HELP! Soft food phase diet
LindafromFlorida replied to AliciaRenee84's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You do not say when you had surgery. At 6 months post op my husband and I eat 1 boiled egg or 1 scrambled egg and cannot add anything extra because that fills us up. I would never make a casserole for the two of us and we steer clear of any kind of potato or pasta, and bread, because we do not want to go back to gaining weight. At 5 weeks post op I choked terribly on a small piece of soft crockpot chicken (thought I was having a heart attack), so went two more weeks on soft foods. We have kept our meals simple. No fuss. Tonight we shared ONE Chic-Fil-A asian salad, and could only eat half. I recommend eating a slow, small amount of anything, and see how full you get really fast. I would eat about 2-3 level T. refried beans, with melted Laughing Cow cheese melted, very filling. At 3 months I was told I was eating too much protein and I started substituting more soft veggies, especially zucchini. I did try the turkey meatballs, with a little sauce (barbecue) because dry meats might tend to stick in your chest. You could add a little mushroom soup to simmer them in, with some Worcestershire sauce or spices you like. I relied on a small yogurt every day for breakfast (less than 13 grams of sugar), no lunch, and dinner has always been very light and uncomplicated. BTW, I think my first favorite "food" was a lowfat turkey chili I made for Christmas, as I was craving something a little spicy. Had no problem with that. Best of luck! -
Did anyone find that once they lessened their dependency on Protein shakes and stared eating more real food, their weight loss progressed faster? Been stalled for 3 weeks now after 9/29 surgery. Right now, a typical day is... B- pure Protein shake S- dannon light and fit vanilla Greek yogurt (1 carton) L- canned chicken (3 oz) with light mayo S - pure protein shake D - lean protein like fish or chicken (3 oz) S - pure protein shake Usually ends up at about 700 calories and 120g protein. So those numbers are OK per the NUT. But, wondering if the shakes may be causing the stall. Going to start tomorrow having a scrambled egg for Breakfast and some nuts for morning snack, keeping 1 shake a day. May have to supplement with some unflavored Protein powder to get to the number. Just wondering if anyone else stalled due to the shakes. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Hi, Yes the hunger does subside but the secret is push Water. In order to get veggies and fruit in fresh, wash and blend with water. Here is a green smoothie that helped me curb the hunger and keep my Vitamin intake good. handful of parsley or spinach or any leafy greens 1 green onion 1 tomato small 1/2 cucumber 1 cup low fat yogurt or water blend until completely liquified drink it right away to assure you get your Vitamins. You can also do this with your fruit. Try it with soya milk and fruit its good and feels like you are cheating. As the weight starts to come off you will become motivated and hunger will be controlled. Good luck and let me know in a week how your doing. Remember you can blend anything your family eats with yogurt and drink it. Remember to get in food with Iron in it. I became anemic after surgery.

