Post op regrets topics - not popular

Umm, not actually. I agree there is not point on dwelling on the past one must move forward. I just wanted to make sure that you were plans to move forward and it seems like you have which is a good thing. This may not seem encouraging, but the opportunity for things to get better is ahead of you. Thank you! My plan is to keep fighting to get back to where I was Healthwise pre op in the first instance. Obviously now, I will have to manage the C Diff issue and it's complications. It is a tough infection to cure. The percentages on reoccurrence are quite worrying. Once all that is under control. I need to concentrate on slowing down the weightloss. I am still losing between 5 and 7 lbs a week and only getting in between 300 and 400 calories a day. I need to get my Vitamins, minerals, Iron and nutrient levels sorted out. Once all that is completed, and this could take months to achieve, I then need to get back to my pre op routine. Seeing family, friends, neighbours, attending church etc. It is heartbreaking to be isolated from your family due to illness. Now I have to worry about who I infect with C Diff. On visits, I need to be conscious about using people's loos etc. Beyond that, I plan to develop a good relationship with a GP that has enough knowledge to help me get back to health and to get away from the bariatric system. I may have to pay privately for this care. As I keep saying, I don't live in regret. I live in a fight for my life. I believe that I have had C Diff for nearly eight weeks now and the inflammation, blood and mucous presenting, makes me fear that this situation may become even more serious due to the neglect of the bariatric team in post op care. My GP believes the bariatric team should be dealing with me and the bariatric team wants the GP to do it. Meanwhile, I am in trouble. I live my life deep in my Faith. And because I do, I am told that there is a plan for my life. That plan appears to be perseverance with grace. Ultimately, I plan to consult an NHS healthcare advocate. I am going to ask that my case be looked over to ensure that I get better care and other people don't have to go through all of this. If your query concerns my dislike of my sleeve, I accepted the ultimate responsibility for my mistake weeks ago. We all make mistakes. I made the decision in error. There is no point in dwelling on this as it is irreversible. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

My initial weight nearly three years ago was the BMI they registered. When I queried the weight loss, I was told that "I had surplus". I went weeks with no nutrition at all. They did give me saline with glucose once while in hospital. They only weighed me in once! Lol And whenever I go in, no one mentions weightloss. The guy with the tracheotomy is much worse off. First Time Out Drinking

Just read the angry outbursts at lipstick lady. no offense, but you did ask for an opinion in your query. We're all entitled to them, so here' come my thoughts again...What struck me is why you needed to drink that amount period to go out and have fun. It's kind of sad that how much "one" drinks is how "one" measures how much fun "one" is having. One of your ressponders asked why wouldn't "one" drink a bottle of wine 7 weeks. post op. Ok, but really I ask back, why would one? This is your journey of courde, and I rhink older pre-ops want us to avoid aligators on our road to recovery. In my ever to be humble opinion, your gearing up for a few bites along the way. no-one is saying drinking is bad. For most of the world, it's not. Oh phooey, just take good care and God bless ya!
  5. @@VSGAnn2014 Your initial comments were fine. The Oak Park OP said she's "depressed," and since that depression, is drinking more beer, ingesting more calories in beer than in food. Liking beer doesn't make one an alcoholic; regularly/frequently turning to it in depression, etc., warrants contemplation. To consider AA...legitimate query, if one is truly open to exploring all reasons and all possible remedies for the weight gain. [Ann, hope you're hubby is progressing well.]

This thread is costing me a fortune in loo paper (for blowing said snot out when laughter has stopped!). Use your sleeve... Or someone else's sleeve... Not the sleeve that removed your gizzards... If the dogs REALLY wanted to go for a walk, they'd get their hairy arses out of bed and walk... I have to drag my hairy arse out of bed each morning and fend for myself, why should't they?? Do you think that if this weather continues my staples and my hip replacement might suffer from rust damage. If this is the case what is your suggested course of treatment? I think I can solve your rusty staples problem... I have another vict patient who happens to be 'pooping staples' at the moment... 10. I bought Bariatric Advantage from my dr and used it in my two- week pre/ op dirt ( added fruit as I didn't care for the vanilla or strawberry taste of the shake Then post op I couldn't drink with fruit and it was torture to choke it down. My taste buds had changed and it was now way too sweet . I tried muscle milk lactose free and that was also too sweet. I ended up with Bi pro .... Simple ingredients and no added sweetness .... I have a serious question... I know, right?!?!

