  1. Hello, I got my surgery back in Dec 2017. Starting from 96Kg, going down to 76 going back to 90 I am 3 years out and despite I gain back most of the weight I still thinking that without the surgery my situation could be much worst. Till 3 months ago I did get any type of downside from my surgery, but starting from March I started to get a lot of problems with my stomach. I need your help to figure what's going on. 1) Despite I am obliged to eat a very small portion and small bites, after every meal (does not matter the type of food, dry or wet) I feel like I have a huge block over my stomach. Take up to 2 hours before I start to get better. Never had before this type of problem, was able to eat an entire Big mac without any problem 2) Often after the meal a start to have premature atrial contractions that persist for the entire day plus a strong tachycardia. 3) I woke up in the middle of the night with strong pain in my chest back and front due to reflux that is getting so worst that I need 40mg of Omeprazole plus 2-4 pills of Gaviscon every day. 4) I have constant pain in the liver area associated with nausea and diarrhea. So, all these symptoms are getting worst day after day making me impossible to eat anything without feeling miserable. In the past week, I can eat only liquid food So, I have been in the ER a couple of days ago due the strings tachycardia, that performs some exams and heart is totally fine. Hypothesis: Stress, Ernia, or something related to digestion. Do you have some suggestions? My problems start usually after the meal (but3 months ago never happen) The night reflux happens if I eat after 7pm and go to bed around midnight (never happen before either) The liver pain came up after 3 months on Keto, so I have stopped that since I am inclined to have metabolic syndrome. Till 3 months ago I was eating very spicy food with no problems, but I stopped doing that because if I am eating spicy food now, I could die. So, what's going on? Please help me!
  2. So I finally made the decision...I had been contemplating surgery for years. I am 34 years old and have struggled with weight since I was about 10 years old. Up and down...up and down...then regain of more than I lost each time. Every diet you can think of. You all know the list! In 2011 I started going through the insurance process for weight loss surgery. I had lost 95 lbs on my own (with phentermine help) and started going to support groups and such. I had gotten down to about 290 from 380-385. However, while I was in the process (before being approved) - my insurance stopped covering weight loss surgeries. They have not covered it since. Well, you guys know the routine...after that, I started gaining a little weight back here and there...by 2014 I had gained back probably 50 lbs. Then fast forward to 2019 I got way past the initial 95 lbs. lost and started gaining rapid weight. I went to the doctor and was shocked to find I had gotten to 502 lbs! I was horrified at that number and literally thought I was about 430, as I had basically stopped weighing...I just KNEW it had to be an error and even asked to be re-weighed. In August 2019, I started doing keto and by January 2020 - I had lost 86 lbs...back down to about 417. Much better than 502, but so far to go. Well, during quarantine I have re-gained about 30 lbs back and again was so mad at myself. I had a morbidly obese friend pass away suddenly at 35 years old, a few weeks ago. She was probably about 700lbs+ and I had always worried about her health. This was a wake up call for me...I have had many before, but this one really hit home. So, I decided...I will no longer let insurance decide my fate. I will FIND A WAY to finance this myself. I contacted a recommended surgery group in Atlanta that some friends had good experiences with. Last week, I met with Dr. Lytle from Northside Hospital/Bariatric Innovative Solutions of Atlanta. We had a great meeting about surgery. He feels I am a great candidate for gastric sleeve. I also met with a nutritionist and she has recommended a pre-surgery diet. My next steps are EGD and psych evaluation. I also have to meet with the nutritionist again in July and another meeting with the surgeon in August. If all goes well by August, I will be approved for surgery! I have also secured a loan and the money was deposited today. No-one or nothing is getting in my way of this! I know this is what I need to help me! It seems unreal. I am already thinking about all of the things I will be able to do once I lose weight - that I have been physically limited from doing over the years. I want my life back. I am not nervous about the surgery. I am more nervous about not getting approved / something getting in the way. Is that normal to stress about that part? Thanks for letting me share my journey (so far) with you all.

    Some things to try. Years out, Some go back to bariatric real food plan. Others find a new diet plan (keto, paleo, vegan,whole30 intermittent fasting) Choose a plan that works for you. Log your food in an app. You can dial your calories up or down to find where your weight loss zone is. Weight loss calories are different for each of us. It's not a one size fits all instruction. Do you have a protein and carb ratio to stay in?

