Gastric Sleeve vs Roux-en-y
jami.1992 replied to JomaraElizabeth's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had the same thoughts when considering which surgery I wanted....i considered the sleeve for several reasons...a few being that the actual surgical procedure was less than half the time it would take to do the bypass and I heard recovery wasn’t as bad. I also have a few close friends who had the sleeve and are more than happy with their results. I ended up deciding on RNY due to my occasional acid reflux and I was nervous about regaining my weight and falling back into the old habits that got my in the situation I was in before surgery. I didn’t want to have to deal with the possibility of needing revision surgery and having to go through everything twice. I figured I was already going to be under anesthesia so I just thought “I’m not going to know how long I’m asleep” lol But I know several people that had the sleeve and it was a perfect fit for them with long term success to back it up! It’s really just up to you! -
Extended Release (psychiatric meds) after RNY
Jscales11 replied to 12345shs16's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m having RNYGB in Oct. saw my psychiatrist the other day, and she said that most of the ER will still work, but sometimes they have to be given twice a day. It just depends on the med and your metabolism. It will be interesting to see what happens with mine too. I’m an NP also, but have never really had to work with gastric bypass pts unfortunately. -
Hello I looking for recommendations for a mini gastric bypass surgery in Mexico. I have a sleeve done back in 2014 unfortunately I put on some weight since then. thanks.

Gastric Sleeve vs Roux-en-y
Hop_Scotch replied to JomaraElizabeth's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would think that people can gain weight back with either procedure but possibly less so with the bypass due to the malabsorption. One thing to consider if you already suffer acid reflux/GERD the sleeve may make it worse. -
Im schedule for surgery oct 14 but I am torn between having my sleeve as schedule or talking to my surgeon about switching to bypass... I have been researching and their is a chance that after 2 years with the sleeve I can gain some weight back and since im going thru this process and have been working so hard I might as well go all in (thats my train of though) I would love to hear what are your thoughts maybe you got one and now looking back you would have gotten the other one. Thank you in advance Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi perfektlynrml & WishMeSmaller, Thanks so much for posting your experiences. I am hoping to get my surgery done before the holidays and this is helping me greatly. I hope you don't mind me asking, but did you guys have laser surgery or the traditional way? They are going to do laser on me for my bypass and I wonder if it makes a difference in recovery. Thanks and I wish you both well in your recoveries.

I’m about 4 weeks post op from my bypass surgery. Down a total of 47lbs since pre-op diet and feeling great. My doc said I could start swinging a club at 4-6 weeks so I’m itching to start. Did anyone have any challenges to be aware of? I’m healing and feeling well but cautiously optimistic on adding golf. Love to hear any feedback. Thanks!

I was given the following reasons to refrain from alcohol: (1) empty calories (2) can contribute to worsening GERD (3) metabolization of the alcohol may have undesired effects with your new digestive system (4) risk of transfer addiction. I was not told never to have it again, but to use caution before proceeding. I rarely had alcohol during weight loss phase, I would guess probably less than 10 times the entire time, and these times wouldn't even be an entire regular "serving". It was always dry red wine or gin/vodka with soda (less calories and less carbs). I once had a couple sips of a flavoured soju like 2 months post op and ended up on the bathroom floor for over an hour. Not pretty. I can get tipsy/drunk reeeaaalllly quickly (and on much, much, much less than pre-op). But I also sober up astonishingly quickly as well. 1 drink and I'm def affected. 2 drinks and I'm drunk. But about an hour later I'm totally back to normal again. I'm almost 2 years post op now and I drink fairly regularly (particularly since COVID started!), though I still stick to red wines and spirits with no sugary mixers for the most part (with the exception of Kahlua, an important ingredient in espresso martinis) P.S. I am NOT advocating drinking to all, especially if your team advises against it. Everyone is different and should aim to know their limitations and stay within them. Some may have more trouble with this, which is probably why lots say to just stay away. It can become a slippery slope.... Edited to add: I just realized the title of this thread was for bypass. Oopsies, I'm a sleeve, and I think it may be a bit different, between the two: alcohol will bypass a portion (or all?) of the small intestine in by-passers and go directly to the the large intestine, which results in different alcohol metabolization rates...

weight loss from revisions is usually not nearly as fast as it is with virgin surgeries. Also, if your BMI is comparatively low, that would mean a slower weight loss rate, too. also, if you haven't lost in a week, you may be in a stall. Most people have their first stall during the first 4-6 weeks after surgery. all that said, as long as your weight is gradually going down (even if you stall now and then, which you will...), you're good.

I’m also about 5 months out from bypass. My surgeon told me okay to have a glass of wine at June family reunion (would have been @ 3 months), but suggested I try it at home first to see how it affects me post WLS. In general, he doesn’t encourage it because calories in should be Max nutrition during weight loss phase and drinking on so few calories/carbs cannot be good for us. Due to Covid, family reunion was cancelled so I haven’t even tried it. If your surgeon said one year, he may have a good reason for it-it makes sense.

Hi I am 5 months into my journey after a bypass. I'm having a few issues but doing ok. I was wondering why alcohol isn't allowed for 12 months? Does it damage your new pouch or is it normal health advice? Can anyone shed any light on this please? Thanks 👍

I am now more than 6 months out from my revision surgery from sleeve to bypass. I can eat normally and have not experienced the “stuck” food syndrome again. Did you advise your team about the stuck food feeling since your most recent surgery?

andreariv replied to escape_pinacolada's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had the fundiplocation surgery in 2006. I had gastric bypass surgery in June. The surgeon chose bypass over the sleeve because of the previous surgery. I hope you’re feeling better soon. -

Potential Vitamin and Mineral Deficiency
Napua replied to SeattleGirl72's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Presently taking Barimelts vitamins. These works well for me during my liquid diet for surgery scheduled on the 28th. I know the Barimelts vitamins will do good, these vitamins are made for gastric bypass and sleeve patients. -
Pre-Op Diet Weight Loss Liquid Diet & second guessing
Napua replied to MariaC6's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Presently on liquid diet as instructed by my doctor. Losing pounds, however I am aware that off this liquid diet my weight would become an issue. I struggled with wt for years verses a few weeks with liquid diet losing weight. My choice to avoid other health issues is to go ahead with the surgery and venture onward to a healthier lifestyle. This surgery would focus me on eating healthier and eating junk foods that would cause dumping syndrome for bypass patients. My choice of avoiding dumping syndrome is a number one choice after the surgery on the 28th. Good luck you all on your journey to healthier lifestyle/living. -
