July 2020 Surgery anyone?
WishMeSmaller replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is so awesome! Congrats to you! 🎉🎉💕 Are you going to revise your goal or just maintain? Nosey people, like me, want to know😂 -
I met with my NUT once before my revision. She looked at my Myfitnesspal and handed it back to me and said..... Good, keep that up. Then she said, well you should know what to do, this is your second time. Made me feel like a failure... which i was not. Anyway, Friday was my one year and yesterday was my one year appt. All they keep saying is you are doing an amazing job.... but still no sight of the NUT. I'm sure she is there... somewhere. @Keatsy I think i'm with you.... may go back and become a NUT.

July 2020 Surgery anyone?
Pandemonium replied to IWantTheDream's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So bear with me on this one. Back in February when I had my first appointment with the Holyoke Medical Weight Management program, I met with one of the two physician assistants that handle the intake of new patients. In that meeting, I went in looking into the medical weight loss program since I was under the impression that I was not eligible for further bariatric surgery. One of the first questions asked of me was what my goal weight was. I was told not to overthink it and to simply give her a number that I wanted to get down to. I said "225 pounds", which seemed like an unachievable goal, but it was what I weighed 20 or so years ago and while still overweight, was a comfortable weight for me. As that would involve losing 116 pounds, she informed me that I would be unlikely to achieve that goal in the medical program, but that it would be much more achievable in the surgical program. She quickly cleared up my misconceptions about my eligibility for revision surgery and sent me home to think about how I wanted to proceed. A couple of weeks later, I was back in for my official intake into the surgical weight loss program to start the journey to removing my lapband and revising to a vertical sleeve gastrectomy. From that point, you've pretty much seen my progress and success. So I only weigh myself once a week and it is on Tuesday mornings (used to be on Fridays, but once I had my surgery, I moved it to Tuesdays to align with the day I had surgery). Here's this week's update: Starting Weight: 341.1 Surgery Day Weight: 262.8 Pre-surgery Weight Loss: 78.3 Current Weight: 225.2 Weight Lost in Past Week: 3.8 Post Surgery Weight Loss: 37.6 Total Weight Loss: 115.9 So, a couple of things: 1) I weighed myself 5 damn times this morning to see if I could get that .2 to go away. It didn't. My scale is too accurate to indulge in my shenanigans. 2) I am going to end up breaking my rule and will end up reweighing myself on Thursday or Friday, just so I can see that .2 disappear. 3) I have now lost more than a third of my body weight. 33.98%, to be precise. 4) Next goal is 190lbs. But first I have to get rid of that annoying .2lbs -

My bypass & gallbladder out were on Aug. 24th & I see my Dr for follow up today 8 days postop to start phase 2. My Dr. Is really conservative about what goes in the stomach in the first week so I havn't had anything other than water for first 2 days then at home Gatorade zero, no sodium beef broth, protienO2 waters & a lil sugar free jello. Today I will start adding 2-3 protien shakes each day for 1 week. Then after that some mushy watery soups & sugar free pudding etc. Dr. Gandsas goes pretty slowly with reintroduction of foods. I don't mind tho, its honestly helping me face down some of my food demons within my food addiction. I have been scanning the internet for yummy interesting gastric recipies to focus on and look forward to instead of just thinking about how many months it will take to train my body not to dump if I eat my favorite ice cream lol. I spoke with my counselor about it and she agrees this approach is better for me to go super slowly and see some rewards from this surgery before I begin eating solids again too. So in 8 days I've lost 13 lbs and THAT makes me very happy 😊 I hope you're also doing well postop! Heres to Geenie & my new Tummy who's name remains to be decided lol -

Had gastric bypass on 28th of August. 3 hrs surgery, dr found haital hernia and repaired it as well. Stayed over night, next day x ray showed no leaks and tolerated liquids well. Discharge home. Gas in abdomen was an ordeal, after releasing gas felt better each time. Abdomen felt discomfort with no pain. Named my new tummy Greenie, cause she loves the liquid green smoothies. Frozen berries and banana, kale, spinach, moringa, hemp seed with protein shake blended well to liquid form., Greenie loves it when I sip in small amount each time. Discomfort in abdomen feeling better each day. At age 66 I feel I made a excellent choice to healthier living journey. Look forward to no use of cpap and health issues that run in the family like CA, stroke, high bld pressure, diabetes, etc. I believe with this surgery I avoided family history of health issues. -
I'm new, and interested in this as well. I have small fibre neuropathy. I was originally prescribed more, but am taking 1200mg at bedtime, as I didn't feel like it did much for me during the day. It still doesn't do much for my chronic burning pain, but it's better than nothing. Do you have to cut larger medications in half in order to take it after the surgery? Also curious if those that are bypass patients are having to adjust dosage amounts of any medications due to the malabsorption.

