New here..band to VSG revision 4/24/13
CowgirlJane replied to jlobyxmas's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Ms antiband says it well! I was afraid of the surgery and more afraid of failure. I kept my band secret but felt shame about the lousy weight loss AND all the vomiting for 10 bad years. I wrestled with the revision decision for a long time. Reading this forum helped me build confidence. A doctor told me that I was one that could make it work because "I never gave up". That was empowering and has influenced how public I have been about my sleeve too. I have so much empathy for those standing on the edge..trying to believe that it might work this time. A key difference is I am just so DONE with food being what pleases me!! -
RNY - lapband...which way to go???
Cherylita replied to Hollins2003's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Jennifer, I just wanted to offer an example of a friend of mine who had RNY. She had it about 3yrs ago. I hadn't seen her in a while and met up with her this past Feb. She had lost close to 150lbs. I was excited for her but I was quickly corrected. She was very disappointed with her experience. She told me about her dumping syndrome and how she feels she was much happier being overweight than she is now. I have been looking into RNY and LapBand for quite a while now-I have about 200 to lose. The nurse practitioner told me that if I want to work for the weightloss, the band was an excellent choice for me but if I wanted quick weightloss go with RNY. So I started researching. I have found this...LapBand has PBing, sliming and slippage(these are the complaints I have seen most often). There is also the possibility of erosion. With RNY you get..malabsorption, lifetime of taking vitamins, iron and other nutritional supplements, dumping syndrome (chills, cold sweat, nausea, vomiting etc), weight regain (because once you stretch your pouch-the stomach is elastic-there isn't much you can do to get it to where it was. True, there is RNY Revision but that should only be done as a major necessity. If you really want to see some of the effects of RNY just go to youtube.com and put gastric bypass in the search box. There are alot of RNY pts that have documented their process. Sure most of them say they would "do it again an a heartbeat" but to hear some of the stuff they are going through..my thought is "Why?" One lady I read about even bragged about her RNY but then blogged about all the times she has gone to the ER and how sick she has been and how she is actually down to 97lbs (no lie) because she can't keep anything down! Mind you I have also read that some folks with the Lapband have it removed because of slippage or it was too tight. One person even complained of too much restriction because they couldn't go out to dinner and eat like they used to..what's that about? I know this is long winded but these are things other's have said. I am still going through the getting approved phase so all I have to offer is my opinions and things other folks have said. Keep us posted C -
RNY - lapband...which way to go???
Hollins2003 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have been lurking for awhile, reading posts and doing research. I am about one month out from my surgery date (July 2nd). My surgeon (Dr. Maher in Richmond, VA) originally recommended laparoscopic gastric bypass during my initial consultation. He suggested this for two separate reasons: 1) the amount of weight I need to lose (130 pounds) and 2) the adjustments needed for the lap band. While he is willing to do either surgery he felt that in the long run gastric bypass would be more successful. When I met with him I was dead set on lap band. However, reading about the complications, adjustments, etc. I am beginning to waver. I feel that the surgery for the lap band is safer and less complicated...but I trust my surgeon 100%. He has been performing the gastric bypass and lap band for a long time and has had zero mortalities for either surgery. I am beginning to wonder if he is correct...maybe the gastric bypass would be a better option. I am not looking for a quick fix..rather I am looking for one and ONLY one surgery that will provide a tool to maintain weight loss. My fear is that I will not be successful with the lap band and will opt for a revision to gastric bypass. Any advice, suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I just want to make sure I make the best decision for me! Jennifer:mellow: -
Finding The Right Plastic Surgeon
Jachut replied to Puttingmyselffirst's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Here in Melbourne, which I guess is a small city by world standards, I think its pretty well known who the good surgeons are - and some of them become quasi celebrities anyway. There's word of mouth which works well anywhere in the world. I asked for a referral a few years ago to a well known guy but never went ahead with any surgery. This time, since I was also looking to have inguinal hernias repaired, I asked my colorectal surgeon to refer me on for that and to revise the scar from my bowel resection. Given that my colorectal surgeon i very well respected and a leader in his field, I trust that his referral will be to a respectable, well qualified plastic surgeon. I met the guy and liked him and the word of my colorectal surgeon is good enough for me, so I went with it. Perhaps your lapband surgeon can recommend people who work with bariatric patients or you know other people who have had successful surgeries. -
I have ben banded for almost 9 years now with minimal success. I've flat out abused the band ever since the honeymoon was over. I'm really trying to get back and do things right. I ran into a video on how things are supposed to work. Not bad mouthing my surgeon, but I think this is info a patient needs to know. They may be doing a better job these days of explaining things IDK. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qa3Lwt6ElIs My question is fairly simple yet has 2 parts. 1- Has anyone ever recovered from a stretched out pouch? 2- Is there a way to shrink it back and restore the nerves at the top of the stomach? I lost my job shortly after my last doc visit in 2015. That said, I've not had decent insurance until now. I am working full time now and have pretty decent insurance. I have plans to get to the LB doctor. A revision is not in the cards right now due to just starting this job and not being able to take time off. I appreciate any and all advise!