Thank you all for your input.. I said last night that I'd reply to each of you so here goes... @@Christinamo7 I'm aiming for a higher Protein than the 'bare minimum'. I've been a regular gym-goer but have been a little lax recently... (It seems I've been distracted..) When I'm doing weights, I do tend to consume more protein. Again, I've not been tracking until the past two days and I'm ok with my protein intake and my fats. I've not been certain about carbs so have been taking it easy. But from what I've seen in the thread, I may be underdoing the carbs. Thank you very much for your input @@DaisyAmy I intend doing myself up a new training regimen this weekend. I'm going to add some HIIT to three of my cardio sessions as well as starting some more strict weights. Good luck with breaking your stall.. Keep us posted!! @@FrankiesGirl You make a good observation re the 'cheat meal'. That was something I partook in during a past weight loss experiment and it did seem to work. Once I've got used to tracking, I think I'll add a Sunday night cheat meal and see if that helps. You say you try to keep your carbs under 100g daily - I've noticed that I'm sitting at around 40g per day. I've no real idea about such things so if 100g is closer to the mark, I'm definitely short on carbs. I also note that, when I add my exercise (not that I've done it but I'm just checking), my 'net calories' appears to be waaaay to low. I'm thinking I may try the high cal/low cal on alternating days, depending on exercise levels and intensity. Thank you for taking the time to reply... @@fernandfj Again, I note that you're around 100g of carbs per day. As I stated earlier, my carb intake is MUCH lower than that, so it looks like I'll need to up them somewhat. Like you, I have three meals and two Snacks. I also add a 'recovery' Protein shake after my morning gym session in an effort to alleviate the DOMS etc. Thanx for your input mate... Much appreciated! @@Bufflehead I'm trying 1500 cal a day now. Doing the tracking of course, just to see where i'm at. Hopefully the mindfulness re consumption plus a change in exercise will kick-start things.. Thank you so much for replying. Your assistance is appreciated.. @@gary5862 Yep, the exercise will be changing. I've been 'lifting' to some degree, but not recording weights and reps etc... I'll be doing up a new program on the weekend and will refer back to your post when I'm setting my reps/sets.. Thanx for your input mate... And for doing the math for the 'dumb Americans'... @@LipstickLady At least you said those things needed to be 'tracked' and not 'recorded'. I can only imagine what sort of recordings you'd be after!! I don't mind either the 5:2 or the 18:6 theories. I'd forgotten about both of them. As I'm still yet to feel hungry, either of them will be relatively easy for me to have a crack at. I'm not sure that I want your friends analyzing me. Actually, I had a friend of mine ask me to be a 'case study' for her Psychology assignment. That lasted exactly one 'session'. I was no use to her because it seems I broke all the psychological 'rules' that she was trying to prove... But I digress... I've no fear of the dark side. Feel free to tell me more... Thank you for taking the time to reply.. @@Inner Surfer Girl Yep, I'm new to the whole tracking thing. I didn't feel the need for it until now. I was one of the 'lucky' ones who had been around the weight loss thing for a few years so had some level of knowledge. My protein target varies depending on exercise/weights. I aim for at least 100 if I'm not lifting and for 140+ if I am. As far as fats go, I'm getting most of mine from fish. Salmon in particular. Fresh and smoked. I have smoked for lunch and fresh for dinner. Now, I don't like fish - but it's the best way to get what I need protein- and fats-wise. In the carb department, I MOSTLY stay away from the crappy carbs... But I'm also a weak, weak man... And I really miss Pasta... Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... Gnocchi... Thanx so much for your input. Your advice is ALWAYS welcome. @@Wolfgirl78 I've put all my details into the MFP app. I'm just tweaking the protein/carb/fats balance, hoping to get it right. I did notice that what it wanted me to eat was pretty high. 2400cal if I remember correctly. I guess if the 1500 cals experiment I can always up them to somewhere closer to the recommended level. Like a lot of people here, I'm doing protein first and everything else after that. Thanks for sharing your advice.. @@Tommy Joe As stated earlier in this post, I do remember having the 'cheat meal/day' in a prior attempt at losing. I know it didn't harm the losing so it's definitely worth another shot. Good luck with your WLS mate. Keep us posted with your progress.. And thanks you for your kind words. I've not taken the time to 'celebrate' my losses yet, but I'm a lot closer than I was 12 months ago. Cheers mate... @@mistybell Thank you!!! Any input is helpful. Again, I seem to be underachieving in the carbs department. I've been staying under 40g per day, yet everyone seems to be up around 80-100g a day. Definitely something I'll be looking at. Thanks for your reply... @@jintycb Yeah, I'm getting there!! Thanx for your kind words... Apart from the 'mankini' references. The advice one can get here is invaluable. I know I can ALWAYS post a query and get a variety of responses. I'm definitely looking into the caloric increase to kick things off again. And yeah, you know when the stall passes - it'll be alllll over these boards!!! Thank you... @@Dub Oh yeah - we looooove the stalls!! I do my protein powders each day. They're low/no carbs. I'm up over 100g each day, with 140+ if I'm doing the weights. And I'm hearing you re the 'crunch'... That's the sh*t that I crave... I just chew ice... It doesn't really help - but it's a good story to tell... Thanx for your advice mate... Much appreciated All - Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. 13. Thanks! I've found your posts very well thought out on this forum. I completely agree with you. I find myself fortunate in a couple of instances- First, my nutritionist is extremely thorough, and for the rest of my life my Bariatric program allows me monthly access to her one on one. That is huge for me- I've run across others who see them pre op and then only a couple times post op. That's it. Anything beyond that is "not included". Secondly, where she gives "blanket" advise, she always takes it a step further to tailor it to me. I'm sure she does this for all her people. She weighs strengths and weaknesses and adjusts accordingly. Case in point- during preop diet, it was 4 shakes a day, and raw non starchy veggies as needed to help you "fill up" and get the crunch crave met. Unfortunately, there are certain veggies like broccoli and cauliflower I like warmed up. Not soggy, but a bit cooked. When I queried her in this, she ok'd me to go ahead and steam as I pleased. Her rationale for requiring only raw was that many patients would cook, add butter, or perhaps purchase the frozen bags with sauces. Being compliant, she wasn't worried about me. ( Besides, I've always preferred my veggies "undressed") Thanks for your input!

