  1. I share your pain. Lol I'm 5'5 243..... Did my Atkins 2 weeks and lost 10 lbs up to yesterday....I had my lapband yesterday and I'm doing great. This is an awesome forum. Welcome!!!!
  2. Last night while doing the dishes I got chest pain. I tried to brush it off but eventually had to sit down which made it better. Then the pain seemed to move down to my upper middle left side and would only get better when sitting. It eventually stopped but now every time I take a sip I get pain. I've never had this problem before. I'm exactly two weeks out and am afraid something is wrong.

    Weight Gain A Week In?

Congrats on your surgery. Whoo hoo. It always surprises me the different post surgical diets people are given. I wasn’t on puréed foods until week 5. Follow the plan you were given but don’t be surprised if something on the plan upsets your tummy - just avoid it. As Gradycat said take it slowly. And if you feel you’re struggling, never be afraid to go back a step. Potatoes are a starch which provide energy but if you don’t use that energy it will be converted to fat. The same with all carbs. This is why many of us are told to avoid them during our weight loss phase. Plus the fat you add when you mash them isn’t the best. They weren’t on my post surgical diet from either my dietician or my surgeon. I still avoid potatoes at 19.5 months out as they tend to sit in my tummy & consume very few carbs (except for whole or multigrain crackers or rolled oats). My 2.5week pre surgery diet was keto but all the reading I did & conversations with my dietician suggested keto was good as a kick start but because of the high fat not good long term. Don’t worry too much about fluctuations. Fluid retention, constipation, etc. will up the number on the scales. Plus you know sometimes it’s just our bodies. We can eat & drink exactly the same thing one day to the next but can gain or lose. As long as the your general weight loss trend is going down you’re doing well. (Ignore when you have a stall of course.😁) Good luck on your journey.

    Weight Gain A Week In?

Daily weight fluctuations are a pain in the behind and the reason I've been avoiding my scale. My weight fluctuates up when I increase my sodium and also near my monthly so I tend to drive myself crazy. It's the later part that's bothering me right now and when I saw an extra three pounds on my scale I wanted to throw it! You'd think I'd get over it since it happens EVERY month, but no. It still drives me up a wall! 😒

    Weight Gain A Week In?