Beginning my Journey
AutumnBlueCarmen replied to Lissa's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Lissa, I'm so glad you are here. IMHO I think your surgeon is 100% right. My BFF had lap band surgery and she is a physician. She has had lots of problems with it. I was actually scheduled to do lap band on July 22 and backed out and changed to sleeve. If you look at a lot of peoples posts on here there are A LOT of people who revise the lap band to sleeve. I do not want to have to mess with that. In my thinking....the lap band is a piece of plastic...with bladders and tubes. It WILL at some point wear out...just like plastic does. We are talking plastic inside a body...our body doesn't just sit there either. This plastic is going to have to go through fills and unfills and the movement of our body. If you have the flu and are throwing up you have to have the fluid removed so you don't make it move. Then after you are done having the flu you have to go and get the fills slowly put back in and pretty much start all over again. There are just so many possibilities of problems with the lap band. ((GEEZE I HOPE I DONT GET SUED))!!!! So anyway, that is my 10 cents. I hope that helps. Good luck with everything. I hope to see you around and hear more about your journey! -
LapBand Removal Revision to Sleeve
TQUAD64 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
On November 11, 2008 I was banded and lost 40 pounds. I loved my band until 2015 when my port became painful unrelated to the fills. The pain was everyday for the past 8 years. My healthcare Team was not able to determine why I’m having continuous pain in the port. Anyway, on February 1, 2023 I’m having the band removed and the gastric sleeve done on the same day. I am not afraid of the surgery because this will be number 16, but I am concerned about is the port. I am hoping the doctor will see what had been causing me port pain. -
Feel Like The Drs Aren't Listening...

Thanks Izuri for your reply..I did email the drs office for a different RX, so we will see what the day brings. Christine, anythings possible with this crapband...lol I vomit often from things getting stuck. Things are just so inconsistant with this thing. I don't have any reflux or pressure like in the past. However, I was thinking that the awful taste in my mouth and the "burning, churning" feeling in my stomach could be acid reflux??? I don't know but I hope I get some answers soon. I might be way off, but I almost feel like my LB dr is brushing things off because she knows I want the lapband taken out and revised to a sleeve....and I feel like maybe she thinks I am making issues up to move the process along, which is definatley not the case!!! Hopefully I can get some answers today -
also i just told my boss what i found out and he said 'humph you could fight it' and walked out. his wife had gastric bypass gee if she needs a revision she wont be covered either. i thought that was rather rude for him to not care. i did email the state of TN insurance dept. and ask them so we'll see what they say. i guess i'll have to pay cash $$$$ for my barium swallow. michelle

Sleve Revision 12/5....nervous
Hop_Scotch replied to msjovanna's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There are a few people about who have had revisions, hopefully someone will offer their experience. Hope it all goes well for you ! -
I'm more scared of going to my gyno than getting fills. The needle poking is easy as pie, it hurts when they pushed on my port (which might be since it was flipped). And I've been jabbed multiple times, each time. As for fills, it seems to be common that the first fill doesn't do very much in the way of what you can eat. Since my first 4 fills didn't 'really' fill me up, when they revised my port and he filled me while I was under, he put 1cc (which is 'aggressive'-for him), and I have to say I feel like I'm at a great restriction. liquids go down with NO problem. I'm intolerant of breads at the moment.. and I can only eat 1/4c of food at once (finally!). I'm really happy to finally get to this point. I don't miss being able to eat a lot, I've been struggling to find this restriction for months.

