Lapband revision to Gastric bypass/Bariatric surgery exclusion
liveaboard15 replied to hollywrites2u's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yea i made sure to read all of the fine print in regards to exclusions and sure enough if you end up in the hospital due to a issue from bariatric surgery it wont be covered. so stupid. its why i went with this particular surgeon because they offer complication insurance for the self pay people. -
Lapband revision to Gastric bypass/Bariatric surgery exclusion

i also have florida blue... they exclude bariatric surgery here in florida. no way around that. i tried. i am doing self pay here in jacksonville, fl. best is to call around and get pricing for your procedures you want. also something to consider if you have issues after surgery, florida blue will not cover any complications that come up due to the surgery. -

Hello! I had surgery on 2/22 and had major complications afterwards. I was in the hospital for 13 days out of the last month. I, too, had a hard time getting protein and fluids down and my weight loss has also stalled at 16 lbs. My doctor ordered thrice-weekly fluid and vitamin infusions for me. Perhaps you can ask your doctor about that. -
Do you think it's possible that it could be a stricture? Remember I'm pre op for RNY so I have no personal exerience with this and I'm still learning about RNY complications, but I've seen @catwoman7 speak of them in these threads. I believe she's said a person is most at risk from surgery to month 3? I'm not sure if I remember that correctly. But check the symptoms of stricture and see if it sounds plausible.

I did this so in the future me and my husband can have a child because of infertility issues from being over weight. My doctors said not to get pregnant for atleast 18-24 months because my body wouldn’t be able to support a child and myself with proper nutrition and would cause a high risk of complications during pregnancy. -

I've had a different mind set for awhile now. I'm doing this for me. I'm doing this because it's best for me. I did the research. I learned about weight set point. I've researched about Ghrelin (and Leptin). I've yo-yo dieted since I was a teen. I'm now in my 50's. I've spoken to those who have had wls. I've talked to physicians about success rates and complications. I'm sure you've done a lot of these things or more yourself. Besides, you already had the procedure. Shoot, I'd shut them down with that. But honestly, did you previously think of alternative ways to celebrate birthdays, holidays, etc. I would say that's an example of a change in thinking. Hell, you making changes like that is a major success in my book. You got this -
Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

I am one year out and have not had heartburn once yet. So there are definitely people on both sides of it. That being said it is a possible complication that you have to be aware of. Their is no shame in postponing your surgery if you are not ready. But I’d talk to the doctor and see if bypass is an option. I went with sleeve because I am on medication that I was worried about the absorption issues however bypass is the tried and true surgery. I would have gone with it if I wasn’t worried about my meds. -

My surgery was on the 1st. I returned to work (part time light janitorial) this past Monday and feel great! The complication I had ended up being just a small bump in the road to recovery. I've lost about 10 pounds so far. In a few days I get to start soft foods that have more texture to them, so stuff like a soft taco with ground beef and cheese. I'll be on that phase for 6 weeks. So I met with surgeon today for last appointment prior to insurance submission. I asked all my questions and we had a good discussion. He said of all the complications the real “thorn in their side” was ulcers. Even as an entire practice rate of ulcers is about 15-20% lifetime. And lifetime use of PPI or at least 4-5 years dropping to the lesser Pepcid etc type drugs forever. I am astonished by this!!! Is this true? Is there a reason it’s so high? I mean my mother in law had open RNY about 25 years ago and is not a model patient. She eats ibuprofen etc like crazy, tons of soda and the like and never an ulcer. Any opinions, suggestions on diet or anything to prevent? I’m not a smoker or alcohol user now but even without that’s the rate. Or, like doc said it is a surgery that creates ulcers based on plumbing. This has me really second guessing even more

Very well put! I agree that if you physically can't function or get around, then, by all means, get surgery!! Though for me, at 30 years old kindergarten teacher who was medically "healthy." It wasn't the right choice!! I would take being a thick size 18 over all the complications from acid reflux. I just wasn't told the severity in which the complications could be. It pisses me off!!

Issue of GERD with sleeve is definitely there. There are also some surgical complications that would hover our heads. But that is the reason why surgeons and doctors opt for surgery on the "pros outweighs the cons" concept. If you're worried of sleeve giving your GERD, look at the bypass option. Bypass is even used for long term GERD cure. There are also people on the forum who have had revision from sleeve to bypass because of GERD. So it isn't like you're stuck with having GERD for lifetime. You can do your research on bypass or if your mind is set on VSG, ask your doctor the options of PPI, revision to bypass etc etc etc if you end up with GERD-y complication. Good luck.

