How did you pick your doctor?

Mine worked with my dad for over a year to try and save his leg before they ultimately amputated. I’m thoroughly convinced he saved my dad’s life. I actually met him at one of my dad’s post op appointments 2 years before I needed him. Fast forward to April 2019 and I need an appendectomy and he’s the surgeon I chose for that. At my post op he invited me to a bariatric seminar and he did my sleeve in December 2019. He’s also my surgeon for my RNY revision this coming Tuesday. I don’t think I could trust another surgeon with what he does.

Bariatric Weight Loss Major Turning Point Decision

Thank you for your quick reply. Hope all goes well with your upcoming bypass.
  3. Wow ... I am so happy I came back to a forum because I literally feel like your story mirrors mine . I read your story and teared up because I had been battling Esophagitis and everything that comes with the reflux for so long I thought it was only me . I am having a revision to gastric bypass on the 13th of March . I first wanted to do a revision to sleeve last year but when we realized how bad my Esophagitis was and reflux I decided the best choice for me was going to be bypass . I understand the apprehension with things like hairloss and such but I have prayed and mentally prepared myself for it.... for a person that had always used her full head of hair as a huge security blanket that was a big leap forward . It’s about healing and being healthier for my self , my daughter and my family . Let me Know your thoughts ! We are all in this together !

How did you pick your doctor?

I picked my sleeve surgeon because he was the president of the Mexican Bariatric Association and had done more than 3000 sleeves. I loved my sleeve and didn't want to revise to RNY, which is what the first surgeon I consulted said was the only choice to treat my GERD. My gastroenterologist referred me to my eventual surgeon, who had a lot of ideas about how he could address the GERD and still preserve my sleeve. As I was going through testing, though, we found some other conditions. I ultimately had RNY but at least I knew we had explored lots of other options. As for you, what surgery are you having? A sleeve is less technically demanding than RNY, but still you want somebody experienced operating on you. I'd go ahead and ask how many bariatric surgeries and what kinds they have done. Surgeons are used to people asking that question.

    Is anyone else as disappointed...

Well I struggled to lose weight for years until I had RNY bypass and now my whole metabolism has changed.. I no longer put on weight and I lost weight really well so I'd look into the bypass as it changes more than the sleeve?

You really need to log all your food and drink work out what you're eating.. Is it too much sugar or carbs or is it too much sodium? Are you drinking enough water? Are you sleeping properly? Or is your genes holding you back? Something is not right... I had bypass so that helped me I lost all 150+lbs and in maintenance now 9 months post op....

    Is anyone else as disappointed...

My case isn’t typical. I developed a hernia in March that has lead to some severe GERD, esophagitis and inflammation because of it. I’m actually having revision surgery this coming Tuesday to fix everything. I do agree with the others. While your surgeon and nutritionist may say 600 calories a day, try adding an extra 100-200 calories and see if that helps. Stalls happen a lot. We just have to figure out what works for us to break through them.

    Anyone for August 2020

Right now i am scheduled for august 28. August 13 is my preop class for post op nutrition. The 14 is my preop clearance with a walk in clinic because my pcp dipped back to another state to be near family during quarantine. The 24 is the preop with my surgeon. My egd is giving me some trouble (it said mild chronic gastritis inactive and there was still food in belly even though i didnt eat within the 6 hours) so i was sent for a gastric emptying study which was normal but i was told the surgeon requests pics from the study and also wanted a second preauth for the sleeve even though i have a preauth for bypass already. I was also called by pcp office staff and they told me the state was going to do a second round of covid shutdowns just isnt announced yet. I think, though its good for doctors to know things before surgery, its entirely been a pain in the ass with all the testing and i read in the patient packet they (the bariatric place) are wanting a chest xray and ekg (going to a walk in clinic mind you lol) as well as a physical for the preop clearance the 14. I think this would be far less complex if the bariatric place had all of this inhouse. I doubt it will all get done before surgery. Also another covid test on the 26th (had to have one for the egd).
  11. This is a really good question and thanks for the post and for the helpful replies. My Gastric Bypass Surgery is scheduled for 19th August and I have been thinking about this a lot. I know I will need a different approach to my old - eat till can't eat any more!

