  1. So, this week marks a pretty awesome point in my WLS journey. I started my WLS journey with the band at 270lbs, sleeve revision at 263lbs, and today I'm weighing in at 135. I've lost literally half of pre-op self ! ! ! Just thought this is a really awesome moment for me so I thought I would share. I bought new skinny jeans this week from Rue 21, they're a size 8/9 and they are way smaller than my other 9's in the closet. I seriously love my sleeve. For those of you debating this surgery, do it. I couldn't be happy with my sleeve. I couldn't imagine living the life I'm living today.
  2. Count me in! I'm flying to San Diego on Tuesday with surgery scheduled for this Wednesday the 9th. I'm a band to sleeve revision (my band was removed in October). I was almost at goal when my band went kaplooey and I regained all of my weight while fighting the insurance denial. I'm just planning to let that go and be excited about returning to the wonderful world of restriction. Scared and excited both... Britt Anyone with new dates should copy this post and add their name to it..... 3. I had a revision from a lap band to RNY and I know for the first 4 days I had terrible "buyers remorse". But around day 5 I felt like I was gonna make it, and every day was better than the day before. It's totally normal to think "what the hell did I just do to myself???" Almost everyone of us have thought that right after surgery. Your doctor should have you on a PPI for a few months after your surgery. I had heartburn for about a month after mine. Be patient with yourself on the fluid drinking and don't force it. It will get easier. Hang in there, YOU GOT THIS! It WILL bet better, I promise...
  4. Hi all- just checking in and trying to stay honest on this site. I'm down over 30 pounds since my band to sleeve revision and so far still feeling pretty good. I continue to have those moments where my head hunger starts grabbing my attention. I've been doing lots of reading and something really jumped out at me last night. I know that somewhere when I was pretty young I started using food to numb myself out. So I really believe I used food to survive or make it through some of the issues in my childhood. The author I am reading wrote that we sometimes use a canoe to cross the river...but it's not necessary to strap the canoe to your back once you cross the river and carry it around with you. It's fine to leave the canoe by the riverside. So for today....I am thinking that I have crossed my river.....and I need to remember that I don't need to carry it the canoe with me....my smaller stomach has not totally elminated my fears and needs.....

I Didn't Sign Up For This....

I might would consider doing the same if it were a choice for me but I'm pretty sure my insurance won't cover anymore surgeries dealing with weight loss surgery. I am doing everything my doctor says right now and hopefully it'll fix itself but I'm terribly sore since he took out all the fluid. I think maybe the soreness comes from it trying to heal. I'm scared to death that I'm going to get big as a house so I'm very careful to count every single calorie that goes into my body. Hopefully I can be really strong and things will fix and I can start gradually getting fills again. I am scared to think of it not fixing itself! I'm sorry to hear you had a similar issue but I'm glad for you being able to revise to something else. I wish you the best of luck and hope that it works out much better for you! I haven't had constant diarrhea but I have gained almost all of my weight back. I'm working hard to get it off on my own now.... what other choice do I really have?