Nope, you did not gain a pound! It takes 3500 excess calories to gain a pound, and I’m 100% sure you did not eat that much a week after surgery. It’s completely normal for your weight to fluctuate by a couple of pounds. Even over the course of a single day, your weight can fluctuate by more than a pound, depending on the time of day, the timing with respect to eating and going to the bathroom, salt intake (which can make you retain water), etc. A lot of people recommend only weighing yourself once per week so you don’t see those little day-to-day fluctuations. Mashed potatoes are not the best thing to eat because they’re high in carbs and low in protein, but a lot of programs allow them in the puréed stage (you might want to mix in some unflavored protein powder to add some protein). Is a deviled egg really allowed in the puréed stage? At this point, the concern is not about stretching your stomach so much as tearing the sutures that are holding your stomach together. It’s really important to follow your surgeon’s instructions to allow your stomach to heal properly.
  6. I was sleeved in Mexico on July 1st. I lost 18 pounds before surgery and have lost 50 pounds since then. I am feeling discouraged with myself. I know it sounds like lots of weight but I am afraid of this slow down in the last few weeks. Has anyone else had experience with this? I have been tracking my food and going to the gym and I work full time. I am 58 and want this to work. How long will the weight loss continue? I have heard a year or six months. I am confused. Any advice? Anyone going through the same thing or has gone through the same thing?
  7. Hi everyone! I had surgery Jan 9th. I was down 16lbs in the first ten days. Over the last 3 days I've gained 2.4 lbs. No, I'm not freaking out, I get it's normal and I'm just happy I'm still down over ten, but thought I'd post what I'm eating to see if anyone has any suggestions just so I don't continue on this path if I'm clearly doing something wrong. Since I started "thick liquids" the last few days (which is when the scale started creeping up) I had a premier Protein shake for Breakfast and a second for lunch (30 G protein each) and then butternut squash Soup with a bit of plain protein mixed in. Last night I had sugar free pudding with unflavored Protein powder mixed in instead of the soup thinking I should maybe watch my carb intake a bit more since the soup was higher carbs. I don't seem to have any restriction when it comes to drinking the shakes. I basically just sip on them throughout the morning or afternoon (this is usually what I did prior to surgery too). The soup/pudding - don't really have a problem with those either, although I eat slowly and stop when I think I'm about full. I do know I need to increase my Water, only getting about 48 oz a day (and most is with mio mixed in). And I do need to increase my exercise too. I am taking multi Vitamins, Calcium, Iron and b12. Any thought? I'm guessing this is pretty normal, but wanted to check. I have another week of "thick liquids" then I can move on to small "soft" chunks of meat, etc. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks everyone!
  8. I was just banded last week and was told to only sip and not drink too much. Was that just right after surgery? Can I drink normally now? We're at record high temps and no air conditioning and I'm dying. I want to down bottles of ice cold water and am afraid. I'm also nursing my son still and need a LOT of water. What do I do? Right now every time I drink I get terrible gas pains in my shoulder. Help, help, help!
  9. I am 6 weeks and 2 days post op today. I was nervous about getting my 1st fill because I didn't know what to expect. It was not as bad at all. 1st I was injected with same numbing med. That was the worst part. It felt like a pinch. I didn't feel a thing when my surgeon injected the 4cc fill. I was told to take it easy tomorrow with a soft diet then regular after that. I have lost 29 lbs since pre op diet/banded. 9 lbs from the pre op diet and 20 since surgery.
  10. I am a little over 3 months. Breakfast: 2 egg whites with ham n cheese Coffee: it's a must for me Snack: breakstone's 2% milk cottage cheese (10grams of protein) Lunch: meat with veggies Snack: cottage cheese again Hot green tea dinner : meat n veggies Hot green tea I keep my calories @ 800 and under but sometimes I may go over I workout 5 times a week Ps I have found that when I have a little fat in my food, I tend to lose more weight than not having any fat. Best wishes. Ps down 42 lbs and over 25 inches

    First Fill Today

  12. Well, someone suggested it and it sounds like a great idea, so here it is. The check-in site for older bandsters. I'll get this started. I'm 63 and in the process of getting a loan to pay for my surgery if needed (can't cound on Medicare). I've had the Thallium scan. I had 5-way-bypass in 2001 and am doing fine in that department, but the weight has to go. I devoted myself literally to eating when they took my cigarettes away...but then that is what ended me up in surgery to start with. Now, the culprit is almost as bad. The weight has to go to help my heart and my arthritis. I have taken the sleep study and have sleep apnea. I'll be in the hospital for a night next week to see what amount of C-pap I need. I have taken a thallium stress test to make sure the arteries are still open. I'm scheduled for an echocardiogram on Monday (just because my cardiologist is overly careful and hears a slight murmur he thinks is mitral valve prolapse), which is liveable, but he wants to make sure there are no leaks from the bypass surgery. I am going to have all my blood work done on the 17th of Nov. and then I have the psych appt. and the appt. with the surgeon, at which point all the testing will be done, and I'll only have to wait for the surgery and to make sure I have money in hand. OK, now the rest of you older bandsters (who are banded or waiting) please check in and lets give each other lots of encouragement and talk about our experiences. To date I don't have much to share, but am looking forward to hearing from all of you that have been banded and the weight loss you have achieved. Check-in site officially open.

    Should I panick??

The day after being banded i had a stomach bug...what a lovely experience. I called the doctor and after switching to a different anti-nausea med and having that not work she sent me to the er. Long story short i spent three days in the hospital but no damage was done to my band. thank god.

    Skipping Puree Stage

Any changes to your diet phase you should definitely get guidance from your doctor/weight loss team. The phases are there to help your new stomach adjust slowly and to minimize the risk of potential complications. Having difficulties in any diet phase can be stressful to deal with. You're only a couple of weeks out from surgery. I felt lethargic and weak 2 weeks out from my surgery too and that was without having issues with liquids. Your body is still healing and it takes time. Please make sure you speak to your doctor before making any changes to your diet phase!