I am 22 months post-op & I had a mini gastric bypass. Hang in there it gets better. I had my doubts along the way but stuck with it & gave myself permission to admit it and then jumped back into it Keep looking for a protein shake you like, there's one out there. Not sure where you live but i found the only one i can still drink is Shamrock Farms rocking protein, 190 calories & 30 grams of protein. The chocolate one tastes just like chocolate milk. When I'm looking for a crunch & something sweet i eat a FitCrunch bar by Chef Robert Irvine. They are 190 calories & 16 grams of protein and they taste like a candy bar!!! I know not a breakfast item but a great protein snsck for your calorie buck another great crunch item, also later in the day is quest protein chips. You've got this! You're doing great and you will hit your goal. Please be patient with yourself, you didn't gain weight overnight. you're a beautiful work in progress It has taken me 22 months to lose 133 pounds & it was so worth it. -
VSG to RNY due to Gerd

Thank you. I’m 80% going to move forward with the bypass. I just have to get my courage there. I had such an easy breezy sleeve recovery. I just don’t want any issues with the bypass. I have gained 50 pounds from my lowest sleeve weight. Another thought I have is what if I lose weight. Would that fix the GERD on its own without surgery? Or no matter what I will need RNY -
VSG to RNY due to Gerd
Foxbins replied to Slimsoon1988's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hey, Slimsoon1988--I had my sleeve in 2011, developed GERD a couple of years later. Took max dose PPIs for a few years, then started having acid even with the PPI. Took PPI plus Tums for a couple of years, but then the acid caused an esophageal stricture and I was regurgitating everything I swallowed. The last straw was one day I swallowed a bite of toast, and it came back up eight times (I counted) slimier and more disgusting each time, before it finally stayed down. All due to GERD. I saw a surgeon who said my only recourse was RNY, but I loved my sleeve, I was at goal, could eat most things, was almost 8 years older than the first surgery, didn't want malabsorption. So I got referred to the surgeon with the best reputation for challenging cases. He brainstormed a bunch of different surgeries, but after testing it turned out that RNY was really the only one that would address all my problems. So I had RNY on 6/29. OMG. I can sleep through the night again. I have not regurgitated any food at all. I have not had any acid reflux after any kind of food, spicy, coffee, fatty. It truly was a miracle. My surgeon made the bypass pretty short so I wouldn't lose much weight. I lost about ten pounds the week I was on liquids, but I'm okay with that, and my weight has leveled off since. If you decide not to do anything, please have regular EGDs so that if you develop Barrett's esophagus from the GERD you know sooner rather than later. Barrett's is no joke. Wishing you the best. -

Thank you all that have replied. Right now I’m debating between just living my life with GERD or doing the bypass. But what if the GERD gets worse. Right now I’ve had a sore throat for a week. This is my 3rd sore throat this year. I’m just really nervous. -
Choosing between surgeries
chunkarella replied to Chrissylynn80's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
For me, it was the more long-term effects of the bypass. It's been studied longer and there is more data. Obvi, sleeve will never catch up to it since it was developed after, but with the sleeve, a nurse at the bariatric center said she had a cookie (about 3 months out from her sleeve) and it didn't hurt and it triggered something mentally in her. I know myself too well to allow that to happen.. meaning, eating foods i shouldn't bc they dont cause any issues. so i went w/the bypass. It has the back up "dumping" syndrome which is an alarm of eating something you shouldn't. That alone, is enough to scare me from eating what I shouldnt. So far, it's kept me from eating a lot of things i truly do enjoy, but can't have. maybe one day I can have a bit or two of something.. but for now, i dont want to chance it. -

I am 1 week postop Gastric Bypass & Gallbladder removal. I was in the hospital 2 nights, The first 24 hrs were extremely painful for me. I had to basically beg for enough pain meds and drinking wasn't really a factor til day 2. I pushed myself to walk as often and as dmfar as possible to get the gas moving. Once the gas began moving the pain became much less. I'm drinking fine at home, My Dr. Says Clear fluids for the whole first week. Followup is Tomorrow when I can begin supplements and protien shakes. Ive had a cesarean with my son & a lot of other surgeries but never had pain like I did with this surgery. Because I had my gallbladder out too I had 9 incisions and one for the drain. Highest weight was 313, I was 293 lbs on Surgery day 8/24 & this morning day 6 postop I weigh 282 so an 11 lb weightloss for week 1 which does make me happy. I feel ok but feel I have to be very careful not to eat or drink more than 1.5 oz in a 15 min period. -

