  1. I had surgery on 7/27. I had the lap band since 2002, so I was revised to the sleeve. My journey has been pretty smooth! I think having experience with the band help me with handling the sleeve. It is so important to eat slow and chew a lot. I find that if I have no distractions it is easier to concentrate and to make sure I'm not mindless eating. I have been weighing myself every morning, which I don't recommend :-) it drives you insane :-). Let me know if you have any questions, I would be happy to help if I can!

Lapband removal - not totally confident w/surgeon

I guess it depends on your BMI. I had to do the liver shrink diet for two weeks prior to my band removal. I know that my surgeon did an EGD and an UGI with 15 degree head tilt. It was to prove that I had reflux/esophagus issues related to the band, and it would support my case for revision to RNY. So I'm wondering what the process would be to get your revision covered if the surgeon didn't do the tests to prove you were having issues. Maybe it's something to ask the surgical coordinator. It may not be necessary for every insurance company.

    Un-Banded 11/15 :(

I can't make this better for you, just know that you have every right in the world to be mad and feel like your body has betrayed you. While my story isn't nearly as traumatic as yours I am also a failed band. Mine prolapsed and I had to have emergency removal, once inside he found I had started to erode as well. I was supposed to revise to RNY but once he was in and saw how much damage I had he felt it unwise to do the revision at that time (I did get a revision 6 months later). For weeks I was an emotional wreck. I was mad at my body, felt totally betrayed by it. Talk it out, cry it out, scream it out....what you're feeling is completely normal.

    Port reaction

Melissa: I too had weeping incisions for almost 4 weeks after my Mexican doctor placed the band. Luckily mine healed. I have had some port issues. My port tilted and the tubing was almost protruding through my skin. If the Port had been placed deeper in the abdomen and the excess tubing either trimmed or pushed back up into the abdominal cavity (which is what the American docs do) the port revision surgery I had by my American doctor would not have had to take place. I am skeptical with the fatty tissue explanation. My Mexican doc told me that the protruding area would go away with more weight loss. My American doc said that is not possible and it would eventually poke through the skin and that would mean to take the port out till the area heals. Please take all the precautions and I would even get a second opinion. The liquid needs to be cultured before any surgery takes place. If they don't then you could end up in the situation Lisa found herself in.

    All about BOOBS!

@@SunflowerGal I'm the same way! I lost about 90 lbs and yep... I got a lift and implants them gained that back PLUS! They still look awesome. I'm only 2 weeks post op from a revision but I'm worried! THAT was NOT a fun surgery. It's been about ten years for me as well soooo I know some type of plastics will be in my future. So glad I'm not the only who did this! ????

    Possible Revision

I totally understand! That is exactly how I felt. I came very close to backing out of the revision and taking my chances with the ppis. plus at the time of my initial surgery I almost switched to rny right up until surgery. My thoughts were that I did not want to have the surgery twice. Don’t fear the bypass though. Just be sure to take vitamins every single day. Keep up with having your bloodwork done and you should do just fine.

    Possible Revision

I was a grade C but yesterday it was a D !! They are calling me to schedule the revision tomorrow. Glad that you are doing well. Have you had an EGD done since revision to know if it is helping your esophagus. Do you still have reflux?

    Anyone from Dfw area?

Keller Area, Sleeve to Bypass revision on 8/22. So nervous, 5 more days! Looking for a buddy
  11. I am getting an endoscopy done next month to see what is wrong with my sleeve which will most likely need a revision. My current health insurance has no bariatric coverage. Is there any insurance that I could self pay for my revision? My other option is cash pay for this surgery. Thank you.

    Fear of the yo-yo

So many of us have done the yo-yo thing! And I think most of us worry about it to some degree (some more than others). Here's my thinking. 1) The band doesn't "expire" and will continue to help me limit my portions long after I reach goal. 2) If, God forbid, something were to go wrong with my band in the future, I think I would simply revise to a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy. 3) Check Jachut here on this board! She lives in Australia and has had wonderful success and I admire her and her wisdom about lilving with your band. 4) Those people who tell you that you're getting to be too skinny have a little bit of the same problem we have: They are looking through fat glasses (remember "beer glasses"??)...You remember all too well what FAT was like and by comparison of course anything is an improvement. And once you get close to your personal goal many see it as close enough. The ones who comment mean well, they really do. Just thank them for the compliment and move on. It doesn't require a discussion because in the end, you will do what you believe is best for you. And the one thing I've done that I recommend highly is that once something is too loose, I GET RID OF IT! Yeah, all of us clothes horders who had bins and bags and closets full of half a dozen sizes -- Stop That! If you don't have any bigger clothes to dig out and wear if you were to gain 10 pounds should be an inspiration at least to stick with this. So far, for me, it has worked.

