Congrats! I'm still looking at dr's for lap band. I have 2 appts/seminars in the next 10 days. If they recommend a bypass I'll direct them to your post! Large weightloss can be done with the band- you just have work at it. Something I've from this site is the band is a tool, it'll only work if you use it right.

Hi all, just stopping by to see how all is doing. Janine congrats on getting your first fill next week. Now onto your second chance at losing weight again. Now the second time around should bring about greater results than the first time. I look forward to going through it with you. Juli, I'll be signing up for nutrition classes next week. The school has four financial payment plan.s. And classes begin in January,2009 and ends July,2009. I'm really excited about the classes. They even have precourses, so I'll be taking those also. I belong to a support group and one of our members will be featured on show "The Doctors (a CBS show)". She also attended the Philadephia Obesity Help conference and met Dr Dennis Hurwitz, he is world famous for his Total Body Lift for post weightloss surgery patients. They will also help pay for her surgery along with her insurance company and some of her savings. if need. It is EVERYTHING from her arms to boobs, stomach, thighs, liposuction--THE WORKS! (I cut and paste some of her words.) All this is supposed to be before year end. So hope in reporting from her experience of the surgery it will help some of those here considering the surgery. She had gastric bypass surgery and is about two years or more out. She did mention that she was willing to pay for the surgery herself, until she found out it would cost $34,000. Well, I'll cut this short and hope to read good posts from all.

I have to say that people like to gossip and will excentuate any part of it that they know will grab you the most. I quickly looked through the responses and it did not seem like anyone could tell you exactly what killed this person. Also why is what killed her such a big secret? You mentioned you were'nt supposed to find out but someone told you. Reminds me of a segment on 20/20 years ago about someone recuperating from Gastric Bypass. Knowing what I know now this person was probably in the very begining of their recovery. The show however showed them miserable and devistated because they could only eat one or two mouthfuls at a time. -
Considering Revision - some questions
lillian.b.white posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi there! I've been reading quite a bit here and other places about revising from band to sleeve. Here's my backstory: I got the realize band in 2009 - self pay unfortunately, due to a stupid anti obesity clause with my insurance policy at the time. I was relatively successful - my starting weight was 335 and I got down exactly 100 pounds over the next 2 years. I experienced regain of 45 pounds after a car accident in late 2013 and another injury a few months later. I've worked hard since then and am about 5 pounds away from my original low weight (and plan on surpassing that). The thing is, the whole time I've had the band, I've been a chronic vomiter, I get stuck ALL THE TIME (especially when I eat things I'm SUPPOSED to eat) no matter what and I never really feel full or satisfied, just uncomfortable and stuck. I always blamed myself and thought it just must be normal. But the more I read now, the more I realize that life doesn't have to be like this! I've been asked if I'd ever consider getting it removed and even the thought starts to hurl me into a panic. "I could NEVER get it removed!! I'll gain all the weight back and more and get diabetes again and a fatty liver and increase my depression and anxiety... NEVER!!" Plus I spent $25,000 on this dang thing!! But I hadn't thought much about a revision until the past couple months. The insurance I have now covers WLS. One question I have though is do you think they'd cover a revision? Especially if the band was self pay? Also, my BMI is now under 40 (as of today it's 37.6)... my comorbidities have pretty much gone away, aside from slightly high cholesterol and I just found out I have 2 herniated discs (definitely related to obesity. I'm only 35, for crying out loud!) would they even ok it based on that stuff. I know no one here can say for sure. Just looking to see if any of you have had any experience with a similar situation. Thanks in advance! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Sleeve To Bypass after only 10 weeks. Surgery Date 9/5/2019
ThreeOhThree replied to ThreeOhThree's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Here is a diagram like what my doctor showed me at 1 week post op. The black is the positive margin aggressive cancer, the green is the tumor, the purple line separates what was removed. When they removed it they did not know how aggressive it was otherwise yes they would have done a bypass. -
Hello Everyone, I am new to this site so I appreciate your help. I currenly have had the LapBand for a year now. I have had many issues with the Band(Including revision of portal site, intergestion, pain in area, weight gain and vomitting. I am having a new DR remove the lapband next week and I was thinking of then going to get the Sleeve Procedure done. Did anyone decide to make this decision and has any insight for me? Thank you again, Jennifer.

