    Dumping On Thanksgiving, No Bueno

I've never dumped. I may be ignorant, but I thought dumping was associated with the bypass, not the sleeve. I have slimed after eating too much or something too greasy, where saliva just poured out of my face. I felt sick, but not very, just a little. I only let that happen twice, learned my lesson. Truly, it sounds like a stomach bug to me. What do the rest of you think?

    Pre op liquid diet

Lindseyzzzme, My doctor told me the same thing, but after all the research I've done you should do the 2 week before liquids, because it shrinks your liver. I'm having my surgery Sept 26th. Where are you having your surgery at? I'm having the gastric sleeve, why do you choose the bypass vs sleeve?
  3. Well I was all set on the LapBand and then I met with my nutrionist who started to sway me towards the gastric, because I will lose more, and lose it faster. So I met with the other surgeon and I told them I wanted to ponder my decision and so I went to work and talked to three people who had had gastric bypass (2) and one person who had the lapband. One of the two people who had the gastric looked sickly and emactiated and the other one was ok. However, she told me she did not "mean to" lose all that weight but she did, the bottom line is that you can't control the weight loss. How much or how fast, and with lap band you can control both so I decided to go that way. I have 200 lbs to lose and that seems to be a challenge on the lapband, but I know it's possible, So that's why I chose to have it...August 16th is my surgery date.
  4. I've had my band for 13 years. Yes, I "throw up" almost regularly. Can't eat bread hardly, fruits, french fries, etc. I lost 50 pounds and 18 months ago had a tummy tuck. The placement of the port has cause me ALOT of pain the last 9 months! It is now trying to poke through. A stitch has come through and I've also lost another 25 pounds. I'm so happy where I am weight wise and only have 15 pounds to go! Now I'm talking with a surgeon about removal. I'M SCARED TO DEATH! I DON'T EVER WANT TO BACK TO BEING OBESE EVER AGAIN!!!! Not even overweight! I've only read posts of other people removing the devices and gaining a BUNCH of weight!!! I'm thinking of revising, but 13 years is a long time to have something foreign in your body! I'm thinking of just asking him to move the port... Thoughts?
  5. I find that very interesting my surgeons nurse Practitioner was almost MAD when I said i wanted to do the band and not gastric bypass. She told me about what a failure I will be if i do it... and then when the surgeon came in i explained that i am leaning towards the band and he didn't either seem to pleased. I recall someone once told me that surgeons prefer gastric bypass over the band because they do the surgery, make the $$, and never need to see you again. Whereas with the lap band they have to devote a lot of time on fills which is not a real moneymaker (btw, to me that sounds insane...)
  6. Does this go for the mini gastric bypass as well?

Could we be surgery date buddies?

I ask my doctor about the DS. And he won't even discuss it with me he says I don't weigh enough to have that one. So I am getting the mini gastric bypass. As I was already sleeve 3 years ago lost 60 lbs but gained back 30. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using BariatricPal mobile app

  9. my surgeon tried to get me to the bypass. my ins does not cover the sleeve and i was not interested in cutting my stomach. i admit when he was telling me, i felt he wanted me to get the bypass but i stayed true to what i wanted. i know all surgeries run a risk but this one just made me feel the most comfortable and i was honestly too scared to get the bypass. i had my band with plication done on june 6th and lost 40 pounds so far but i gained back alittle self esteem, yeah, i made the right decision.

    Pre op liquid diet

My surgery date is August 26. I'm having gastric bypass. I lost 26 lbs by changing my diet in the last 3 months. Today I started the liquid diet. My stomach was very upset this morning. I had a Premier Protein shake for Breakfast and felt horrible. Maybe it's mental because I consumed those for breakfast sometimes before today. For lunch today I had a chicken Soup unjury shake with 1% milk, which tasted like chicken broth. I'm also drinking Water, as much as I want. I figure that may make me feel fuller during the day. I'm on a full liquid diet for two weeks, which includes pudding and yogurt, but most items are sweet, not savory so I'm feeling a bit urpy and hungry. I think a lot of the hunger can be attributed to the reason why I'm overweight, which is that I just like to eat......anything. I'm totally addicted to food. I'm a Midwestern gal and love my food! The doctor told me that my taste buds may change after surgery and I will probably not crave the things I crave now. I sure hope he's right, but just in case, I have scheduled an appointment with a psychologist to help me with my addiction and relationship with food. I sure hope I can stick to this liquid diet!
  11. I started out at 232 and between the liquid diet and then the gastric bypass, I went to 210. Now I’m 5 weeks post op and haven’t lost a pound since week 3. This can’t be it, right?!