Hi everyone, I'm not usually very good at linking in on forums and other online communities, but I've logged in today for the first time since my roux en y bypass 3 years ago to see if there's anyone that has or is experiencing the same as me. For the first time, I have put on weight and I am so disappointed in myself for letting myself go. I had phenomenal success following my op - I lost around half my body weight: Reducing from 23st 5lbs (327lbs) to 11st 5lbs (159lbs) over 18 months and actually had to eat quite a lot, albeit little and often, in order to keep my weight stable. Since the coronavirus lockdown however I have been non-stop eating and as a result have gained a stone (14lbs). I'm 12at 5lbs (173lbs) now and my clothes are too tight. I can eat normal sized meals and constantly snack. Basically, once whatever I've eaten has digested I'm eating something else. I'm really worried I've stretched my pouch. Can going on a diet cause it to shrink back at all, even just a little? I'm considering a keto diet because I do like high protein and high fat (I'm crazy for butter!). All responses are welcome.     5 years out

    I'm two and a half years out - went down to about 114 but was really too thin. Then went up to 140 and definitely wasn't happy. My problem is very definitely sugar and carbohydrates. I'm a sober alcoholic (8 years this time out, and before the four year break (divorce + stupidity = relapse) was 22 years. Bu the point is that for me sugar is a drug and the insulin response I get from any processed carb works in pretty much the same way. So I've been working on killing sugar and processed carbs, plus grains and simple starches like potatoes, along with most fruit apart from small amounts of low GI berries over the last six months or so, trying various things. What have I learned: I can't do anything in moderation that isn't real food (by which I mean protein and fat and small amounts of carb appearing in leafy veg etc. This, alongside intermittent fasting (Dr Jason Fung is great on this) has begun to make a real change. Because it's not really about the losing weight for me now, although I want to lose about 15lbs still and it's beginning, It's about the need to be healthy, not to be constantly sickened by food, not to be constantly obsessed with food and to find a long term sustainable solution that allows me to get on with my life. Still hoping to cross addict onto exercise but that hasn't happened yet! Funnily, the post op diet which led with protein and allowed the veg and carbs in if there was room is closest to where I am now. I fast 16/8 - it varies but the average seems to be about 17/7. This is comfortable and I have loads of energy. Only been doing it a week properly and the keto for about a month but I was struggling with the macros and counting. Keeping it simple now. Be interested to hear if anyone is doing similar. What I would say is that my level of trust for something that doesn't involve someone trying to sell me special foods, vits, supplements, meal plans, exercise regimes is naturally quite high! Everything I need to do IF successfully if available for free. I like free! Actually - and again I'd be interested in people's thoughts here, I wish I'd discovered this and worked it pre-op. But hey, can't turn back time! Thanks all - this was a bit lonnnggg - sorry!

  7. Like many others, I am extremely private. When I got my lap band years ago, I told no one, except my assistant. She was the one who went to the surgery center with me. Pass forward, I had an emergency which the band had to removed, I had to tell my sister. This time when I was deciding on VSG, I included her in the narrative. However, due to COVID, I had to go to the hospital alone, since I use to work there, I was comfortable. As I work in healthcare, we continue to work from home. Whenever we return to the office, many knew I was doing Keto and also having a GI surgery which was postponed due to COVID. I have already decided when folks ask, which they will, I am still doing Keto..lol

    June 2020 surgeries

    Oh, and I'm scheduled for 6/17. (RNY - was gonna do sleeve but I decided on the RNY after talking a lot with my nutritionist and doing research) Was supposed to be May 4th, but was postponed due to COVID-19. I was feeling pretty hopeless that entire month and a half when it was cancelled (cancelled late march..), so I gained some weight. Luckily, my surgeon said no more weight gain and we can still do the surgery. My insurance doesn't have any requirements but the 6 month weigh ins. I'm 16 days away and I"m pushing myself with eating more veggies, more protein and drinking more water. It's stuff I've done before, because I lost ~80lbs on Keto a year and some change ago, but gained it all back. I figured this time, I can do all those changes I made w/keto, and the new tool of the surgery and I should be set. 🤞

