Reactive Hypoglycemia or Dumping Syndrome?
leese1313 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
So I have what I think is Dumping Syndrome or Reactive Hypoglycemia and it is seems like it is caused by 2 things. Taking a shower and exercise. For some reason after I take a shower at night my sugar crashes so bad I have to take glucose tablets to bring it back up. I don't take hot showers (I hate being hot), just warm and it doesn't happen all the time but often enough that I found a pattern and it doesn't happen when I take a shower in the morning only at night. It also happens after I exercise. I eat dinner at 5:00 p.m. I wait at least an hour, hour and 1/2 and I am not a gym rate that I am doing it for hours - 30 minute treadmill, 10 minute rowing machine (I had a total knee replacement so I do this for my knee at a slow pace to get the bend in) and 3 sets of arm exercises with free weights. Literally there are times I have to stop while I am exercising because I can feel my sugar going down. There have been times it has crashed as low as the 50s. I have talked to the doctor about this and the physician's assistant said have protein before you exercise. Well I am having dinner before I do, which is always a protein vegetable and a small amount of carbs. Has anyone else had this issue? I want to exercise but I am afraid every time I do that this will happen and it happens more often than not. I have taken to as soon as I am done exercising to just automatically taking 2 glucose tablets which is adding extra sugar in but in order to have it not crash on me. Thanks in advance for any responses! -
Extreme conspitation during LRD

I had a very similar experience about a week to 10 days post sleeve surgery! It was awful, never had anything like it previously in my life! I had some San Pellegrino laxative very effective, it took a few hours, but worked very well! Sweet relief!! -
Hello everyone! Question on weight stall. I had my surgery in May of 2024. I have not lost weight quickly but steadily and I am down 63 lbs. I have seem to stall for months 9 and 10 and then all of a sudden I lost .80 lbs in the last week. Has anyone gotten to month 8-10 and stalled and then started losing weight again? I have another 30 to go and I am hoping this is not where my body is comfortable. Also I have lost significant weight all across my body but still have a belly and abdomen. Of course it is smaller than it was but it just seem anything has budged from there for the longest time. I do have lymphodema in my from breast cancer so I am hoping it is not a solidifying of any lymphatic fluid (I have the massage machine and do manual massages). So I am hope it is just being stubborn. Thank you for any comments and personal stories with your journey you have regarding this.

Almost the end of the week...let's check-in!

I'm doing okay, lost another 10 pounds and still waiting for my surgery day to come. One more nutrition consult. Today is my birthday and went out to a restaurant for lunch with my husband. I had Lamb, it was s o good, and enjoyed them so very much, good source of protein. Otherwise I'm just hanging out, doing as many support groups as possible, and I am learning to love me for who I am. I look forward to the saggy baggy skin, and the removal thereof. Tomorrow, heading out to the pool for a couple of hours of a workout, and hopefully work off some of that lamb I had today. LOL -
Hi. I’m 5 ft 6 and started at 13 stone 12. I had a mini gastric bypass 10 days ago. I followed the instructions. I’m walking for exercise. My weight is literally the same every time I weigh myself. Whether it’s morning, afternoon, night. Whether I have used the toilet or not. But my scales are manual so it’s not like it’s a fault on a digital scales. Before my operation it was normal for my weight to vary from morning to night etc. I’ve weighed myself since I came home 6 days ago a few times a day just to see if it changes & it doesn’t. I’m so frustrated. Did this happen to anyone else ?

I agree with @DaisyChainOz. There's probably a lot going into his feelings and communication is really important. As a man, I do also understand that some men (me included), just are not good at talking about our feelings. It's partly that we've been conditioned over a lifetime that feelings make us weak and thus we are "lesser" because of it. Also, we've just never learned how to express our feelings, nor to really understand them at all. It's not that we don't have feelings, we just don't really understand them in a way that can be expressed. I tell you all this so you can be patient with your husband. It may take some time for him to share what he's really feeling. The best thing to do is just be supportive and make sure he understands it's okay to share what he's thinking instead of what he's feeling. "Feeling" can be a trigger word for some men. One thing that may (or may not), help the discussion is understanding the risks involved. Again. I don't know what's going on in his head, but if he is fearful of change, or the risks of you having surgery, it's important to help him understand that by far, the riskier thing is NOT having the surgery. I don't know your age or current weight, but I'm assuming you are pretty heavy and likely older just based on the need for a hip replacement and the fact that your orthopedic surgeon won't do the surgery at your current weight. If you are in what's termed "Class III obesity" (in other words, you have a BMI over 40), that alone shortens your life expectancy by 10 to 14 YEARS. I think it's important for both of you to understand this. If he truly loves you, then he should want you to stick around longer.