    Getting Started

My band surgery was performed by Dr. Nye in Pensacola, FL, and my revision to sleeve surgery was performed by Dr. Michael Michel at Eglin AFB, FL. My husband is active duty Air Force, and both procedures have been covered 100% by our insurance. I haven't heard of that specific surgeon. There's a couple of ladies from LA on here, Ash, and I can't for the life of me remember the other member. You may contact Ash (hit member list link at the top and find her, shoot her a message on here to find out who she used).
  7. I followed my liquid diet and never cheated. It was a real struggle but I wanted my liver in good shape. The day before surgery I had to have an endoscope because I was a band revision. After it was done my doctor ask if everything was ok or if I needed anything. I laughed and said yeah I need to eat. He shocked the heck outta me and said ok, you can eat today, but nothing after midnight!!!! It was a great day!
  8. First...welcome to this site....you have really been through the war. Like you I am a band to sleeve revision and I can honestly way I am grateful every day I removed my band. I had too many issues with throwing up and my acid reflux got so bad my vocal chords were damaged. I lost my voice for 6 weeks. Having to run to the bathroom at a resturant became a regular issue for me. I lost a about 80 pounds with my band and gained 30 back when I was unfilled. Even unfilled I had foods that got stuck. I was back to 301 pounds when I decided I was one of the people the band wasn't going to work for....I have subsequently heard of a number of people who like you....had issues...like you. There are a ton of people on here who have better long term food advice than me...but I for one believe going slow is a good idea. THere are something I still haven't tried but I can do bread and some veggies as well...I still have 90'sh pounds to lose and you are very close to your goal.....sending you all good things for healing and good health!
  9. Go to www.obesityhelp.com. I used that site a lot when I was revising to my RNY. They cover all surgeries there and can be very helpful. Good luck with your decision, Nancy.

    My First "Real" Fill

So my first fill was 3.5 CD's in my 11cc realize band during my port revision surgery (my port flipped). I had a little restriction then but still could overeat until yesterday. I got another 3.5 cc's on Monday afternoon and was not hungry after I ate 2 bowls of Soup and about 10 crackers 2 hrs later. I didn't eat anything else the rest of the day because I didn't even think about food once! It was the first time in my life I didn't think about food all day! Then I ate soup, cheese, and chili yesterday and weighed in 2 lbs lighter this morning! Today I ate supper and got this pressure in my throat which is I guess my new "full" feeling and stopped eating even though I didn't get that old satisfied feeling I used to get after binge eating. Its sad to think I have to wait for that full feeling as it takes time to pass thru my band, wasn't what I expected to feel, but is uncomfortable enough to remind me of my eating disorder and that I need this tool!
  11. I had RNY gastric bypass surgery 30 months ago. Two days after surgery when I left the hospital I was taken off all my Type 2 diabetes meds and about a couple weeks later I was off all my high blood pressure medicines. I no longer had sleep apnea and the GERD went away. These conditions all remained in remission ever since. I lost almost 120 pound and kept the weight off. The main reason why I choose RNY gastric surgery was to take care of my health issues. If you have GERD, they recommend this type of surgery. Also my position was that if I underwent the knife once, I did not want to repeat the process over and over again. RNY had one of the lowest revision rates. I put my experiences with the surgery in a couple short articles. If you want to read them, here are the links. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf

    One year fills

Probably, but sometimes Surgeon's need to tweak things a little. I have 5 cc. I have had 5 cc for about 2 years, but had a slip and needed to have everything removed and then a surgical revision. He had to remove everything, but when he put fill back in, I am still at 5 cc. Does that make sense? I sometimes ramble in teh early mornings. Best wishes, Karen
  13. Here's my list Fish oil lemon flavor (yum) trying to fix my low good cholesterol Citracal petites 2 Breakfast 2 lunch Vitamin D 1000 IU (I work with breastfeeding moms and here in Illinois almost all women are deficient) Gummy multivites 2 Gummy B complex (new). I had trouble with the yellow pills. Couldn't stomach the taste And Bariatric chewable Iron 60 mg (I was deficient and am now weaning down. Also the gummies don't have iron which I somehow missed) And my allergy meds Please remember I am banded awaiting revision. I expect these will change slightly since I tolerate most pills for now.
  14. Sorry this happened to you, the lap band has caused respiratory issues in MANY lap banders when acid reflux gets so bad, the acid reflux can get very dangerous if not treated with removing saline and medications, timely, and as you can see cause respiratory issues, many have also reported aspiration pneumonia from long term reflux and band slippage. Please be advised the Sleeve CAN cause horrible reflux as well and MANY now are having to revise to the Bypass if the reflux get really bad with the Sleeve, since there is no turning back after you get your stomach removed. I hope you can find relief and answers, good luck.
  15. Ash I know how you feel when it comes to setting a goal. I set mine at 150, then after I had my revision done I changed it to 140. With all that said now that I'm almost to 150 I think 140 will be too little. Give yourself some time and you will know when it is right to stop. Good luck and happy losing!