    June 2020 surgeries

    I have to keep at or below 129kg (284lbs), but otherwise, there has been no specific diet that they've told me to be on. I got down to 124kg, but I am, as of this morning, back up to 133kg, so I am kind of in a panic. I know it's mostly water weight, but I'm terrified that they will send me home on the day of if I am not where I am supposed to be. Since my original date was postponed due to the pandemic, I have been messing up my personal diet pretty badly. I am "good" for a few days and then I get overwhelming stress and turn right back to food. I plan on going to a therapist after surgery to help find better ways to cope. I will probably switch to a keto diet if I don't see a dramatic amount of weight loss over the next few days here..

    Watched YouTube where two people tested all sweetners taking 2 tbls sweetness equivalent first thing in the morning, one sweetner a day. They measured blood sugar and ketones before eating sweetner and then retested 30 minutes later to see if blood sugar was elevated (elevation of blood sugar will cause insulin secretion). These are keto people but results were identical between the two. SWEETNERS NOT EFFECTING Blood Sugar Monk Fruit Erythritol (caused bad GI symptoms) Stevia Allulose (bad GI symptoms) Sucralose (not Splenda which has additions) Aspertame BAD SWEETNERS (raised Xylitol (GI discomfort), used in gum Cane sugar Maltitol (used in Atkins bars, ONE bars) Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Advice Needed

    I did two weeks on keto. Had one friend on shakes & another on a combination for three weeks. Seems it depends on your surgeon & your starting weight. Post surgery I was fluids for two weeks, purées for two weeks followed by soft foods for another two before beginning solid foods. Take it slowly. Your tummy will tell you what you can or can’t tolerate but I wouldn’t push it through the stages quickly. Took me a good three weeks to feel up to working but I always take a long time to get over things (healing, viruses, etc. - I have Gilbert’s & my BP was low). No lifting for two weeks & then less than 5kg for another two. Then no more than 10kg for the next two. Remember you’re healing from major stomach surgery. Always had a large glass of wine every night & enjoyed a good scotch or G&T. Now hardly ever drink. Lost the taste for it & don’t miss it. Certainly don’t need it to socialise with friends. Plus it was taking an hour to drink a glass. Would avoid mixing with juices - high calories & sugar. Also beware of addiction swapping. It’s a concern for post weight loss surgery patients to turn their addiction for food to something else. Carbonated drinks are very filling. Better to be getting in your protein & good nutrients than filling your small tummy with soft drinks. (Plus I personally have an issue with artificial sweeteners - they still feed your sugar craving.) If the tool is to help you & you intend to be successful long term you will have to change your relationship with food: how you eat, what you eat, when you eat. It takes work and your life will change but for the better.

    June 2020 surgeries

    I’m in Tiajuana right now. Have my VSG tomorrow. Very excited, not really nervous. Time to start this new life. I quit caffeine a couple months ago and dreaded giving up my decaf coffee with cream, didn’t think I could do it. Started clear liquids yesterday, no problem. No problem today either. It’s all in the head. I had to do the 1 week pre op diet but I actually started it about 2 weeks ago and then got perfectly strict 9 days ago. Keto stripped my urine this morning and it was large meaning I’m in Ketosis which is very good because it means my liver has used up all the glycogen stores. I’ve been hungry these past two days due to the liquid diet and when my stomach starts grumbling I just down some jello and hot tea or my lemon water. Just an FYI for everyone when you do the liquid pre-op, absolutely make sure you get bone broth which has 10 grams of protein. Protein is Very important for preventing muscle wasting, promoting healing and keeping you a little bit fuller.

    So I’m 3 days into keto. I’ve lost 3lbs already. I’m dealing with a bit of keto flu (dizzy and insomnia) but I feel good otherwise. I have about 30g of carbs a day. 100g of protein. And 180g of fat daily.

    No i totally understand Keto! The Miami diet, Dr akins, Slim fast, Oprah, and all the other diet plans ...........I can read! What I am saying is that is a diet, You need a lifetime balanced healthy eating schedule Not a diet. You are not on a diet, The Vets here will also tell you this. Took me a few months to read this site to figure that out, Bottom line You are on a lifestyle eating habits change for the better for life! Nobody said eat carbs or junk food. Took me a while to realize post WLS i was not on a diet, I was changing insane eating behavior and eating healthy and properly for life. During my journey except for some fasting was i never on a Diet. I understand it is not easy to get on this type of eating routine, But it is not a Diet it is your journey and your meal planning being healthy and under control that will give you what you are looking for.

