Day three after Gastric sleeve and i"m haing trouble staying awake.

Hi everyone! I finally did it, after chasing this surgery and fighting with insuracne I had t 3/19/24. I"m on day three, and I'm so tired Im' napping more than I"m awake sipping. Did anyone else experience this? Hot long will it take to east up and I'll feel awake agaIn? I assume it has to do with the liquid diet and very little calories and the array of pills they have me on. -
I have hit my goal of 140 the end of February a d went into maintenance. I have since lost 4 more lbs, down to 136. I know there will be fluctuations and I'm okay with that. But I'm still consistently losing (3lbs in last 10 days). I've upped my calorie intake and still... What's going on? I don't want to lose much more, I'm already a size 2, but I don't want to overdo it either for the sake of not losing.

Its pretty insane! I have upped my calories, just making sure that I hit my protein and water goals. I eat 50g of carbs and 30-50g of fat. Its all "healthy fats" but its falling off a lot quicker than I anticipated! Which I guess is a good thing? I saw you comment about just trusting my body and letting it do it thing but I adjusted my goal to 170 that puts me in the "normal" BMI section. I am trusting the process, but its sus LOL We both are killin it!

I posted this elsewhere on the forum but I thought I'd put it here in case you didn't see it. This is what one of my typical days looks like at 4 months post-op. My personal macro goal is 120-150 grams of Protein a day, under 50 total carbs, and 100 grams of fat. Also, I can't tolerate any raw fruit at the moment. And calories are not relevant for DS patients because we malabsorb most fat and a good chunk of our protein... 8 am: Premier Protein Cafe Latte shake 9 am: Ratio Keto vanilla Yogurt with 2 tablespoons of toasted coconut chips, 1 tablespoon of keto nut granola, and 1 tablespoon freeze dried strawberries 12 noon: 1/4 cup roasted Spaghetti Squash, 1/4 cup of ricotta cheese, 1/4 cup of a beef bolognese sauce 2 pm: Cafe Macchiato with espresso and 4 oz Fairlife Protein Milk 3 pm: 2 mozzarella cheese sticks, 2 mini baby cucumbers and 4 cherry tomatoes 6 pm: Roasted chicken leg and thigh quarter, 1/3 cup of vegetable Soup 9 pm: Homemade Keto banana Walnut Dark chocolate Muffin Total Macros: 150 grams of protein (yay!!), 43 grams total carbs, 97 grams of fat, 1634 calories. -

Hello ChunkCat. I don’t do Facebook but thanks for the suggestion. I am actually thinking that if eating bad is what causes the side effects and eating good does not it may be just want I need to keep myself on track. I need to definitely meet with the dietician a couple times to learn about the simple vs complex carbs and other macro stuff. I only focused on calories and protein post sleeve and I’m sure that was half of my issue of why I gained it back. Do you have to take a lot of vitamins post SADI or is it just a multi and calcium like the sleeve. -

Hi ShoppGirl, I replied to you in the DS forum. You'll probably find the answers you need in the Facebook group I'm in. It says it is for the Duodenal Switch, but we also have plenty of SADI patients in the group and we have veterans of both surgeries in there. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1799552573392212 I highly suggest joining that group and posting your questions. Regarding gas, yes, the SADI can have gas issues if you eat too many simple carbs. And eating too much junk food may make your bathroom visits rather unpleasant. I had the DS done about 4.5 months ago and I don't usually have any gas issues and my bathroom visits are pretty normal except my stools are pale colored now due to the fat malabsorption (perfectly normal). But I stay below 50 total carbs per day and eat about 120 grams of protein a day and about 100 grams of fat. With the SADI or DS surgery you are more focused on your macros than calories because we malabsorb a portion of everything but simple carbs. If you keep your carbs low after the SADI you will lose weight better and maintain weight better...and you should minimize the side effects. You'd also want to stay away from sugar alcohols and you might find that some foods digest differently, like lettuce or other leafy greens. Usually most SADI or DS patients learn within the first year what their trigger foods are and learn to eat them at home at night or not at all. -
I have all way eaten by the guidelines. Have done very well with the weight loss . So I have come to conclusion this will be a life time battle of gaining weight unfortunately, I regret wishing and getting something that would greatly improve my life. Have I added protein drinks, no I wouldn’t able to leave the house. But I eat proteins all day . Chicken chicken chicken . Cottage cheese. Veggies ect. one cup at a time several times a day. The past few months I have added a whole bag of chips that I can eat thru out the day on top of my healthy meals. Chips is 2000 calories a day. 14 grams of protein. Saturated fats 15 grams . Carbs 208 . Im doing the opposite of guidelines . Blood work is all normal. Should I have such a restriction 5 years out.? I wake in the middle of the nite to eat, I’m so hungry. Yes stress plays a role in weight . I have a pretty good life;)

