Gastric Bypass Peeps: Would you do it again?
MeliE82 replied to Barbwired's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I know exactly that feeling ! I have decided to go with bypass because of the reflux issues I have and I have Esophagitis as well , I had initially wanted to revise to sleeve but after getting my Esophagitis diagnosis from my gastroenterologist, and with the research I did , it didn’t make sense to me to go with the sleeve . It took a lot of research , talking with a counselor about me weighing my options to have made the decision to go with bypass . I am having surgery on 8/13/2020 . I am looking forward to this new step in my journey . But I’m fully committed and ready for it ! -
I’m going from a sleeve to bypass in a couple of months. Almost no iron , lowBs, low calcium. Taking high doses of calcium and Bs, but will be having iron infusions in 2 weeks. Pills and shots aren’t enough. Ask you doctor about infusion, maybe you’ll only need a couple, then back to shots or pills. Try to take care of yourself, because you can’t take care of others if you’re out of commission! God bless you!

I’ve had a band removed, changed to a sleeve 5 years ago. Gained my weight back. I lost a total:of 30 pounds with the gastric sleeve! I finally found out the problem at Mayo last month. The doctor (not at Mayo) didn’t cut my stomach back enough. It’s shaped like a pear instead of a banana. It’s relatively small at the top and bottom, but large in the middle! I could eat an entire plate of foood as soon as I could eat solids again. I told my doc about it and he said my lack of weight was all my own fault, but I kept explaining I didn’t have any restriction. He never did a CT to check the size of my new stomach because he said he never made mistakes! Finally after going to Mayo I have found that most sleeves (not all) only work for a while, then can expand. They also said the best permanent solution to weight loss is bypass. I was so angry for quite a while at the doctor who did my sleeve; it was so painful, but I’ll be having bypass in a couple of months which I probably should have had instead of the band! I don’t think anyone even does lap band anymore! So I’ve lived and learned. Please talk with your doctor, get a CT, and best of luck with your sleeve. And don’t let your doctor browbeat you into thinking it’s your fault!

I’m currently on my second round of pre-op diet as I had a VSG in December 2019 and am having a revision to RNY in a few days but over the last year I’ve amassed quite a collection of protein powder and drinks. I’ve gone through 2 other 2lb tubs of the syntrax nectars and I’ve lost count of the protein shakes. But yeah, I may be hoarding protein powder and shakes. Anyone else do this? I need to know I’m not alone. 😂

Reached intermediate WL goal!
California Guy posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I just passed my intermediate goal weight of 208 lbs. I'm celebrating this milestone today. My final goal weight is set at a realistic 190 lbs. The intermediate goal of 208 pounds is significant since that is my lowest weight in over 20 years. Also, with a BMI under 30, it is the weight I am no longer obese. I am classified as overweight. Results came so fast. I weighed 300 lbs. at the beginning of the year. It has only been 2 1/2 months since my revision SADI-S surgery. I cleaned out my closet since I couldn't wear any of my clothes anymore. Finding nutritious food I love to eat has made this so easy. Nearly all my meals have been prepared at home. I created a set of original recipes. Today's lunch was ground turkey meat tacos. Dinner will be stir fry cashew chicken. Two factors that motivated me to make these changes are resolved with my weight loss. My blood pressure is now always at a healthy level. Pain in my hip joint has diminished by over 90%. -
Anyone for August 2020
Lychee replied to MotivatedMomma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi I'm having my surgery on 19th too and wish you all the best with your surgery. I'm quite calm at the moment and a bit fed up with the pre-op diet but it's not for long hey? I am in London England and having my surgery so that I can continue with the things I love. I play tennis a lot - think I'm addicted - and a bit of golf and as I've got heavier its getting more and more difficult. I have been a yoyo dieter all my life and have had enough of it. I will be 60 in September. I weigh about 250lbs at the moment and am having a gastric bypass (I have reflux so sleeve was ruled out). I decided to go ahead with the surgery in June so I haven't been waiting too long. All the posts help and I look forward to hearing from those who have had their surgery in the last couple of days. -
I work in healthcare and I've seen some horror stories up close regarding the malabsorption and complications after a bypass. I'd rather avoid the risk. I know those cases were likely the exception but still. They were pretty bad. I don't want to risk that type of situation. I know all of the procedures have risks associated, I'm just trying to mitigate those risks where I can. I know I really need to just talk with the surgeon but that appt is two weeks out and I'm really having a hard time not delving into this as much as I can before then. Impatient would be an understatement. Sent from my Pixel 2 using BariatricPal mobile app

