Considering... has anyone been in my boat!?
mrs w replied to lakiaki's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a BMI just over 29 and am getting sleeved in Mexico on January 11th. Like others, I'm not morbidly obese, but if I don't do something soon, in 5 or 10 years I'm sure I will be. -
Post surgery food addictions and surgery blues
Ray92 replied to Ray92's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am now 2 weeks post op and the food grieving does get better! I still think about it sometimes but not as often. It gives me great comfort to remember that this will all be over soon. As for the age thing, I am 23 and I think that doing it at this age was the best decision I have ever made. We still have years of life ahead of us and why drag along with us all that excess weight. Honestly it would be exhausting. I want to have kids one day and be able to play with them without huffing and puffing. Furthermore, our bodies now are capable of handling the excess weight because we are at our prime. Who knows what could happen 10 years from now? I definitely don't want to know. Our bodies will not rejuvenate in the future as they do now. We should actually feel extremely lucky that we had this opportunity at a young age. I am sure there are many who would have jumped at the chance to do this in their 20s if it was available. Stay strong! I just try my best to preoccupy myself with other things. I also watch a bizarre amount of dance videos on YouTube to keep my motivation up. Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk -
I officially have lost 50 pounds since surgery 10/21/15!!! I'm super excited but my clothing inventory is decreasing, when did everyone go shopping? I'm scared to buy anything and have to give it to someone a week later lol

I'm 45 with 19 & 21 year old sons both at college. Had to get a little dog when they both left. Makes me feel like the little old lonesome lady talking to my dog!

Wow, great question! And a great answer! As someone who is within 10 lbs of goal, this is fascinating. I'm still going for the goal, but it makes one wonder.....

That happened to me twice in the last 4 years. Months of my time wasted and major expenses for my co pays, plus all the time I missed from work for all the appointments. Each time it happened, I switched insurance during open enrollment at work and started all over again with a brand new doctor. Third time was a charm. Found a doctor who knew how to advocate for me and got everything approved and my surgery will be Nov 1, 2017. Sent from my XT1635-01 using BariatricPal mobile app

Anyone 5'10-6' tall?
kjrny2013 replied to heather200202's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Being 5'9" my goal is 170-175. I was a size 10/11 last time I was that small. Big boned, wide shoulders and hips here too. I would not be upset if I end up at 160-165 though. Who knows, maybe I will end up at the low end of the charts for my height. -
How many days till you felt good?
butterfly2014 replied to Comeflywithme's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It took me about 10 days before I stopped having the gas, acid reflux and any type of pain or discomfort. You will get there, each day gets easier. Wishing you a speedy recovery! -
I know this has been presented a million times (hyperbole appropriate). At the same time, I am a week out from my monthly dr. visit and am concerned. My goal from this post is to get your advice: - Is this something I should fix by altering my eating habits even more? - Is this something I should head to my dr. for immediately? I am currently getting sick often. On the weekend, usually once or twice a day. During the week, usually three times. It happens when I eat the following foods/foods of similar consistency: 1/2 fork of cooked chicken breast 1/2-1 hard boiled egg 2 bites of a hamburger patty, 10 minutes to eat both bites Ground beef/turkey/chicken - any I am not having any trouble at all eating the following foods: single serving mac and cheese whole tomatoes with salt/pepper Desserts (cupcake, no icing texture) I have avoided rice, most pastas, real breakfasts, Cereal, etc. I have been eating a lot of Greek yogurt, Peanut Butter, milk, turkey rolls, cheese sticks, soups. I am eating around 1200 calories a day, have lost 22 pounds (10 in the last month with the LB finally working!), and am seeing success---I also feel great! The daily/weekly throwing up combined with a vile stomach virus/the flu last week has me incredibly nervous that I'm going to mess up my surgery. It seems that any hard Protein I try to eat, ends up making me immediately sick. Any advice? JB

So everyone's body is different which means it's going to process it differently. Some ppl take forever to get pregnant(years) or it can be the next month. As for me I was on it for 8 yrs and gained 10-15 lbs for every yr I was on it. It is also one of the reasons I have hell losing weight. I've been off the shot for 2 yrs now and still not pregnant. Although we decided to stop trying in jan when I started this journey. The only up side to the depo was no period Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using the BariatricPal App

