Brenda, best of luck to you! You fight for this! Get all the info. that you can and be prepared. You're not being selfish! You're saving your life and reducing or eliminating health problems that can only continue to get worse. You're worth it and I know that your family thinks so too! Brenda, I've lost 49 pounds in 4 1/2 months. Nothing else I've tried has been this successful or this easy! Sure, it's work to do your part, and you really need to do some form of consistent exercise. But when you're not starving all the time and obsessing about food, you can get out there and enjoy life! I've found out that I like to get outside and ride bikes with my husband. I was a previous full-time couch potato. Since my banding, I've taken part in a 20 mile and a 25 mile bike benefits. I just returned from climbing up and down mountains in Estes Park, Colorado (4 - 5 hrs. daily) for a full week. Granted, I had to take my Celebrex (which I now try to take only when absolutely necessary) and use Aspercreme each night. But last year, I tried to climb a couple of short trails to waterfalls in Colorado and thought I was going to have a coronary because my heart was pounding so hard, sweat was pouring down my beet red face, and my legs hurt so bad that I gritted my teeth to stifle the moan each time I had to move. From last year to this year is truly a miracle! This is from someone who lives at sea level, now climbing up to 10,000 ft. high! I would never have even dreamed of being able to do such things a few short months ago! My blood pressure, asthma, hiatal hernia, gastric reflux, arthritis have drastically improved and my prescription meds. reduced by half. That alone is saving me a fortune! Our grocery bill has been greatly reduced because I try to be more conscientous of the types of food I'm buying. My whole family is eating healthier than before. Now, I do have my weak moments and eat something that I shouldn't. But I know that's O.K. I can get back on the "Band Wagon" the next day.

Where do I start? I was banded on Dec 7 2005 weighed in at 392 pre op and now in at 362 at my 1st band fill this week. I am really looking forward to the road ahead and see where it takes me. Not feeling very much restriction. Though I understand that it could take a few fills to get it right. I have read many stories and I must say it's great to hear of all your success! -G:fencing:

Hi Liz, I too am a newbie to this. I watched the seminar on my laptop...lol...4 times!!! My sis had gastric bypass...which is not my thing, so I am vaguely familiar with how it goes. Banding is more my speed. Not to mention, the weight loss is longer -which is better for me. I too have three kids, daughter will be 19 in Oct, son will be 17 in Aug, and little daughter is 9..they are very supportive. Hubby is a little scared I think...funny he isn't the one going under the knife...lol. i can't wait for this to be over I am so excited! I go to the doc on tuesday to get my sleep apnea results, if no apnea, I can schedule the surgery right away, if I do have apnea, i have to get fitted and wear the cpac for 2 weeks prior to surgery. Other than that, I have had all my tests done and my general practicioner has given her blessing. I have been working on it since May and finally its near the time to schedule the surgery. I can't wait to feel good again and get back to the old me!!

Newbie from Houston

Hello, I am new to the Forum. I was banded 3/10/06 and today was my post-op appt. No problems thus far. Tomorrow I get to start mushies. Weighed in today at 192. Incisions were pretty itchy last week but no longer. Sleeping on my side again too. Have been eating soup and protein shakes. I love the protein shakes with Carb Countdown dairy beverage. I think I'll keep drinking them. I have craved pizza and chinese food, I must confess! I'm trying hard to think of the band as my friend now instead of food. Good luck to all of you. This forum has been a wealth of info and support. -
Hi everyone, I just had my band put in on Nov.21st 06. I am 3 weeks out and always hungry!!! I followed the liquid diet for about a week. As of now I am really struggling here. I am getting very depressed because i am feeling just the same as i was pre-op. I can eat anything that i want. ANYTHING!!! Any advice on when i will start to feel the effects of the band?? Did anyone of you go through the same thing after surgery?? Please let me know. Thanks

Hi Rhonda. I actually am on regular foods now, with the exception of starch. The clinic that performed my surgery has patients progress quicker than most other bariatric centers. I eat mostly grilled chicken breast, lettuce, eggs, and various fruits. I had my first fill last week though and it seems like maybe I'm not tolerating raw veggies very well.

