    Ketogenic Diet

I have just restarted keto after a 1 month trial before Thanksgiving. My lap band history is that I had the surgery done about 12 years ago (Nov 2005). I lost about 60 lbs and have put about half of that back (keeping in the 200-215 lb range). I felt good at my lowest (~175). My bariatric dr. did an initial fill post surgery (winter) and I had another fill a couple of months later. I had a partial unfill 2-3 years after the 2nd fill from a nurse that was doing them in the Marysville WA area (I was about 190 lb at the time, but had a hard time keeping dense food down especially protein). She has since closed down her fill/unfill business. As I was self pay it has been difficult to find someone to do fills/unfills (I can't afford $300+ each time, probably much more now plus the price of a fluoroscope exam). I would actually like an unfill (partial or total), but am now on medicare so can't afford an unfill unless I can find someone like the nurse. My daughter who also has a band is glad she had it done (she was substantially more overweight and had many more health issues including type 2 diabetes). However, I wish that I had not had it (I only had high cholesterol, slightly high blood pressure and sleep apnea). The band has made it very difficult in social situations (eating food) and I get stressed and then it is harder to keep food down and I usually have to excuse myself and go to the restroom to BP (vomit). As far as keto, it is not really a high fat diet unless you make it one. You should be eating good fats (olive oil, avocado, some nuts, I make keto mayo with olive oil). Since I can't eat a ton of protein, I don't feel I'm getting an overabundance of saturated fat and I try to eat leaner/cleaner cuts of meat and grass fed hamburger. I don't eat much bacon, maybe once a week I'll have a slice or two. The most important parts of keto is keeping your carbs low (20 g or less my preference or typically 20-30 when trying to lose weight) and moderate levels of protein (0.8 gram per kg of ideal body weight or you can scale down as you go if using your current weight; or see https://www.livestrong.com/article/535738-how-to-determine-protein-requirements/ to determine requirements). Too much protein converts into glucose. Look up Jason Fung (one of the "diet doctors" on youtube). Dr. Jason Fung completed medical school at the University of Toronto and a fellowship in nephrology at the University of California. He founded the Intensive Dietary Management Program in Toronto that provides a unique treatment focus for type 2 diabetes and obesity. He has an enlightening book called "The Obesity Code:...". He is an advocate of the keto diet and intermittent fasting. Another good source for inspiration is youtube's "Keto Christina". She has lost over 100 lbs and is very knowledgeable. She eats a lot of Irish bacon (very lean, not much fat compared to US bacon). P.S. I had my gallbladder removed at time of lap band due to stones and my daughter needed her gallbladder removed about 6 months post lap band surgery.

    I feel like I'm cheating

I was doing keto(high fat, high protein, low carb) until my dietician said it was too low carb...now I do 30-35% complex carb, 25-30% fat and 40% protein. Rate of loss did not change.
  3. It looks like there have been a lot of ppl who don't read. I eat 1000 calories or less and weigh 280. I was bulimic for years. I got the band and list then regained even though I was under 1000 caliries a day. I'm considering the surgery because the doctor says it changes your body's set point. My fear isn't that I won't lose, but that once again I'll regain because my body really wants to stick at this weight. I eat a whole foods diet, not a SAD. I do keto. I just don't lose. Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App With a condition as unusual/clearly medical/atypical as yours, a public WLS forum where most of us got fat from overeating junk is probably not going to get you the responses you need and desire. Definitely come here for support and love as you go through the process, but as far as factual scientific advice? Your situation is so far out there in the atypical range, I'm sure there are very few here that are qualified to answer. Best to you!! I'm sure with your desire to succeed, you can make it happen. I wasn't the OP. I was just letting her know she's not alone and that there are said to be benefits for those who are not eating 2 meals at McDonalds for dinner and still unable to lose weight. However, I'm not really sure where else one would look if they were in my situation and looking for answers. I can't possibly be the only one in my situation. And doctors assume I'm showing them my food diary that shows whole foods and then running thru to get a milkshake. No one believes me. I don't care and im not offended. But when I do start a thread with questions it's because of can't possibly be the only one in my situation and I need help too. As far as the doctors are concerned there is no reason and I just need to exercise harder. I did that. 2 hours a day. Where else can I turn? Like I said I wasn't asking questions originally, but where else would I go? Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal AppY You and the OP are absolutely warranted by coming here and asking your questions as well as sharing your experiences. Sometimes, just saying how you feel and having someone who will listen with concern is all that is needed to help get over a "bump in the road". We are not experts here, but we should always be willing to listen to a member who is "struggling"--physically and/or mentally. Most members on this site are great listeners. We can give no medical advice. We can "round table" ideas and can "suggest" based on our own personal WLS journeys. I hope that is enough. You would be surprised how much more I've learned from social media Than my doctors. I've taken many requests to my doctor for tests and have found answers (not weight problems but other problems), so yes that is enough! I just find it frustrating that people think that just because they can't control what they eat that no one can. That's not my problem. But WLS helps with more than control issues for many. I hope that's the same with me. Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App

Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App One thing I learned through this process is that my obesity is at least partly due to under eating as much as to overeating. Overeating is my bodies response to under eating (skipping meals, restricting, etc.). One of the biggest gifts of this program for me so far is a deeper understanding of nutrition and what my body really needs. Eating under 1000 calories in a day is no longer an option for me.

  6. Thanks! I have to lose 2 more kgs to go below 100. I'm so excited to see the magical 99 KG on the scale. Good luck to you also. Keto worked for me the first round and I lost a considerable weight. Not the second time though.
  7. Congratulations! It's a pretty amazing achievement to have lost 46 kilos. I too, am waiting impatiently to get to a double digit number on the scale. I haven't lost as much as you - yet, but I haven't been under 100 kilos since 2007, so for 15 years. I also tried keto but didn't do as well as you did. You can do this. 😁

    Louisiana checking in

Hi fellow Louisiana. No date for my surgery just starting this journey, my plan have you go through phases and I'm in the phase 1 Keto type diet right now. Good luck to you! I find it interesting you used to play football, I think that will help you with your success because you've been trained to work hard towards a goal. I will look forward to your updates!

    Keto post op diet

Ditto what AZHiker said. I'm back on keto with exception of fat %. I use vinaigrettes for salads and some salad dressings that straddle line between low carb and low fat. I use spray butter instead of butter, avocado mayo mixed with low fat mayo or greek yogurt and I use sparingly. Instead of full fat heavy cream, I opt for a splash fat free 1/2 and 1/2 )or vanilla protein drink). On rare occasions if overall carbs are low, I will use 1 TBSP of heavy cream in something but that is rare. I use fat free cream cheese, etc. - I think you get the picture. On top of this, since my calories are between 700-800 a day I still can be in ketosis sometimes partly from lower calories & part from low carbs. I notice when I stick to this, I lose weight faster. If I do some of the 'low glycemic carbs' like oatmeal, sweet baked potato, beans, I notice slow down in loss but I've had these items sparingly.. My surgeon is a keto fan after full healing when he lets his us start eating "regular food" . On the ongoing nutrition plan I just received, they had the macros as follows: 800 calories with 40% of total calories from protein, 30% from fat, and 30% from carbohydrates this should help increase your rate of weight loss. I can understand 800 cals & biggest % being protein but I was a bit surprised by 30% from fat part although I know they mean healthy kinds of fat like avocado, etc. Here is what plan says about fat: Limit fats to 2-3 servings a day; avoid unhealthy fats such as cream, lard, butter. 1 serving of fat should = 5g fat. Some examples include: 1 tsp. oil, 1 Tbsp. regular salad dressing, 2 Tbsp. reduced-fat salad dressings, 1/8 avocado, 6 almonds, 1 Tbsp. peanut butter. In looking at sample meal plans, I will revise it for me by removing some of the bigger carbs that the list has like once a day having oatmeal or 1 pc whole wheat toast as I need to keep overall carbs down to lose more quickly.
  10. Has anyone tried to maintain a keto diet after surgery? If so, what kind of macros have you been trying to maintain. I figure after all this liquid stuff is over, itll be best just to go keto, since, really, I already am carb wise
  11. I’m looking for other women like me that will share their weight loss experience! I’m nervous I won’t lose as much as I want to. I’m a lifelong vegetarian and already work out three times a week. I’ve been athletic my whole life but have an extremely hard time losing weight. I did strict keto for a year between my pregnancies and lost 48 lbs but plateaued and was never able to get below 248 no matter what I did. Im 5’10” and I’ve never been thin or even average. At 12 years old I was 5’9” and 205 lbs. I wore a size 16 pants. I hadn’t even gone through puberty yet. I can’t identify with women who were thin when they were young and then gained a lot of weight. I did gain weight gradually but at 205 I was a size 16 and at 296 I’m a size 20. I honestly feel like I’m exactly the same size as I was back then; my body just feels older, but I still / always felt like a big person. Being tall contributes to that. I’m approved for surgery but need to hear that there are other women out there like me, who have been big their whole life but are also strong and athletic. My goal weight is 200 lbs. I’d love to be a solid size 14 and feel like clothes today are better for pear-shaped women like me.