    OK, so now what??!!

I just want to cry. Scratch that, i have cried. Today is 4 months since surgery (sort of, since I had surgery 10/29). I had a great first two months. Felt good, everything was going smoothly. Then the acid reflux started. A bit at first, then worse, even on 2 Nexium a day. OK, I could handle that. Then, about a month ago, the nausea started. I just can't deal with it. Seems to be getting worse every day. I feel worse now than I ever did before surgery. I can eat less now than when I started on solid foods. This is the first time I haven't been able to hit my protein goals since day 3 after surgery. I even have trouble getting in all of my liquids because I can't drink for forever after eating (maybe 1.5-2 hours). And I have to eat All.The.Time because I can eat so little at a time now. I'm doing my best, but the nurse is starting to worry they need to put in a PICC line to get fluids/nutrition in (luckily, she told me today she doesn't think that is necessary yet. Had an upper GI. They found a hernia, but saw no GERD. I got a hold of my doc's nurse. She'd talked to my doc. They don't really know what is causing it. She said they could do an endoscopy, but that he thinks he won't really find anything new. And he doesn't want to repair the hernia (again) until I lose more weight. Doc apparently wants to revise to bypass. But, for a number of reasons, I don't. Particularly since they don't really know what's wrong and can't tell me the bypass will help. I mean, I can barely eat now - and if bypass doesn't fix it I'll be even more malnourished than I am now. So, for now, he's prescribed a different reflux med, given me anti-nausea meds, and OK'ed me to lower my protein goals (protein supplements REALLY make me sick). my nurse keeps telling me that this isn't the rest of my life and they'll figure it out. But, I'm still worried and frustrated and sick as a dog. I'm not really looking for suggestions, or reasons I'm wrong not to want the bypass. My two close friends are having family emergencies and I don't want to burden them now. So I just need a space to let it out. Thanks. And really glad I have an appointment with my therapist on Tuesday.

    Band Slippage Blues

I had my lapband placed in 2009. Lost almost all of my weight (111 lbs) and then it slipped. They defilled me to see if it would fix itself. It didn't. I was told it wasn't surgical and that "it was all up to me" now - the lapband was done with it's job. After a year, and 30 extra lbs, I decided to revise to the sleeve. My insurance paid for it cuz it was a lapband complication. Had my sleeve revision in July. It took my dr an extra 30 minutes to dig my band outa my stomach. Not sure what would've happened if it had stayed in there any longer. So happy with my sleeve. It's going pretty slow (lost 22 lbs in 3 mths). I knew it would come off slower cuz I started lower (174), and I'm only 23 lbs from my goal of 130. I've only vomited once since being sleeved (vs almost everyday- even while totally unfilled with the band) No more pain while eating either. My dr doesn't recommend the band to anyone anymore. He fixes more complication than sees those with none. While I'm thankful that my band allowed me to lose over 100 lbs, I'm also thankful that its out and I'm on my way back down. Good luck with ur decision! Marci

Calling all who had surgery in MEXICO

What type of surgery are you planning on having? I had a revision from the band to the sleeve a little over 2 weeks in Mexico with Dr. Aceves. I can attest to the fact that the care was excellent, the hospital was clean and modern, and the surgery was a success.
  20. I contacted two surgeons in NY and they were both willing to remove my band and/or revise me to RNY, which I chose. My dr. is Dr. Shawn Garber, and he answers all emails within 24 hours. Perhaps he can direct you to a doc nearer to your home. his email is garber@nybariatric.com good luck,

am i the only big fat failure here?