Maintaining Weight While Travel
Sojourner replied to losangelesislovely's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Though I have not traveled for that length of time post op, a few suggestions that helped me on my relatively short sojourns were to plan ahead. I always travel with a few bottles of Water to stay properly hydrated and to help stave off hunger if it's too soon to have my next meal. Keep healthy Snacks with you in the event that you are delayed with having your next meal. Nuts travel well and don't need refrigeration. Be careful to continue to watch your portion sizes, and get some exercise as often as it is possible. The most important thing, as Cheryl shared is to revise your thinking about food; yes you will be traveling to exotic places...but is the local food really the main reason you are there? How about looking at the local customs and scenery your priorities, along with your research the priorities... Safe travels... -
Anyone else striving to loss 100 lbs by your Bandiversary?

Well, I'm on another plateau again (which is just SO frustrating ), but even so, I am determined to keep my focus....... I have a revised goal now, I would like to be at goal weight and have completed (or at least made good headway) on whatever plastic surgery I might need by Bandiversary. There, I've said it -- now I have to do it! Sleeve surgery, approved, by, insurance,?
schatzie replied to schatzie's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I understand you, and the worst is if you have the bypass and you have an accident, is going to be very difficult to keep you nurture since your stomach doesn' absorb that much. -
I don't know of anybody who has done that... probably because one could achieve the same thing by having the Fluid removed without the risk of surgery. I've sort of experienced life as a non-Bandster for a long-time... longer than I've been filled and Banded, actually. In my first 18 months of being Banded, I lost 95 pounds. Then I became pregnant.... three times! Each time I've tried to fill after the pregnancy, the Band hasn't worked the same. So I've had to be unfilled again. Up until the start of my third pregnancy, I had maintained a loss of 60-65 pounds of the 95. It's the first time in my life I've ever maintained any weight loss for more than a day. Seriously. I was not one of those people who lost 100 pounds and gained it back. I was the person who never loss more than 7 pounds to begin with... and always gained it back + 10. I just had my third baby... so we'll see how my final attempt at a refill goes in about 6 weeks. I can't imagine not having a tool to use... so I'm looking into a VSG should I need a revision. I really wish the Band worked as promised, however... as I really don't want to go through surgery again. It's such a different decision when one is single vs. when one has three little people to care for.

