VSG to RNY: please give me your stats
Dogmom68 replied to Heather0811's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello! I’m scheduled for a revision on 8/8 as well! I had a VSG 18 months ago and have had terrible acid reflux and developed a hiatal hernia. I only lost about 40 lbs after my sleeve, too. I’m hoping the revision will not only take care of the acid reflux but that I’ll lose 50 more lbs! I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I hear that weight loss is much slower after a revision so I’m hoping I don’t get really frustrated. Maybe we can be surgery buddies and keep in touch! Keep us all posted on how things are going. I start my liquid diet on Monday. Good luck with everything!😊 -
Revision after Band Removal
Nanook replied to Linds's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi, You make a good point about the sleeve. Sorry you're in so much pain from your lap band erosion and complications. I did not do well myself with the band and since it's removal am switching now to RNY. I feel I need the malabsorption also and since I could not lose with the band have more confidence with RNY, also my daughter had it done a year ago and has been very successful so far with RNY. Good luck to you with your complications and eventual revision, Nancy. -
Eroded Band To Gastric Sleeve - Requires Six Month Program?
FXDF2008 replied to FXDF2008's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I hear you Jasmine. I went nuts after my band was removed. It's amazing how quickly the weight comes back. Now I'm miserable and feel the way I did pre-band which is why I don't want to have to wait another six months. The company I work for is in the process of being bought out so there is a very real possibility that I may not be covered in six months. I have started the six month diet (earlier this month) but that puts me into June at the earliest to have my surgery. By then it will have been fifteen months that I will have been without some sort of Bariatric assistance. It just doesn't make sense why the insurance companies would make us do this after already having a band. Why are you revising to the sleeve? -
I was banded on May 12th and my port flipped within the 2nd month. I had my port revision done on Aug. 26 in outpatient surgery. I was in and out. He moved port lower. So far, so good. He was able to remove the Fluid and replaced it during surgery. To keep me on track, he did a refill in three weeks. Alls is good now, I have about 5 cc in my band and actually went back last month to get a small unfill. I'm ready for another tomorrow.....I hope he finds it easy. Best wishes to you.

My bypass is this Wed. My bed is upstairs. Will I be able to climb the steps or do I need to make a bed in my recliner downstairs? I am trying to get everything clean and in order while I am in the hospital so I do not have to worry about it when I get home.

Hello All, Does anyone have any REAL LIFE experience(s) with taking alternative plant medicines like ayahuasca or san pedro, for religious practices, after undergoing either gastric sleeve, bypass or gastric banding. I'd like to gather this information from people that have first hand experiences or maybe second hand from a friend, but i'm not asking for the opinions from those who have not these experiences. Thank you.

Question About Co-Workers
Butterthebean replied to Crazyscrublady's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I didn't tell a whole lot of coworkers before the surgery because I just didn't want to talk about it every single day. But now that it's over I don't care who knows. Firstly, I couldn't live with myself trying to be dishonest or hiding something. But the big reason is, it was one of my coworkers who inspired me to have the surgery indirectly. We were talking one day and out of the blue he told me he had a bypass. He was very up front and honest about the whole ordeal. It really helped remove the stigma of the whole thing from my mind. After that I started doing all my research and had my first doctor visit a month later. So I hope by being honest and open about my surgery, I may one day inspire someone else to improve their life. -
Banded for 3 years and struggling with reflux
marfar7 replied to CAROLYNFC's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Have u had a recent xray? 3 yrs of a lapband, almost daily vomiting, I suffered severe nighttime reflux. My band had slipped. gained 30 lbs back during the year I was unfilled. Last July I had a sleeve revision. Sometimes reflux is the ONLY symptom of a slip. I had a minor slip that turned into a major slip and couldn't be fixed on it's own. Good luck! I know how miserable reflux is. -
Banded for 3 years and struggling with reflux
vapetlover replied to CAROLYNFC's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
If you are not happy with the job the surgeon did, by all means, call another gastroenterologist and ask if they do revisions. I was reluctant to go back to my original Dr. b/c I had gained some weight back, but so far, I'm glad I did. If you do change, be sure to request that the original dr's office send copies of your file to your new dr. -
Hi everyone. I’m new here. I’m going to have a Lap Band put in next month (August). I have a Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass in 92’ and lost about 200 pounds. After two pregnancies and many years I gained about 100 pounds back. Currently I am about 60 pounds more than my lowest weight with the Roux-En-Y. My pouch lost its shape and the opening is stretched out so I am hungry pretty much 24/7. I meg with a doctor who said the Lap Band would give me my pouch back and I’d be able to be full again. I was super excited to FINALLY get approval (just waiting on the surgery date). I’ve been reading this forum and read all the horror stories. Am I making a huge mistake? Am I making the right decision? Has anyone had success with the Lap Band with no complications? ANY input would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you! Kimberly

