  1. Just had my revision 4 weeks ago! My liquid diet was protien shakes, broths, low sugar yogurt, low fat cottage cheese, sugar free jello, and sugar free popsicles. Oh, and any sugar free drinks (non-carbonated) and tea. I had a sleeve 7 years ago and gained all my weight back as well. I decided to do gastric bypass because I knew I needed more permanent help if I wanted to truly get healthy. I was arrogant and not in the right frame of mind when I got my sleeve so I sabotaged myself. This time, I was 100% ready and its been soooo much better and the will power to want to do better seems almost natural now. Having said that, when I did my liquid diet before surgery, I dropped weight so fast! 12 lbs in 1 week and was down 21 lbs by the time my surgery rolled around (3.5 weeks). So, doing the liquid diet again definitely re-starts your sleeve but it will be up to you to keep up the diet after, which for me is the hard part. Good luck, whatever you decide to do!

    Eating Hurts - Any Tips?

I agree with the others. The best advice that my sister (who had her surgery three weeks before mine) gave me was to chew, chew and chew some more. Take your time and stop eating if it starts to hurt. You will learn your limits as you go. I found that black pepper was the culprit in my case and I stopped adding it to my food until 3 months after the surgery. Chicken, meat and eggs were particularly difficult for me. Yogurt (low fat) was my go to food. Also try to avoid drinking water for at least half an hour after you eat. It will be difficult at first but it will get better. Hang in there!

    Eating Hurts - Any Tips?

You probably just need to wait a bit longer before progressing to soft foods. Different surgeons have different post-op diets; mine didn't start soft foods until week 3 (scrambled eggs and ricotta bake are soft foods, not purees). Can you eat pureed foods like yogurt, pudding, refried beans (when I was in the pureed stage, I was told to puree even refried beans in a food processor until completely smooth)?

    Eating Hurts - Any Tips?

My guess is you're progressing a bit too fast and/or eating too much. You might try something simpler like a TBS of yogurt and see how you do, Scrambled eggs are notoriously difficult for people at first and the Ricotta Bake might also be a bit much for only 9 days post surgery. For comparison, some plans have you on full liquids for 2 weeks post surgery.
  5. I just cannot do yogurt taste like sour milk to me and I am worried when I get to that stage.
  6. If you look in the heading banner, find Forums and use the drop-down arrow. You will find 14 pages of Pre op diets. In the Uk we have different diets so my help would be unhelpful. I can say that by being on this forum for over a year, I have picked up some knowledge of the US diets. I believe the norm is 4 shakes, sugar free popsicles and maybe a fat free yogurt. This lasts about 2 weeks. With a bit of luck someone will chip in who actually did your pre op diet. Nobody on here will call you a failure, we are a kind bunch. Please give yourself some love. You have gone through so much and you didn't mention Covid. That alone made me pack on another 30+ pounds. I was doing the best I could, so did you. Don't be a stranger anymore. September surgery buddies!!

I'm super jealous. I moved on to "pureed", foods, but it's just Cottage Cheese, Ricotta Cheese, and Yogurt only until my 2 week appointment. Only after that am I allowed to move to things like beans, chicken, tuna, etc. I can't even do the ricotta bake until then (I asked).

    High Fiber Food

If this is to "keep things moving", so to speak, you might benefit from consuming probiotics (either in capsule form or in something like yogurt.). I eat a ton of salads that have lots of fiber and I still had issues and eating a small yogurt every morning has helped a lot.

    September surgery buddies!!

So today for the first time since surgery (9/20) I think I felt… hungry? I woke up with stomach pain- really bad. But not like from the soreness or incision. I drank Gatorade protein and it went away. Then throughout the day it was the same. I’ve never had acid reflux so I am hoping it’s not that. Coincides that today is my first day away from clear liquids. I had a protein shake, a yogurt, and a cup of baked potato soup (only the liquid no chunks). The pain came back a few hours later and I had a cup of skim milk for dinner and it went away. Hunger pangs or GERD?