Protein Shake/Bars: What's your favorite?
kadams116 replied to Roserie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a hard time tolerating most shakes. What seemed to taste fine to me before surgery, was too sweet and rich after. Most of them gagged me. I wasted a lot of money. I finally found one I can drink. It is the "body by vi" protein drink. It is a high quality, easy to digest protein with lots of nutrition. The powder is 90 calories for 2 scoops with 30 grams of protein. It taste good by itself, but you can add frozen fruit, yogurt, etc. if you like. I personally like it without any additives. You can buy it from a rep if you know one but can also find it on amazon. -
Yaaaaaaaaay, eggs, beans, potatos OH MY!
Chris R replied to newme31's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Mashed potatoes are on my stage 3 (after full liquids) diet and are good mixed with plain greek yogurt (tastes like sour cream, but has a nice bit of protein!) Also, I know you don't like cottage cheese, but if you mix 1/4 c cottage cheese with an egg and a little cold water and beat it up and scramble it, it's very tasty (seasoned to you liking) and really doesn't taste anything like cottage cheese. -
First business trip since surgery is tomorrow
Talaria posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 3.5 weeks post op and I have my first business trip tomorrow. Fortunately it's a 24 hr trip to DC (I live in Boston), and it's significantly shorter and time and distance as compared to my usual trips overseas. Nonetheless, I'm worried not about what I'll eat, but about STAMINA. I'm friggin' EXHAUSTED. DEPLETED. Just so, so tired. I'm getting Protein and liquids in, but I go to bed at 7:30 every night. I know I'm still healing but I just feel so tired. Since I can't bring my Protein shake through security, my plan is to drink on the way to the airport, get a Greek yogurt and big bottle of Water at the airport, nap on the plane, and I built in time for a nap before my work event tomorrow evening. Fingers crossed I can make it through this! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
1 week post op....don't know what I'm doing
KristenLe replied to nicki72's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That's unfortunate you didn't get better information. You should be concentrating on high Protein / low carb. At your stage (if you are at the puree stage) - you could eat things like hummus, creamy soups (no chunks), cottage cheese, ricotta cheese (there's a ricotta bake recipe online), Greek yogurt (watch the sugars), eggs, sugar free pudding, and of course, Protein shakes. If you follow the typical post-op diet of protein first, low carb and get all of your Water in (non caloric drinks) then you won't fail. Good luck! -
Which brand of yogurt did you have if any during the pre op 2 weeks. I'm allowed one a day. This is day 6 for me and I had a yogurt for the first time yesterday. And I started to feel hungry which I haven't all week and later when I came home I got a headache. I can't remember the name because it was odd. You can get it at whole foods. It wa a nonfat 5oz yogurt,100 cal, 0.5g of fat, 5grams of fiber and 14 g of protein and 13g of carbs. How bad was this?

Thank God they came out with this! Now I can help myself stay regular and eat Greek yogurt at the same time! And it actually tastes better than the Chobani and Yoplait to me! 12g of protein in 4 oz... I'm loving it!

Surgery next week and worried
innertube replied to cmcallister2's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Basically, you need to think Atkins diet, plus at least 60 to 70 grams of protien, whey chocolate is really good., I used 2% milk., or you could use 1%, cut out all carbs., ie: low fat yogurt, protien drinks, protien bars, lean meats, fish, grilled chicken only.. keep your fat and carbs to a minimum.... again think Atkins... I did this for 7 days before surgery...thanks to some advise and I am doing great, I had surgery on 3/7 and so far I am doing awesome and I have lost 7.8 lbs.. Hope this helps, good luck. and don't worry its not as bad as you think.... :huh2: -
Questions from a newbie...

We tell patients to try for two weeks. We suggest yogurt and water. This cause the liver to let go of fat quickly there by making band placement quicker using less General Anethesia and less recovery time overall. Its part of the Safe Protocol. Its what we pay the Dr.s for. Don't shortcut this stuff you are the only one that will suffer. -
I thought I would have to do a liquid pre op diet, too. I planned for it. I was sort of disappointed (weird, huh?). I decided to do something like it anyway, to jump start my weight loss and help me start implementing a real change in my eating. Since last Monday I've been following this: 6am - Protein shake 9am - Greek yogurt 11-1 (actual time varies by work schedule) - Protein Shake 3pm - snack, humus or Greek yogurt 5pm - protein shake 7pm - tilapia and steamed green veggie (broc, Beans, or asparagus) I try to drink three 23.7 oz bottles of Water every day, and have my Vitamin routine down., I've lost four pounds since last Monday. :-)

I'm one week into my 2 week preop diet. It consists of 2 shakes a day either protein or no sugar carnation instant breakfast, nonfat yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, steamed or raw veggies and fruit. ( they gave a couple of different meal plans switching up the servings on these so the amount varies). I can also have up to 64 oz of low calorie sugar free fluids like crystal light, unsweetened iced tea, water, sf jello, sf popsicle, or broth.

I only have to do the diet one week before. I started Sunday with modified liquids. I'm allowed only veggies and plain warm cereals, protein drinks, jello/ Popsicles and plain yogurt. It's very boring but I've come to realize I don't need tht much food to function. What's the sugar buster diet?

