Good morning! I am 3.5 weeks post op for a gastric sleeve and have lost 23lbs. I have had a stall now for 8 days:( I am following the program and getting enough protein and water. I'm getting reall frustrated and wondering if I should have had the Gastric Bypass Instead. What's weird is my clothes keep feeling looser, but I can't get to onederland!!! PREOP 223lbs CW 200lbs. -
GERD before surgery advice
S@ssen@ch replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@AlwaysCruising You might want to give it some time. My GERD got much better after a year. I still get a "flare-up" once in a while, but honestly, the only reason I went to a GI doctor was because I wanted to discuss long term options. I was feeling good but was concerned about long-term PPIs and I was not interested in revision. #1-I didn't feel my condition was severe enough to consider that. #2-If I wanted the bypass, I would have gone for it the 1st time around. My GI doctor offered me the LINX procedure or the STRETTA procedure. The LINX is a ring of metal/magnetic beads that they install at the place where your stomach and esophagus meet. The magnets keep it closed so that the acid doesn't keep going up into your esophagus. The STRETTA procedure thickens the lower esophageal sphincter with radiofrequency waves. Same principle as the LINX, it helps close off the sphincter so acid doesn't wash into the esophagus. I was NOT interested in having more hardware installed in my body and I have seen the good things that radiofrequency can do for other conditions, so I chose STRETTA. Unfortunately, my insurance plan doesn't agree and I'm facing paying for it out of pocket. That's what we had planned before COVID hit. I'm not having any problems that would warrant anything urgent, so I wait. Advice for you or anyone with GERD: do your research. There are a lot of lifestyle changes you can make and supplements you can take to help them. God knows I've tried most of them and spent lots of $$ on so-called GERD cures/treatments. So far, what works best for me is sleeping on a wedge and NEVER eating within 3 hours of bedtime. I actually have 2 wedges and if I feel that it's bad, I will sleep on 2 of them (not fun, but it helps) to reach about a 45° angle. I make sure I get plenty of fluids. AND, for the game-changer: DIGESTIVE ENZYMES. I started taking digestive enzymes with my dinner and my reflux got lots better. I read an article that theorizes that a lot of GERD is caused by undigested food in the stomach when you go to bed (hence, no eating within 3 hours of bedtime). I must have slow digestion or something because as soon as I started taking the digestive enzymes, I noticed a big difference. No bloating. No rock-gut. Significantly reduced reflux. -

I don't know if a revision (of any kind) will help or further complicate IBS, (I didn't experience it and have no input, apologies) but you definitely need to see your Surgeon/Team and ask for diagnostic testing. They are the gatekeepers and truthfully only your Surgeon can move the process forward. IMHO: While you are waiting, take a critical look at your diet and log everything. This can help pinpoint what if anything is the inflammatory culprit or caloric overload. That's something you can start immediately to see if you experience any positive change. -

I had a revision to bypass. Lost weight but dialted my stomach which caused me to eat regular meals as with my same stomach. Got my revision today. Feels great and hoping to see great results. Best of luck. But highly recommending you to get a revision. Sent from my SM-N975U using BariatricPal mobile app -

How are you doing so far after the revision? Any reflux or heartburn? I just got all of my tests results back and definitely need to have the revision due to severe GERD, hiatal hernia, and really bad esophagitis. I am very nervous because I feel like nothing will ever get rid of my heartburn. I guess I’ve had the hiatal hernia and heartburn for so long that I don’t know what it’s like not to suffer from it. -
GERD before surgery advice
AlwaysCruising replied to AchieveGoals's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am in a similar position, but earlier in my journey. I had Gerd before surgery but it’s been much worse after. I was slaved on 6/18/ 2020. They did an upper G.I. last Friday and I will reflect three times within like a minute of her watching. I didn’t realize it was that often, although I have realize there was more acid in my stomach that there needed to be because it creates a sensation of been hungry for me. The nurse practitioner for the surgeon called me and she said (a) it could get better as I today am just 8 weeks out and not fully healed (per her) and (b) a future fundoplication type procedure might be needed (he does some beaded ring version). I asked about the option of switch to a Bypass instead and she said she would talk to the surgeon about which of those 2 would be the best future option. Notably he does a lot of the fundoplication so maybe will lean that way? She also suggested that they do another scope but with two special procedures with it. OY. Please keep me updated on your progress, I wish you luck! -
Obsessing about Plastic Surgery!!

