Revision help in Minnesota
follmerpa replied to follmerpa's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi there, I was also looking at having my sleeve revised to switch, I have GERD and gained a little weight back since my sleeve surgery. But I could only find Mayo Clinic to do a revision, and they will only revise to bypass. Are you having it done for gerd as well? I also have sleep apnea real bad , I want to get away from cpap but need to lose more weight. was your process difficult? Or was Alina willing to work with you? thank you -

Hi Alex, I'm wondering if there is anything that can be done for someone in a case such as mine who has had two bariatric procedures done? I had my lap band in May 2013 and still was ~150 lbs lighter when I had my revision-to-gastric sleeve done 2 weeks ago on August 24th... it seems like I'm only able to merge the info together which either makes it look like I had the gastric sleeve done in 2013 OR that I lost 160+ lbs in 2 weeks while it's pretty funny it also makes my history appear very misleading. Thank you! -
My first post...be kind

Hi! ❤Being kind and gentle ❤ Congratulations on your success after WLS that lead to fertility. Sorry about the PPD, the joys of motherhood can be tricky sometimes But Revision may not be the focus right now. Keep that in your back pocket for emergencies only. Only your surgeon can tell if its necessary so see your Surgeon because they can definitely help but also consider support groups/therapy etc. Perhaps getting to the root of the gain will kickstart your ability to heal and continue on your journey. Plenty of people have losts gained and lost the weight again without additional surgery, so its always possible! Don't lose hope❤ Cheering you on (again)🎉 -
? About clearances
losing_the_band replied to Sajijoma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would not recommend trying to do the clearances yet, as most of them have to be done within a certain time period before surgery. You never know if you're going to have a fight with insurance, like I did. I had to go back and forth with appeals for 3.5 months before I was approved for my revision, so if I'd tried to do my clearances early, I would have just had to do them all over again, since they all had to be done within 30 days prior to having surgery. Now, once you get your date, I would try to get them done ASAP, because there might be follow-up things that you have to do that may require some waiting (a sleep study, in my case). I only had 3 weeks notice, and I wasn't going to be able to get in to see my PCP for a week and a half, so I had to go to a new doctor for my lab tests. Luckily, I was able to get everything done in about 1.5-2 weeks (delayed a few days because my pulmonologist required me to go for the sleep study before she would clear me), so now I'm just waiting for everything to be forwarded to my surgeon's office on Monday. -
Had to reschedule my appointment with the surgeon
mrs_brontosaurus posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went to the seminar on December 6 and turned in my information packet. I got a call to schedule my intake appointment and couldn’t get in until February 5. Naturally, on February 2 me and my 7 month old came down with the flu. I’ve felt like complete garbage, but I thought I might be ok to go tomorrow. Then this morning my 5 year old woke up with a fever, chills, and cough. I had to reschedule and my new appointment is March 19. It’s really not that long, but I was really looking forward to this appointment and getting the ball rolling and now I had to restart my countdown app on my phone. I’m feeling very sorry for myself. Just needed to whine a bit. I guess I’ll spend the next 42 days revising my questions for the surgeon/psych/nutritionist and pinning my aspirational wardrobe on Pinterest. -
Hang in there it will get better. Your body is still healing and you are weak from not eating/drinking like you used to. Sometimes it takes awhile to get back to yourself. I am 10 weeks post revision and had a rough first month with nausea and eating/drinking. Now I feel pretty much like my old self. Don't push yourself to hard and just think in a few months you'll be looking at the new sexier you and thinking "thank god i did this"

February Sleevers - how are you doing?
LSF replied to healthiswealth's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm losing slowly but I expected it - because mine was a revision surgery, I'm older and I carry my weight in my lower body. I also hVent exercised as much as I would like. I used to go to the track all the time to walk, I now have a bone spur in my heel. Have an appt scheduled with a podiatrist but they couldn't fit me in until mid- April. -
Revision to RNY