Lap band vs sleeve...help
catwoman7 replied to Blyss's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I really think with your reflux issues, even though they're occasional, you should be considering the bypass. But if you are dead set against malabsortive procedures and will only consider lapband or sleeve, then I would go with the sleeve. The lapband is an old surgery that is rarely done anymore because of all the problems with it. Many people who had it back in its heyday having since converted to sleeve or bypass. -
Weight gain after sleeve
Hopefulmommy44 replied to Hopefulmommy44's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well...it took me 2 yrs to lose that 40 pounds. I had a lot of ups and downs, but when I was rediagnosed with DM and HTN, I knew I had to get serious. I won't say that bypass is completely off of the table, it will just be harder to take care of my self with a 4 and 5 yr old. Most of it is fear, that I will have this drastic surgery, and still gain the weight back. Sorry for the sob story. Thank you for the encouragement. 😊 -
Is anyone else as disappointed...
James Marusek replied to Luv2cruz's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There are different types of weight loss surgery. The two that predominates are : sleeve and RNY gastric bypass. They are different types of surgery and produce different types of results. In RNY weight loss happens very quickly and almost effortlessly. In sleeve, weight loss is slower and takes quite a bit of effort to stay on track. But sleeve patients can achieve the same result in weight loss as RNY patients. But the speed of weight loss is not the main issue. The main issue is that once you achieve weight loss, keeping the regain under control. What really matters is the success of maintaining the weight loss long term 5 or 10 years down the road. THAT IS WHAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT! ----------------------------------------------------------- According to the rules of BariatricPal: Weight loss surgery “bashing” is absolutely prohibited. This include, but is not limited to, statements that a specific type of weight loss surgery is: Bad or wrong Easier than another type of weight loss surgery or “cheating” when someone is trying to lose weight Out of date or obsolete Doomed to failure In addition, “bashing” of individuals is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, statements that a person is: Lazy for choosing one type of weight loss surgery over another Unprepared for or undeserving of weight loss surgery because of Deserving of complications or disappointing weight loss because of their choice of weight loss surgery Please abide by these rules. _______________________________ I am locking this tread because it has deviated from the rules. -
I had gastric bypass on 5/14 and as of this morning I have lost 54 pounds! A total of 64 pounds if you include the weight lost before my surgery...my issue is that people are starting to notice and ask questions...I have no regrets for having my surgery nor am I ashamed of the surgery...but when people ask how I lost the weight I freeze and tell them that I’ve been eating healthier and exercising regularly (which is true). But then after the conversation is over I feel guilty for not being 100% honest about how the weight is really coming off. I know this is my business and I don’t owe anyone an explanation, but I’ve always prided myself on my honesty. So this is new territory for me because I feel like I’m lying to people. A few friends, coworkers and close family members know about my surgery. so I feel like with so many people knowing, it’s bound to come out eventually...and I’m nervous to get called out on my lies. I guess what I’m asking is if anyone else has kept their surgery a semi-secret? And if this guilty feeling will go away?