    5 years post op

Thanks! I do eat a range of things but honestly I make a lot of substitutions when possible like: regular bread when eating out but always keto bread at home (never was going to give bread up), regular fries when out vs airfryer fries at home, and yesterday I ate grilled chicken tenders vs fried tenders because the calories made more sense (even though I wanted the fried ones). Oh and I am dead serious about picking desserts over salads when the calories are on par 🤣 so I do watch calories (and sugar) more than what appears to be the “healthier” choice.

    Keto diet?

The true keto diet is very high fat. I want to try it to blow off the last 20 lbs but was wondering if the high fat would be a problem with the sleeve. Tried a few days and was GREAT!
  14. I wouldn't have the required amount of fat. But keto foods being mainly protein and veggies would work. Sent from my Vivo 5R using BariatricPal mobile app

    Pre surgery pre weight loss

I agree. I had a long wait (7.5 months) for surgery, but as soon as I made the decision to have surgery, I changed my eating habits and I lost 50 lbs before surgery - which is 50 I don't have to lose now. I started counting calories (around 1700 a day) and cut the carbs. I ate higher protein. I didn't do keto, but I focused on eating minimal sweets and pasta, bread, french fries, etc. I was actually less hungry and my GERD went away!

Any 2016 Type 1s out there?

I'm T1 on an insulin pump and got sleeved about 2 years ago. Was good for about a year, lost quite a bit and had energy and then my fibro got really bad and stopped working out, started eating crap again so gained a bit back. Started a keto diet a couple of weeks ago and that's helping, but I've cut down on my insulin quite a bit but still taking glucophage. I guess the sleeve is still good bc it limits how much i can eat otherwise would have gained more back. When i went for surgery though had to get off the pump and they didn't know how to control my bs so i was a mess (went to TJ for my surgery).
  17. Thank you. I can't help but be depressed. There are other things going on in my life (work & family) that are contributing factors, so this mess with my stall & my hair doesn't help. I feel like if I had a full head of hair (which was thin & fine, to begin with!) and was continuing to lose weight, it might help and feel like progress. I'm trying to stick to things as best as I can, but when the surgical staff says "stop snacking, only eat meals", it's hard! I just can't do it. I get stomachaches easily and do better with frequent snacks. I'm pretty much on a keto diet as it is. I just hope this stall breaks quickly... I have 50lb to go to get to my goal. Even if I don't fully reach it, I want to get close.

2 Years Post OP and struggling

Start today! Procrastination, giving up and excuses will not burn calories or help you lose weight. Give yourself some tough. Love you don't want a small gain to turn into a large gain. Join a weight loss challenge to keep you on track. Some on this site or google them. If your not logging your food. Get back in the habit again. You have lost the weight before you can do it again. Years out, we can get a bit complacent or slip back into old behaviors. I'm four years out I've also had to lose a regain. It's work. It's the same work we put in our first year. It may mean overcoming some mental battles to get back into your weight loss mojo. Pouch reset or real food? Some people can go back to liquids and progress in food stages. Shakes never make me feel satisfied. If liquids are too restrictive for you, Choose a whole/real food diet that you can be consistent with. If you can't consume your weight loss calorie/macro goals, spread them out to five to six small meals. Log your food. Accept the you will feel crappy for a bit as you detox. Get temptations out of your house. Keep health sweet and salty options on hand. (IDK much about keto. I'm sure others can give you better options) Examples that I use Sweet: fruit, can dip it in sugar free chocolate or caramel syrup. Salty: I make chicken fajitas without a tortilla or eat jerky. The best workout is the one you will be consistent with. A trainer or on your own with a gym membership. Whatever works for you.
  19. I agree with this totally. Many of us have experienced regain and lost the regain by getting our heads right again. It's easy to fall off track after some time and almost forget that you are a WLS patient, but that should always be part of who you are! The only true way to know if there's stretch is to have an EGD or a barium swallow. Most bariatric surgeons will tell you that a sleeve can't truly stretch because of the basic muscle type involved. I went back to my NUT, went back to the psychiatrist, went full on Keto and lost my regain. For ME, It was really about getting out of my own head, finding what I know works, and getting back to work.
  20. I am currently scheduled for surgery June18th! yay! I am thinking once I get on regular food to go on a KETO diet. Anyone have experience, Advice if this diet would be a good option? Having some anxiety about after surgery diet