I have been using the app called "Lose it" which seems to better integrate with Apple Health Kit. Apple health is a database that is included with IOS, apple's built in software. The advantage of Apple Health integration is that the apple watch and other step and exercise data are automatically fed into the app. Plus any other app that queries the Apple Health Kit database can pull up your nutrition intake that you have entered into Loose It. This app has a bar code scanner and has a huge database of products. Really easy to log food intake, set weight goals and monitor calorie consumption and burn levels. WN
  15. Hello. I'm waiting for sleeve surgery too. In my case I understood that the doctor intends to cut 70-75 % of my stomach, so it will contain just a volume of 150 ml maximum circa. Doing a research for a query similar to this topic, I found that the surgeon decides the amount of percentage to cut basing the evaluation on many factors. There isn't an only size for the result, that is decided depending on the patient conditions. The same surgery is made also for very different health problems of the stomach, for example to eliminate mutating stomach metaplasia. In this case the surgery criteria are the opposite of the aim of weight loss, so they try to preserve the maximum portion of stomach and give to the patient a post op diet studied to gain or keep weight... 16. @@Dub -- your approach during weight losing phases has been to maximize Protein and minimize everything else. You've lost 180+ pounds so far, so you're really on the weight-losing train. But remember what your doc said -- it's time to start making friends with veggies. @@Bufflehead is right -- you won't need as much fiber now because you're eating much less than you will be when you start figuring out maintenance. BTW, I think guys eating (I'm guessing here) 2500 calories/day are supposed to eat around 32-35 grams of insoluble fiber. And for @@Dub -- no, I haven't used Benefiber or Metamucil. Never needed to. I do eat an apple 4-5 times a week (unpeeled), and that pretty much does it for me. BIG CAVEAT: My posts above describe what works for me. Everything I do may not work for you. Don't ignore your surgeons / NUTs / whatever. But if this thread raises confusion or questions for you, please query your medical team to see what they have to say or to find out if (perhaps) you've misunderstood their life-long instructions. There are a lot of different recommendations out there. I know that one bariatric surgeon (Dr. Matthew Weiner) makes a lot of online videos and has published a book suggesting we all eat a pound a day of plant-based foods, e.g., vegetables, whole grains and fruits. 17. In Indiana, there is a center of excellence for weight loss surgery located in Indianapolis. That hospital not only has a complete staff of surgeons, nutritionists and other specialist. They also sponsor Bariatric Surgery Support Group meetings throughout the state. So you might touch base with the hospital where your surgery will be performed and query if they also sponsor or know of local area support groups meetings. Generally these meetings occur once per month and are free.