7 Days out and looking to advance my diet.
Martha Parker-mcneal replied to PaulVT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know you are eager to get started. however I would stick with the dr and nut suggestion. it sure cant hurt you to wait and it might hurt to push it. the tummy takes time to heal and we need to allow for that. just my option I am 10 years out and have never had a moments trouble with ulcers or pouch stretching and I truly believe it is because I follow the directions of my support team. best of luck to you. so glad you are doing so well. keep up the great progress -
7 Days out and looking to advance my diet.
PaulVT posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am one week out from RNY and I am doing great. No pain in last 5 days. Tolerating all fluids well. Feel a little twinge of pain if I go above 3/4 cup. I was on full liquid pudding/soups etc.. the day after surgery before discharge. I have been on the full liquid diet for 7 days. Every hospital is different but the next step for me is soft diet in another week and then lifetime diet two weeks later. So here is the question. How fast did people advance to the soft diet (eggs, ground meats, seafood, canned fruit and veg etc...) I am thinking about starting at the 10 day mark (4 days early). As I said I am tolerating everything really well. I have lost 28lbs since pre-op diet (my pre-op diet was 1000 calorie diet of solid foods). 14 since surgery on 11/29.- 1 reply

I have UHC and had already met my $500 deductible so did not have to do that. I started this process on 7/31 and so far the tests, visits and bills for anesthesia and biopsy from endo total $11,300. I have paid around $400.00 out of pocket for co-pays. My insurance cover hospital at 90-10 up to $1,000 out of pocket. The hospital give you a price based on what they estimate the insurance will cover. I have heard and won't know for sure until I have my surgery, that the hospital where I am having my surgery, will keep any money you have paid for procedures based on their estimate and then apply it toward your surgery bill. My endoscopy was over $7,000.00 for the procedure, but I had a bravo chip put in to monitor esophagus acid. There was a $500,00 plus bill for anesthesia, my doctor's fee was about $675 and there was a biopsy charge of about $350.00. I believe that I will have about another $500 out of pocket and then should be good. If I do not have surgery before the end of the year, I get to start over in 2014 with a deductible. Next year it may not be $500 but $1,000 and the coverage might be less. It all depends on the contract my employer works out with the insurance company. I am really hoping that I am able to have surgery in 2013.

Hi Everyone, I had my band on 3/15/10. I lost 7 lbs. the first week and 1.5 the second week, and gained 2 lbs back. I was so hungry by the end of week one I started soft foods by the second week. The second week i could drink 12 oz. and now I can drink 16 oz. Has anyone else had these issues, if so, what did you do to get back on track. My first fill is not until April 26th. I can't eat nearly what I could before surgery and seems like I should be at least losing a couple lbs. weekly. I am walking more, but not a lot. I'm trying to slowing build to longer distances. Any input would be appreciated. :bored:

Protein, you need more protein! Add a protein shake to your day it just might put you up there. You need your weight times .3 to get the daily protein required and I go the extra mile and try and go 5-10 grams over that. And don't forget you do need some fat in your diet. We tend to cut way back on fat, but there are healthy fats and it keeps your skin and hair healthier. Also lots of Omega 3's, fish and eggs are a good source, they are very good for your hair. My old nursing days coming back! LOL Good luck!

I am weighing in at 209 now. I feel like my weight loss is SOOOO SLLOOOOWWW. I'm down 34 lbs overall, but just 24 lbs since surgery, which was 2.5 months ago. At my 2 month check-in my doc said he was perfectly happy with my weight loss, so I guess I should be too. I'm averaging 10 lbs/month. On the bright side though, i went clothes shopping yesterday How much more fun is clothes shopping now!?!?! I love it! I hit the clearance racks at Walmart and came away with six t-shirts at $3/each. Some 1X, some 2X, but I used to be in men's 2XL/Women's 3XL. Since I live in AZ, t-shirts are a necessity year-round. Bought 2 new hoodies that were both in regular sizes - not plus sized! This was so exciting. The jeans I bought a few weeks ago are getting nice and loose, and those are 2 sizes down from where I started. Yep, clothes shopping is now fun

