Feel like I never had surgery?

I think this is a grass is greener scenario. I am still having open wounds that need worked on and i have a considerable amount of pain but i am only a little over a week out. i also -sometimes- cant go more than a 1/2 ounce on puree without my nose running. I am having a real tough time getting the fluid in at 1 ounce limit. real. but everyday is a new day. im following my programs plan so i wont be eating the carbs til appropriate. however, i am not meeting even the protein minimum in the plan. 1 oz protein but cant drink if eat. its very rough to even meet one of the goals let alone both. i believe it is possible that some people have a looser connection point to their intestines which can make things easier than this which may be why yours seems so easy. however because i had a higher bmi i got the bypass to the max even the intestine length is 150cm. so thats probably why i am on the struggle bus but i wasnt going to go through it unless it was done all the way you know lol

    Weight gain post revision

I went in for my revision on 8/11 weighing 212 and at my week post op on 8/19 I weighed 215. I know it was from fluid because I got 6+ bags of IV fluids in the 4 days post op in the hospital.

CatWoman7 is definitely right. I did nto plan on having plastic surgery when I planned on my Gastric Bypass. I knew my body wouldn't fully recover, and I would have a "pouch" of fat, but I was okay with that. I started getting really bad infections under my belly, where my skin would overhang and also in my belly button, i was provided powder by my surgeon to help with the itching/pain, but it was constant. I ended up visiting my surgeon for three months in a row, they documented the issue, and my insurance covered my surgery almost completely, but it all depends on your insurance.

I am having revision from sleeve to bypass on September 18 (due to GERD). I start the liquid diet tomorrow. It doesn’t feel real just yet.

    Surgery done today

Doctor told me the bypass is like a drainage system with a very small opening. I have been taking very little sips of liquids. I see the liquid draining through the system smoothly. This way, I am able to take in the liquid. I avoid dehydration, constipation, etc. I do the same thing with unsweetened apple sauce on day 9. Got tomatoe soup at panera bread and sip the soup. tolerated it well. No pain, no discomfort. When I took bigger sips, I had a hard time with liquid intake. This works for me with little sips. Good luck with your journey.
  6. I have found several sleeve posts on here from 2014 and before of patients that had Dr. Boyce perform their sleeve surgery, but they don't seem to stick around on here long. I'm curious to know how Dr. Boyce's sleeves are doing at all stages of post-op. I know his bypassers do amazing so I would like to hear results on his sleeved patients.

Anyone else use dr boyce in Knox tn?

Dr. Boyce performed my mother's bypass in 2015 and my sleeve on 7.27.20. My sister just had her consult with him too so she can get sleeved! He is great! Wish others posted on here who had him as their surgeon. I want to meet some sleevers of his to see his specific results lol.
  8. Best wishes. I had my gastric bypass in 2010. I understand how you are feeling. Hang in there. I wish I had known about this site when I had my surgery. stay strong LenaBena
  9. Hey everyone! Thought I’d share my experience for those about to go through the pre-op liquid diet. I’m finishing up Day 13 of liquids only. No meals allowed on my diet. I was about 95% compliant and stuck to broth, Premier Protein Shakes, sugar free jello, and Bariatric Soups (low cal and fat, high protein). And water. Some Gatorade Zero. Overall I’ve lost 15 pounds since my highest weight (238, 5’6”) - this morning I weighed 223. It has been honestly kind of hell. I’m a grazer and love salty snacks and broth and soups have helped, but I’ve been white knuckling it and I have been a total tempermental MESS around my family (I’ve apologized many times - ha!). I’m irritated and angry I can’t have my cheese and wine and salty marcona almonds before dinner (it’s a wonder how i gained weight in the first place, right?) ;) I did cheat on the liquid diet; four or five of the 14 days I had plain chicken breast, about 1/4 to a 1/2 a cup, when I thought I would faint or die from hunger. I snuck an occasional pickle here and there and once had a couple of scoops of pico de Gallo. Otherwise, I’ve been suffering and had to ask my family to stop making aromatic food at dinner because it fills the whole house and makes me hungry from places I’ve never felt hunger. But, I’ve survived and the last 2 days have been easier. The good news? I never realized how much I grazed and ate emotionally and to combat stress. I’m really glad I took this seriously because I learned a lot about my old eating habits that I did out of routine. Also, Premier Protein shakes made me extremely constipated!!!! In case you were wondering why you may have rock hard poops. Ha. I’m ready to finish today out strong, enjoy my day off as much as possible tomorrow, and mentally prepare myself for surgery on Tuesday AM. Any questions comments hit me up! I’m so thrilled to be on this journey with you all.