    9/30

I had surgery in 09/16th, so 3-weeks and 2-days ago and I had a lap-band removal and revision to RNY. My doctor has me progressing with food such as crumbled hamburger meat with cheese. Hopefully, you can have that soon. I am drinking plenty of fluids everyday and taking the Vitamins as directed. It gets better.

    Lap Band To Gastric Bypass

Johnnybots...I was a lapband to RNY revision. My lapband came out 2010 and I had my RNY 7/11/2012. My lapband prolapsed and emergency surgery had to be done to take it out. I had suffered through a lapband revision 2 years after I had it put in and then the 2 years later the prolaps. I too did well with it but, after it came out I gained some back and decided I needed to stop the weight gain before I gained it all back. I've had a few infection issues with the RNY but, I don't regret having it done. Looking forward to when I feel 100% with it all. So far the weight loss is going well. I'm a slower loser but, still happy with the results. Good luck with your journey
  15. Queen - some people do lose weight post plastics but alot of times you don't. At first it is the Water retention, and then at least for me my appetite went way up due to the metabolic boost. I was lucky to maintain my weight...haha. Some people get that metabolic boost and then for some strange reason don't get a boost in appetite. Also, I had to very limited activity for 6 long weeks... another reason I am sure that I didn't lose weight post plastics. What difference does 5-6 pounds make? ife - I was a revision from band to sleeve. I had a band for 10 long years and never really did well with it but have maintained a very large weight loss post sleeve. There is revision forum that has alot of info and peoples stories. This forum is the sleeve vets forum. some people use 5:2, which is just an intermittant fasting technique, to get to goal, or to lose a regain. None of us encourage this for sleevers in their first year post op...
  16. I look at this thread and I reminded of all the people who post I lost __Fill in the blank___lbs Gone Forever! It used to make me so sad because I was one of the first people to join this board, revising from a band and I knew I had made the right decision. I lost weight right away because I got revised quickly when I started to have band problems. All of a sudden, between year 2 and 3, I could not lose the little gain I had over the weekend. I was good all week long, ate all Protein drank my Water and the scale did not budge. Pretty soon it was time for the next weekend, and I gained 2 more lbs. Then the holidays came around and I was completely depressed. I lost all my regain with the 5:2 plan rather easily. I didn't have a bf or husband, so I could plan all my meals the way I wanted. All that changed when I got another bf. Popcorn at the movies, him bringing home ice cream and donuts constantly etc and I am right back to where I was. I had back surgery in early Nov. and I have had complications from that, so I can't even exercise. I am determined though. It's either take off some weight or go and buy new clothes. I refuse to give all my really cute and stylish expensive clothes to a thrift shop. I just have to gather all my willpower and stop snacking in the evenings. I hate to say I'm glad other people are now gaining weight back, but i have to say it was so depressing to keep reading how everyone was getting full from 4 bites of food, and they have lost all desire for sweets. We can do this, and we don't have to do it alone!
  17. I don't know why you would consult an attorney or another surgeion unless you think malpractice was done. I think your surgeon did the correct course to fix your henia, then wait to do your revision...... I'm sure you signed your life away before the surgery as well.......

    New To VST

Hey Linda! Welcome to VST ...it's a great group of people here..most in the U.S. so they're celebrating Thanksgiving Day today....i'm sure there will be MANY postings tomorrow (if they aren't all out shopping!). I currently have the lapband and it's not agreeing with me at all. December 14th I'm having it removed and having VSG revision. I'm self pay so it's been a tough decision and lots of number crunching. I don't have insurance so no waiting on lists to have someone else tell me if I could or couldn't do it. It's my body, my decision. Welcome to the site! Tracy

    Unrealistic Weight Goal ??