    Liver Shrink diet

I'm 3 weeks post op now, in the puréed stage of my diet. I will kind of be honest with regards to boredom of foods. You need to prepare yourself to be bored with food after the first few weeks of surgery. You will only be able to eat a few things, and you are lucky if those are things you enjoy eating. During this time, try finding liquids you enjoy and plan on eating those for days at a time. During the first 2 weeks there aren't many options. I found eating the broth from a Vietnamese restaurant was way better than broth from a box or can. I had planned on Jello after surgery because I enjoy it, but even the sugar free caused me to have dumping. The Protein shakes were too thick and didn't settle well on my stomach so I chose GENEPRO as a protein replacement because it's unflavored and can be mixed in anything. Try to prepare for boredom because I wasn't and it hit me hard. I'm doing as little carbs as possible (keto diet) so I cut all carbs from my diet during my liver shrink diet. I had tons of grilled chicken and veggies, spinach and chicken salads (chick filet has amazing salads), lean beef kabobs, and tuna salad. I also tried many egg dishes because that's my go to protein with avocado for breakfasts. If I craved carbs I would eat protein. I don't know why but it helped. Also jello with whip cream was amazing before surgery when I could still eat it. I've not craved carbs or Coke one time since surgery and I think it's because I already went through those struggles during pre-op. Good luck and I hope that helps some. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  22. Thanks guys! I hope you are all right! haha! @Berry78 Gosh I your reasoning and math skills too! IKR on the fat and so little makes so many cals! I often used to look at people who were doing keto and some of the young ones were adding fat EVERYWHERE! And I'm like, you know, you really don't have to do that...cuz you're gonna hit keto numbers just by the fat in the meat, nuts, and dairy.
  23. Well, keep in mind that many of them are aiming for 1800 or 2000 calories.. which means adding another 8 TABLESPOONS of added fat! Lol! Yum.. keto sounds delicious! Fat is my favorite.. .... .... at least always used to be... Hmm.. on second thought, I don't think it's as good anymore... I don't DISlike it.. I just don't crave it. (Guess I'm still transitioning my brain to the then/now.) Btw..For the sake of accuracy.. I attributed all the calories in nuts to fat. Nuts also have some protein and carbs, so just wanted to point out that my numbers are just rough estimates.
  24. I've been doing Keto WOL for past 15 months in preparation for losing weight prior to pursuing bariatric surgery and also seeking relief from inflammation - which doing Keto has helped me with greatly. I probably won't have my weight loss surgery until the end of June or the beginning of July and am trying to get started on taking vitamins/supplements to meet my body's needs that I feel are being missed right now. I also want to head off/reduce the chances of massive amounts of hair loss. I noticed my hair is thinning - I'm on a blood thinner which causes hair loss and I've hit menopause which also causes hair loss so I've been VERY stressed over this. Then I think about how much hair loss I've seen in ppl who have had WLS although my nutritionist said most hair loss was from not getting adequate amounts of protein each day (min of 80 grams she said). My surgeon gave me a pamphlet for Bariatric Advantage vitamins but it is a bit confusing as I haven't had weight loss surgery yet, but I need to bolster my intake of QUALITY vitamins/supplements. If anyone has any recommendations for what would be a good vitamin regimen PRE-SURGERY, I'd greatly appreciate it! I know I need extra calcium and vitamin D in a bad way as well. I appreciate any help you can provide!!
  25. Hello! My name is Taylor and I am 25 years old. I am 5' 4" and my weight fluctuates around 235-250. I've struggled with my weight since I was a pre-teen despite being active. My mother got gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) about 10 years ago and has been very successful. I've tried many diets (WW, Profile by Sanford, Whole30, Keto, calorie counting) and nothing ever sticks and I always go back to my range weight of 235-245. I can never lose more than 20 pounds and always end up going back to the weight I've mentioned above. I would love to get this surgery sometime soon, and I am in the process of setting up a consult with a bariatric surgeon. I have a trip to Italy and Ireland for two weeks in September. And then my family and I are spending Christmas in Hawaii (Ive never been). Half of me wants to get the surgery sometime soon, before going to Europe to look and feel better so I can look back on this trip positively. On the other hand, my mom mentioned that I should wait until after Europe so I can enjoy the food (which Italy is known for). I could try to lose some weight before then, but then I dont think I would be eligible for surgery because my BMI would be lower. And I know I will just go back to my weight range eventually and go through the never ending cycle with my weight. Can anyone offer some advice? Any would be much appreciated! Thank you