    Day 6 post op help

I have good days n i have bad days. In the scientific data shoulder pain can be symptom of leak which is more common in vsg than bypass. I would mention all symptoms to clinic because leak has more than one symptom and if you check the boxes for it they might want to see you. I wish u some comfort on your bad days and suggest heating pad and icepacks whichever you like lol
  12. I used shakes on and off for years and I’m petite build 5’1” and I have a hard time loosing on them. I loose the first 10 easily but after that it’s a real struggle. I lost maybe 6 pounds on my 2 week liquid diet. I had bypass on 7/16 and I’m down 22lbs! 42 with my presurgery loss.
  13. @613cnn I could've written your post above. Except I'm 12.5 weeks out and 29 pounds down. Everything else is the same... walking 4-5 miles a day (tho I'm 7 days a week) . Carbs go down easy and I eat too many but try and keep them at least the same as my protein most days. Gotta commit to strength training. @Groovymommy... My hot flashes are miserable. My doc husband just recommended a vitamin with Black Cohash and I started it last week. Nothing so far. But I'll stick with it since you say It works for you. Also my hubs is a big believer in the shoulder steroid shots. (and knees). Go for it. By the way I've now had two ibuprofins. Took them during a migraine with a prilosec and lots of water. No stomach problems. Don't plan to make it a habit but after 3 months of no Nsaids it sure worked. Envious of your lack of hunger. No such luck here. I'm getting about 1000 calories a day. Hence the slower weight loss. On the plus side no hair loss yet and my labs are great. I forgot to mention, I'm having some success in the constipation-battle with taking a senna every other evening. I wouldn't say it makes going easy but keeps me from getting backed up and colace was starting to make me a little nauseous. You might give it a try Anyway, good to hear from you both. Here's hoping we hit our halfway goals soon! I've got 4 more pounds to halfway! Hope it happens by 4 months post as I've read 4 months is often where most hit their halfway. Onward Bypassers!

    Anyone from the NC area

Hi, I havent been able to meet anyone in the area going through the same thing as me. I am 42 years old and having a gastric bypass on 9/14. Whats everyone's else's story? Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. I had my revision on 6/29. Chicken, even with my sleeve, was always a difficult protein for me to get down. Have you tried a softer protein? Tuna with light mayo? Egg salad? Ground pork in spaghetti sauce? Maybe try something else besides chicken. I can eat most things now at nine weeks post-op.

    Crappy Dietician

That’s a lot of protein for your current weight. Was this the goal given to you by your surgical team or dietician? I’d never be able to consume that much protein in a day. I originally advised 1g of protein per kg of weight but then my dietician told me because I’m in my mid 50s I should be consuming 1.2g of protein per kg of weight. You’re about 57kg so, depending upon your age, 57 - 68g of protein should be fine based on the rate I was given. Of course you need more if you do a lot of exercise esp weights. Do you need more protein because you have a gastric bypass? So interesting, but also frustrating, all the conflicting information we get.
  17. I had the gastric sleeve in 2012 and I just had my revision to the bypass on July 27th. So far I am regretting it. I was told I could move on to solids. I have tried eating chicken but it gets stuck in my throat and I have to throw it up. I'm scared I'll never eat normal again. The sleeve was much easier than this. I never had this problem. Will things get better soon?

    Pressure and Bloat

When I did my pre-op for my VSG I had loose stools and was gassy. When I did my pre-op for my VSG to RNY revision I was constipated and bloated even with the same diet. Some people experience loose stools and lots of gas with a mostly or all liquid diet. Just depends on your body and how it wants to handle things. Hang in there, the loose stools and gassiness didn’t last forever for me, just a few days so hopefully the same for you!