Had my two week check in with the surgeon! It was over the phone so very basic, he just asked how my incisions were healing, what my weight was, if I was taking my vitamins, and how fast I could consume 4oz of liquid. He said everything sounded like I was on track. I asked him if I could try thicker soups like split pea or butternut squash, he said yes but they had to be a runny cream consistency and I have to wait for eggs, cottage cheese, ricotta till the puree phase, which I was kind of hoping he'd let me start a week early, but that made me feel like the answer would be "no" lol. It's probably for the best though, because I went straight to the store and bought some creamy split pea soup and wow after maybe three small bites I was like "yeah, this feels different" and it took me an hour to get through 4oz. I'm both surprised and not surprised; on one hand it is an actual food as opposed to liquid, but on the other hand, Greek yogurt and pudding is allowed on my liquid diet and they are heavy but take me about 30mins to get through 4oz. Funny how my body knows the difference between a vegetable and a liquid, even at a similar consistency. My dietitian didn't have me follow the 30min before 30min after rule with yogurts, but I'm definitely doing it with the peas soup. My next check in with the surgeon is in 4 weeks, hopefully it'll be a good one too.

Have you tried mixing protein powder into food? You can try unflavored protein powder and mix it into anything, but I personally think it tastes gross. In my early post-op phases, I liked to mix chocolate protein powder into sugar-free chocolate pudding, vanilla protein powder into yogurt, cinnamon protein powder into oatmeal, etc. I found that much more palatable than protein shakes. Also, protein hot cocoa is delicious.

    Latuda

Thanks for sharing! My doc told me to take it with what food I can and if I start feeling like its not working, then we'll make a change. So far I'm doing okay, I also eat regular greek yogurt in the morning when I take it, so that's probably helping. In the beginning, before Latuda, we tried Abilify and my body does not like it!

    Latuda

Hello! Fellow latuda taker here. I was actually told to switch my medication to something else until I could eat larger amounts again. My surgeon told me the 400 cal requirement just wouldn't be possible in the post operative diet phases. And he wasn't wrong. I could only eat about 200 cals at a time. My psychiatrist put me on abilify but then we changed it last minute back to Latuda. I discovered that eating fattier foods helped me absorb it better so instead I would eat a purred high fat food like full fat yogurt and a piece of soft cheese then take my pill. It did the trick and I stayed very stable throughout the diet phases. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. This has all been super confusing for me and I wish my doctor's office would have explained a lot more than they did. I watched that seminar yesterday and it has really helped. (Jessica Snyder Pre-operative nutrition) It said to try to drink 4 oz of water every 15 minutes. You just constantly have the water next to you. Drink 2-4 oz of protein 6 x daily. I am also taking a liquacel one time daily and it bumps 16 grams up. One of the protein drink smoothies that I love and it is super easy is: almond milk, pbfit powder, vanilla protein powder and a dash of cinnamon. I tried a yogurt based on Friday and I was super sick on Saturday so going to hold off for that one. I drink bone broth for a lot of my meals. I like Kettle and Fire.

    3 weeks Post Gastric Sleeve

I couldn't eat puree's either, just looking at it brought on instant nausea. I went back a stage to yogurts, soups and milk shakes
  16. Yes! I can’t use any of the things I was depending on. No G2Z with protein, no protein shakes, no popsicles, no sf jello, no sf pudding, no yogurt….nothing sweet. It makes me so very nauseas. Blech. Sweet tooth is gone! During my week of full liquids, I pretty much lived on Progresso’s Creamy Chicken Soup broth and Manhattan clam chowder broth. They were all that tasted good to me.

I have started the pre op early. To prep myself when it begins. My preop is breakfast shake, lunch shake, dinner 4 oz of lean meat/tuna and 2 cups of non starchy veggies. 1 snack (2 string cheese or 6 oz carb master yogurt, or 1 cheese string and 4 oz of carb master yogurt) I think I can do other snacks but I don’t like them. My WLS team advise me I was pant to do 4 oz eggs for dinner. Eggs seem to fill me up and keep me fuller longer. Bone broth has become my best friend. I really like the chicken Zoup Bone broth. It curbs those cravings. And the calcium citrat chews, at 4pm I chow down on those 3 that I am allowed to have. But will have to stop them 9-27-22. All I can say to prep myself and keep myself in track is to remember Be BORING when it comes to my food. And keep my focus on my goal. It is really hard when I am cooking for my kid, and making them sweet tea or buying them snacks. LOL my kid asked if it was bad thing I had to cook. I said “I guess that depends on who is doing the cooking and who is doing the eating” lol He tells me it’s isn’t that bad. I said good you can do it with me. He laughed and said ummm I don’t have a relationship with food the way you do. And I am already skinny. (He was not being negative, we have a sarcastic joking relationship) I just reminded him he said the diet wasn’t that bad. He laughed and said I am don’t need to suffer cause you had a toxic relationship with food. I am going I am going to get a new healthy relationship with food and set those boundaries!!!!