I hate it but this is the only picture I have before my gastric bypass surgery. It was my birthday at the zoo before surgery. The stupid zoo snapped this horrid picture without me knowing. I wish I’d been able to enjoy the day more than I did. I treated my mom and her friends to a free day at the zoo and a close encounter with flamingos that I’d won. (Yeah It was supposed to be my birthday) that was April 2019. I tried to hide behind my camera. I didn’t know if the surgery was even going to happen but it did get approved the end of April one week before surgery. That happened April 29th. I despise pictures of myself and am not good at taking them. I tried to take a after picture. With and without the Faja. Trying clothes I never thought I’d wear. Not sure anyone wants to see. I dislike my arms and hands and my knees are weird ... and I don’t like my ugly mug 🤣 sorry they are terrible pictures but I never thought I’d be this weight or size ... or that I’d have an actual waist. -
5 years post op and have huge REGRET!
Addicted replied to escape_pinacolada's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My gastric bypass was 2 weeks ago so I haven't had a chance for regrets. I am writing to let you know that I too had a Nissen about 10 years ago. It helped a little since my GERD was so bad that I literally had acid burn in my mouth. Over the years the problem has returned to its original state. With the bypass, my surgeon said the Nissen had come apart so he did away with it. What? I am still in panic mode though he said he took measures to disable the nerve that activates acid secretion. Yeah, I know, I don't get it either but my husband says there are no longer any protons to inhibit with acid blockers. I will keep asking the surgeon to explain it until I finally get it. The surgeon said I will have the reflux for about a week and its been two. I don't know the difference in reflux and food backing up due to overeating. Due to the Nissen I could only have a gastric bypass, none of the other lesser procedures. It sounds like the Nissen would have been required regardless of the WLS. Mine was. I understand your frustration and pain. I was so happy when they told me they could fix my GERD that I literally cried and to be honest, any relief was a plus. I support you. -

I occasionally got heartburn before my sleeve. At year 3 my GERD became horrible. I had a herna repair in December. The GERD is better. I am still happy that I picked the sleeve due to having low iron and other absorption issues. Bypass would have killed me. I am now in year 6. Not sure what to due next about GERD. However, I'm not given up. Sent from my SM-G965U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Countdown is on...starting to freak out.
Lychee replied to LAJ23's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, I'm about the same height and weight as you and also have my Gastric Bypass surgery scheduled for Wednesday. I'm also getting very anxious about it and have been going over and over the reasons why I have taken this decision. I don't know how old you are but I'll be 60 soon and have been losing and regaining the same 60/70 lbs most of my life and I just don't see how I can change that cycle without extra help. I am very active and play sport most days and I don't have any other co-morbidities. One of the main reasons I am having my surgery is to enable me to continue playing sport without doing any further damage to my body. Carrying this extra weight isn't pleasant nor is it good for me and it becomes more and more difficult as I get older. I suspect that I've already damaged my hips and knees playing tennis like this and I want to preserve what I've got left. I researched WLS years ago and 10 years ago I had a gastric band which I didn't get on with at all. I immediately had a de-fill and never had it filled again. It was removed last year. I wish I'd gone for the bypass or sleeve instead of the band to be honest because I feel I've missed out on so much because of this weight not to mention the strain it's put on my body. I don't know if this helps and only you can decide if it's the right thing for you at the moment. I wish you all the best with whatever you decide. -
Obsessing about Plastic Surgery!!
Darktowerdream replied to ChubRub's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
@ChubRub i think I was born tired 🤣 ok not funny I guess ... I’ve dealt with being sick most of my life. The fatigue gets worse over time. Each thing that takes little pieces away I don’t get back. I can’t choose the price I pay. Like, It was either keep gaining weight or fight with all I had left. I also knew having plastics would take its toll ... and it has - the fatigue is a bit hellish but it’s my life as I know it and I have to learn my new normal. Showers are a drain. At some point I need to take over doing laundry again if I can. It’s hard to explain, I can’t go back to normal, just a new version of normal. Things people don’t really think about. It’s funny the things I don’t think about. I casually said To my mom something about it feels like a cat scratching my backside and she says to me that’s the first time I actually said anything about pain since my surgeries ... she thinks I’m brave I don’t think I am ... my skin is so thin and sensitive like an old lady. My backside incision is doing better so I just put a smaller bandage but for some reason the Faja is rubbing me the wrong way in that area ... Pain is such a everyday thing for me that I guess I don’t think about surgery. Although ... coming out of anesthesia from a long surgery is rough with M.E. And getting out of bed takes longer. Most people don’t know what I’m actually dealing with. My mom asked me why my scars look purple and I’m like I don’t know. I honestly don’t ... could just be me. I don’t remember that with any previous surgeries. I have scars on my calves from tendon surgeries. So scars aren’t a big deal to me. The skin ... now that was bad. as for the comment above It’s wrong to say “a good surgeon does one surgery at a time” I had a great surgeon. I had three procedures. He took excellent care of me. It helps to have a lower BMI at the time of surgery for less risk, he might not have done the procedures had certain things not been in place. I guess I’m just saying Wether you have some procedures together or separate is an individual thing. Not necessarily how good a surgeon is. My surgery was solely to remove A lot of excess skin and not fat. My risk factors were more based on chronic illness and disability but my surgeon took care of me. Made sure I had an extra day before I got on my feet, kept the iv fluids in extra as well. That’s a good doctor to me. No offense to the OP. I forgot what I was saying I meant to just simply respond. I’m sorry. I haven’t gotten in the pool yet. It’s humid and hot as hades here. I am waiting for the coccyx incision to close. That and im chicken. I haven’t found a swimsuit yet and haven’t been around humans in a while ... I don’t know if I can do it. Be social. React to the reactions to me in a swimsuit and me not having worn a swimsuit in forever. Or Go swimming. I don’t remember the last time I did. Or how my skin will react to the chlorine. My only issue right now is a pain above my belly button. Feels like some type of hernia. So tired of chronic gut issues related to my neurological problems. The belt lipectomy/butterfly lift actually helped with things at first but then this hernia thing popped up. But I honestly think it’s related to an old incision ... I need to figure out how to deal with this. After my gastric bypass surgery it revealed a neurological problem that started before the surgery and might not have been diagnosed if I didn’t have it but I never got answer to the cause of it ... (but I’ve already babbled too much) -

