  1. Hi All , was on the liquid diet for 2 and a half weeks pre surgery and now I'm one month post surgery so I decided to "eat " something to see if I got that full feeling or near full feeling .I had some cottage cheese and was still starving , so I ate some tuna -mashed down .Nope - I didn't feel full or near full ,I could have eaten the whole can .Anyone else felt like this ?

I'm so proud of everyone who has already gone through the surgery! Yall are all an inspiration that I can make it through this 2 weeks of liquid diet. Officially started today!!

    August surgery buddies!

I lost my first week and then it just stopped at week 2. I am not at almost a month and am finally losing again. Everyone stalls. And a lot of people stall in the first month while your body is adjusting, try upping your calories a little to kick it. Best advice, DO NOT WEIGH YOURSELF DAILY. You will torture yourself with the up and down. I am doing once a week right now, and might switch to once a month.

    Abdominal Binder

My surgeon does not use them but I did choose to wear a compression tank top (sort of like shapewear) for the first week or so post-op. Nothing super tight, just enough to help me feel comfy.

    August 24!

Three weeks today! Still dealing with the abdomen drain hole not fully closed, left arm numbness and swelling. The swelling is on my forearm so I kind of look like popeye especially since my upper arm is smaller now. Speaking of swelling, still super swollen especially as the day goes on. I knew this happened post op but I don’t think I really understood how much swelling was happening or how uncomfortable it was. Also hard to see real results when you’re puffed up like a water balloon. Not having pants fit was kind of alarming for me- I know it’s probably just the swelling but I can’t help but be worried that I’m bigger now.

    Finally

Five weeks after surgery today, and after more than a two week stall, I finally started losing weight again this week. Today, for the first time in more than a decade, I weighed less than 100 kilos (220 pounds). I'm 99.5 kilos or 219 pounds. I know it's just a number on a scale, but it made me so happy. I've lost 13.5 kilos (28.6 pounds) pre and post surgery, and I've already completed more than 1/3 of my final goal. What, if anything, have you done to celebrate a mini goal or the end of a stall? I feel like doing something, but I don't know what. In the past I would probably have bought myself something good to eat, but that's not an option anymore.
  7. I'm five weeks past surgery and the pain was a lot less than I expected. I did get some strong pain meds in the hospital, but when I came home I only had normal pain meds and I stopped using them after a few days. I did have some problems with gas and nausea, but in all I was surprisingly well the day after surgery and I did go to work a couple of days before two weeks had passed. Before this surgery, I've had a c-section, shoulder surgery and surgery for fibroids. Of the four, this one was the least painful. If you follow what the doctors tell you and take pain medication, you should be fine.

How painful is gastric sleeve post-op?

I think you’ll find there is no standard. Here’s my experience. When I woke up in recovery - very groggy… they asked how I was feeling. I told them I was having a lot of pain but I thought it was gas pressure. They asked me where I said chest and left shoulder so they did a cardiac work up… I assured them I was pretty sure it was gas but they said “better safe”. I can recall the conversation barely - but I’ll be honest, I have no physical memory of the pain. Once I was in my room, my right side, where they removed my stomach from was the only sore spot (I also had a hernia repair). I woke up with a binder on and that (I found after I took it off) helped a lot. I came home with Gabbipenten & nausea meds and Tylenol. I’m 4 weeks now with NO abdominal or incision pain, but the first few weeks I was sore, tender and moving slowly. I used a lot of ice and heat and my binder… to help while healing and to be comfortable. I had some inflammation and irritation with my main incision that made some mild discomfort, but once that was managed really it was much less than I thought it would be and even at the worst of it, it was manageable and less than I feared.

    August surgery buddies!

I had a stall for more than two weeks after I started on solid foods. It was really frustrating, but recently I started losing a little weight again. All you can do is be patient. In the first days and weeks after surgery, you are losing a lot of water weight. Then your body starts adding the water weight again, but you're still losing fat. You just don't see it on the scale for a while, since the re-added water makes up for the fat loss on the scale. Just stick to your program. Eventually you will start losing weight on the scale again.

That's where the bone broth comes in. Plus, I have some unflavored protein powder that I can add to regular broth or even water if needed. I just have not used it yet since I didn't have the need. Also, I'm only on liquid protein for days 4-7, then I can add in cottage cheese & ricotta cheese. At that point, the old standby Ricotta Cheese Bake may be my friend for week 2.

Nice to meet you! I felt surprisingly mild/good after surgery! I was in quite a bit of pain when I went home - especially that leftmost incision. 😱 I'm a week out from surgery tomorrow and I'm feeling a lot better. 😊 I think I made the right decision to have rny bariatric surgery!
  12. Prior to surgery I was not addicted to any drugs or alcohol. However, I would comfortably assume I was “addicted” to food. Now that I’m not eating anywhere close to as much as I used to, I fear I am seeking to fill that void with an odd replacement…professional sports. I am an avid baseball fan and my team has a really good chance at making the playoffs this year. When they win, I’m in a great mood, nothing could be better. However, when they lose, I go into a tailspin and get very depressed, instantly having little to no interest in doing anything or finding joy in anything. I am speaking with a psychiatrist in a week, so hopefully that will help begin the coping process. Has anyone else had a personal experience with transfer addiction, and if so, how did you/are you dealing with it?