Ok. Just asking a question here....... since your surgery was 17years ago. Is it possible they have Perfected this surgery since you had it done? I've really been studying this surgery. ( I'm one to ask tons of questions) the info I get they are perfecting this procedure My surgeon told me about chances of acid reflux after surgery. He's been very up front about some complications.

Okay first of all, I never commented that anyone who does not agree with me is, "foolish and childish." My comment >>> And there's also other weight loss surgeries than the sleeve. Each surgery has it's own benefits and risks. It's best to get all of the information and read about personal outcomes to help decide which surgery is best for you or if surgery is even an option. But discounting real side effects/complications of wls is just foolish and chidlish. I commented that discounting real side effects/complications of wls is just foolish and childish. Secondly, "texts" as in typed comments on this site. Such as this the ead when you were being patronizing. Thirdly, I never once said anyone should NOT get VSG. Not once. Please show me where I typed that. I simply said... "Each surgery has its own benefits and risks. It's best to get all of the information and read about personal outcomes to help decide which surgery is best for you or if surgery is even an option." I posted ONE study. It's food for thought for those considering any weight loss surgery. I don't "keep quoting one study" I posted one once. You can't seem to make a viable rebuttal in this thread. You seem to be confusing me for saying things I didn't say and quoting studies that I didn't post. 🤦♀️

No one is discounting anything. All I am saying is that people should educate themselves and get a variety of opinions and sources. I am sure there are complications from GERD, but there are many, many, many complications from being morbidly obese. There are so many complications from morbid obesity that insurance companies and the FDA approve of these surgeries for these people. It is not because they want skinny people but because the overwhelming cost the insurance companies endure because of the complications of morbidly obese people. If the chance of GERD was as great as you are assuming, they would not pay for this costly procedure and use that as their crutch to get out of it. That is just business. The fact is, the cost to human life from morbid obesity is much, much greater than many give it credit for. Look at Covid alone, the obesity factor in death and bad outcomes was HUGE. And obesity, even moderate obesity in the high thirties and low 40 BMI ranges are devastating long term for cardiovascular health. That is a fact that is NOT disputed by medical doctors. I get that you are having a bad experience with GERD, but again, I say that I would rather have GERD than die a premature death because I was too afraid to have the surgery. The severity of GERD you are referring to does not happen at the rates that were previously identified in the "study". GERD, yes, but to the point you mention, absolutely not. I would say it is extremely rare and the medical professionals I spoke to confirm that.

Post weight loss surgery GERD is real. GERD so bad that PPI's can't touch it. PPI's have very bad side effects. I got a kidney stone from overuse of PPI's for post weight loss surgery GERD. GERD is causing wls patients to get Barrett's esophagus and Barrett's esophagus can become esophageal cancer. These are serious effects of weight loss surgery that should be taken seriously and all potential weight loss surgery patients should be aware that it's not just heartburn or reflux and depending on which surgery you choose, it could happen to you... It's an individual decision that one must weigh their own personal comorbidities/issues for deciding on wls against the benefits and risks of wls. And there's also other weight loss surgeries than the sleeve. Each surgery has it's own benefits and risks. It's best to get all of the information and read about personal outcomes to help decide which surgery is best for you or if surgery is even an option. But discounting real side effects/complications of wls is just foolish and chidlish.

I don't think one study is enough to change someone's opinion or make a certain outcome fact. There are studies done every day on various things coming up with totally different conclusions. The outcome is often, whether on purpose or not, supporting the opinion the study team goes in with and they prove their point. in real life, in the support groups I attend and the research I do online and through my Doctor, I have not seen what this is saying and if so, I see very few people who would not accept a trade off. I am one of those people who were obese, could run, jump, swim etc, etc but how long can someone at a 43-45% bmi continue to live like that? Along with the weight comes diabetes type II, High blood pressure, high cholesterol etc. These are all warning signs for heart disease. Given the choice of GERD or dying 15 years early due to heart disease, stroke, diabetes complications etc I would choose the GERD. The quality of life i have right now at 100 pounds less is incredible. The way I feel about myself and the confidence I have now is incredible. The feeling that I am not being looked at and scorned or fat shamed is incredible. The ability to run and play with my 5 y/o granddaughter and not struggle during and after is incredible. Don't let yourself be influenced by one study or one person. There are millions of positive testimonials out there, thousands of doctors and dieticians out there. The benefits far outweigh the few issues that SOME people may be having.

