  1. Hello Everyone!! I am about 1 week and a half away from being 3 months Post-Op! I am making this post so that I can get a heads up of any changes I should be expecting soon, I know one may or may not be hair loss, but my main question is will my weight loss begin to slow down drastically? I understand that these changes are different for everyone but I would still appreciate everyone's input since I don't know what to expect lol

    Minimal Weight Loss

Thanks everyone, I’m still pleased with what weight loss I’ve had already and I know everyone is different so shouldn’t compare to others but seems like everyone’s loss has been greater so just want to make sure it seems like I’m on track. Fully aware I won’t loose 60lbs overnight haha! only just moved onto soft food (no puree stage) been on liquid for 4 weeks. I’m tracking what I’ve started to eat on my fitness pal it’s still only circa 700/800 cals a day as portions and Snacks are small, getting my 60g Protein and Water intake as per my plan so everything seems on track for what I’m supposed to be doing. I feel great in myself - started to incorporate walking daily - I know I’m still early days so only time will tell 😊

    Minimal Weight Loss

Hello and welcome in this forum. I weighed in, heavier than you. I lost 15lbs during my 3 week pre op. Then 27lbs in the first month. So you seem on track to me. What kind of foods are you eating and are you tracking your proteins and calories ? Everyone has a different weight loss journey and its not a great idea to compare with others. Medications, age, height and medical issues are different with each person. This leads to different weight loss. Also how much you can walk or exercise can benefit weight loss.
  4. Hey, I had a VGS on 22nd Nov and now 4weeks PO. I’ve lost 22lbs so far (11lbs of this on the LRD pre surgery). I was hoping for a little more progress than where I’m at currently, I’ve been sitting at a loss of 22lbs for the last 2 weeks - I know of the 3 week stall period, just want to see if anyone had had similar losses to me in their first 4 weeks to see if I’m on track, as often posts I see it seems everyone has massive losses in the first month or so and mine seems a little low :( starting weight was 250lbs ans I’m 5ft 8in for reference - thank you

I'm the 27th and we have a couple of 29ths on here. One of them is across the pond though, so she is really like the 28.5th to me, in the US. We are all buddies! lol What is your program's pre-op? I have been on a full liquid diet for the past week and start clear liquids today. Fun. I've never looked so forward to "soft food" in my entire life. 😊

    Pregnancy like symptoms

Yep, I had the smell aversions after surgery, too. The first time I ate beef - it smelled disgusting while it was cooking. It tasted good, so I was able to eat it. But the smell was awful. For a few weeks, I was super-sensitive to perfumy smells. Scented candles and incense were the bane of my existence. I'm still a little sensitive to perfumes, but it's gotten a LOT better.

    Body Scale

I have 3 scales. lol My favorite is the Innotech wireless Bluetooth smart body scale that I got at bariatricpal. That thing is so consistent regarding weight. Up to date, it by far, the most consistent scale I've ever owned. I love the app too. My other two scales are not consistent at all, especially if I tilt or move.

Yep, I hear that. I'm in my first real stall since starting to lose weight. (Fake stalls are where it's obvious why you're not losing weight and it's cheeseburger or couch-shaped.) Trying to just stick with the program, keep up my activity and not freak out, but trying not to freak out is like trying not to breathe for me. 😂

    ARG!!

I just started yet another stall. Each one lasts longer than the last, and my last one was 4 weeks long. So I'm just settling in for the loooong miserable wait to get out of it. Last time I was in it, my nutritionist recommended adding weight training and switching up my calories (1200-1300 on working out days and 900-1000 on non working out days). I added weight training 2 days per week and eventually upped it to 3 days per week. I also reached out to my cousin (she's a professional trainer in AZ) and she gave me some tips for cardio to build up strength and switch up what I do. I ended up losing 13 pounds in 2 weeks doing that. Aaaaand...now my body is freaking out about the large amount of weight loss and I'm in a stall again.

    ARG!!

I feel your pain! I seems to hit long plateaus and they are frustrating. I saw that although the scale wasn’t moving in those weeks - my body was changing, clothes were still getting smaller, skin was firming or readjusting - so that was nice to see! I noticed my calories and protein were on the low side because I’m struggling with amounts I can eat but when I can bump those calories and protein up some, I would notice a loss. Keep up the good work! We can do this!! :)

    November 2022 Surgery Buddies

Regular texture food stage starts today, but I will stick with fish since I made 2 filets that will be like 3 meals lol. I'm allowed to go up an oz of food if I need to and can handle but I found my happy spot. I fly out of the country tomorrow, and have packed enough protein for a week, and will get yogurt to snack on. Had my 1st primary doc appt on Friday, blood pressure was in the normal range but still need to continue meds until she sees is stable after a few visits, lost over 20lbs since my las visit one week preop, my cholesterol went from 232 to 168 and everything else was in the normal range, even my fasting sugar was 79, when usually is in the 90s. She even checked my incisions to see how they were doing, and she will see me in 3 months to see about the bp and for my labs.

yea, it sucks! haha I have my 9 month follow up next week, I am just gonna check with the Dietician and see if he has any pointers to get it moving again. Currently, I am just following my plan and trying to wait it out.