Your goal weight should be whatever you and your physician agree upon as healthy. My screen name is wannabe21bmi. I've since revised this goal to wanting to be 140 pounds. That's a BMI of 24.8. I will see how I look at 140 pounds (I'm 5'3" as well) and I may go lower. When I tell people that I want to lose at least another 20 pounds they tell me I'm going to be too skinny. I tell them that's only because they are not used to seeing me skinny. My experience in life has been that people who feel good about themselves spend time building others up instead of tearing others down. Be proud of your loss and aim "low" if that is what would make you happy and healthy.
  20. Every doctor/surgeon is different on this one, just like most other things lol. I was wondering the same thing, as I started mushies today after having a revision surgery two weeks ago. Felt kind of stupid calling as I've done this all before and I should know the answer that mine would give me, but called to double check when I couldn't find it in the paperwork. So for me, its eat until you feel satiated (not stuffed). They said that they wouldn't give me a exact amount, cause half a cup or one cup or whatever, may not make me full .. or it may make me too full. Just eat until I was no longer 'hungry'. That works for me *shrugs*. Last time around, one of the hardest things for me was learning the difference between no longer being hungry and being full. Just like alot of other people out there, prebanding, I ate until I hurt quite often. So finding that fine line was difficult. The easiest way for me to do it, was to make sure I really slowed down and took very small bites (ie, if I'm eating with a teaspoon, I may only eat 1/4 of the teaspoon with each bite). My meals last like 30 minutes or more sometimes, just cause I drag it out that long .. but its worked (or it did with the last band). Let's just hope I can use the same common sense this time around lol.

Anyone considering the SLEEVE? MX Dr.'s?

I went to Dr. Aceves in Mexicali. I was a revision from band to sleeve and that is a more complicated procedure than working on a stomach that had never been operated on before. The risks and potential complications are greater for a revision vs. a newbie sleeve. Thus... the only doctor I wanted was Dr. Aceves. OMG NO! Not Huacuz! Adrianne is just one example. I'm still trying to find out if Marty, his DS patient survived or not. I can't find anyone that knows one way or another. By the time Huacuz was done with Marty he had a lacertated liver, had to remove his spleen, his intestines were necrotic, and he was bleeding out. He was in an induced coma in a San Diego hospital trying to undo the damage Huacuz did. Last I heard he has about a 20% chance of survival. Adrianne, if she would have stayed in Tijuana with Huacuz for one more day she would have been dead. She signed herself out of his clinic AMA and got to a US hospital where she too, was in an induced coma for 3 weeks fighting for her life after Huacuz was done with her. The US docs did not believe she would pull through it but thankfully, she did. A sleeve is more invasive than a band, this is all the more reason NOT to have surgery in a clinic! Only a hospital and only by a surgeon that knows what they are doing.

What if the band is slipped?

My band slipped and I'm scheduled for a revision next Monday! I am not looking forward to it, but there is no option, so in I'll go. I suspect that it happened after surgery this summer when I was sick in the postop room from anesthesia. But who knows.
  23. I absolutely love love love Dr. Ku!!! I cried when he left reading. He is the most wonderful surgeon I have ever met. He did my band and a year and a half later he did my hiatal hernia and band revision. U will not be let down with him!!!'
  24. I see my surgeon in 3 weeks at which point I am hoping he will give me the go ahead for a revision from band to RNY. I am hoping I can still get a date this year as my 25th anniversary is mid Feb and hubby and I are wanting to go on a short trip, preferably somewhere warm with sea and sand. I want to be far enough out from surgery that I can eat "regular" food ( as opposed to still being in the soft or puree stages and also don't want to have any other issues. What are the general recommendations for international travel after bariatric surgery?
  25. RickM

    So Many Choices!

The revision that you are contemplating, a RNY to DS is a very complex procedure, so tread very carefully and research, research, research. I haven't been as up on the DS world as I used to be (my wife is 12+ years out on hers,) but 4-5 years ago there were only about a half dozen surgeons in North America that one would trust to do this revision, none of whom were in Mexico. A virgin DS is already a step up in complexity to an RNY or VSG, which is why there are relatively few bariatric surgeons that offer it; the revision from an RNY is another step up from there. The Mx doc with the longest DS experience that I;m aware of is Dr. Gilberto Ungston (he was the only doc doing them reliably in MX 4-5 years ago, and had been working on training others to do the DS. Whether he is tackling the RNY/DS revision, I don't know, but he would be a good place to start if you want to keep it in Mx. You need to find people who have had that specific procedure done by surgeons that you can consider. I have run into a few people who have had it done, as I have dealt with a couple of the Calif surgeons who do the procedure, and it has been very worthwhile, at least if done by the right surgeon. You can't depend on advertising or online profiles of surgeons, as many will say they do this or that procedure and then sell you on what they actually can do once they get you in their office (something like a distal RNY is sometimes offered as "DS-like" revision that doesn't work nearly as well). It gets even trickier when you are self-pay as you don't have an insurance company on your side as an enforcer - a doc saying that he is doing one procedure and billing insurance for it and then doing a different procedure is guilty of insurance fraud, and the companies take a dim view of such things. So, you need to be extra careful when you are self pay, whether in Mx or the US. Good luck in your search....