What Are Some Things That Surprised You After Surgery?
Lilia_90 replied to Beks18's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Another thing that really surprises me post surgery is how quickly my weight drops if I don't eat well and frequently (every 1-2 hours). I have been eating less the past 6 days and already dropped 2.5 kgs (I was at a BMI 19 to begin with, I already felt too thin, now I feel like I'm skin on bones). This would've never been the case prior to surgery. Never thought losing too much weight, or stopping the weight loss would have ever been things I had to battle, but hey, I'd rather this than the other way around! -
Just wanted to say hello. Stumbled upon this fourn as i was looking for a new protien powder. So here is the low down about my journey so far. I Had gastric bypass on 10/15/24. My heaviest weight was 477 lbs that was in April of 24 the day i walked in to the weight loss center. My day of surgery weight was 457 lbs, as I approach my 5 month mark today's weigh in was 346 lbs that's 111 lbs in 5 months and 131 lbs since april...every day i feel better and my mobility improves. This is the best decision I have ever made!

I know I am probably far off from having any form of skin removal, as I have been advised that my weight needs to be stable for at least 6 months before I can look into that kind of surgery, and where I am almost 10 months post-op, I don't think that'll be happening anytime soon! Regardless, I feel the need to start thinking about it now. I am 29 this year, I have PCOS and was previously told I needed to have a baby before I was 27 otherwise my chances of conceiving were very low. I am not in a position (financially or emotionally) where I want children right now, nor in a relationship where I want to have them either. I may want children in my future, but that could be years and years away and I don't know if my biological clock will be long gone by then. I have always liked the idea of adopting too. My question is: what were people's thoughts around pregnancy and plastics? How did you tackle it if this were an issue for you? My current focus is my health and my weight loss, and subsequently my full journey through plastics, not a child...but I know in a consultation I will be asked about this.

I had a post op appt with my NP yesterday. She is please with my nutrition even though it’s not quite status quo. I am still doing chemo with steroids so I have some pretty intense cravings but for now the chemo has made me hyperthyroid so I am maintaining despite a lot less exercise and a less than perfect bariatric diet. Sounds like a blessing to be able to eat more but I’m still having to rein it in because I am ravenous 24/7 and of course there are some real health risks with hyperthyroidism so I have to closely monitor things. I am really hoping it goes away or I’m going to go broke trying to afford healthy food in the quantity I am able to consume. I have mostly nutritious food but I’m not counting calories or quantity for now. Plus with the tiny stomach I eat like 10 times a day so it’s pretty time consuming. On a better note I had a PET Scan the other day and my treatment is working!! A couple more months until the chemo should be done as long as I stay healthy enough to keep getting it. I hope a couple of months later things will be back and I will have a normal amount of cravings that I should be able to handle. I’m gonna need some emotional support kicking the carbs though for sure. -
Does your stomach make noises after you eat? LOL!
meraynareyes replied to Selina333's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ugh yep my stomach is always making really loud noises about 5-10 minutes after I eat. Usually when I am around people they will look at me and I have to warn them beforehand because it catches them off guard 😂 -

I did it! Made it to Onederland
Arabesque replied to Selina333's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Congratulations on achieving onderland! Yay! What weight to stop losing at & how to pick a goal weight are interesting questions and you’ll get different responses. I believe it comes down to where your new set point is (the weight your body is happy at & will keep pulling you back to). It’s the weight where you’re not losing anymore and you have reached a sustainable balance of the number of calories you consume and the activity you do. It’s the weight where you’re happy with how you look & feel too. I had a goal (same as yours) which was the low weight I always dropped to before regaining back up from. I exceeded that. I kept losing until my calorie intake which I was increasing and activity level was in balance. I eat in a way that is sustainable & I don’t feel like I’m missing out or if I’m on a continuous diet or that I have to exercise first hours a day. Some reach a weight but found it wasn’t sustainable or they didn’t feel comfortable at so they gain a little. Remember your new set point may not be where you would like it to be. Also your lowest weight may not be where you end up either. Bounce back (a regain of 10 - 20lbs) is always a possibility & can be due to your body resettling, you realising you need more flexibility in the what you eat & the activity you do to find a better life balance, some conplacency, your new set point, etc. Be flexible in your goal. If you don’t reach it, that’s okay. You’ll be in a better healthier place regardless of the number in the scale. Reach a sustainable balance (food intake & activity) in your life that allows you to live & enjoy your life & doesn’t restrict or limit you. All the best. -
Yeah I have to do a B12 injection every two months also, forgot about that as I have had to do that for more than 10 years now.

Now! I forgot to tell you about the former outfit in the post above. So the girls decided to wear sparkly and skanky outfits last minute lol, and I had nothing that fit the category nor me - no pun intended - . Also, it was too late to attempt to go shopping, so guess what your gal did? I raided my 9 year old's closet, and picked these two pieces, the top is a children's size 10, and the skirt is Zara children's size 11-12, which was sewn from the sides to fit my daughter's waist (she was 6 when she wore this last) and you know how Zara's sizes run way smaller. So those are tiny wins for me (again no pun intended) - not sure my husband agrees since he thinks I'm trying to be tiny on purpose, which my exercise regimen kinda confirms - .