    Hiatal hernia and gastric sleeve

My surgeon did do a EGD. He did not find a hernia, and because I never had GERD, he assured me that the odds of me developing acid reflux were “extremely unlikely”. They’ve learned a lot since my surgery- it was so long ago. The real question is - how many of your surgeons patients suffer from it? What is the exact percent - not a guesstimate. How do they keep track? How do they address it when it happens? My surgeon told me “it’s really rare”, and his partner recently wrote a paper (2020) stating 30% of their patients ended up on PPI’s. That’s not “rare” to me. And the practice I went to was highly regarded and considered “the best” in California. I did extensive research. Unfortunately the internet wasn’t what it is today. When patients started begging to get a bypass because the pain/medicine side effects were too great, I think some Doctors started listening and altered techniques. Ask if he automatically puts you on a PPI after surgery. Not a good sign. Many put you on PPI’s, and are completely out of the picture when you start developing PPI problems - dependency months , years down the line. Some doctors attach the sleeve to something else in the body to keep it from slipping up and causing a hernia, some do a “hernia repair” using mesh. Some will tell you upfront - you should have bypass because.... always get a second opinion (and a third), and find a surgeon who doesn’t downplay it. I recently listens to a surgeon giving a presentation at a medical conference. He advised his fellow surgeons to decline sleeves to certain patients because “the reflux would keep them banging at your door”. He jokingly suggested that you send patients with HH or GERD to “your enemy” if they want the sleeve. This was a video from 2019. I am grateful for those door bangers, because while I just suffered silently- they demanded help and brought awareness. They are hero’s. Please share your story and your surgeon, especially if you are PPI free.
  13. Wow. First of all...great job. You seem like you have done your research and are mentally prepared (which is the most important!) Forget what the dietitian/nutritionist said about herbal life. If you really want to follow this to the T then I suggest you seek another opinion. My dietitian gave me a meal plan for a person having a bypass, and said it was the same thing. Totally different, I threw the paper as soon as I got outta that place. Your mind and heart are on the right place, everything else will fall into place. Congrats on making the first steps to your new you and journey. If you have any questions feel free to message me.

3 years post VSG to RNY

Hi! I had a revision of my sleeve (VSG) to RNY on 8/29/22 for a hiatal hernia repair and severe acid reflux. Since then I feel like I’m doing okay and no longer have any acid reflux symptoms. My only concern is every time I drink something cold to room temperature my stomach hurts really bad. I can sip on warm bone broth and that doesn’t seem to bother me much. I know I’m just out of surgery and healing but should I still be feeling pain in my stomach almost two weeks out? Any insight as to why this is happening would be greatly appreciated! 😊

    Recovery from bypass vs sleeve

I'm really glad to hear this. I've been really worried, but at least now I know the restriction will kick in with solid foods. People said that about the sleeve and it never happened for me, so I'm hoping it actually will with the bypass.

    My first group support meeting

Hi, My mom had the gastric bypass, and wishes she had the band. She lost a dangerous amount of bone density, 60%, now she is on daily injections she does herself to stimulate bone growth. Also, nutrition is a huge problem for gastric bypass. I like the band, I view it just as permanent, but without many of the irreversable issues.

    My first group support meeting

Aubrie - I had the same problem when I attended my first support group meeting, everyone had Gastric Bypass. Well, I just started my own support group in Tulsa, we just had our 2nd meeting last night. It went good and I know as time grows, I will get more members to attend. I just posted it on yahoo groups under Oklahomabandsters@yahoo.com. I bet yahoo has a group in your state - you could maybe find some people and start your own. I have mine the first Monday of every month and I have it at the Barnes & Noble coffee shop (its free). It is working out pretty good, I've had two meetings so far and they are so much more personable than the one my dr. has.

    Killeen/Ft Hood?

I don't mind....I chose Lap-band because it wasn't as invasive or as extreme as gastric, and I'm obese but not extremely obese. Plus I've known a few people who had bypass and there is only one who has kept most of the weight off. Plus, two of my aunts had the Lap-band done, both of them lost about 80lbs. in a year and haven't had any problems. I had to get an unfill because I got overfilled, I couldn't even keep Water down (and water was all I had all day) so they took all of the Fluid out of my band. But the doctor's office called today, and he wants me to come in on Wednesday to start getting filled back up. No big deal, they told me it happens occasionally.

    Biotin

I take 5,000 mcg per day in one capsule, but there is more in my multi and more in my hair skin and nails vitamin. I hate to say it, but all of this does nothing. I think I just have expensive pee. My hair fell out when I had band surgery and has never recovered when I had revision surgery. I have new hair coming in, but it's still falling out!
  20. After RNY gastric bypass surgery, your stomach will no longer process fats and sugars. That can mean the fats and sugars in milk. I became lactose intolerant after surgery. Anytime I drank milk, it immediately led to an upset stomach and a trip to the bathroom. Some of the Protein shakes also contain lactose. This lactose intolerance condition went away after about two months.

Tried to Talk Me out of the Band

I truly believe a lot of patients also feel more 'superior' because their doctor sold it to them that way. My follow-up doc who does my fills has been uber helpful, but he is VERY pro-bypass or sleeve. He sees faster weight loss and has more experience with it. PLUS, his patients get closer to goal, according to him. BUT, they are not me... and it all depends on your personal goal. I mean, I was 235, and now I am in the 170's. I wear a size 12. I look and feel NORMAL. I don't have head hunger issues anymore. I am going to get every last pound of me that I can, BUT I know that it may not be likely that I get to 130 or 140, like I'd like. Am I disappointed? GOD NO? Do I have second thoughts? Not even for a split second. I can walk down the beach in a bathing suit and not be totally mortified. I can show my kids healthy eating habits, and more than anything, my obsession and fixation with food is GONE.