the malabsorption from it also helps - you won't absorb all the calories you eat (or the nutrients, either, so keeping on top of your supplements will be more important than ever..). I know some people with the DS get really gassy (and sometimes get loose stools) if they eat too many carbs - not sure if that's an issue with the SADI or not.

Has anyone looked into the lower calorie options in the factor75 meals. They are not cheap but they are prepared but they are fresh and they have vegan and keto options as well. I assume this would be an option to consider for those in maintenance for busy nights but I’m not the greatest at reading labels. I am currently looking into converting to SADi and just want to get started with something while I do my research and the insurance process (I was sleeved 3/9/21 and gained the weight back). I never did learn to understand all the macros and stuff the first time around which I’m sure contributed to my regain. I’m am just curious if anyone who understands all that has researched them and has any feedback about them. -
February 2024 Surgery Buddies?

Had my 4-week post-op appointment with my dietician today. She wants me to start aiming for 80g protein and 800 calories per day. Currently I'm averaging closer to 65g and 600 calories. We'll see how it goes this week! -
At the 6 month mark, I was eating between 6-700 calories a day and I noticed I was slowing to 1 pound per week, which was still good, but then I bumped up to around 1000 calories a day the last three weeks. I have lost 3.2 per week the last two weeks. So not sure if eating more helped, but eating more (which is hard to do without eating junk) seems to have helped.

Yes, it will pass (though they are still frustrating & upsetting) but it doesn’t necessarily mean your weight loss is over. I lost another 11kgs (24lbs) in about another year after I reached goal. And many others will tell you the same. While they lost the bulk of their weight in the first 6-12 months, their weight loss continued very slowly for another 6-12 months or more. So it’s not over until it’s over. My surgeon & his colleague also suggested I increase my calories when I was dropping below goal. I said I can only eat what I can eat. My dietician made a couple of suggestions like adding full cream milk powder to any milk based drink or dish. I tried it but found it very sweet. Over time, I was able to eat more both in volume & calories & was eating a wider variety of food sources just like I had along the whole way until my loss stopped at about 1300 calories. I eat about 1500/1600 now & maintain at basically the same weight. Maybe touch base with your dietician for some ideas or things you can swap in much like @ms.sss suggested. Remember to celebrate the weight you have lost & every pound you lose next even if it takes weeks to lose it. You got this.

700 calories is not enough but that is easy to fix. Check in with your dietician for suggestions. Add a protein bar and a few nuts over the day or even a tube of yogurt. Small snacks.

I personally would do as your surgeon recommended. Perhaps they want you to increase your overall calorie intake at 6 months? Mine at 6 months is 800 so close to yours, there is documentation that the body does go into starvation mode and will stall out and hold onto what weight there is for "self preservation" darn bodies don't understand we're trying to become healthier! That being said, a stall is a stall and not much can be done other than wait it out and have faith in the journey. Although, I understand your frustration!

I'm 3 days into my 2 week LRD, and to be honest I didn't do anything similar to this, as much as I wish I did! But I was so worried about putting weight back on and not getting to the number I needed to be at, as I have my surgery through the NHS, so I started my liquid diet about 3 days early, and before that for the 2 weeks I knew of my surgery, I was super strict with what I ate. There are definitely a couple of things I really really crave, but I've waited way too long for this to be ruined by myself. I really love Halo Top ice cream as it's lower in calorie than the usual pint of Ben & Jerrys, so I'll be excited to eat this when I finally can. Also, just a very nice sunday roast. Yorkshire puddings. Can't wait. -
the smaller you get, the slower the weight comes off. you don't need as much calories to move your 160-pound body as you did to move your previous 240-pound body. At 700 cals a day you are still below maintenance cals for your height and current weight. so if you just keep going, you will drop pounds. It may drop at a slower rate, but slower weight loss is still weight loss. also: RE: increasing calories with limited stomach real estate...swap out one of your veggie portions for 1/2 an avocado (200 cals). add olive oil to your food (119 calories per tbsp). add cream to your coffee (50 cals per tbsp). spread almond butter on a cracker (100 cals per tbsp).