What Can Cause Band Slippage

Sleeve surgery, approved, by, insurance,?
LAN2k replied to schatzie's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
If you don't have a slip or an erosion, you have to start a "paper" trail of problems. I was told that the acid regurg. and inability to sleep lying down would require about 9 months of MD documented visits before insurance would "consider" paying for the band to be removed and revising to another surgery. This is horrible...I can't believe to what extent some of you have had to go to and through to finally get to a place where you can lose weight with securtiy. I'm literally choked up here. I am in LI, NY so far I've been told "no" to the Sleeve by the doctor(who considers the Sleeve "experimental" and doesn't do it), who would do the Lap Band surgery on me, (if I am approved...(35BMI with co morbidity factors...)Ins.- Medicare). His secretary told me that medicare will not approve the Sleeve. I do want weight loss surgery scared as I am because I have been around the try-to-lose-weight block so many times that I finally am willing to sacrifice part of my anatomy! I need help. I am feeling pressured due to insurance "approval" issues to take what I can get, either Lap Band or Gastric Bypass. I am not in a position to self-pay nor take out a loan. I am so frustrated. The more I read about being "banded" the more I want to get the sleeve...the more desperate I am becoming. Thanks all for such sincere posts, my heart goes out to you with wishes for victory in the restoration of your bodies to their perfect weight with incredible health and longevity. -
How do you feel about non surgical weightloss success stories?
Ang1982 replied to solaa5's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Well kudos and props are given to them it is exactly it - lets reinterview them in 3-5 years and see where they are at. My boyfriend lost a LOT of weight on his own. probably 200'ish lbs by working out like crazy, and not consuming very many calories. This was before I met him. He doesn't work out anymore (medical condition currently trying to figure out what it is - really bad / sore joints = cant work out) and well we don't eat the greatest so he has gained some weight back. Maybe 50 lbs but he's gained it back. We are both looking forward to losing weight with my band. I lost 30 lbs right before we got together on a "fad diet" then it came back and brought another 30 lbs worth of friends . I also know a couple people who have had gastric bypass 4-5+ years ago, and they have also gained weight back. . . -
Has Your Weight Loss Affected Your Marraige / Relationship?
lawanda jessica replied to mariaxoxo4u's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Ok um my guy/friend doesn't know and I want to keep it that way. Years ago when I went for the bypass he was totally against it. I was avoiding him since the surgery. He came over yesterday and I was getting undressed and I forgot I had a bandage on my port scar and he asked me why was a bandaid on my stomach? I said oh I burned myself with grease on my stomach while frying chicken. He bought it! I just dont think I need to tell him this. He's not my husband and he's barely my boyfriend. When it comes to making serious moves in my life the only true opinion that counts is mine! -
Anyone got info on surgery done in N Ireland?
julesni replied to WRIGGLE's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi - I'm from NI and got my band fitted on 11 Sept privately in England - I paid £5k. As far as I am aware, there was a waiting list for about 150 persons on the NHS from a few years back - but they no longer do the surgery (band or bypass) here and are sending the patients over to England to clear the list. And again, I think, no new patients are being added to the list. It would be interesting to know if Dr Kennedy did private ops here because, I was told there was no way I could get my band done anywhere in Ireland! Julie -
Food log format? List of do's and don'ts re: food
DLCoggin replied to meyouus's topic in Food and Nutrition
You'll find more food ideas here on the forum than you can shake a stick at. Go to the Home page and under "Main Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums" you'll find "Food and Nutrition" - a whole forum dedicated to appropriate foods at various post-op stages. The first few weeks following your surgery can be challenging but they pass quickly and you'll soon find yourself in the routine. Virtually all surgery teams give their patients very detailed, written instructions on what to eat, when to eat, how much to eat - at each stage of the process. It sounds daunting but it's not nearly as bad as most folks imagine. Stay positive. Stay patient. And stay focused on following the protocol as closely to the letter as you possibly can. You're gonna love the new you!! P.S. I strongly agree with what others have said - food logs are an enormously powerful tool and the more you use it, the more you learn and the more valuable they become. I'm almost two years out and I log every single day. My Fitness Pal and Sparkpeople are both excellent! -
When people ask what you did to lose weight how do you respond?
Dream4tc replied to cal2okl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have had my coworkers ask. I am a nurse so I work with nurses and physicians. A couple of the nurses that I work with seen me running to the bathroom to vomit on numerous occasions over the past year and 1/2. When I had to have my band out emergently due to slip and nonstop vomiting, my coworker asked me. I said abdominal surgery. She was an OR nurse for 30 yrs. Then she said, "you're not going to tell me?". I said no. She also knows that I will be having another "abdominal surgery" next month, but this time she didn't ask. Another coworker also asked. I told her the same thing abdominal....which can mean so many different areas. The nurses that I work with are gossip queens and there is no way in hell am I going to reveal my surgery. In fact one day a few yrs ago, we got on the subject of WLS and her doctor had recommended it. She is very obese with newly diagnosed Diabetes. She went on and on how she could never do bypass or any other WLS, bashing it into the ground. So, I just keep my mouth shut. If asked later, I will say diet restriction and exercise which is true. -
Dear timeformyself, you can do it too! It isn't as easy as falling off a log, or having gastric bypass. You have to work at lit. But, when you do, you make a commitment to yourself that you are doing it. I, always, would start diets with good intentions, and then fail because I got bored. If that happens with lapband, your band should stop a total failure. I originally wrote will, but then realized that folks have eaten around their bands to cause themselves to fail. Best wishes to you. and keep in touch! Karen