    I tried real food

I'm also on the soft/puréed food phase. I can eat a whole yogurt (5.3 Oz) or a whole packet of tuna (2.6oz) or a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese or a whole 11oz protein shake (or even a whole 32 oz water) fairly easy with no fullness or restriction and it really is upsetting me so I understand

    September surgery buddies!!

I've pretty much tried them all and I think most of the chewables are less than ideal. It's the iron that makes them taste "off". They also are all sweet, so if you're having issues with sweet things, these probably won't be a good choice. This is why my team actually recommended the capsules. If you can't swallow them, or get an upset tummy if you do, just open them up and sprinkle them into a drink, yogurt, or broth, etc. Seems to work for most folks early post surgery.

    August surgery buddies!

Yes to this! I lost every day the first week and now I am just about a month out and have only lost 1 more pound. I see my doctor at the end of the month and I'm afraid they are going to think I'm not following the diet. I am. I have a protein shake for breakfast, yogurt for lunch and an egg for dinner. I was told not to add any more protein shakes because those count as meals and I'll have too many meals if I do that. I am honestly sort of regretting the surgery a bit since I'm barely eating but not losing any weight. I could have just had the hiatal hernia surgery if I wasn't going to lose weight. I feel like I've permanently altered my insides for nothing. It has been very frustrating for me. A friend of mine had surgery and has lost over 100 lbs in 5 months and she has even told me that sometimes she cheats. I am happy for her, but frustrated at my lack of losing.

I had the gastric sleeve a month and four days ago. I did not get a calorie level recommendation from anyone, no. Currently, I am eating every three or so hours, but I cannot stomach either protein powders or greek yogurt. So I eat mostly chicken, eggs, fish, ground beef and some veggies. Not a lot of fruit. Sometimes a half or a whole protein bar per day. I cannot eat much more than around 40-50 grams of meat at a time. If I eat more I will throw up. So, I'm pretty much eating as much as I can. The only way to increase the calories would be with fruit juice or something like that, which is not on my list of recommended foods.

How far PO are you? Is there a calorie level your nutritionist recommends? Mine had me bump to 800, I'm eating 4 meals a day plus a snack. Every 3 hours I'm eating 2 oz of protein + 2 oz of either veg, carb or fruit. Snack is greek yogurt w protein powder. Constantly putting calories in, 150ish at a time. I feel so full of energy last week, walking 40-60 minutes a day between 2 or 3 walks. Plus I'm just up off my butt so much more than I used to be. I'd check w nutritionist, but maybe a little more calories?
  23. My first week was clear liquids and protein drinks weren’t allowed. This week I have been allowed, but they are just sickeningly sweet to me. I was able to get down a third of an Atkins shake by cutting the whole shake with about 1/4 cup of heavy cream. Mostly I’m living on Creamy chicken soup broth and it hits the spot. So good. Before surgery, I loved the Gatorade Zero with Protein. Now I hate it. Ditto on sf pudding…yogurt…protein shakes…anything sweet. All I want in this life is a fried egg with half a piece of toast.

Not eating, drinking or walking enough…

I had surgery 9 months ago and didnt hit my goals until at least 6 months along. I had so much nausea and vomiting that taking the extra vitamins and calcium was tough. So I rarely did. I never ever got enough water or protein. Then on the 6th month I saw the right person and got the help I needed. Two doses of the right PPi a day. My husband was so worried for me. Since then I have gained strength and can do loads more. My body tells me when its time to rest and sometimes take a day off. I rarely get more than 60 gms of protein a day and if I had not found protein yogurts that I could stomach, I would still struggle. My calorie count is about 650 to 1000 a day. I am lucky that I have no hunger. I dont count my liquid intake but its probably less than it should be but I am ok with that. Its not a biggy with my team either. I am not dehydrated I can walk anywhere I want to now as before I would need a walking stick to go the shortest distance and be puffing like an old train. I may have had a slow start but it has not affected my weight loss, other than having more stalls when I have not been able to eat enough. Every persons journey is different. Its hard not to compare yourself to others but it does no good in the long run. I didnt exercise until month 6 and I knew I didnt have enough strength to do more than keep my home clean and go shopping. Now most days I have too much energy This surgery makes your hormones go stratospheric. Even at my age I knew my hormones where out of whack. My poor hubby couldn't understand why I was so short with him. I was just like when I had PMT again. My team were never bothered about my progress, just helpful I hope you get through your period quickly and get the right amount of ppi for the nausea. You will then gallop along
