Stalled 4 months out
flesteresq replied to flesteresq's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So it must just be a normal point to stall. Hopefully it'll pass soon. -
Those that are working out at least 5x a week- do you find yourself hungrier more often? Not sure if normal or means I need a fill.

Hi everyone. I had surgery 9/4 and I am doing good. No nausea or vomiting. The gas pains are more or less gone after day 6. I had my 1st followup last Friday and the doctor is allowing me to move up to soft foods. I was on a liquid diet day 1 to 5, the mushies for 2 weeks, then soft food for another 2 (I believe). Starting this Friday, I can eat anything. Has anyone been able to move on to regular foods this fast?

I have been doing Water aerobics 2-3 times a week. And, I was looking for something to do on the days that I don't go to the gym for that glass. Well, Today I was browsing for something to watch on tv.. and found that there's an EXERCISE channel offered for FREE! I checked a few out, and they look awesome! I'm excited. I'm trying to find as many resources I can now before having the surgery so that I never have an excuse NOT to work out! :rolleyes2:

When I started I was a bit over 2 months post op. I started the end of February and had surgery 12/20. I definitely could have started sooner though. (I had a pretty easy recovery). I totally love it now and am doing at least 4 classes a week. Slaked a little bit towards the end of last week due to a cold, but even though I'm still quite congested I'm back to it, and it actually seems to clear my nose up a bit lol. I definitely recommend it!

Thank you for all of your feedback. I think i will go through the next session and get more of a vibe on him and then decide. Jadebrasil.. I live in Los Angeles and belong to 24 hr. Fitness... it is 150 for three sessions. He will write up a plan for me to stick to after those three sessions and give me goals to work towards. It is really a great thing to help push you a little harder than we typically push ourselves.

Yoga is an awesome form of strength training. I work out like crazy like walking, jogging, calistetics, ankle and wrist weight exercises, medicine ball and I just started yoga a few days ago. Let me tell you that the yoga has gotten me the most sore out of all the exercises. I felt every single muscle in my body hurt later that day. It was also too the most relaxing form of exercise. My daughter and I walked 4 miles and then I let her play at the park while I did yoga in the shade. I LOVED IT! I'm planning to do it again today. Go on YouTube and theres several workouts you can stream from your phone. You hold he positions so you're able to pause your phone between moves. ~Leticia **HW: 259**PreOp: 216**SURG: 3/21/13 **Discharged @: 221**9 weeks post op. CW: 182.6 lbs. ---ONE-DERLAND ---

So I am 5 weeks post op RYN, 3 weeks post op bowel obstruction. I am ready to slowly start adding strength training but I'm a rookie... Does anyone have a suggestion where to start? Does yoga count as strength training? I don't have a gym membership and I'm not ready to get one yet.

when did you get cleared for exercise?
Blaze21 replied to audreysmommy's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I was cleared for walking right away. Full exercise @ 2 weeks. Ab exercise @ 6 weeks. Please check with your surgical team for your schedule. -
I don't do any special pre or post work out. I just fuel up a string cheese if I feel a little hungry going to the gym. After workout, I have a protein bar. I wouldn't worry and the special concoctions unless you are hard core working out, or at least until you get your diet situation straighten out. If you feel like crap, stop going to the gym, and take some days off. It won't hurt you. Take a week off. In fact every couple months at a gym, you should eb changing up your routine in a significant way. Maybe take a big break, and trying some jogging and train yourself into a 5k. Make sure you are eating enough carbs and protein. You could feel like crap because you are physically exhausted because you are not eating enough. Now one week past op I lost 31 pounds

Hi, I think that is a bit excessive too. I have been losing weight steadily for the past 2 1/2 months (still very new) as I have been losing I have gained oodles of energy. I workout about 5 times a week now but not for an hour each time. The days when I am really busy I try to do higher intensity exercise and on the weekends I do longer walks. I think you should just try and do as much as you can and you will see that you will soon feel like doing more.

I would wait the 6 weeks. I started riding 2 weeks out and I can tell you the port hurts like heck and remains sore. Let the port heal properly before putting strain on the muscle that the port is attached to. Just my opinion.

I have been walking briskly for about 2 months now. I have got up to 3 miles 3 times a week on a walking path. The other days only around 2 miles on a treadmill plus weight training 3-4 times a week. The past 2 weeks, I have had severe cramping in my calves and my back hurts really bad. I am 54 years old so that may have something to do with it but I feel as if I am missing something in my diet, vitamins or something. I have also stopped losing weight which has not been coming off real well anyway. I have to keep an eye on the calorie intake to be sure I get at least 800 calories a day. I have started a protien shake but the cramping is still there. Any suggestions appreciated.