Yikes! I am having my Nissen Fundoplication with metal banding revised to an RnY on Wednesday. I had severe GERD and a large Hiatal Hernia. The Fundoplication worked for about 2.5 years but now the GERD is back and I have another hernia that developed above the fundoplication. This sounds like it's going to be...not fun.😰 -
Lapband to MGB surgery done and feeling good

I had my revision done on August 27. Absolutely no pain. The only problem I had was nausea afterward. I don’t handle narcotics well. I ended up dry heaving for the first day. But day 2 hit and it was all forgotten. I’m doing well, following the all the rules therefore swelling is going down and a few pounds down already. Starting to get energy. Looking forward to the next 3 weeks. -
good morning.... Pretty much the same status i started with .... it was 2009 and at 5'2" and 232lbs. I had NO self confidence and NO sense of self. My x brought me to nothing. He (6'4" not overweight) is the most self-centered, selfish, controlling, norcicistic man you will ever met. I took it for 26 years... technically 29, we dated for 3 years. It was a gradual thing... At first it was my friends, then my co-workers, then my family. We would only do things with his friends and family. I could never do anything with friends and co-workers only if he was there. Family, i could on holidays and he would never come. He controlled everything even though i work all the time (2-3 jobs sometimes). He took all of my main jobs money. I was able to keep the cash of the other (waitress). This is what i used to buy personal stuff and my kids things. I couldn't even buy underwear without his approval. I would sew up the holes just to avoid an argument. Cut my kids pants for shorts for school.... it was ruff. I thought all those years ago, if only i were skinny i could make him happy. Make him love me again, make him want to be with me sexually... and life would be fine. But NO, life after the band got worse. From day one he hated the thought of me losing weight. He was very degrading to me and one of the biggest was my weight. Of course, he told me all the "normal" things you tell a large person..... Your fat, no one will ever want you, you are disgusting, Lazy.... that i was ugly... But when i tried to lose weight he would always sabotage it. He knew and would still make me bring him home cake, pie, ice cream...., Then say, you don't have to eat it. Well when i decided to have WLS, he fitted out... he did everything in his power to get me to change my mind, and when i didn't and was doing my 2 week liquid diet..... he decided to go on a 4 day bike drive to the mountains. I stood strong and didn't cheat not once. As it would turn out, that trip saved me.... My company did a massive lay off and i was to be part of the over 100 to be let go. But because i wasn't there they couldn't lay me off. That Tuesday i had the band sx and went back to work the following Monday and lost my job and insurance.... It was a blessing in disguise. Over the next year, i lost 69lbs. the next year i lost 20lbs and that's pretty much where i stayed. In 2012 without him know till two day before i had a TT w/MR and lipo to the flanks..... HOLY HELL was he mad. I thought i didn't come all this way to be left with saggy skin... As my confidence grew my tolerance of him got less and less. Even with him still degrading me.... I was too skinny, looked like a bag of bones, still ugly, but now he pointed out the wrinkles. And through it all...... Why are you losing weight? You must be cheating... NO. In 2014ish.... i got to the point where i hated going home. My oldest was out the house and married and my youngest was on his way. There was nothing at home except my dog and a hateful miserable husband. I asked him so many times for counseling... he said, if you pay for it, i'll go, but i don't need that, there is nothing wrong with me.... It's all you. That was it, the last straw... i started preparing my self to be on my own. In July of 2015 i told him that if things didn't change, i was filing for divorce come January. He of course didn't believe me, well January came and i filed. He still didn't believe i would go through with it.... but when i started going out and leaving him home he finally got it. I was gone forever. I made him move out July 4th.... My independence day..... It was like the world was lifted off me. I could breathe. And i figured if i had too, i would work 3 jobs again... My weight went up and down over the years, but never more than 20lbs.... i was at my lowest when he left 130ish. But got back to my normal 143lbs. Dating was exhausting and fun all in one. Then in Oct i signed up for Match on a "free" week just to see what was out there in crazy land. And i met the man of my dreams.... we talk, texted for a few weeks and then met in person. I never knew men could be like this. Opened doors, pulled out chairs, walk nearest the road, carried my luggage, complimented me, listen to all my crap... Including that i was dating others and was NOT interested in a relationship. But i found myself comparing all the other men to him... and my friend said, men like him and one in a billion, take him before someone else does..... and i did. He is the most incredible man, supports me in everything including my revision to the sleeve a year ago..... and our 1 year wedding is on the 28th...