Hello! My name is Terri. My surgery was performed on April 5, 2010. I'm 5 weeks post-op and to date have lost 37.2 lbs. I have a long way to go, but I'm getting there finally

Looks like I am just following you around the site tonight!!! My Dr, recommended an OTC stool softener, taken 2 times a week. I try to remember it, and usually get it close to twice weekly, and have had no problems. He did say to watch and make sure the one I got did not have additional laxative, and to stay away from the fiber pills, that they could prove to be VERY problematic with the band. I like cookies---so I like the solution!!! Kat

1 week post-op. The diary of a banded woman
Biglilmama75 commented on Biglilmama75's blog entry in Blog 47847
My one week anniversary! Woohoo! I'll never forget March 23rd. That day didn't come off without a hitch. I travelled from a Northeastern point of PA to Smithtown, LI, NY. Mapquest and GPS speaking , it's a 2hr 30min drive. In reality, it's about a 3-4 hour trip and I don't know what I was thinking. I had to make sure that our 5 children were secured in school and daycare before we headed out. 3 of my children were dropped off at a neighbor's house at 6:45 am. They don't normally wake up until 7. My 2 babies were safe and secure at daycare by 7. They had no idea why they were so tired, bless their hearts. No one knew about my surgery, except my hubby and 2 of my friends. Everyone thought I was at court as a witness for a medical case.... I've even had to write down my stories on my iphone calendar to keep track of what I told who. I've worked so hard at keeping my secret because I come from a long line of judgemental family members and a circle of friends who like to talk. I don't like to be the object of anyones stories. Besides, this is for me, not for them. My appointment was set for 10:30 arrival with an 11:30 scheduled surgery. HA! Have you ever driven into NYC on a Monday morning during rush hour??? Needless to say, I got there late, cursing my head off the whole way, hitting traffic in place I NEVER hit traffic in the entire 6 months I was going for consults and tests and appointments and procedures and appointments... you get the picture. Poor planning on my part. What I should have done was left the night before, spent the night at my parents house in Brooklyn and drove from there. The problem was that I needed a driver for the ride home, and there was no one to watch my children but my DH. I couldn't ask anyone to take the kids earlier than 6:45, because it would have been asking for too much. I did what I had to do! I got to ambulatory surgery at nearly 11 and I was all freaked out that they would turn me away. Dr. Nick even had one of the nurses call me at 8:30 to find out if I could come in earlier because he was running early. DAMN! I could have gone in earlier. They were so nice in ambulatory. They took me in and did all the pre-op stuff they were supposed to do. I saw nurses and techs and support group leaders and nutritionists and the nurse anethesist and anethesiologist. -
Had Lapband Surgery 6/12/07 from Sydney Australia
jennid42 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi My name is Jenny. I am into my 2nd week after surgery and have lost 5kgs in that time. I am on a liquid diet and i can honestly say i am over it. Can someone give me advise on how to cope until i can start my puree diet and when i do start the puree diet will i experience dificulties with getting use to food in my stomach again? Any feedback would be very helpful. :huggie: -
Congratulations! There are two things that helped me stick to the liquid diet. 1. I stayed focused on my end goals which was to get healthy and I knew i needed to be strong. 2. I took one hour and one day at a time and tried not to think about how long i would be on strictly liquids. What i found was after day 2, I really did not care anymore and that made it easier to handle. Lastly, I would not have survived without good homemade chicken broth. You get so sick of the sweet taste of the Protein shakes that homemade, well seasoned chicken broth keep me going. I practically lived on it for those 2 weeks and the 3 weeks post op as well. Make it homemade though because that crap in a can tastes like dirty dishwater. Blech! Best of luck to you. Bypass was the best thing I ever did. Now i am about to have my second plastics surgery and I cannot beleive it has already been two years for me.

I ate thin crust pizza slice I was fine. I ate a fiery taco from Taco Bell I was fine. However, those are not good choices! I want to make my own lunches for work but I don't need a lot. I wondering what type of wrap y'all have tried or pita bread and how did it do? I'm 4 months out and down 78 lbs that's with a 2 week stall which I broke a couple days ago. Am I losing too fast? Was a 54 in my waist and now I'm a 40 and dropping. I think it's working to good!

watermelon seeds replied to sandymac's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello Sandy, I am waiting for my appointment to see Dr. Weaver because last week it got cancelled because she had an emergency. I was told that they will call me next week to reschedule. Anyway I heard that she was the best in Memphis so I hope that you will give her office a call she works for St. Francis Hospital. Good Luck I am expecting good things :woot:. -
I would lose the mashed potatoes. I know my post op diet doesn't allow that until 8 weeks. Focus more on protien.