Hmmm, yes it stinks. Its just not as much fun when you can not adjust your ticker every day. I use MY FAT SECRET to track my food and if I don't adjust my weight every two weeks it prompts me to update. It always feels as if it is judging me, lol. I usually swear at it.
  16. Excited to finally get to post on this thread. Today is the day I am making my first soft protein meal. I’ve tested the waters with a bite of lobster yesterday and a spoon of ricotta Saturday but have otherwise been on protein shakes and clear liquids since my surgery two weeks ago. I prepared a ricotta egg white omelette season with a pinch of salt, turmeric, and coriander. It went down slowly, but successfully and I’m feeling full quickly. There is definitely a significant difference between consuming food vs full liquids. Readjusting portions will certainly be a learning curve.

    December surgery

Today is the day I am making my first soft protein meal. I’ve tested the waters with a bite of lobster yesterday and a spoon of ricotta Saturday but have otherwise been on protein shakes and clear liquids since my surgery two weeks ago. Prior to surgery a well seasoned egg white omelette was a the most common breakfast meal for me, often with a side of Turkey sausage after my morning swims. I didn’t get to swim this morning, (at my check up last week my surgeon said I could resume this Thursday though 🤗) , but I prepared a ricotta egg white omelette season with a pinch of salt, turmeric, and coriander. So far it’s going down slow and I’m feeling full quickly. I think I’ll probably put half away for tomorrow’s breakfast. Readjusting portions will certainly be a learning curve.
  18. I put on my first pair of jeans 7 weeks post op to go to Home Depot. They were loose! A few steps into the store and my pants were falling off. A few days later did laundry. Pulled out some leggings. I have knee knows, and mtmy thighs don't touch.
  19. My surgery center has a nearly all liquid liver-shrinking diet for 14 days, but it is causing me the worst chapped lips. I've been drinking 82 - 124 oz of water and it's getting worse. Has anyone else experienced ultra dry skin & lips during the pre-op diet? Diet : Water - 48 oz. minimum Breakfast - 30 g protein shake <5 carbs Lunch - 30 g protein shake <5 carbs Dinner - light meal: 3-6 oz lean protein, <30 carbs, non-starchy vegetable, 2 servings of healthy fat spread throughout day non-starchy vegetables are unlimited throughout the day. Does it get easier?

Yes it does get way better & easier. Because we’re different & we heal & recover in our own time, there’s no real definitive time frame when this will happen for you. Your tummy becomes less sensitive & fussy, the sensitivity you may develop for certain tastes & smells goes, you feel more comfortable & confident about what you can eat, you can eat more & a wider variety of foods. And one day you’ll look back & go yep, I’ve come a long way from those first couple of weeks. In the meantime keep eating small bites slowly. Remember too the restricted diet & staged return to eating specific foods is to support & not stress your healing tummy. I wasn’t able or interested in eating much either. I ate from a teaspoon & each bite was barely 1/2 a teaspoon. I wasn’t eating 300 calories those first months & barely ate 900 at 6 months. Started with eating only 1/4 to 1/3 cup from purée. Got to almost a cup at 6 months. You will slowly but surely be able to eat more too. Try some anti nausea meds to help with your nausea. Most are prescribed them initially. Ask for some or try some over the counter ones & see if they help. I had varying degrees of nausea in the morning for 8 months. It stopped when I stopped taking my multi vitamins (didn’t need them) - they’re often the culprit especially iron.

    Does it get easier?

I'm 3 months out. I am finally able to include things like carbs & it brought back A LOT of normalcy for me. I am also able to eat about 3-1/2 to 4 ounces of food which fills up a small bowl & visually it helps me a ton. It took me about 2-1/2 months for me to finally feel like myself again. It will come! It will get easier & having access to your old healthy favorites will bring comfort. I promise!
  22. I feel like I am more conscientious than ever of attaching a moralistic value to weight and making sure I am treating it as a neutral. One thing I worried about alot in the week before my surgery is somehow contributing to the societal bias and negative treatment of overweight people by getting the surgery. I feel like I worry about that more than anything.

    Does it get easier?

I’m struggling with this too. I’m 3 weeks post op and my surgeon seems to much more strict with my meal plan than a lot of others, so the food is getting quite monotonous. Not to mention it’s 4 weeks on the pureed diet for me. As for nausea, my vitamins are the main culprit and my PCP prescribed me Zofran to help mitigate the nausea while I play around with my vitamins to see what works.
  24. Keep trying things, this affects all of us but each body gets relief differently. I watch the timing of the vitamins too. If you take calcium with iron they bind up and cancel each other for example. Drink 64 oz of water, try everything said including probiotics and or prebiotic foods like kombucha, yogurt, sour kraut, kimchi. You will find a sweet spot, it just takes time to work out the new plumbing system. I wouldn’t let it back up more than a week. I use a multi prong approach with probiotics, magnesium supplements, and benefiber each evening, caffeine in the am. It got me back to regular most mornings. Best of luck experimenting! (I was motivated by a very bad blowout at work that I never want to repeat lol.)
  25. I’m about 5 weeks out from surgery and food, while easier than the first two weeks, is still hard. It’s stressful because I’m nauseous all the time. Things I love I can’t have, even if they are healthy. I’m really struggling with if it’s going to be like this forever. I can barely eat more than two bites at a time. I just need to know if this gets better cause I’m really struggling. It’s making me irritable and not fun to be around.