Creamy Stage Day 1
mistysj replied to onedaycloser's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Of course you can have ham. Just purée it. Same with chicken. You probably should have blended the eggs too. Eggs are not creamy (I assume you scrambled them). Smooth peanut butter would have been better. I don't have a problem with a but of mashed potato but add some cheese or protein powder. you can have cottage cheese, I bet. And yogurt. -
I start every day with Protein hot cocoa, but you do have to watch the temp and warm it up slowly. I warm a cup of unsweetened almond milk in the microwave, add a scoop of chocolate Protein Powder and 2T unsweetened cocoa and a dash of salt (cuts the artificial sweetener flavor), and mix very well with a whisk. Sometimes I thin it a bit with some hot Water, or microwave it a few seconds longer to warm it up, but it will thicken a lot if you get it too hot - the protein "firms" up (like cooking an egg). You can actually use this tendency to cook to your advantage - there are a lot of recipes "out there" for protein "cake" or "muffins" or even "cookies" made with protein powder and often eggs, other liquids, sweetener, etc. cooked in a minute or two in the microwave. Some flavors of protein powder are really good added to plain greek yogurt - I like the nectar twisted cherry this way. Or, blend with almond milk and ice cubes to make a kind of soft serve ice cream. I've always been told the best protein is whey protein isolate - it's best digested by your body so you get the most benefit from it, but it's also the most expensive, so for cheaper brands you'll often find a blend of whey protein isolate and whey protein concentrate.

4 wks post surgery, gaining weight and panicking
kimba6999 replied to Happygoomom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello and sorry to hear your troubles. I am just about 6 months post and i have had a couple of stalls during my journey. You mentioned you r havinf problems getting in ur protein? From experience i can tell you that not getting in ur minimum could be causing the problem. It is very important to get in your Proteins. I know you are still newly starting but do what it taoes to get in ur protein. I eat 800-900 cal a day on avg and i eat 80-100g of protein a day so it is possible. Just choose food high in protein, low in fat and low in sugar. I do not count carbs but thats because i dont eat things carb related. I eat whole foods, i occassionally eat a slice of bread but whole wheat or have mashed potatoes but homemade no box. So my carbs are healthy carbs. You will have stalls, its part of losing weight in any form. Just dont get discouraged. My NUT told me that your body will acclimate so you need to change things up every 4-6 wks. So i change up my exercise routine and my eating plan so my body no longer has time to adjust. Gotta keep her guessing! This was not a waste for you. Just eat high protein and get at least 64oz of Water and get in exercise daily. Once you can start really working out get yourself a good routine and as a suggestion for exercise, do your research! I warm up and the do strength training and then my cardio. You will burn alot more calories and for a much longer period. I feel being well informed on this journey is the key to success. Just stay positive and tell that doctor to take a hike. My surgeon is one of the leading surgeons on gastric surgery. His team has done some of the most ground breaking surgeries in thi field. I have had the greatest success with the team here. They are here for every worry and question i can think of and kindly help. I also agree with a previous post about a support group. It will really help you to find one around you. You need the support especially early on when you have so many questions. I hope this encourages you. If you have the time just do some research. Remember to stick to high protein, chicken, turkey, fish, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, whey protein isolates, and more. Good luck and if you need help or have questions and i can be of service plz feel free to ask. I will help if i can. Btw, i started at 356 and am now 252. Down 104 in just under 6 months, so doing what ur supposed to does work. Let me know how your doing in the time ahead. -
Pre-op liquid diet -- not required by surgeon but thinking I want to do it anyway
beautyqueen replied to beautyqueen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks so much for the replies. I will look into the Isopure, I've read about that before. I can definitely work with a high protein/low carb diet, I'll do some looking online for some ideas. I'm thinking eggs, greek yogurt, grilled chicken and salad, etc. Thanks! -
When will I learn how to eat?
vegasneon replied to vegasneon's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did decide to go back to what was on the full liquids so shakes, yogurt & cottage cheese. I'd like to have Soup but it's not appetizing in the heat. I had thought maybe I wouldn't feel so weak & tired if I ate puréed food but it didn't help that anyway. Sent from my iPhone using VST