The bypass is different there's alot of research about the bypassing of intestines that resets your set point and the malabsorption and such and yes I did a preop as most people do before surgery; if I include the preop then it took a total of 7 months to lose 157lbs and I've kept that off now over 3 months It is possible but it takes alot of commitment and hard work. -

You do realize that the sleeve does this too, right? You tout that bypass is the end all be all...but here I am with my "subpar" surgery, down 105 pounds in 7 months (JUST from surgery, not a lengthy strict pre-op diet like you did, you conveniently leave that part out a lot) -
Lap band vs sleeve...help
New&Improved replied to Blyss's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Well there's more than just sleeve these days; but you have to ask yourself a few questions. How much weight do you need to lose? Do you suffer from reflux or gerd? Do you have diabetes? 45.7 is quite high I would look at the bypass or even DS -
❤My Revision Story❤
MamT replied to GreenTealael's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks so much for sharing and following up after a year. Your posts have really helped to calm my nervous feelings about my upcoming surgery. I had the sleeve in 2011 and now have multiple problems that can only be resolved by having the bypass. -
I don't think you have anything to lose by continuing to lose weight without revision surgery. It's definitely not impossible, people lose large amounts of weight without any surgery - and you already have the sleeve. Surgery isn't a magic bullet and either way, you're going to need to put in the work around nutrition and exercise. Is there any concern that your sleeve has lost all of its restriction? Honestly, it sounds like you are doing really well - you're already a third of the way back to where you want to be. How long did it take you to lose the 40 lbs? If you are still struggling in 6-12 months, you can always reassess and consider revision again. But given how well you are doing, there's no harm in continuing your weight loss journey without the expense and pain of another surgery - particularly when you have young kids to look after. That's just my two cents (from a random person on the internet). Do whatever is right for you! Wishing you all the best either way! xx

I am relatively healthy. No hypertension. Not diabetic. No sleep apnea. Only on meds for depression. Occasionally I take something for heartburn but it's not an every day issue for me. I'm doubtful that I would want a bypass because I'm afraid of the malabsorptive procedures in general. The surgeon I'm going to still does lapbanding. I plan to ask about both and see where he leads me. Sent from my Pixel 2 using BariatricPal mobile app

Re-sleeve to Bypas
carlacv replied to Rocky4521's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had the sleeve 9/2016 and 3 years later I developed a hernia. went to my surgeon and did some testing. was told that I needed the redo but I would need to get the gastric bypass. Surgery was delayed twice due to covid and I was just released from the hospital today. I feel great, sore but great. I had surgery on Monday 8/3 and my surgeon is very conservative so he kept me till today. He showed me pictures of before and after. I have my follow up on Monday. Let me me know if I could help out -
Re-sleeve to Bypas
New&Improved replied to Rocky4521's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So irresponsible if the surgeon didn't advise you that sleeve will make GERD worse!! Bypass is your only option -
I’m going through this now and I’m a nervous wreck. I had the sleeve done in 2011 and thought it would help my GERD and hernia. Well my hiatal hernia is much worse and so is the GERD. I thought I could just have hernia surgery but that’s not possible after having had the sleeve. My doctor said the only way to fix both is to do a bypass.

Hey there everyone. I had my gastric bypass today and it went well. No pain at the moment just some tenderness in the abdomen. My procedure was four hours. Going to ask tomorrow for the details. Nothing by mouth until tomorrow. I'm ready for the next part of my journey! Sent from my SM-A102U using BariatricPal mobile app

Bariatric Weight Loss Major Turning Point Decision
ebbii0927 replied to Hope to Resolve's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
For the issues you are having it sounds like the full bypass is really the only option that makes any sense. The sleeve could make the acid reflux worse. Also you probably won't get the desired results with the sleeve because of confounding factors Eddy Blaine Brown II -
Hi everybody, A little background info: Had vsg in Fall 2012, lost 120 lbs, felt amazing! I got married, had a baby in Fall 2014, gained weight. Had another baby in Summer 2016, gained even more weight. I sought the advice of my bariatric surgeon, he recommended full bypass, and gave me a goal to lose 15 lbs, before he would schedule. Well, I've lost 40 lbs. I feel like I should be able to get back to my goal weight (165lbs) without having a bypass...but the task of losing another 80 pounds seems almost impossible. Has anyone on here, lost that much weight, without additional surgery? Thanks for reading.