Best Thing I Have Ever Done
Beyon Sleeve replied to DebbieDeb's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
DebbieDeb you have made great progress so far! Don't give up! I know the mention of exercise can sound like a four letter word, but it is a piece of the weightloss puzzle. I started out slow with walking 20 mins a day 3 days a week. Now, after 6 months I'm running 4 days a week, but that was MY goal. Find YOUR goal and do it (literally write it down and put it on the fridge...I did!) You've got the ultimate tool to help you! Grab a buddy to walk with you. You CAN do this, girl! Stay strong, stay focused. -
Liquid Diet Begins 2/19
4me4them replied to soon2besleeved's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is not too bad....I didn't really mind it, although I was pretty grumpy the first week. In fact I stole a phrase from someone on here and would tell my husband that I was "hangry" hungry + angry....that was his cue to leave me alone There was one unfortunate tantrum with the Christmas lights...but really, those things get really tangled...who is to say it was the liquid diet. -
I just noticed today that the beds of my nails have become a thick white horizontal line instead of the small half moon that they usually are, and the line is about 2-3mm thick. I have tried looking it up online and the only things I can find is when your nail is white for almost the whole nail, not just the nail beds. I did read it could be Protein deficiency, but I have been doing a really good job getting my protein and Water in - unless it's just growth from the past few weeks when I wasn't getting as much protein. I had a lot of pre-op tests and I doubt that it's attributed to a liver/kidney issue as all my blood work came back normal pre-op (a month ago). Anyway, I was just curious if anyone had experienced this - I was thinking maybe low protein or anemia? I looked through the search function and I couldn't find anything on this. I know you guys aren't doctors and I'll call my doctor if it keeps growing this way, but I was wondering if this is common or if anyone else has had this? Thanks!

I have always enjoyed margaritas with friends at the local cantina along with the rich food. Since the band yes there were major cut backs. I continued to drink though and really to much and to often. My weightloss was consistent but slow. For the last 5 weeks I have not been to my favorite spanish resturaunt and the scale has noticed. My weightloss doubled over the last three weeks. I was drinking a lot of calories bottom line. Eating the food went hand in hand. I am now getting back into cooking my own food. My band is good to me as I can eat most anything with caution and limits. I wanted to share this because I did not think a couple drinks a couple times a week would have such an effect on my weight loss but it did. Don't be fooled like me and don't let anything stand in the way of our quest for being healthy! I'm in the 50lb club now and with renewed vigor!

Well, almost! After getting the sleeve on the 13th I head back to work on Wednesday, which just happens to be the day I can start on soft foods and it's my birthday!! I have to say that I had what seems to be a really speedy, successful, and thankfully uneventful recovery. My time in the hospital was fine, I happen to work at the hospital where I had surgery so I had some friendly visitors from colleagues and great care (which I know would have happened no matter what) and I was told all along the way how well I was doing. I had my surgery at 9am on Tuesday and was out around 10. My Dr. said that it went great, that there was minimal bleeding and when I woke up I didn't even have drains in. The PCA pump with my pain meds was a blessing but I didn't use it all that often and I was up and walking that afternoon. I got home on Wednesday after urinating on my own and doing the swallow test to check for leaks. All was well and I was home on my own couch by (everyone else's) dinner time. One thing that was really hard was that I got NO liquids or ice chips my entire stay. I was soo thirsty the whole time so when I got home, sipping juice was fantastic. My first 3 days post op was all juice all the time, 100% juice diluted 1/2 & 1/2 with Water. After that I progressed to Protein shakes and I'm on those until Wednesday. I'm so tired of the sweet shakes so I've been enjoying blended Soups with unflavored powder. I weighed myself the morning of surgery and I was 257.5 and I am now 241 so I'm down 16.5 lbs. in less than 2 weeks. I think that's a good start but I really don't have anything to compare it to- I just know that's better than anything else I've ever done! I'm really looking forward to moving onto the soft foods stage although I'm a little nervous about starting that while I'm back at work. Thankfully the admin I work with had this surgery last year and knows everything I'm going through so I have someone to compare notes to. I am feeling good, happy that I'm almost at the point where I can incorporate some soft healthy foods and I'm actually excited to start planning healthy meals for me and my partner. I'm really enjoying reading everyone's posts and hope to be an active part of this site!

It just depends on your doctor I guess. My doctor has impressed me with his thoroughness. He said the main reason for the pre op diet of two weeks was not so much to lose wt. although that was a plus, but to get me used to putting protein first and to shrink my fatty liver so he could still do laproscopic...