Tried to Talk Me out of the Band

Isn't that the goal of support forums like LBT? I don't remember anyone accusing bypassers of the things you mentioned. I know those symptoms have been discussed, but those are not necessarily a foregone conclusion for all bypassers. I think that we, as bandsters, convince ourselves that the other surgeries definately have these "severe and adverse" side effects so that we can be confidant in our decisions about lap band. And vice versa. I'm sure the bypass patients do the same about lap band. That doesn't mean I'm offended that they do it. It's just "the grass is green on MY side" this time. I'm happy with my decision. Yes, there are lifestyle changes. Yes there may be side effects such as gas or burping. These were side effects I was willing to live with. I would hope the bypassers would be able to say the same about their decision. I don't judge them for it. They made their decision for their own reasons just as I made my decision for my own reasons. Jack made some very valid points regarding the comparisons to different makes of cars, motorcycles, etc. When you think of it that way, it makes perfect sense. We all have the same fight, obesity. We just took a different path to get to the battle and win the war.

Tried to Talk Me out of the Band

Dawn, I concur. Noone ever accused bypassers of being retarded and unintelligent. Stinky, yes, but we are all stinky at one point or another. I apologize to the O.P. about how this got off track. I think it is a real shame that someone tried to discourage you. I know how it feels and I've been through it with the band and the bypass. I shouldn't have hijacked your post because one poster makes me nuts. (Not you, Dawn. I think you are a very sensible lady.) I need to learn what the ignore feature is for. Good luck in your journey and I hope the scale fairy visits you often!
  24. Getting banded has been really great so far. My surgery went without a hitch and I was out of bed and rarring to go almost immediately following. Its early days, but I remain hopefully optimistic that this will work out in ways that all the other diets that I have tried have not. I consider myself a professional inexpert dieter --if its out there I have tried it. Low carb, no carb, nutri whatever, ww, fasting, diet pepsi and cigarettes, opti, medi, HMR, slimfast, diet pills (Rx and OTC) added to the mix to keep my appetite in check. My best and longest successful dieting foray was from the winter of 2000 through the summer of 2003. With boatloads of Water, a low carb diet, and as much exercise as I could stand -- I managed to lose about 90 lbs (this left me still needing to lose about 50 or 60 lbs to achieve a healthy weight by American standards and certainly by my standard). However, the long plateau worked to undermine my dedication and the weight began creeping back at a pretty steady clip. I never again got to my high of 292, but at my first weigh in with the lap band surgeon I was about 268 or so. It was a tough decision for me to make. For a variety of reasons I wasn't interested in a bypass....and it killed me that essentially I am paying someone to restrict my food intake. But the yo-yo dieting had really defeated me. I have been forturnate in that I am a relatively healthy fat person -- but I knew that time was working against me and the older I got -- the less likely that that trend would continue. So it was with alot of baggage that I started shopping around for a bariatric doctor to explore the lap band. The whole insurance thing was/is a hassle. They cover, but I couldn't find an in network provider (in NYC or NJ), just out of network with a threatened 70% coverage amount. I haven't seen any bills yet. I will certainly provide updates as that situation unfolds. Post surgically I have "officially" lost 14 lbs.... this is a little sketchy in my opinion. They weighed me at the hospital the day of .. and I was a whopping 274. I think working the day before from home, planted in front of my computer all day with no food after 3pm and no liquid (because I can be overzealous in following pre-surgery instructions) had me retaining major water. If I go by my last weigh in at the doctor the week before my surgery my weight loss as of 12-19-2007 is closer to 4 lbs. Post surgically, I was bullied by my doctor to lose about 10 lbs. Surprisingly, I have found that I am not at all interested in monitoring my weight other than whatever I am forced to do when I go to the doctor. I mean why torture myself? That's why I decided to get the surgery, right? This should not be interpreted as not monitoring my intake.... I have. Although I didn't do so good with the whole crushing pills until 1 month after surgery. Yuck! I just couldn't. I have tried my best to limit my intake, eat three times a day with no snacking and don't eat and drink at the same sitting. The last has proven to be the toughest thing. Also, it has put me in jeopardy of not taking in enough water -- I am trying but if you can't drink during, or up to 30 minutes before or after, and can't gulp it down like medicine.... I am reduced to totting around a bottle and taking sips all damn day. It has proven to be my greatest challenge so far. :faint: But generally speaking -- its so far so good and I am hopeful that I will have lost another couple of pounds when next I see my doctor 1-15-2008. And if I haven't... that's alright. The average weight gain between Thanksgiving and New Year is like 5 lbs, right? If I managed to dodge that bullet -- its all good. Later,

help asap: I am so tired

Stay away from slimfast if at all possible. There is usually a very high content of sugars. Even Ensure is way to high in that respect. There are plenty of product our there that will fit your needs as a new bandster that is low in sugar and carbs. Bariatrix makes a good product. You can find quite a few different things at Bariatric Advantage. (Nutritional supplements for Gastric Bypass Bariatric Surgery Patients from Bariatric Advantage) Hope that helps.