How long was your revision procedure?
timarland replied to timarland's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm hoping this will be more the case for me, versus the 4+ hour ones I've heard of here. Looks like you're down quite a bit in the short time since your revision. Nice! -

How long was your revision procedure?
timarland posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi all - sorry if this is an annoying repost, but I'm 1.5 months pre-op and I'm trying to get a general sense of how long people are generally in the OR? I think my band procedure was about 45 minutes. I know a lot of the length depends on complexity which depends on what they find when they get in there, but any stories would be appreciated! -
How long was your revision procedure?
NewChiGirl replied to timarland's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Really depends on what's going on inside. I had it done in one procedure and had a TON of scar tissue and it took him like 4.5 hours. Most of it was removing the adhesions. I had my band in for 9.5 years. Good luck! Band to Vsg revision: 5/23/17 HW: 315+ Starting weight: 294 Surgery Day: 281 Current: 226 Goal 170 -
Someone very close to me is 10 years out, has had and kept her success and never had a revision to bypass! HW 289 SW 262 VSG 5/2/18 Kaiser, Ontario - Dr. Chin

Changing My Name To ... Plateau Patty, Grrrr
4ALongerLife posted a blog entry in 4ALongerLife's Blog
So I'm playing the game that I hate. It's "up a lb, down a lb" which is followed by "up a half lb., down a half lb" in my life. Does anyone else experience this? I think I'm cursed. I swear all I see is people losing more weight and I compare myself. Then I think "hello stop your whining you durn cry baby." lol... just being honest. Here's the deal tho... I'm 10 weeks out and after receiving one of two hospital bills for my complications (I had aspriation pneumonia and a leak/abscess after my surgery, then revised surgery)... I'm just really wondering if this was worth it. Don't get me wrong, I know it was but.... if I knew then, what I knew now of my experience... would I still do it? In all undue honesty, yes, probably so. I've been fat since I was about 6 months old. Seriously, I have pix, I should scan them and post them. Not that anyone reads my posts Ok rambling, I just feel lonely in this journey and I'm a bit lost. I don't have a NUT, right now I can't afford one, my new insurance plan doesn't go into affect until June 1.... maybe I'm stuck in pity party central mode tonight, my apologies. Writing is supposed to help, heck how I used to cope isn't an option anymore (hello carbs and sweets, remember those days?). I just wish I could let the worry over all of this go. It's made me feel more anxious than ever and I was craving a big ol' cookie today, so I indulged... too much but it's logged into myfitnesspal dag nab it! But how do I cope with this? IDK... I went to the gym and that's helped some. Otherwise, I type in a journal here (which reads like a bunch of mess that no one reads, damn pity party again grrr). Who else can I talk to about this? Honestly there are very few here that I've spoken to and surely my biatching rambling session is running the rest off. Sigh.... Well SHOULD anyone read this, and IF you do pray, even if you don't know me... please say a prayer for me. I'm being super hard on myself, worrying too much and looking at a few things that are stressing me out seriously (money being the top worry). I'm attempting to fight the demons that got me in this mess with weight as it is, I don't really need more items to push me into failure - I'm struggling enough playing the up/down game enough as is, aren't I? I don't want to be "undone" after having gone through all of this..... Signed, Not the super sleever poster child of positivity ... my apologies.... Pity party is officially over on 5/19, I swear!- 7 comments