Gastric Bypass or Sleeve Gastrectomy?
MacMadame replied to flee75's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm sorry, but that's simply not true and it's a matter of biological fact. The greater curvature of the stomach is the big stretchy part. It is designed to expand when food is put into it. The part that remains after a sleeve is a very tough muscle Fiber and is extremely hard to stretch. Bypass pouches (which are made out of the fundus) typically start out holding 1-2 oz immediately post-op as they are swollen. So do the sleeves. Then over time the swelling goes down and by one year out, many bypass patients can eat as much as a cup of food at time even hard Protein, while at the end of the first year a sleeve patient's sleeve typically holds 4-5 oz. of food only and never gets bigger. Stretching of the pouch is an issue with bypass and that's why regain is an issue. Over a period of time, average EWL for bypass and band approach each other. This is largely due to regain on the part of bypass patients. Generally 25% of bypass patients experience regain compared to 10% of sleeve patients. Btw, LapSF publishes their results in respected peer-reviewed journals. To imply that their data is biased is laughable. They do a lot of sleeves because they've seen how well they work. -

Rash on Stomach and Breasts post op. Anyone else?

After my RNY gastric bypass surgery I did break out in a rash on my stomach and breasts. It was so bad that I went to urgent care. The doctor prescribed benadryl and another topical antibiotic. The rash cleared up within a week. Sent from my SM-N910T using the BariatricPal App -
Gastric bypass - how about you? Are using Dr Hahn also? My dad had Gastric Bypass with Dr Hahn 7 years ago. He says Dr Hahn saved his life. My dad was 70 when he had the surgery. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Hi all! I am in Walnut Creek. I had my surgery done March 3, 2016...just passed my one year mark. Due to some complications from the sleeve, it looks like I'm going to have a revision to an RNY. I'd like to find people to talk to about all this. My husband is wonderful, but he hasn't experienced anything like this, so he doesn't have information or opinions to offer me. If anyone wants to chat, message me!!

Band complications during & after pregnancy
sinda replied to Wheetsin's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
losethemess, if it makes you feel any better, chances are your baby is getting plenty to eat. There are exceptions (which is why you should be monitored by an OB), but in general the baby will take whatever it needs from you. A bigger concern would be that you would be losing out on something you need. For most pregnant women, the baby's needs are met first and the mother's needs are met with what is left. That's usually not a problem because everyone is getting everything they need, but chances are if anyone is losing out, it's not the baby. With my first pregnancy, I was still down 17 pounds immediately before my baby was born. And he was a perfectly healthy 7 lbs 7 oz. My doctor watched me carefully, and my child was fine. Losing weight can be scary when you're pregnant, but it's not necessarily indicative of a huge problem. Just discuss your concerns with your doctors, and make sure you are doing what you need to do to keep both of you healthy. If that means getting an unfill, by all means, do it (especially if you're having a problem keeping liquids down). But at this point, I wouldn't worry too much about the weight loss--most weight isn't gained until the third trimester, anyway. And gaining weight won't necessarily affect the tightness of your band, either. (Mine didn't with either pregnancy.) When you can eat again, take care to eat the right things. The things you should be eating in pregnancy are largely the things you should be eating anyway, minus a few pregnancy-specific items. Try to eat well, and you should be fine. Don't use restriction or lack thereof as an excuse to abandon what you know are good eating habits. What you described actually sounds a lot like what I experienced with my first pregnancy. Perhaps brought on by morning sickness (or "all-the-time sickness," as I referred to it), I had a slip which made it exceedingly difficult to keep things down. And I guess my take away message with that was: 1) my baby was fine, and 2) I had to get a revision four days after giving birth. It was rough, but we all made it. Talk with your OB and band doctor about this possibility. They won't be able to check for a slippage while you're pregnant, but having this possible explanation in the back of your minds may help decide how to proceed as you progress in your pregnancy.
