    Do you reflux?

Hi there, I went in for a second opinion this past week and the doctor said if I experienced reflux with the band then I will experience reflux with the sleeve. She said that most patients with the sleeve have reflux and will be on medication possibly for the rest of their lives. I'm starting to lean towards the bypass with that information. So my question is, do you have reflux? And if so, is it as bad as when you had the band? Can you sleep at night or it is minor? Any help would be great, thanks!
  2. to answer your first question - yes, we do. when people pop off at the mouth spreading false information to prospective patients for no reason, it's definitely something to get worked up over. a skilled surgeon can reverse an RNY. a back-alley Mexican chop-shop probably can't. but again, the RNY is such a superior procedure it is virtually never even ASKED FOR, much less done. compare that to the constant flood of sleeve patients who have to have revision surgery to.... you guessed it.... RNY. second question - yes, ghrelin reduces with bypass. one study showed it reduced MORE than the sleeve.
  3. RNY was recommended by my surgeon but he said I could choose either. I choose RNY because I wanted a one and done. I didn't have issues with GERD but I didn't want to chance having problems with reflux after the sleeve and having to have a revision to RNY. Very happy with my decision. Not worried about skin and such. I did this for my health as I was facing 2 knee replacements. Now I think I can survive without them - still can't jump but I can walk without pain and that's all I care about.
  4. I suffer from a very heart burn. Loose the weight faster. Dislocated knee. Fear of a “stretching your stomach” some say it’s impossible but hey is my fear. I felt like there would be a change in a my taste buds as some people have mentioned more with the bypass so yes since I’m a quick eater I need this restrictions that this offer . And most of all time is limited.. I can’t wait. “There will be obstacles. There will be doubters. There will be mistakes. But with hard work, there are no limits.” —Michael Phelps

    Please send a Prayer

How awful!!! I can't even imagine. When I worked in a GI clinic I saw a few cases like this. That is why I decided to never consider bypass surgery. I will keep Jessica and her family in my prayers.

    Is it true?

I believe they can do the sleeve with the bypass just reroute the small intestines.
  8. Hi, not an expert. I did have bypass and am post menopausal, and have significant osteoarthritis. The pain is managed by continuous movement and the weight loss itself. I get steroid shots in the worst offenders, my knees. I would speak to your rheumatologist about pain management with shots as my mother and grandmother did. Vitamins are easy to keep up with if you just keep it a daily habit. The weight loss is slow (that could just be me) but my ability to move and keep moving has been so worth it! Rheumatoid arthritis is no joke and I had a friend loose sight in one eye because it traveled to her iris. Extra weight is one of many forms of inflation in the body. Working to control it has helped my severe asthma too. I kept weighing the odds and quality of life. My grandmother lost the weight and lived independently until 89. My mother didn’t change her lifestyle and died at 67 unable to do the things she enjoyed for the last seven years of her life. My decision was more clear cut. Only you know your delicate balance of pain tolerance and enjoyment of life, and how bad the arthritis can be. You probably have relatives that had RA. How did they get through life?
  9. Anyone ever post on the lapband talk forum in the lapband complications section? Is it just me or do you get rudeness from people when you post about complications? Almost like whatever reason you are having problems it's your own fault? I have kept my mouth shut and not responded to the rude ones but its getting old and I'm finding that each time it happens I want to get downright nasty back!

    Day 7 problem

strictures are pretty rare in sleeve patients (more common on bypass patients, but still, only about 5% of bypass patients get them) - although they're not unheard of. If it continues (after taking the advice of the people above), just let your clinic know.
  11. Not sure how different the sleeve surgery & bypass are. I had the bypass and was very sick for the 1st month. I couldn't eat, or drink anything without being nauseous. I had to go on a script of a nauseous patch. The 2nd month improved a little, every month after that has improved. I am now almost 6 months post op and doing very good. Keep in mind that everyone is different.
  12. I had gastric bypass 5-14-20....it took about 3 months for me to feel what I would consider “normal”. The soreness and fatigue was gone after 4-6 weeks. I had some depression after my surgery due to not feeling like I could participate in family functions bc everything in my family was centered around food. Also most of my family didn’t know I had WLS. So lots of factors (that were my choice) played into that. But as of today I am 9 months post-op and have lost 130 pounds! I have more energy and I am happier than I have ever been. ❤️ Congrats on your surgery!! Wishing you happiness and a speedy recovery!

    Amino Fuel

The product contains several Vitamins and amino acids. Serving size is 3 tablespoons. This contains 100 calories and 15 grams of Protein. So far, so good. Under other ingredients, the third item listed was fructose which is a sugar. The order of the ingredients is generally given by percentage contained in the produce. So it may have a high sugar content which might be a problem for RNY gastric bypass patients.

    Insurance

My surgeon submitted my information to my insurance company, My insurance sent it back stating that they needed a letter from my primary care physician. My primary care physician wrote a letter stating I needed the surgery. I was denied by my insurance company however my surgeon did a peer to peer with the insurance company. My surgeon called stating that they need another letter from my primary care physician stating that they she recommend the revision and the letter must have her signed signature. A little history I had the sleeve in 2015 and lost 30 pounds and have gained 30 plus back. Now I want the gastric bypass. Do you think the insurance company will now approve me.? My primary physician will submit a new letter on Monday and then my surgeon will submit the information again for approval. Anyone ever experience this before. My insurance company is APWU

Lawn work aka I better have lost 5 lbs!