    Friends....

I'm THE WORST person in the world to talk about other human interactions but I'll give you my current take on your query.. Just go do it... Find something you like to do... Preferably something legal.. Find a group that is already doing it... Join in.. If all those people suck, move on to another group.. Eventually you'll strike up something with someone... Use this forum as a starting place... So many people with so much in common here... Ok, it's not necessarily gonna be coffees and play dates.. But (from what I hear), an e-friend can be every bit as good as a 'real life' friend.. I reckon friends are like taxis... When you don't need one, there's hundreds around.. But when you need one - nothing!! But that may just be my bitter, realistic side showing... You'll be fine... Unless you're some sort of freak... And even then, there'll be a group somewhere for such people.. Good luck on your Quest my friend!!!

  20. Hi all, I had my 8 week visit with the Dietician today and have been progressed onto 'normal foods'. Yayyy! I've lost 12.5kg (28 lb) since my Op & feel good. She was happy with my weight loss, but slightly concerned how quickly I'm losing and queried whether I have been eating enough. I assured her that I have and don't let myself get too hungry. I've only been walking 2-3 times a week and she doesn't recommend upping the ante just yet as I'm still recovering. She said I can try toast, crispbread, soft drink & I alcohol (keeping in mind it will affect me more). I also told her how I've eaten chocolate and wasn't scolded- just told it's a 'sometimes food' and to know my limits. It was pleasantly refreshing because some people in the bariatric community talk like it's the antichrist lol I can hear the US weight loss patients collectively gasp at how much free reign I'm allowed. I have faith in her professional advice as she works closely with my surgeon, who is well regarded in my state & has trained most other GB surgeons in the city. What I am wondering is whether other people have been given the same advice. I don't really have much contact with other GB patients in Australia, so can't compare. I wonder whether pre & post op diets are that much stricter in the US because insurance companies fund the surgery costs, therefore want the patient to drop weight super quickly? I might be way off....I don't know much about US insurance. I just know that I paid hospital cover for 12 months and was instantly approved for surgery, whereas it seems like the process is much more complicated in America. So glad to be progressing on to the next stage in this journey.