Scheduled for Lap Band - Success vs Regret?
Trouvette replied to KimberlyV's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yes, from what I can gather, the majority of his procedures are still bands. But he is a pioneer in the field and lives with the band himself, so he has a unique perspective. I also wonder about the practices of the other doctors that banders have used. Not every doctor has the advantage of how huge the NYU Langone network is. The care is exceptional. Earlier this year I had to go to the ER unrelated to the band (dehydration because I played seven hours of tennis without realizing that I was dehydrating!) I couldn’t keep down a sip of water as a result, so I went to their ER. As soon as I mentioned that I was a Fielding patient, they had the on-call doctor from Fielding’s office doing a consult, did an esophagram, did an unfill, gave me more fluid via IV than they would a non-band patient because they understood that I would have more trouble than most for a while. It wasn’t even a bump in the road because I got proper care. If you don’t have easy access to your team, I can totally see how the band is a less attractive option. I wouldn’t, for instance, do the trip to a doctor in Mexico for the procedure because you won’t have your team when it’s all over. I’m a battleaxe. I have to stay active here so we all have that support base. But I do think the website founder should do a dedicated forum for revisions. -
My Revision Surgery from the Band to the Sleeve
sleeveee replied to sleeveee's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks so much Lisa. I think I finally found the section on band-to-sleeve revisions, and I will be spending some time there in the next few days. Looking forward to the spring and to our spring meeting. I'm going to ask my local library if they have a free meeting room that we might be able to use for an hour or so. If not, I'll see you at the Atrium! Best to you, your dear husband and your fur baby! -
Hello All, My bypass was 1/13/23. Since thenm I'be lost 76lbs. Recently i've been suffering with very low energy. I'm taking my multivitamin as i should but all i want to do is rest and or sleep. Okay - so here are my new questions
joatsaint replied to Cleo's Mom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't have the answers to all, but I'll answer what I can. 1) Do you get dumping syndrome with the sleeve? In theory no, but some people claim to have had it. I never have experienced dumping. Dumping syndrome is the movement of food too fast from the stomach to the intestines. The pyloric valve, located between the stomach and small intestine regulates the movement of food and is still in place after being sleeved. It is bypassed in Gastric Bypass surgery, so dumping is something GB patients have to be aware of. 2) Does the sleeve make osteoporosis worse? Can't answer that one. 3) What do you take for chronic pain (like arthritis or back pain) that works? For a month or so post-op, I was told to take Tylenol for pain and to avoid NSAID based pain relievers. I've never had any problems taking any kind of over the counter pain reliever - aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, Excedrin, Tylenol. I do not take any prescription pain meds. 4) Do you suffer from Vitamin or mineral deficiency or poor nutrition from stomach being smaller? It's possible, if I were to eat unhealthy foods, but I take a Multivitamin supplement as well. I had to make a conscious decision to make good food choices post-op, not only to lose the weight, but to develop good eating habits once my sleeve had healed and I could hold more food. I started eating the diet my doc recommended right after surgery. At first, I could only hold 1/2 cup of food per meal, so I had to make the right food choices. At 6 months, I could hold a little more, and at 1 year, I could hold even more at each meal. That's why it's important to get into the habit of good eating habits. Eventually my sleeve healed and I could tolerate ANY food. It was up to me to make the right choices. And I can honestly say, everything I went through was worth it. VSG gave me a 2nd chance on life. I only regret waiting till I hit rock bottom before realizing I needed the help of VSG surgery to lose the weight. Control what you can, cope with what you can't, and concentrate on what really counts in your life. Know what matters and never give up on it. -