    Iron deficiency

Thanks, that's good to know! The chelated iron is pretty cheap, too, and supposed to be easy on the stomach (and not cause constipation). Dr. Weiner said that chelated iron is best for gastric bypass patients because it can be absorbed anywhere in the intestine, while elemental iron is mostly absorbed in the first part of the intestine (which is now bypassed). But that video was from 6 years ago, so I don't know if there's any more recent research that says differently. Do you take 90 mg at a time or split it up into two doses?
  20. My endocrinologist ordered some bloodwork last week and (surprise, surprise) I have iron deficiency. I was slightly iron deficient before the surgery as well. I've been taking BariMelts iron + vitamin C with 54 mg of iron per day. The endocrinologist suggested I take the iron supplements twice a day, and that makes me nervous because I know too much iron can be toxic. Google tells me the maximum recommended iron dosage is 45 mg per day, and I'm already over that. I realize some of the normal rules go out the window for bariatric patients, but my bariatric program only recommends 45-65 mg per day. Dr. Matthew Weiner has a video on YouTube about supplements after bariatric surgery, and he said that the most important thing to learn from that video is that gastric bypass patients need to take chelated iron supplements. My bariatric program says nothing about that and specifies ferrous fumarate or ferrous fluconate (but they said the BariMelts, which are carbonyl iron, are fine). I purchased some chelated iron supplements (which are hard to find) and I plan to start taking those once I run out of BariMelts in a couple of weeks. I was told to take chewables for the first six weeks, and the chelated iron pills aren't chewable. My surgeon doesn't do bloodwork until 3 months out, which is about 5 weeks from now. I sent my bloodwork results to the surgeon's office, but I'm not sure if they'll even look at them since they're apparently not concerned about bloodwork until 3 months out. I'm conflicted between following my endocrinologist's orders (who does not specialize in bariatric patients), or waiting until my 3-month appointment to see what the surgeon says, and also see how the bloodwork comes out after I've been taking the chelated iron. Any advice?
  21. I am go to Tijuana Mexico I didn’t have to have a physical nothing just filled out applications they approved it sent deposit and made payments. They will cover procedure mine is gastric bypass with hernia repair. 4500.00 that includes motel they pick you up in San Diego and take you across you have your surgery stay in their recovery house they do a leak test and monitor you to make sure your ok for 3 to 4 days depending on the procedure you want. Then they take you back across to San Diego to the airport the plane tickets are on you if you take a companion it’s 40.00 extra plus you have to cover their food and extra night at the motel. The place I’m going is slimmer me they have lots of easy ways to make your payment when your out on the road from your phone. You should look them up and if you decide when you fill out the application just the them know I sent you.

    DON'T DO IT

When she talks about the prior reflux surgery that her wife had and they didn't know about it until they were in the process of the surgery...that was not a very well planned surgery. I have had that reflux surgery and am having my RNY on 9/16. It takes a special doctor and about 6 hours of surgery to do the takedown and then do the RNY surgery. I can see why see had so much trouble healing. The doctor didn't know what he was doing.... This is a VERY special kind of gastric bypass with the takedown of the Nissin before the RNY. Healing doesn take a lot longer and is a lot harder due to all the holes and stitches that have to heal. Please don't let this post determine your decision about WLS. The benefits normally outweigh the negatives.......
  23. I've been thinking for some time about having wls and finally took the plunge to see a Consultant. I've since had dietitian/psych consultations and have been "passed" for a gastric bypass though I don't have a date yet for the op. I have just over 4 stone to lose which has crept up on me over the last decade due to stressful situations/comfort eating. Having spoken to the dietitian and looking through the various topics and posts on bariatricpal I can see that in order to successfully maintain the weight loss which is achieved after the bypass, it's necessary to limit eating forever, say by calorie counting, and if this isn't done then it's likely that I would regain weight, despite the smaller stomach. I had (obviously stupidly) assumed that with a smaller stomach it would simply not be physically possible to eat as much and that this would keep the weight off. In the past I've been a bit of a yo-yo dieter and have lost weight successfully at Slimming World; the problem for me is that I find it hard not to go back to old eating habits and gradually the weight goes back on. So my question is: why is having the weight loss surgery more effective than losing the weight by dieting in terms of keeping the weight off long term? Am I just as likely to put the weight back on after wls as I would if I lost weight following a diet? I have to self-fund the wls and thinking about that, as well as the fact that it's major surgery plus the various potential issues such as hair loss etc is freaking me out a bit. Any thoughts? Thanks!