I’m with @Spinoza. The stall will break when your body is ready to move forward again. I was barely eating 900 calories at 6 months (probably less as I didn’t have to track just randomly checked for my own interest). But I couldn’t eat anymore than I was at that time. My stalls were very brief but that’s just how my body reacted to the stress of the weight loss & my changing needs (digestive hormones, metabolism, etc.) How much weight have you lost? What do you currently weigh? What’s your goal weight? How tall are you? These details can be helpful for us to be able to share more specific experiences. For example, when we get closer to our final weight, our weight loss slows to almost nothing & sometimes it almost seems a stall.

I believe you'll need and appreciate the 7 days off. Although I felt good a couple days after surgery, I was seriously tired and lagging for quite awhile due to lack of calories, body healing... Etc. If you have the option, I would say don't rush it. Most take 2 or 3 weeks if not more since it is a major surgery, and recovering from it is a little different from other major surgeries because you can't really eat (and some can't drink much either right after surgery) so there is that major body adjustment as well.

Stalls are stalls. There is absolutely no rhyme nor reason to them, they just happen. People try to break them by upping or lowering calories, changing exercise regime, whatever. And when the loss restarts they SWEAR that what they did caused the renewed loss. The fact is, stalls last a few days, or worse, a few weeks and then they end. If you stick to your programme you'll start losing again soon. You don't need to do anything drastic.

I haven't been told this personally but it's something I've heard can happen. I would suggest trying to increase calories without increasing volume if you can't eat more. You could add a small handful of dry roasted or raw nuts, which are very calorie dense. Or choose low fat instead of non fat dairy products. Even just adding a protein shake in between breakfast and lunch or before bed could give you another 200 calories without making you feel too full.

Anyone else told their stall was probably caused by not eating enough calories I am 6 months out from bypass and eat about 700 calories a day. Have been in a stall for 3 weeks. My surgeon said I needed to start eating more not sure how I can barely eat what I do now

I've hit the dreading 3 week stall too... I'm also weighing daily and starting to get a bit down that nothing is budging. I'm one month post surgery tomorrow and haven't lost anything for 9 days. I didn't have to do a preop diet because my starting BMI was 32.6 but I was careful and did loose 7 pounds in the two weeks before surgery. BMI is now 29.68 I was 200.4 pounds at surgery and am now 182.6 - so I've lost 17.8 pounds since surgery. I'm a bit off what the surgical team reccomended because they wanted me to loose 20 pounds in the first months ... so unless I loose 2.2 pounds overnight I've failed at that. I know that stalls happen but It's really really getting me down and upsetting me. I've even put on 1.2 lbs in the last week. And I'm following everything to a T. I'm walking an average of 12k steps/ 5 miles a day. I'm eating under 800 calories. I'm drinking all the fluids. ...which leads me to: this fine looking salad i prepared for lunch. greens, cucumbers, tomatoes, avocado, feta cheese, broccoli, mushrooms and the fried up leftover protein from earlier. logged as 503 calories for the whole thing. i ate...nothing (yet). as often happens, the excitement of eating and prep has waned by the time i was done, and now i no longer feel like eating it. i'll want it later fo sure tho! so for now it will wait for me patiently in the fridge -

Why are you trying to cut back? What do your doctor and dietician have to say about it? You seem to be losing weight very rapidly and doing well, so I don't see how you're doing anything wrong, unless the specific foods you are choosing are bad for you. But just because someone else ate less doesn't mean you aren't doing what is right for you! Remember that 1000 calories per day pre surgery would have been starvation level, and it's very hard to get in the nutrients your body requires in even that amount of food. You've had a metabolism altering surgery. Choose healthy protein and natural foods. Let your new metabolism figure out what it needs to function at the best level for you. If you deprive yourself of calories now, you're setting yourself up for a lifetime of deprivation. Remember it's supposed to take a year to reach your goal!