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Hi all, my first post here! I'm a little late to the party, but I had my RnY Gastric Bypass surgery a little less than two weeks ago. After some initial discomfort due to the anesthesia I've been struggling to get my protein shakes down. I've fortunately been able to eat full liquids starting my second week which has been an enormous relief- I never thought I could enjoy cottage cheese with a little bit of salt so much! I've been making an attempt to cook and prep my meals and limit canned/processed foods. My go-to's have been the aforementioned cottage cheese w/ salt and low fat greek yogurt with a homemade cherry 'jam' (cherries cooked down with a little splenda, lemon juice, water, and blended). I also made a caramelized onion & rosemary whipped ricotta dip, which turned out to be delicious and tastes richer than it actually is. I also attempted to make a 'mango lassi' style protein shake with some freeze-dried mango, greek yogurt, skim milk, and genepro. It turned out to be too much for my stomach to handle, but I hope to try it again down the line... I love food and cooking, and I also still love eating... which, in part, is how I got to my high weight. So far the surgery has helped me be satisfied with a 2 oz serving, but undoubtedly this will become more difficult for me in the future. I even saw it this week, when I was saving the best looking bite of my yogurt for last. I could have put down the yogurt a little earlier, but I wanted to finish my portion for that last bite. This is obviously a habit I want to break, so best bites first from now on. Looking forward to reading your stories! My surgery was late in July, so a lot of you must be close to 1 month out. How's it going?
  13. Regardless of surgery, you’ll need to have regular blood tests to ensure you’re getting all your nutrients in. I had sleeve surgery & gave up taking vitamins 7 months ago when I began maintenance with my surgeon & dietician’s knowledge (they made me so nauseated I wasn’t eating). I had bloods taken at 3 months & 3 weeks ago & all my levels are very good. I make sure I’m eating a balanced diet of protein, vegetables, fruit & a small amount of multi or whole grains & dairy. However, it doesn’t matter which surgery you have, for you to be successful, you will always need to be conscious of the foods you are eating. Nutrients are absorbed at different stages as food passes through our digestive system. My understanding is that because bypass surgery changes the normal digestive path, malabsorption can be a concern. However, we are all different & there are sleevers with absorption issues & bypass patients without any. Same with dumping & with discovering foods your new tummy may or may not like anymore. Hair loss is because of the shock of surgery to your body & your initial reduced caloric intake (your natural hair loss cycles are accelerated) not the type of surgery. Some people find their hair changes texture too. It does grow back. And don’t waste money on products that supposedly help to stop the loss, regrow or strengthen your hair - they won’t during this stage. Just be patient. Good luck with whichever surgery you decide to have.
  14. I had a lapband and had a pretty similar experience. I lost 145 lbs and was doing great - except I'd wake up choking on acid and throwing up/sliming was an almost daily experience. I tried various fill levels and any amount caused this. So eventually I was unfilled entirely and put back on all my weight. After a few years I finally decided to do surgery and I decided on gastric bypass because my surgeon shared that many people who heartburn/reflux before will have it worse with Sleeve. I had RNY 12/31/19 and have had a really great experience - better than even the early days with the band. I've had just a little bit of heartburn even with RNY, but Dr has me taking some meds and thinks it will resolve (technically still healing). I'm only a little over 7 months out but so far no regrets. Oh! And I have dumped exactly 3 times. I can have fruit and even 2 glasses of red wine and I'm fine. I even had a bite or two of a sweet and I was fine. But, I tried a margarita and had less than 1/3 of it - dumped. And I had a piece of birthday cake and dumped (2 times --- sometimes I take a bit to learn). To me that's a good thing. Dumping is very unpleasant, and as a result my desire to eat sweets is really dampened which is good!
  15. you can eat anything that you can tolerate and like @catwoman7 said not everyone dumps with bypass.

    Anyone for August 2020

I'm new here. My bypass is scheduled for Aug 13. I'm in the metro Atlanta area and a mom of 3.i have a hard time keeping up with them. I'm on liquid diet now and very hungry. My ultimate goal is to ride a roller coaster. Or all the roller coasters. Or go to a water park and not be embarrassed. I have a dress from my 24th birthday. If I ever get back to it, I will cry. Anyone else nearby or having the same surgery or day? Wouldn't it be crazy to find someone at the same hospital at the same time? 😜
  17. In 2013 I requested a DS. My surgeon explained he does the surgery in two parts. He does the VSG first and we see if that produces the desired results. If not, the revision surgery is available. My two surgeries were almost 7 years apart. VSG produced good results by 1 year post OP then I regained weight. I believe my insurance required 5 years between weight loss surgeries. Usually the revision surgery needs to be medically necessary due to high BMI, acid reflux or comorbidities.
  18. the first foot or so of your small intestine is bypassed. That's the area where certain vitamins are absorbed by the body - whether from food or vitamin pills. So we have to take vitamin pills (which give you much larger doses than you could get from food) to make up for that.

Thank you for your quick reply. I am already taking them in large amounts. I thought that most Vitamins should come from real food. I do not understand when they say that if you switch to a Bypass your body looses Vitamins with real food.

    having trouble breaking 400 calories

No, I wasn't hungry at all. I had my sleeve done 7 years ago. Just did the revision to modified DS this year. The liquid diet reset my stomach and I was surprised to feel full with such small portions.
  21. yes - that is true. That's why you have to take vitamins for the rest of your life. But you'll have to do it with the sleeve as well. My clinic has the bypass patients and the sleeve patients on the same vitamin regimen. as long as you keep on top of your vitamins, deficiencies are rare.

Bariatric Weight Loss Major Turning Point Decision

Can I please ask you about the issue related to the Bypass in terms of lack of vitamins and minerals? Is it true that your body gets less vitamins and minerals with a Bypass?
  23. no - I just had bypass. I didn't have it until five years ago, and the band was already going out of favor then (sleeve has largely replaced it). I went with the bypass since I had GERD prior to surgery, to my surgeon recommended we do that instead of the sleeve. I've been really happy with it.
