the bypass originally, would I have this problem at all. -
Sleeve to Bypass due to GERD
Tracyringo replied to beaker27's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am on Medicare and also had my sleeve in 2017. I did not have to do any of the stuff I did the first time they just scheduled my surgery. I also was at original goal so if you have weight gain ect I am not sure how that would work. BTW I still have acid a month out of revision and I am not the only one their are others in this forum that still have it after revision. Good luck. -
I'm in the early stages of going in for a revision to a gastric bypass.... I had the sleeve in 2017, and developed acid reflux from that surgery. The acid reflux/heartburn only developed and worsened, despite being on twice daily Protonix. Eventually, this year, I got an upper GI where they found I had severe acid reflux (which I could knew. lol), then also had a EGD scope and found a hiatal hernia. I'm working with my original surgeon of the sleeve, and he is telling me there are 2 options; to insert the LINX, or convert to a bypass, since that should remove the acid in the stomach. My insurance does not cover LINX as they deem it experimental, but would cover the bypass if medically necessary. Wondering for the people that had to convert to bypass due to GERD, what, if any, were your insurance requirements? Is it similar to the first surgery; office visits, nutritionist, etc? Just curious how long of a road this might be until I can have the bypass, or what I need to prepare for. Thanks for listening.