I've been going to CrossFit 1-3x/week for about 2 months now - usually twice a week. I got passes for 20 classes to 2 different studios through Groupon, I'm nearing the end of my classes with the first studio. I like it a lot, I enjoy intense workouts that are more about short bursts of energy rather than endurance (e.g. running). I think I'll keep it up after my Groupon discount passes are over. It's pretty brutal though, I always go to the Saturday morning class and then I'm basically a vegetable for the rest of the day. Today my boyfriend commented that my arms hang half-bent in front of my body - took me a second to realize I have to forcibly straighten my arms thanks to the 200 ring rows I did earlier this morning.

Last week I came across a thread from bodybuilding .com dated 4//23/2007 that addressed this same issue. A poster on that thread, PeteB claims from a previous article on bodybuilding.com he read "that 10 minutes of moderate cardio will purge about 50% of the accumulated lactic acid, and another ten minutes will purge 25% more." This was apparently suggested with the expectation that light easy cardio for a cool down will be sufficient - nothing aggressive. So....I went back and did not see a link to articles, and the science may have changed in seven years.......but food for thought and further investigation.

Burping/ Water
lifeisjustbeginning2011 replied to amjcal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
holy cow - my personal opinion is that your body is telling you that you're doing too much! At my post op today, I was told no exercise (other than short walks) for a month post op because the stomach is still very swollen. not sure mowing the grass when you're 1 1/2 weeks post op is a good idea, but I'm glad that you're feeling well enough to do so....but be careful, ok? -
Gotta do both! Your cardio sound awesome! Have you thought of running 20, Bowflex 20, run again for 20? Sometimes I split my cardio like that just for something different to do. You have already made the exercise commitment, so I'll bet it will be easy for you to sneak in some weights a few times a week. You will be SO happy you are lifting!!! DO IT!!! DO IT!!!! DO IT!!!!

Obviously to lose weight you must eat less than you need, but hard exercise places extra demands. I always did it so I could eat more and still lose but I have gotten my body into a fairly risky state by not eating enough more. It's probably the reason why each of my half marathons took me two or three months to recover from. I just thought it was coz I was over 40 and marveled at the veterans out there,

Last Monday my husband bought bikes for both of us to ride with my daughter, who already has a bike. We had riden together everyday with the exception of last night. He and my daughter rode our usual route and I told him that I wanted to just ride up and down the street to practice turning and braking...even though I have been riding for a week it has been approximately 20 years since I had riden a bike. I was riding up and down the street and then heard "d**n look at that fata** on the bike" from a group of pre-teens sitting on their own bikes on across street. I was angry, very angry...a few minutes later my husband and daughter came around the corner and he instantly knew something was wrong. That night I told him I did not want to ride again. I know kids, heck even adults say mean even cruel things. They were old even to know better....but I will not let them win. I have dealt with the stares and the whispers for too long. I am trying to make a bether life for me and my family. I will get back on my bike tonight and ride.

Sombra, a topical analgesic you can buy on Amazon works great and doesn't stink forever like Ben Gay. Stretching is also very important. Gonna look up the foam roller info for myself too. pre-surgery weight 325; surgery date 2/28/2013; surgery weight 307; 8 weeks past-op weight 281.4; 12 weeks post-op 274; 4 month post-op 266.2; 5 month post-op 262.6; 6 month post-op 253.2

Like the rest of your body the biggest visual change will come from simple fat reduction. Many women first notice upper body definition as a result of weight loss, its the first place it becomes obvious. So good eating and loads of cardio to shift the fat are your first line of defence. Light dumbell toning exercises (high reps, lowish weight) will tone and maintain lean muscle. However, if you have significant loose skin (bat wings) then actually building some muscle will help to fill it out - only marginally though, women dont tend to gain lots of muscle no matter what they do. But if building muscle is what you want then you need to change the focus to heavy weight and low reps. Stuff like drawing up a chair, or backing up to a waist high rail (like a fence) putting your feet out in front of you and doing dips. Go RIGHT DOWN into the dip and have your legs as far away from you as you can handle, so that you work the muscle to failure within a couple of reps. You can adjust difficulty by making it easy (knees bent, feet right in front of you, legs taking weight) to super difficult) legs straight out in front of you, unbent knees, all weight taken through the arms. Work the muscle to the point where it fails a couple of times a week - if you can do 12 reps, its time to make it harder. Do the same with push ups to attack the arms from different angles. And arms always look nice with a little bit of shoulder definition which you can achieve with side lateral dumbell raises, heavy heavy dumbells, so you can only do a few reps. It depends what your goal is and how you want to look. But some loose skin unfortunately is a result of weight loss and only surgery can remove it.

Well insurance let me down. I wasted 6 weeks but when I called the doctor's office they have had a cancellation this Friday, June 9th and I'm taking it! Yippee! I am so excited and scared at the same time. I can't think of anything else. David is being a poop about it........... it's all about the money, not my health or happiness. I won't let it get me down. I'm doing this for me and me alone. I have to be there at 8 a.m. and it should be finished and out of there by noon. Wow! It's really going to happen. I have wished for this for years and now that it's here, I can't believe it.