A Change is Coming...
KimBaxleyWilson replied to KimBaxleyWilson's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm wiped out! This morning I went with my husband to get him settled in for his neck lift. I drank about 10 ozs of water while waiting. After he got to recovery i came to the apartment and drank some tomato soup and protein shake. They are concerned that I haven't pooped but I'm thinking there's nothing in there. The nutritionist told me to drink papaya puree with water. The doctor told me to do laxatives if that doesn't work. Our coordinator came and we went to the central market to get souvenirs and papaya juice. I've been sipping it and it has no sugar so it's very much just fiber and water. 😆 Will report back on the results. 🤣 🤣 🤣 -
Wisdom from a 10-year VSG Veteran
Selina333 replied to JamieLogical's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Congrats on 10 years! I think we all will have ups and downs our whole lives! Just life! I too was 277 at my highest ever. Lost 100 lbs before and 60 lbs three times, and 20 and 30 lbs several times and it always came back slowly over the next few years. So I got the sleeve done Dec 2 last year and have gone from 244 at start of liquids before surgery to 202.4 today. Almost to Onederland! I love all the tips you shared. Snacking and drinking calories are DEFINITELY culprits to regaining our weight! I bring divided out grapefruit every day lately if I do want something. Or berries or cucumbers. And I've been drinking water during the week and add in my tea and coffee on the weekends usually. But I use Stevia. I was divorced a few years back also and remarried and my husband is pre-diabetic. He doesn't eat sugar now so that helps me too. 🙂 He eats healthier than I do since he found that out too. Determined to not become diabetic. He eats baked fish, grilled shrimp, spinach and cabbage, etc. LOL! He's got some great willpower. You and I seem to have lots in common! But I don't like beer. LOL! It's probably better for me though than pina coladas, which are my fave! LOL! I haven't had one in a year or longer. And just had surgery about 3 months ago. You can tell I hardly drink at all. 🤣 I am so glad to know restriction stays! Some people say it fades. I'm glad it doesn't! Hopefully we can continue to lose and get to a weight we are happy with this year! 💗 -
Yes the Baleaf brand does have a bit of compression without cutting in at the waist or ankles. Its quite a bit more compared to the lululemon ones which I also own a couple pair of them now because they are buttery soft and soooooo comfy( (as close as you can get to feeling naked while wearing clothing). Personally, I wouldn’t leave the house in them though because they don’t hide nearly enough of my “secrets.” 😂 I feel like the reason that the Lululemon are so popular amongst the younger generation is because they are generally still toned and they look fine on them. My kudos to those that have lost all their weight and toned enough to wear the lululemon though they are really nice and I heard the same thing about their durability so if I could get away with them I for sure would. I can’t speak to the durability myself because I have not owned the lululemons for long. I’m guessing for a much higher price point there are nicer ones out there But for $30 bucks, i have been quite pleased with the Baleaf. Ooh and they are like $10 off near the holidays. I stocked up just before Christmas in the smaller sizes that I knew I would be needing.

Just checking in to see how everyone else is doing. I had a rough few weeks after I got a virus. Just because of the chemo my body couldn’t fight it so I ended up septic and in the hospital for 10 days with pneumonia and a sinus infection. My white blood cells kept bottoming out but they gave me this shot two times to build them back and so far this time they are holding at low normal. Tomorrow will be a week that I’ve been home and I think I am out of the woods finally, but I am still pretty weak and I am supposed to do treatment Monday so I doubt I will get to feeling much stronger. Probably won’t feel like myself until I’m done with the chemo. 10 more weeks 🤞 I am trying to do a tiny bit of waking like a quarter of a mile at a time a few times a day just so I don’t get out of the habit of exercise but that’s about all I can do. I also contacted the cancer center that one of my doctors is a part of and talked to the yoga instructor and asked if they have a virtual option for the chair yoga and when I explained my situation she said she would get with IT and make it happen for next week. I thought that was so sweet and hopefully will be something I can do to start building my strength back. She said next month they are going to add mat yoga as well so I can build back up to that when I am ready. Anyways I’m pretty proud of myself that I’m still trying every step of the way to keep up with my bariatric journey. I may not be 100% right now but unlike pre surgery I am not letting this be an excuse to just throw it all away. I had a birthday and it was a little unconventional because it had to be virtual but it turned out to be a nice day considering. My mom dropped off carrot cake so of course I have that taunting me In the kitchen. I have been doing real tiny pieces though and it’s actually starting to taste a little stale. Who knew that cake can get stale 😂 -
Are You Happy That You Had Surgery?

I have similar experience. I had the sleeve in 2019. Last 5 years have been memorable with a ton of gerd and pain. Tomorrow I’m having the Rouen y bypass and looking forward to it. I’ve been struggling with massive daily cramping for years and lots of dumping. I was 339 6’1 before sleeve. I was 190 until this year when I gained 10 pounds back. I’m doing the bypass because of severe gerd and want my life back. I’ve been on cannabis gummy’s and opioids for the past 5 years and it’s been miserable. I’m hoping it goes well and I can get back to a normal life. I also started liquid diet again and Italian no sugar added frozen ice and Campbells chicken noodle broth only have been my two go tos which I hope my new bypass stomach will tolerate and quality of life will improve and I can stop the cannabis and stop using opioids. Using both for pain mgmt is a blessing and a curse but I’m ready to get off of both become “normal “ I haven’t been able to eat anything less than 2 bites causes pain at a level 10 like I have a kidney stone in my stomach and I’ve had kidney stones before.