    I actually have less issues when I am on low carbs. I am really gassy since the surgery. The days that I eat less carbs I don’t have that issue. As far as high calories, I’m not absorbing a lot of that fat. I’ve started keto... for those who are interested I’ll keep you updated. Again, this is not a lifestyle thing. I got an ok from a PA I know, so here I go...

    Isn’t the fat in keto meant to make you feel full for longer? Is it that our bodies can’t digest fat now, or that the fat is extra calories and possible weight gain?

    you obviously have no understanding of keto, most wls patients are meant to do low carb/keto as it is carbs that help you put on weight via gluconeogenesis in the liver when you have insulin resistance from a diet too high in carbs. it is not a fad.

    Ok so I’m not new to this. I am 10 months post op and have for some reason stopped losing weight no matter what I do (this is for over a month already) I realized that the way I’m eating is helping me maintain but I still need to lose about 30-40 lbs so I want to try keto- not for my whole life- just to do a 60 day thing or something just to get my body moving again. This is not a lifestyle change or anything like that....

    There are a lot of reasons to avoid the keto fad. You are already going to be in a keto like state after surgery. As you break down the fat so quickly, you will produce lots of ketones. Fat malabsorption is not unusual after WLS. Eating even more fat is not going to be helpful and a lot of it will just pass through. Fat is not going to give you the nutrition you need in the way of vitamins, minerals, and phytonurtients. It's basically just a lot of calories that you don't need and most likely can't even utilize. Consuming a lot of meat is not even healthy and contributes to a host of other health problems down the road. After WLS, you have 3 immediate goals: Water, protein, and vitamins. As the diet advances, it is still water, protein, and vitamins, but in the form of more whole foods. Getting in a lot of fruits, greens, veggies is the best way to get phytonutrients and vitamins for lifetime health. Every bite you take after WLS should be as nutrient dense as possible and have a purpose for promoting your lifelong health. HIgh meat and high fat does not do that.

  24. Also, whether you are willing/able to do a KETO or other very low carb plan post op. I tend to get low blood sugar so can do a lower carb, but KETO-ish leaves me wiped out, extremely low energy. I’ve watched friends drop HUGE amounts of weight VERY fast on KETO type, and suffered no blood sugar issues, but once they go back to regular balanced eating adding carbs back in, they pack the weight back on, and often times even more.😫 So if your post op plan is KETO-ish you can lose LOTS and FAST. As wise folks have stated however, whatever post op eating plan you choose, you’d be well served to try for a version of it that you can live with for the long haul- adding more calories in maintenance stage, but not having felt so carb deprived that you revert to unhealthy behaviors when it’s all said and done.     JUST GIMME THE DANG SURGERY ALREADY!!!

    alright so i did what alot of the other people in this thread did. i saw Dr weiner videos as well and am still researching because I can still go bypass if I change my mind from sleeve. i also took the nutrition packet and began logging my food and have begun interacting with the dietician following her instructions showing food log. we go over that in telehealth apmt. I cut out the foods already that the surgeon said to (carbonated beverages lol). i also had an apmt with nurse pract from the program and for weight they can pull it from your health records from your gp. though for my second apmt I just weighed and I am down 12lbs from the diet. i was told it usually takes 3-4 months to get into the surgery room. i was told I would be required to attend support group at least once so I went to that already, and I plan to go to the next one too as they have little food topics. I am already on their end game diet through the dietician, but I am not in hardcore mode. right now I do not have to count carbs in most veg, and I have been subbing with some keto premade snacks. It's a good time to start the diet if you haven't so you know what you r getting yourself into but also a good time to experiment with foods because no pouch size yet. its kinda like easing into diet slowly. also make sure to look at check list and complete those. mine had things like support group at least once, sleep study etc and I completed what I could and scheduled with gp already to get the others. (Im waiting on gp apmt for egd but also waiting for behavioral health referral to call me with apmt as I was approved to see them for assessment)