1/4 cup of food while on mushies - correct?
froggie456834 replied to froggie456834's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just wanted to update this thread - the dietician says they don't expect me to eat only 1/4 cup of mushies. I can eat until satisfied in this stage (they don't expect weight loss). When I have band restriction, they say I need to follow the 1/4 cup rule. Apparently the materials they gave me are the same they give gastric bypass patients, so it didn't differentiate on when I should eat the limited amount. Regardless, I'm eating very, VERY little... yet actually I gained a 1/2 pound over the weekend. Fun! -
Sleeved At A Low Weight
paulsgirl1297 replied to Mz Need da Sleeve's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am having the sleeve and weigh 199 but I have high blood pressure, diabetes and a veterbral disc degeneration. Mine isn't a revision. I am a big girl because I'm a only 5'1" ... -
Hi everyone i had a gastric band fitted in 2009. Was great for a while but sadly, blockages and breakages (from a faulty batch) and I have given up. I started at 260lbs, down to 175 with the band, now back up to 225 so time to stop that growth! i have a revision to a RNY (Fobi pouch type) on 14 December - and today heard insurance will pay 20% which is great news. The bypass involved no special diet, really, so am a bit apprehensive: protein drinks (less variety here in New Zealand I think), dumping, and having the RNY by open surgery not laparoscopic - all make be a bit nervous... Thanks to you all for keeping me company on this journey.

Okay - so here are my new questions
saidieblue replied to Cleo's Mom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First, congratulations on surviving breast cancer! Secondly, I was sleeved December 4th, no dumping for me however I do have terrible GERD. There's no malabsortion srestriction but I do keep up on my Vitamins, vitamins are important!! Its a "tool" I still make the daily decisions however best choise I ever made. Im on ppi for gerd, I think if that doesn't correct itself I'll probably have to have the revision to bypass. I don't know the waiting period, does anyone else know? Good luck!!! Thank you in advance :-) -
Sorry but I need to vent today!! I was at the doctor's for my 6 month post op visit. Since surgery I have lost a total of 90 pounds. That is 90 pounds of hard work!!! Prior to seeing the doctor, I met with his assistant and a dr in training. As I was discussing progress, etc with the assistant, he turned to the dr in training and made a comment that "she JUST had the sleeve" done. Of course I asked what was meant by that comment. He quickly replied that if I would have had a bypass I would have lost more weight. Really!!! I went through all the pre op crap -- including liquid diet that a bypass patient would do. I went through surgery and spent two days in the hospital. I have totally changed the way I am living and I HAVE LOST 90 POUNDS in 6 months. Not a happy camper that I was told that I "just had the sleeve" done. I was a part of the decision as to what type of surgery I did and I do not regret my decision about the sleeve. It is working for me. Very frustrated with the comment. At least the surgeon was far more positive and supportive!! He told me that he was proud of me. Thanks for letting me vent!! Such a frustrating situation today.

Waking up from surgery
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Megan5619's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
With my sleeve, I had major pain for almost 2 weeks. With my revision to bypass, I had very little pain. Mostly, it was uncomfortable for about 4 days. Wish I had just done the bypass to begin with. -
Banded but a little worried
RestlessMonkey replied to temmaddie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Honestly I'm kind of shocked at what you weren't told! Good grief! Your surgeon needs a refresher. I was told NO Water 15 min before, never during, and none 15 min after eating. It can wash food through more quickly and "bypass" the band(in which case, why bother getting banded if you're just going to wash the food through it?) and it CAN stretch the pouch, eating and drinking at the same time. So I say you need to really try to STOP THAT! LOL One poster here said her doctor told her "If you continue drinking and eating the band will fail. Period" That scared her straight. Where did you get your surgery? Maybe you can go to another seminar there? Sounds like the one you attended skipped a lot of stuff that you need to know! -
There is a member here by the name of "Jax" (you can search for her) who was sleeved at about 160ish and she was a band-to-sleeve revision. She hasn't been on here in a long time but you could try PMing her since I think most people have an email associated with their account...it might spit it to her email and she could respond. Good luck!

BMI and insurance approval
2goldengirl replied to nicksmommy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Contact your health plan and request a copy of their criteria for revision of bariatric surgery - this is key, because most health plans have different criteria for revision than initial surgery. Hope this helps! -
I had a bypass 2-6. 2 wks prior to surgery I was on a high protein diet only protein shake 2xday and 4 oz protein and veges for my meal wasn't excited about that a good start loss 10lbs prior to surgery. Liquid only day of and 2 days post op purée for 4 weeks. Then soft for weeks. A day o did not adhere and had a bite or 2 of a shrimp and I paid for it. I am sure I plugged my pouch I had severe abdominal pain for 12hr and threw up at least twice. Follow the plan. At about week 3-4 I plateau but it turned around I am down 39lbs. I feel I'm behind but not gaining