I agree you are not a failure, you just have veered off course. I too had a revision. During my weight loss phase I always ate protein first, tracked everything I ate, never ate takeaways, drank water, exercised. I do all the same things now during maintenance. Takeaway foods may be doing you in; high in calories, fat, sodium and some times fillers. Go back to basics and set goals for yourself. You have to be accountable AND weigh yourself : I weigh most every day, this way I am accountable and if I go up a couple pounds I watch what I eat the next couple of days. I have read that those that keep their weight off(from any method of weight loss) weigh themselves often. You can do this!!!!!!

    Excited and nervous

So as some of you know I started at 540 pounds October of 2015. I had surgery May 29, 2016 at 480 pounds and today (March 23, 2017) I am 303.6 pounds. I am mostly happy with my progress but am plagued with lots of extra skin. Even though I am not a year out from my surgery I met with a plastic surgeon for my stomach hang. It bothers me a lot and is pretty painful. The surgeon gave me 2 options. 1. I could wait until goal or 2. I could get have surgery to remove the hang now and have a revision later. I chose to try and have insurance cover it now and get a revision later because it bothers me so much. They submitted it to insurance and I got the call that they approved it!! My surgery date is June 5th! I'm very excited but also a bit nervous. The surgeon said mine would be the largest he has ever done and I would need at least 4 drains in for about 4 weeks. I'm also nervous that by June I might be closer to goal and it might be silly to get it now when I would have to get it again so soon. It's really hard to tell my rate of weight loss though once I get closer to goal. Overall I am excited and just wanted to share my good news with everyone!

Scheduled surgery while waiting for approval?

Mine wouldn't even contemplate setting a date before approval. And it's a good thing they didn't, since my revision approval took forever because SAMBA/Cigna was being a pain in the you-know-what about approving it. It took almost 3 months for just the submission/denial/appeal/denial/appeal/peer-to-peer/approval process, not including any of the pre-submission hoops that I had to jump through. Now I have to do my medical clearances, but I'm hoping to talk them into setting a date so that I can request time off of work and get my mom a plane ticket to come and stay with me.
  24. I haven't had it happen personally but I have heard it happen to others. Did the doc attempt to use a fluoroscope? My doctor's office used it to locate my port's exact position so they didnt have to prick me more than once after I had a revision surgery and was still sore in the abdomen.

    Weird Chest Feeling..

Hello Neka, Pink is correct and I'll try to add some thoughts. When you have surgery they put CO2 gas into your abdomen to expand the area so the doctors can visualize and manipulate your organs safely. Although they do remove the gas, there will be residual gas left in the abdomen cavity. This will rise (it is gas afterall) into your chest cavity causing a great deal of discomfort. Some people use heating pads for some relief. Some other things to do: stay on top of your pain meds to assist you with this discomfort, continue to breath deeply even if it causes pain (we are all at risk for things like pneumonia after surgery and so we have to address those issues along with pain management), and stay mobile. The more you move the more blood flow the quicker your body can eliminate the gas through reabsorption. As for filling full with liquids. Yep, welcome to bandland. Right now you are in an acute phase after surgery where there is inflammation at the site of the band. This is causing a sensation of restriction. Hopefully this is what you'll feel as you get fills and try to achieve 'green'. You will see varied experiences from other bandsters who say they feel no restriction and those who can't get their daily allotment of cals or fluids in. There's many reasons for this as well 1) some docs fill the band during surgery with up to 3cc of fluid some do not put any in leaving their patients at 0cc to start, 2) our anatomy is different. Some of our esophogus' are wider than others so the band is not a one size fit all gadget after all , 3) different bands, different surgical techniques, excessive manipulation, additional surgical revisions (ie hernia) blah blah can all have a slight effect on what we sense post op. What you are feeling is normal. Focus on the resistance and learning to eat/drink to the band's comfort. Don't force fluids if you feel restriction. Reduce volume to sips if need be. As inflammation goes down you'll feel less restriction and more capable of drinking/eating with ease. Hopefully this carries you into mushies because others are postop day 2 and feeling wide open and starved. Good luck hon