Exercise Schmexercise (or Liar, Liar, Plants for Hire)
MarilynJ6354 replied to erikaw1971's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've learned not be pay attention to the scale as much as I was. I might not be losing as much as I was right after the surgery, but I am losing inches and it shows. Finding an exercise program that fits YOU is the most important thing. I hate walking the dogs in this heat so I joined a gym that is between work and home. I stop on the way home from work 1-2 times a week and on Saturday and Sunday I am at the gym at 7AM...get it over with ASAP! I started out with the basic Planet Fitness membership for just $10 a month but upgraded to $20 a month and now I can go to any one in any city, plus I can tan if I want. Some say I have become a gym groupie. Truthfully? I HATE working out but I made a commitment to myself to do everything the doctor told me to do and I am doing that, whether I like it or not. The reason I got into this weight mess is because I lied to everyone and myself about what I was and wasn't doing to lose weight. Be honest with yourself and take control. It isn't easy but the benefits are worth it. -
BANDED 11/29/10, ONLY LOST 10 LBS....WTH...
vivacious123 replied to fusionbell's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on 11/30, only a day later than you, and lost 10 lbs. pre-op and 20 post. I have been stuck at the same weight for about 6 weeks, have only had one fill so I am hoping with my next one I will get more restriction. I am frustrated as well but I think that's my own fault. I really haven't been exercising with any regularity and not sticking to the plan, so I am resolving to start over and get with the program. -
Worst dieting experience EVER...
Jachut replied to celticdreamer's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I havent had an experience that has really stressed or traumatised me mentally but I did Atkins once for six weeks. My god, that was the most horrid experience of my life. I found it a disgusting way to eat. It really turned my stomach, the food was so revolting I didnt WANT to eat it which is why I lost so much weight. All I could envisage was my arteries filling up with saturated animal fat. I looked awful, I felt disgusting - my skin broke out, my hair was lank and greasy and I looked exhausted and grey. I had no energy, I felt sick the entire time - and I didnt even do the induction phase, my mum wouldnt let me. I was put on it by a nutritionist at the age of 16 when I broke my hip because I was 84kg at the time, which was about five kgs overweight for my height. I lost about 10kgs in that six week period but it wasnt healthy weight, it looked awful, it all went from round my neck and I looked gaunt, I got down to 73 kg which is only a bit more than I am now, but I looked about 10 years older than I do now. After I started getting argumentative, agressive and well, psychotic, my mother made me stop. I put on 14kg in 3 weeks. Nobody will ever convince me that Atkins is healthy, sane or a good way to eat. -
Hi Im Bob. Im 10 days out(March 10th) and already down 32#. I dont know how! I havent done anything out of the ordinary, wait, yes I have. Ive gone from probably 4-5000 cal. a day to around 1000 if Im lucky. I went for my checkup with my surgeon yesterday and before I got on the scale I told her I would be so dissappointed if I didnt lose(I expected around 10#), I couldnt believe it when the scale said 311.1#. My preop weight was 343#. Im so excited, this is enough motivation!!! I havent exercised, at least not anything other than playing with my kids in the yard now that its nice outside. The dr. told me it would slow down, 1-2# per week. Im happy with that and I understand when I eat normal foods again it will slow down but Im wondering if I can be one of the few who lose 100 plus in by next spring (2011). Im planning on joining Snap-fitness when Im able to resume exerciseing! Thanks, good luck to all!

It's perfectly normal to be a little nervous. However if you really know in your heart of hearts this is the only way then take the plunge. The post-op dieting, especially in those early days is not fun, but is completely doable. Pain is not a guarantee. I had NONE. You will be able to eat your favorite foods again, you'll just eat them in smaller portions. Best of all you'll get the chance to live a healthier life. I honestly wish I had done this 10 years ago.

I chose sleeve over band and gastric with lap band i didnt want foreign object in my body and gastric rny scares me of dumping syndrome etc... Cant believe im going to be sleeved in 19 days
-
Just to tell you a quick story... I knew I was going down the Sleeve route at the beginning of this year abou had saved up all my work PTO. I figured 2-3 weeks of recovery should do. I had no idea if have some 10-15 doctor visits and procedures in the three months prior to surgery (which is in 2 days I might add). My insurance demanded 90 days of nutrition consultation (Aetna) and the surgeon required no less than 10 different tests and procedures. This bummed me out because o get like I was getting nickel and dimed to death... But being this close to someone having 5 instruments being poked into me and pulling things out of me.... ...damn right I'm happy they have 35 pictures of the inside of my stomach, know what I ate the day before and that I have a mole to the right of my belly button! I don't want any "gotchas" they didn't know about once they start opening me up. Hopefully your insurance can cover a lot of the battery of tests you will need and that you hit your max "out of pocket" or come close to it by the time you get to surgery day. My max out of pocket is $2,000 and I'm almost there. I think when it's all said and done, I'm only going to be owing the surgeon $250 due to capping. Best of luck to you! Get your check list done early! That way nothing delays you and you can better plan your time away from work.