@ChubRub that’s awesome 👏 I never truly had a goal weight in mind, I was too afraid of it. This time you will get there. It’s a rough bumpy ride but it wasn’t until gastric bypass surgery that I truly had the tool to get here. I fought so hard on my own and even following the rules I fell backwards and hit rock bottom where I’d hoped never to go again (over 200lbs) The lowest I ever got was 124lb and only stayed there weeks and settled at 134lbs ... and then the slow creep my gallbladder started to get bad and I had surgery and crap happened ... I fought back when we started the process of moving. And didn’t get far with it before I got slammed hard and the weight just piled on no matter what I did ... but somehow i knew gastric bypass surgery was the tool I needed and I’m grateful that it happened. I’m grateful to have had plastics as well. The excess skin was bringing me down. And was more than just cosmetic. I say this because you will have success and be pleased when you have plastics and feel you have reached a goal you couldn’t before. 💙 -
Insurance was approved for roux en y gastric bypass. Pre op is Sept 2. I'm so excited! I've waited almost a year. I'm also nervous, but I want my life back. My weight is controlling it and i need to make a change.

Hi Gang! So good to read your recent posts and catch up. I've been away for a couple weeks navigating life and wanted to pop back in and read and update. Boy can I relate to ALL the recent posts. Like others my hunger is back. Not terrible but since it was gone for about 7 weeks I certainly notice it's return. It causes me to eat too fast and then I too experience that ROCK ON THE CHEST feeling. I find I have to go walk in my backyard and gently twist at the waist to find relief after nearly every meal. The twisting and holding briefly at the waist while walking seems to help move the food or gas along a bit. You might try it if you're struggling like I am. Hope it helps! Like @Groovymommy I'm not exercising enough. I do walk for 30 minutes every evening. But it's easy and time for me to dial it up with some weights and harder cardio. Really inspiring to hear about your weight losses! I'm progressing at my slower rate and pep-talking myself into believing it's right for me. I'm 9.5 weeks post op and have lost 25.5 pounds. Hoping to say 26 pounds gone by this Tuesday at 10 weeks post. I will say my greatest joy is my daily 1 cup of Fairlife 2% chocolate milk mixed with cold brew coffee and a little whipped cream. There's no doubt it increases my hunger and the constipation but I've decided it's worth it. YUM! Also started taking Senna. Two pills right before bed and it helps keep me regular with no side effects at all. The colace was starting to make me nauseous and so I was very happy to discover the senna. Give it a try if you're struggling. Very gentle. I'm getting between 60-70 protein a day. Hit 48 oz of water daily despite by best efforts at more. And get about 800 calories a day. I know my daily carbs are a little high. My nut recommended under 40. I try and keep them at 60. And never higher than my protein. But I just can't give up that Fairlife and coffee with whip. As far as deep analysis... I've been doing some too. I sure do relate to the discoveries that come from not loving much food anymore. The desire for it is like a drug. The lack of satisfaction from it is like a little nagging whisper in my ear. I do see how other addictions can become an issue. Carbs taste good and go down well but I can only eat very little or I feel sick. And everything else is harder to digest. I think acknowledging those feelings of dissatisfaction is helping me manage them. I still see my eating like "rewards". I get those protein grams and drink that water so I can have my carb treats. I'm afraid I'm just wired that way. But really admire those who find joy in healthier things. Let me state here to make it official that I plan to kick UP the exercise starting now! My first WL goal is 60 pounds and at 25 i'm nearly halfway. Time to dial it up. So great to hear from you all. Keep popping in, Bypassers, let's help inspire one another! ONWARD!! -