    July 2022 peeps!

Hi all! Looks like you're all doing fairly well! I had my 8 week post op yesterday and I am down 46 lbs (from 259 to 213) and 8 BMI (44 to 36)! I've slept the last few nights without my CPAP, too! I feel absolutely great and regret nothing. Now that I am on a general diet I've had to remind myself to eat slower. A couple of times I ate too fast so the food was stuck, causing me to vomit it back up. I'd like to say that I've learned my lesson, but some habits are hard to break. Non-scale victories: Weaning off CPAP I can cross my legs (lol) I fit in the non-plus size section (woo-hoo!) Much more energy Sent from my SM-S908U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    **Weight REGAIN**

Thank you all for the kind words, encouraging words, and hard to hear words. I will keep this updated as time goes on, I am putting myself on clear liquids tomorrow then doing another week long reset with the shakes again to hopefully get myself back on track once more. I know that the shakes is not a long term solution, but it’ll help me regain focus again and hopefully get myself in a better mind set to be more conscious about what I put into my mouth. Going to be searching for a new therapist soon. Will keep updated when I can. Thanks to you all again!
  15. I probably eat about half as much as I did pre-surgery. I could do a small turkey wrap (or half a large one) and maybe a side dish for sure. raw carrots can be hard on my stomach. In fact, I sometimes eat some of them when I'm at risk of binging on something. They tend to irritate my stomach, so it stops a binge in its tracks (usually....). Long way of saying - raw vegetables like that can still irritate our stomachs even after being years out - so that's not uncommon... I tend to go more by calories now, since I still count them. Pre-surgery, I was probably eating 3000+. Now I eat somewhere between 1600-2000, depending on how much exercising i'm doing. On holidays I've been known to eat more than that - 2300 or so - but eating that much makes me feel like i just ate an elephant, and I feel like crap that day and the next. 2300 would have been nothing when I weighed over 300 lbs. P.S. yes - I sometimes do feel restriction - but not like I did the first few weeks & months after surgery.

    Food

the no weight loss since last week is almost certainly a stall. They're completely normal. They usually last 1-3 weeks, and you're likely to hit several of them on your weight loss journey. Just stick to your program and stay off the scale for a few days. They'll eventually break and you'll be on your way again. the nausea part - I'd let your clinic know that...if nothing else, for peace of mind.

    August surgery buddies!

I am about 6 weeks post op, I just started eating solid food a week ago, I can only eat 2 to 3 bites before I feel like I am going to throw up. Since introducing food I have not lost any weight. Anyone experiencing the same? Any advice how to stop the Plato?

    Food

I am about 6 weeks post op, and am feeling really frustrated. I can only eat about 2 or 3 bites of anything before I feel like I am going to throw up. I just introduced real food about a week ago and since then have lost no weight. Anyone experience this also.

    September surgery buddies!!

Hi Sept Surgery Buddies! I just wanted to report an astounding success that all of you would understand. I go in for surgery day after tomorrow so I am neck deep in my liquid diet. I only had to do it for a week and messed up the first two days. But I got myself totally focused and have done well since and was feeling great yesterday after not even feeling hungry. Today we had company lunch out at a restaurant that I couldn't avoid. I'm talking bar and grill with ALL the food, starting with many apps across the table. Everyone ordered food, I ordered a refill on my water. It was tricky because I haven't told anyone about my surgery. Just said I wasn't hungry. And it was true! I wasn't!! Whoda thunk it?!? Felt good to have my head in the right spot and still enjoy the company of my co-workers in the face of such temptation. Going in at 11am on Sept. 15! Will report back on my experience - thanks so much to those of you that continue to do so. It is incredibly helpful!

I went into this with pretty unrealistic pain expectations. It hurts! And I have been more asleep than awake the last two days. Nausea is no joke either. Make sure you get some nausea medicine and stay on top of that and pain meds. I can’t imagine taking less than a week to recover at this point.

Definitely take at least a week! I get wanting to go back to work, but you gotta try to heal properly.

    September surgery buddies!!

So glad to hear that it gets better! I, too, tried the badass route and it didn’t go so well. I ran out of my pain med supply yesterday, had a rough night then tried to go to work (office job) today. WRONG. I called my surgeon for another round of meds and I’m back home now after a half day at work. By lunchtime, I was hunched over trying not to stress my incisions and praying I could make it to the car without screaming. I’m going to stay down a couple of more days. I definitely think a full week of rest is needed! My surgery was 9/9 so I’ll try to go back to work 9/15 or 16 - maybe.

Congratulations on a successful surgery! I'm about a week post now and the last time I took my pain med was Saturday night and even then it was a just in case thing . The pain gets more tolerable!!!