APPROVED, Revision from Lap Band, need help
MacMadame replied to heftynetty's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
A recent study was released showing that bariatric surgery is no riskier than any other routine surgery. Large-Scale Analysis Finds Bariatric Surgery Relatively Safe People have this idea that the band is somehow "safe" and all other bariatric surgery is "dangerous" but this is a misconception. There is a risk to all surgeries, even the band, but bariatric surgery is pretty safe comparatively. It's not dying on the operating table that you have to worry about. If your husband wouldn't worry about something happening to you if you got your appendix out, he shouldn't worry about this. As for having more scar tissue, they'll cut away most of the stomach so you'll actually be losing some of your scar tissue. OTOH, doing a sleeve on a scarred stomach will increase your risk of leaks a bit so you should be very careful. Also, depending on where the scar tissue is, the surgeon may prefer to do RnY on you. It's something you should talk to him about. There are a lot of "what ifs" involved in a revision so you want to be prepared for them. -
APPROVED, Revision from Lap Band, need help
Bornagainbabe replied to heftynetty's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Janette, I had open lap band to VSG revision surgery two weeks ago and I, like you, was having my doubts right up until they wheeled me down to surgery. Open surgery is when they cut your stomach open rather than doing it laparascopically and it is usually preferred if you have had surgery before. I had had several operations on my stomach and my surgeon told me from the start that he would need to open me up. I had had my band repositioned last year and then it slipped again and that's why I came to the decision to have the VSG and, like you again, all my family were concerned. I won't say they were against it but they were worried about the surgery mainly as a result of all the media attention. But, as has already been said ALL surgery carries some risk. You really need to discuss this with the surgeon if you can and find out how much revision surgery he has done. Here in the UK there aren't all that many bariatric surgeons, in comparison to the US and elsewhere, and our services are absolutely swamped with people wanting surgery. My particular surgeon has got the monopoly on it in the Yorkshire area and has carried out loads and loads of operations and is held in wide regard across the whole country. He had also carried out my band surgery and abdominal surgery so he was well familiar with me and my personal situation. He was absolutely confident that performing the sleeve op was the right thing for me and as a result I had to put my trust in him as I would most certainly have regained all my previously lost weight. He did point out the complications to me and did tell me that there were more risks involved, but, as I say he was absolutely confident in his ability to perform the op successfully and help me. Talk to your surgeon, find out how much revision surgery he has done and then take it from there. I am two weeks out and am fine. I have had very little pain from my VSG op and am progressing well with the diet. And don't worry about open surgery either. I have had loads of open surgery and although I have a nice big scar running right down my front it is nothing compared to all the extra weight I was carrying and still am! Good luck in your decision. I know it's not easy. Love Helenxxx -
I'm really clueless about bands. Can someone explain to me briefly why people have revisions? Why is the band so awful? I'm being nosey, that's all. :-) Thanks!

I will be a revision from the lapband, which was put in by Tricare, my surgeons nurse is concerned that BCBS wont pay to have the band removed. Has anyone been in this situation? Also I just started going by to the surgeon's office to get fluid out, I had been miserable for a year, throwing up and discussed changing to the sleeve. I had regained the weight I had lost. The office wants to have me make several appointment before the submit my paperwork to the insurance company. I have done my nutrition visit and my psy visit. I was so depressed today because now I don't have a clue when I will get this band out so that I can get a second chance. Has anyone experienced this? Did you get approved. I would love to heard some feedback. The office also said she can submit my paperwork now but if I don't get approved, I only have one appeal. Should I wait and make several appointment or try now, I am so ready to get started. Thanks

Hi everyone, I just received my insurance approval for the sleeve on Friday. I am really struggling with the decision to go forward or not. I have a good friend and her and I decided to do this journey together so we could support each other. She had a lap band years ago that failed so she was doing a revision to the sleeve. Her insurance approved hers sooner than me (different surgeon too) so she wound up going in on Oct 16 to have hers done. Well, I am sorry to report that the poor thing is STILL in the hospital, almost 1 month later! She was in the ICU for 2 weeks of that time and nearly died. She had a bowel perforation, 2 esphoghus tears, leaks, ICU delirium, and massive infections. The doctors have said that when she is able to be released she is going to require extensive physical therapy due to the weakness from being bedridden. Sitting here watching this unfold has been terrifying and needless to say, has me thinking "hell no". I am so confused 😔