I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass. One of my projects after surgery was to construct an underground shelter. As a result I moved a lot of gravel and cement landscaping blocks. So a couple years ago I moved 100,000 pounds of gravel by hand along with around 60,000 pounds of concrete blocks and then last year I moved about the same amount. After surgery, I found that I had a lot more stamina [ability to perform physical labor] than before surgery. I am 67 going on 68 years old and I developed the stamina of when I was in my 30's.

    The dangers of sleep apnea

Prior to my RNY gastric bypass surgery 3 years ago, I had sleep apnea. At night I would keep my wife awake all night long with my snoring. After surgery this condition went into remission and stayed there. I would wake up in the middle of the night and find my wife hovering over me. I asked her what she was doing. She said I was sleeping so quietly she was trying to find out if I was still alive. I came across an article today called Engineer in NJ Transit crash had undiagnosed sleep apnea, officials say that points to one of the dangers of sleep apnea. The article says that the 29 September 2016 commuter train crash that killed 1 and injured 108 people in Hoboken, New Jersey and also the 1 December 2013 commuter train crash that killed 4 and injured 63 people in New York may have been due to the conductors suffering from undiagnosed sleep apnea. I guess I always put sleep apnea in the box of snoring but I wonder how many lives are lost when drivers temporarily fall asleep at the wheel, or train conductors at the controls of the engine, or ship pilots at the helm. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/11/16/engineer-in-nj-transit-crash-had-undiagnosed-sleep-apnea-officials-say.html
  18. I am sorry that you are having a hard time when it comes to your weight loss. I am also a revision patient as well. I will keep you in my prayers and I wish you all the best.
  19. I stay in touch with a few folks from the Kaiser classes that I had to take as a prerequisite for being approved for the lapband surgery. There are a couple of people that had the bypass close to the same time that I had my banding that I was just communicating with. I've been feeling so frustrated lately with my weight being at a complete stand still over the past 2-3 weeks....but was actually pretty surprised that they both have been experiencing the exact same thing with the bypass! I know that with the bypass, you are supposed to lose much quicker and much more extreme. I have lost about 20 pounds since the band surgery..and both of them..same thing..as soon as they hit about 20 pounds after the bypass, they have been at a stand still as well. I've been changing my calories up and down to try and find the right amount as well as upping my exercising..but still nothing. I definitely see the difference in my clothes..but SHEESH...you would think the scale HAS to start moving SOMETIME! Anyway, the reason I brought that up, is that it sounds like this ugly early plateau might not just be something that people see with the banding.... One of my bypass friends said that she heard that most of the weight loss that people see is somewhere between 3-9 months out from the procedure... I'm sure HOPING I'll start seeing some movement SOMETIME soon! Anyone else hear this? That it starts to kick in more after about 3 months?

Need some help and advice, quick!

Hi, everyone! I need some advice from you guys relating to the gastric band. I am terrified of the gastric bypass and losing half of my intestines (well, not losing them just "bypassing" them), but my starting weight is 390 and the posts all state that the band will help you lose about 40-50% of your excess weight. That would only put me at 270 lbs post surgery after a year! how the heck am I supposed to get to 150??? that's crazy! I am trying to get informed more--I am supposed to have the surgery within the next 2 months. It seems like there are less complications than the bypass, but only 1/2 the weight loss. Any recommendations? (As a side note, I started at 420 lbs and am down to 390 after 6 weeks of a nutritional program that I am on). Help me out, guys!!! Newbie in NC
  21. So, I’m sitting in the hospital, one day post-op gastric bypass + gall bladder, and wondering how my experience has compared to others.. I have had a lot of nausea and some kind of acid reflux...lots of burping that is very acidic. I had the surgery Thursday afternoon and had a very rough night last night as I wasn’t able to get comfortable...so no sleeping. Now, today has been so much better. I’ve basically had zero pain throughout...just crazy nausea. I’ve started on clear liquids and the only problem is that I feel uncomfortably full after next to nothing...so now I’m worrying about hydration and how I’m ever going to get in 60 grams of protein a day!! So, I’d love to hear from others on your hospital experience and those early days post-op. Excited to be on the other side of this!
  22. Had my RNY- Bypass this morning at 10am. So far liquids are all doing down great and no issues with walking. I am however super tired and I have to be woken up every 4 min to sip my water. Gas pain is nonexistent as of right now but slight pressure in my belly but other than that no pain. I’m feeling pretty good about it all. :)

    I'm sooo hungry.. or HANGRY

I'm almost 4 weeks post Bypass and have not been experiencing any hunger issues, just the opposite actually. Months before surgery I gave up many things (e.g. alcohol, sweets, carbonated beverages, processed food...), which was difficult for the first few weeks but it helped curb cravings and start weight loss. This may be why post- surgery has been fairly easy thus far for me. Suggestions on "hunger" are to make sure you're getting enough fluids in each day and to take PPIs for a period of time after surgery (work with doc on exact dosage and timeframe). Good luck!
  24. I'm a lapband revision. BCBS Fed approved my lapband in 2/2011, port replacement in 3/2013, and lapband removal 11/2013. I just got approved to have the sleeve (surgery scheduled for March 14!!). However, I did have to go through the 3 month supervised diet, psych eval, and all pre-op tests again. I just got my surgery date!! March 14. . Any news, NewLife? Sent from my VS980 4G using the BariatricPal App

    Approvals with BCBS Federal

I think the surgeons office tries to collect sufficient information for approval process. I know with my revision my office want proof that I complied to previous surgery. Luckily i had all my post op nut visits with measurements and weigh ins. It was not a requirement but helped in the process.