My original RNY was done in December 2000, and it was very successful, I lost 12 stone and life was good! I started to regain around 10 years post op nothing too drastic, but I had awful GERD and I was still vomiting sometimes which I thought was odd. Anyway fast forward to 2022 and I went to see about a revision, turns out after a gastroscopy I had a rare complication called candy cane syndrome and a fistula from the pouch to the old stomach! I went in for what should have been keyhole to end up having a full open operation as the surgeon could not find where one of the limbs from my previous surgery was connected to and my intestines were twisted (apparently called an intestinal hernias). Great it was not! I am now almost 5 weeks tomorrow post operation and getting back on my feet. I have been surprised at the weight loss 24lbs currently, which I guess will slow down as I only have 70lbs to loose now. I am also really shocked at the level of aftercare you get now! I'm at the soft food stage, and yesterday I found out I cannot eat fish pie yet! Two hours of pain then eventually throwing it all up. I had truly forgotten how horrible that is, my chest hurt and my throat was still sore this morning. Hoping it is not too soon after the surgery to be ill after eating, but pleased it's done and I can move on with it now.

I'm so sorry for what you have been dealing with. I recently had surgery, and I 100% regret my decision. I was relativity "healthy" by medical standards, but I was just FAT! I wish I would've just accepted myself and my body the way it was. The complications aren't worth the weight loss in my opinion.

Have you heard of Dr. Kini Subhash/was he your surgeon at Mount Sinai in NYC?
MandM1188 replied to MandM1188's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
BluPriscilla : I had the traditional duodenal switch surgery on Feb 1st 2022. I’m feeling alright to say the least . To say the most is to mention my 4 complications but I don’t feel like writing a novel about that right now . I wouldn’t trade the DS Surgery for nothing in the World. Go to your PCP to weigh you once a month , you need: EKG, endoscopy with H pylori bacteria test , blood work that mount sinai will order , psych evaluation, nutritionist appointment , letter of medical necessity from your PCP. -
Can you take CBD products before surgery (no vaping)
joelynnpamplin replied to Cherylmilla's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My classmate had his hernia on his navel operated on. And he then refrained from using CBD oil two weeks before the operation. He wasn't sure that the use of cannabis was prohibited before the operation in which he'd be given general anesthesia. He just stopped using it just in case it didn't cause any complications. Best Oklahoma dispensaries where he buys CBD oil supplies products to many people. I think good pharmacists are working in this company. So you can ask them a question on the hotline if you're very interested or worried about it! Good luck. I hope everything will be fine. -

Hi. I’m scheduled for the sleeve in TJ on 05/09. I’m a bit anxious about the possibility of complications but I’ve been telling myself for 25 years that I could do it alone. I intentionally scheduled my date a few months out so I can get mentally prepared for the required lifestyle changes and to read as much as I can about the process. -
WLS (sleeve) schedule for 4/26th 😁

I have tied diets and diet pills that my gynecologist put me on. I would lose in the past. But like you I would gain all plus some back. I even asked my WL surgeon yesterday about wl shots. And he said they would not help me. I've not been able to lose weight this past year at all. I gained over 40 lbs in 8 months last year. I've not really gained any more but I haven't lost and I've honestly tried to lose. What was your wl goal? I put on my paperwork 130 to 140. Not sure if I should go up on my goal. I guess the acid reflux was the only complication I actually worried about when he was going over everything. When I do get it it's the worse feeling (I just hate it) So I wonder should I start taking something now to prevent it just in case? -

My surgery was 2/22/22 and I had some major complications. I had internal bleeding and lost almost half of my blood volume. Then I had severe pain when eating and had to be admitted for 6 days for a PICC and TPN. Was released last Saturday. Still have intermittent severe pain when eating but am working through it. Doc has set me up with thrice-weekly fluid/vitamin infusions since I am only getting about 20-30 oz of fluids per day. I also can't transition to soft foods yet since I have a blood clot in my new pouch (which is what's causing all the pain) so it's just shakes for a few more days. I haven't regretted my decision to have the surgery yet but just wish I could get back to somewhat normalcy.