    Diets

I had my best success with WW, too. I've always said, "If I drank all the water they tell me to, eat all the veggies they tell me to and did all the exercise they tell me to, I'd lose weight. PERIOD." Problem is -- I lose it so incredibly SLOW that I give up and end up just pigging out for a few days or couple of weeks and gain back what I lost. If it doesn't do anything else, at least the band prohibits that sort of falling off the wagon!

    Hi

I was on liquids for the first week, but I was still thirsty. I am drinking a little more often, but now I am on yogurt, shakes, pudding, and tuna! I will let you know if I find a solution to my problem. And good luck to you!

    Bacon!

Hi Susan, while on the subject of bacon - this is what I have learned, and I am delighted by it: We have bacon once a week, generally on the weekends. We go to the local natural food store, and buy the thick cut, organic, no additives, no preservatives bacon. One pound yields only about 8 slices. Me, my wife, and two little ones each eat two pieces of it. This assures I can savor it and not overdo it, since there isn't enough of it to pig out on. What I noticed is that a couple of pieces of bacon coupled with a bowl of oatmeal is totally satisfying, filling, and it stays with me for hours, since the bacon has a lot of protein and fat. And when you look at the calories of this mini-feast, its not really that bad. I have noticed a little weight loss the next day each time I have tried this, and have never gained the next day because of it. So what's wrong with taking a little pleasure, once in a while, in small doses? I think it works. Maybe it helps reset that caloric restriction thermostat! Its hard to believe there was a day that I used to eat a pound of bacon to myself, and want for more. :eyebrows: Glad those days are over. Any other bacon afficionados out there? Best, Brad

    Driving or Exercising?

I was cleared for driving and exercising 3 weeks post op.
  20. Have my 6 week follow up tomorrow and first fill. I've lost 29lbs but feel no restriction so I'm confident they will give me a fill. I'm nervous but excited at the same time! Hope everyone is well!

    anyone experincing this

I couldn't do eggs till about three months either without pain
  22. Today was my six week post op appt. My doc was happy about my progress thus far. I've lost a total of almost 40 lbs since surgery. I was about to leave out when the dietician stopped me and requested a sit down. Basically, she wanted to catch up and make sure I was following the diet plan etc. The part that scared me was the example of play food she showed me of what I should be eating. It was a lot smaller portion wise than what I'm actually consuming. I eat almost double of what she showed me. I limit myself to 800 calories a day which includes 1-2 snacks. The Dr. actually suggested 1200-1400! The NUT told me not to concentrate on calories at all, but to monitor portion size instead and to cut out snacking. I feel like my way has been working pretty well so far and this person just totally kicked my legs from under me!! Do I continue on my merry way or listen to her?
  23. Today makes 6 months that I decided to make one of the best decisions of my life! My starting weight was 303lbs and I'm now 219lbs. I'm feeling a lot better mentally and physically. I'm so motivated that nothing is getting in my way. I go to the gym 3-4 days a week, and still staying under 1200 calories. Here is a couple pictures so you can see my results.

    Two days post op

I was sleeved on 7/27 and felt so full and sick with one bite or sip too. I told the nurse I was getting sick with the one bite of pudding she put my meds in. I guess she didn't believe me. I threw it up even though I tried so hard not too. It seemed like it got worse for a day or so after surgery, but then it started getting better every day. I think the stomach was just really swollen from the trauma it just went through in surgery. 2 days post op I did horribly and barely got anything in, but on 1 week post op, I finally had upped it to getting my full 64 oz of liquid and 60 gr of Protein. Hang in there. It will get better.

    Week 2

Glad to hear you are doing well. I am almost 4 weeks out and going in for a fill (maybe) this week. I am feeling really good too, but not much hunger. It is a great. I need to be walking more, but seem to find lots of excuses not to. I have to get myself on the stick again. Good to hear from you!