Thank you!! This was fascinating. And contradicted what my surgeon said about the shorter bypass slowing the loss. I do find it interesting that the study didn't address the negative side effects of losing weight and whether those symptoms differed with the shorter vs longer bypass. Thanks again so much for sharing!! It makes me want to dig deeper. -
I realise this is maybe not the best attitude to have one week post-op - but I would feel so much better about this if I knew that one day, when I'm healthy, I can enjoy the occasional bit of fast food like everyone else. Can people who have had a bypass eat a McDonalds if they want to?

Obsessing about Plastic Surgery!!
Tammie G replied to ChubRub's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I waited 10 years before I decided to have plastic surgery(surgery date January 3, 2005) Because I wanted to learn how to maintain the 4 E’s-Eat, Exercise, Excitement of when I had my weight loss surgery, and Enjoy my progress. I never set a goal weight because this is a journey for the rest of my life. My goal was to be smaller than what I was before my gastric bypass surgery. Goal met. Clothing size at surgery: 24/26 and clothing size today: 4/6. A Good surgeon will only do one procedure at a time because of the time the patient is under anesthesia. 12/7/2015-arm lifts took 4 1/2 hours 2/17/2017-liposuction to knees and calves took 3 1/2 hours 12/10/2019-extended tummy tuck with pubic lift (6 pounds of skin removed, all stretched marks gone with removal of skin and 3 of my ports from gastric bypass gone). New belly button Drains for 2 weeks. Scar is like a small straight line beyond the hips. Took 4 1/2 hours 3/13/2020-lipo360 of stomach, flanks, and back (11 pounds of fat removed). I can feel my rib cage. Took 3 1/2 hours. Planning breast reduction and lift surgery for November-in treatment for varicose veins at this time. Did consultation this past Monday and my surgeon stated the procedure would take about 4 1/2 hours Because of molding the new breast . He is going to liposuction my under arms to remove fat. -
I am using the display name "Addicted" because if I was in denial before about my food addiction, I am no longer. I am 2 weeks out from Bypass and have been very cocky. I have had no pain other than from the prerequisite gas. I was the model patient post surgery, that is, until I got home. I stopped tracking my intake and almost immediately began to tinker with my diet. Bad enough but then came the night my husband picked up pizza, my fave. Not only did I grab a piece in spite of his, "Are you really going to eat that?", I ate another piece after he went to bed. Oh yes, I became overfull and had to tough it out. The next morning, I was in tears admitting that I had a problem. My husband listened knowing that this was a battle I had to fight on my own. I punished myself by drinking only liquids until late afternoon when I was very hungry. I picked at the toppings on the remaining pizza without even a smidge of guilt because I have had times of sneak eating. Even though I suffer physically, that doesn't stop me from overfilling whether intentional or not. I won't go into my reasons for comfort eating because I am sure we all have a story but I will tell you that in high school, when at friend's houses, I would sneak food from their refrigerators. I was always hungry and their meals were not as satisfying as those I got at home. Because I am of small build, was never overweight and had somewhat neglectful parents, no one noticed that I was a food addict. I was extremely thin until age 30 so it didn't seem to matter what I ate. I could not gain weight no matter how hard I tried. My mother did say, "Someday you are going to regret the eating habits you are developing, just look at your Aunt Anita." It's too bad we have to learn the hard way that our parents had our best interests at heart. Honestly, I have an internal fear of being hungry. I saw a woman on "My 600 lb. life discover that she was in so much emotional pain that she decided that she would never be uncomfortable again, hence the 600+ lb. weight" A light went on for me.
So just for today, I will stick to the meal plan and begin to track my food and water. I will work to conquer my fear of being hungry. Having been surrounded by addiction most of my life, I have gained the tools to become successful though my journey to emotional health.