VSG to RNY due to Gerd
catwoman7 replied to Slimsoon1988's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I haven't had revision, but I've been hanging out on bariatric sites for the last 5-7 years. It does seem to work for most people, but of course you'll find outliers. Sorry to hear about the above responder's complications, although fortunately, as with virgin surgeries, those seem to be pretty rare. -

I had the sleeve done 10/19 and then had severe GERD about two months after and the doctor put me on omeprazole once a day then upped it to twice a day. Nothing helped. I also had a hilated hernia. So he decided to do the bypass on July 2020. About not even a day later I was having bleeding issues. So I had to go back in for surgery for them to fix it. So I had two surgeries in two days. I stayed in the hospital for a week. This was worse than the three c sections I had. Four weeks later and I’m still in pain. I’m not trying to scare you but just sharing my experience. My doctor said I was the 5% that this would happen to. So maybe I just had some bad luck that day I don’t know. I haven’t had to take any of my omeprazole. I haven’t had any GERD symptoms. So far it’s been worth it for that but otherwise I’m still figuring out if it’s been worth it altogether. Good luck in your decision! -
Hello all- I’m interested in hearing people’s stories as they went from sleeve to bypass due to Gerd. I’m extremely nervous restarting this process. I was sleeved 5 years ago and have been suffering with GERD ever since, which I feel has gotten worse. In 2018, I did the linx surgery, which is a metal band around the esophagus to stop GERD- it didn’t work so I got it removed later that year. Now here I am in 2020 thinking about the switch to bypass. Obviously my fear is this will now be my 4th surgery in 6 years. In addition, will this really work.

I had a good nutritionist but still relied on my own personal guidelines, basically kept to a more strict routine and took longer on the stages than she was necessarily happy with but she was understanding, at least as much as anyone could be I suppose. Each nutritionist seems to have their own concepts and suggestions. I told her things I was doing that worked for me and I think she added some of it to her nutrition class. Such as I mix PEScience protein powder with Oikos Triple zero yogurt. on that note my current obsession is Oikos Triple zero Lemon Tart yogurt mixed with PEScience select peanut butter cookie protein powder that I freeze for 30 minutes and mix again. I put A little sola low carb granola On top. A manzano banana. And land o lakes whipped cream. PEScience http://rwrd.io/c6uus2e sorry 😐 what was I saying. I have different circumstances so it was hard to get this across to my nutritionist. I am unable to exercise. And had gastric bypass surgery because of this due to lifelong chronic illness and disability. As well as metabolic disorders. Then you get asked are you exercising ... like ... I’m being as active as humanly possible when exertion that people take for granted exhausts me, makes me ill and exercise causes damage and ages my muscles ... (without actually saying all that because hey no one listens) I stuck to very strict low carb and low calorie until I reached goal and still do with exception of some nuts and a little fruit now. Though the nuts I eat are low carb. I’m obsessed with pepitas roasted salted I usually add a little to my yogurt for extra crunch. my nutritionist said no gummy vitamins until I showed her the ones I take which are garden of life Whole Foods based multivitamin and any sugars are within her guidelines of less than 4-5 grams and food based. if two shakes a day gets you the protein you need and they are low carb low sugar And not high in calories, than I don’t see the problem. Although personally I think sometimes nutritionists recommendations for protein is too high or too generic. 0.36 grams of protein per 1lb body weight is a good starting point to calculate daily intake. Of course higher if you exercise a lot. im not good with meals I still have issue with nausea and things I won’t get into and though I don’t drink shakes anymore and didn’t once I figured out mixing protein powder with yogurt tasted even better ... I have a protein bar for breakfast and the yogurt mixed with protein powder for dinner. My main meal is lunch. And usual consists of something simple like a veggie burger with an egg. Sometimes with avocado. Or even a manzano banana. sorry I rambled a lot and it’s likely not a practical response or not an answer you asked for either. Sorry 😐

I didn't have a choice, I had to have Gastric Bypass because I had a Nissen for my reflux. I was told when I had the Nissen surgery that I would only be able to have the Bypass so I wasn't surprised. It was a serious decision to have WLS but I was in serious trouble. -