    Bypass vs. Sleeve

Hiya, I only had bypass done at the start of February & started at 250 lbs. I too have a heart condition (Dilated Cardiomyopathy) and was given the all clear from my Cardiologist. I queried whether bypass would hinder absorption of medications and he said no. There's still a tiny bit in my brain that worries that it will and I will end up sick again. All I can do is remain positive. I also worry about malnutrition, but I already was malnourished with the garbage I ate. My surgeon suggested bypass to me because I'm more of a 'sweet eater' than a general 'grazer'. I agreed because it has the operation has a long history and there's no way I'm letting anyone remove most of my stomach!! He said stomach tissue is important for grafts in the case of Esophageal cancer. Not saying it's going to happen- but I like the option. Just my 2 cents (from a noob).
  23. Search issue.....if your query has more than one word, put quotes around it. I typed in "Protein Cakes" and got two results, one was this thread. But did you notice that "Protein cakes" is not in the topic, but was in the content. Also make sure you check that little drop down menu just left of the search symbol. If it is not set to FORUMS, you will not get as productive a search. This function is such a crapshoot. I just finished a 45 minute Zumba workout and came into the kitchen for a protein snack. So, I tried this recipe with a variation. I used vanilla Protein Powder, 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda, 4 tablespoons of milk, and 1/4 of a sugar free vanilla pudding packet. 45 seconds gave me a fluffy cupcake that smelled awesome. I have some low cal whip cream but decided to try making a frosting with some coconut oil that I recently purchased. I melted it and mixed it with the rest of the pudding powder. OMG! I will do this more often. Next time I am going to use coconut oil in place of the syrup.
  24. A couple of new reports in JAMA Surgery shed some light on the impact of bariatric surgery on remission of Type 2 diabetes. One report focused on data from about 570 people who had undergone some type of bariatric surgery between 2005 and 2012, who also had Type 2 diabetes (T2DM). All had started with a BMI of 35 or more (morbid obesity — standard eligibility for such surgery). These folks were matched with diabetic patients who had not had surgery (1880 people), but were otherwise similar in terms of age when the operated people had surgery, sex and BMI. The main focus of the study was the extent to which T2DM remission occurred, and whether the level of hemoglobin A1c, or HbA1c, (a measure of long-term blood glucose control) decreased to less than 6.0 percent (any HbA1c over 6.5 percent is considered diabetes). The investigators, led by Dr. Jan Peter Yska from the Medical Centre Leeuwarden, Leeuwarden, the Netherlands reported that 95 (out of the 570) persons with T2DM who underwent surgery were in remission compared to only five patients in the non-surgical group (1880 total). The results also depended on the type of bariatric surgery involved. Gastric bypass surgery was the most effective, followed by sleeve gastrectomy and then by gastric banding (for more information on the types of bariatric surgery, read here). Thus, the researchers found, the positive effects of bariatric surgery could be seen for at least two years post operation. Although the standard cut point for bariatric surgery is usually a BMI of at least 35, some have queried whether or not such surgery would also benefit diabetes patients with lower BMIs. This question was investigated by Dr. Chih-Cheng Hsu from the China Medical University in Taiwan and colleagues. They examined records of 52 diabetic patients who received bariatric surgery — either sleeve gastrectomies or gastric bypass — and compared them to records of 299 T2DM patients whose conditions were managed medically. All patients had BMIs lower than 35. By five years post-surgery, the operated group had lost 21 percent of their initial body weight, bringing their BMIs down from about 31 to 24.5. In addition, their average HBA1c levels dropped from 9.1 percent to 6.3 percent over the same period. Thirty-six percent of this group had complete remission of their T2DM. In contrast, only one person in the medically-managed group, had a complete remission of their disease, and their HBA1c was, on average, 8 percent — still in the diabetic range. All differences between surgical and control groups were statistically significant. http://acsh.org/2015/12/bariatric-surgery-linked-to-diabetes-remission/ I suspect on the first study, the reason why the remission rate is so low is because they are lumping lap band patients in with RNY and sleeve patients.

working out and not losing weight

Hey girl! Well I read you post! Either late but I think I can still provide answer to this query of yours. See, undoubtedly going to the gym brings out some of the positive results but after that when we leave the gym in between we got to get covered with an unknown fat & gained wired muscle which can actually bring body to a weird situation thus which cannot be fulfilled by any of the gym instructions. so, in my opinion you must go for the African dance workout as it is much effective and also much easier to learn. You can also look for the videos online as they have their completely maintained website on the internet which help people to know more about them and also it allows them to get classes at the home itself.. Hope this will work at you Thank you and have a nice day