So what I don't understand is do people get a revision because the first one didn't work or because a few years passed? Sent from my Moto E (4) using BariatricPal mobile app -
Revision to RNY
attorneyshannon replied to Sam.is.sassy's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a revision from sleeve to bypass in March. I do not have any more heartburn—that’s completely resolved. I have had a much harder time eating this time around and still do not have solid stool. As a result, I lost 50 lbs since my revision which is more than I ever planned to be honest. I was successful with the sleeve—losing 110 and only gaining back 10 lbs over 5 years. But the heartburn was too much. The recovery has just been harder. But as a trade off I’m seeing numbers on the scale I never thought I’d see. -
I was revised to RnY on Tuesday (from VSG) my team said their revision patients have all been successful in loss. They did remind me I’m 80# less than when I started last time and went from a BMI of 52-39, so I will lose but the amounts will be less but percentage wise they should even out.

telling family (kids) about surgery
Tiffykins replied to snickersgirl9's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have an extremely open relationship with my 11 year old son. He knew about my band surgery, and my revision. When he would worry about things, I would ask him things like " won't it be fun when you and me can run around the backyard without mommy needing a break?" "won't it be fun to go out to eat and mommy not have to scoot the table closer to you and daddy" "One day would you like to give mommy your own bear hug because right now you can't reach your arms around me" "Won't it be fun when mommy can go to the beach without worrying about being tired from running in the sand?" I gave him things to think about that are age appropriate. Something tangible that could he could envision. I know this is probably extreme for some families, but my son wanted to see a VSG video of the surgery so I let him watch it on youtube. He saw how quick it was, and he felt reassured. Nothing makes him blush, or get sick at his stomach, so this helped him to see that they don't cut people up from top to bottom to do this. I explained that there were going to be at least 3 doctors with many nurses taking care of me in the O.R. 2 surgeons, and the "gas" doctor to help me sleep through surgery. Caysen's had 2 surgeries himself so this is something we can talk about, and discuss openly. Worrying is normal. If y'all are spiritual, have him pray with you. My son and I prayed together before my surgery. I let him say the prayer so he could get his emotions out in the open without having to necessarily tell me, he was telling God instead. -

Is it supposed to be so painful???
UKHEIDI replied to Sdc04c's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi I had gastric sleeve 4 years ago and didn’t have pain you are experiencing however, because of GERD, had revision to bypass . Then everything you describe was my painful experience like others had all sorts of tests when still there at week 4 which revealed nothing. At week 6 , I moved awkwardly and something ripped. I was in agony for 2 days . Then 2 days after that, all pain resolved met with surgeon and he told me that he had double stitched the muscle as he was concerned about hernia risk. Its worth getting checked out but if they find nothing , then it is part of healing process hope you get better soon -
From what I have seen, you may or may not be off of insulin and meds immediately - I think your surgeon is just being optimistic and won't actually discharge you without verifying your status. My wife was diabetic, just short of being insulin dependent and under treatment for it for around twenty years, and it took her the better part of a year to be fully off all of diabetic meds. The surgeon explained that generally, the longer one has been under treatment, the longer it takes to get off of the meds, though there are some long term diabetics who leave the hospital free of all meds, even with just a sleeve or RNY rather than the stronger DS. Her diabetes is still in remission 15-16 years later, despite some subsequent regain and losses. A few years ago, we talked to a woman in our support group who had an RNY some twenty years prior, and now her diabetes was coming out of remission with only some moderate regain, so she was in line to get that revised into a DS to knock it out for good. So, it is still very much worth getting the surgery even if you don't immediately go into remission. Note that I am referring to the "traditional" BPD/DS, which is known to have a 98-99% success rate with T2 diabetes, rather than the simplified SIPS/SADI/"Loop DS", which is not as well established.

Band gone, sleeve in
Elisabethsew replied to techgurl1988's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had the band removed and was revised to the sleeve by Dr. Aceves and had no problems (unlike the band). I love the sleeve and don't regret my decision. -
Hey everyone, I've been reading everything on this forum for at least a year but now I'm ready to officially get in the game. I'm 34 live in queens/Long Island area. I have been struggling with my weight for at least 20 years. I had lap band surgery in January of 2011. My highest weight before that was 370. I lost about 90lb on my own cuz I never reached any restriction with to band then I had to stop seeing the dr cuz off financial issues. I went all the way down to 259 and that's where I started to go right back up. Last December I saw a new doctor and decided to revise and get RNY. However I didn't get the band removed until yesterday. ( dr won't do in one surgery) I wanted to take the time to get my head in the new lifestyle. I went back up to 350 but started to practice a clean eating Lifestyle. I try to be as gluten free as possible ( found out thru allergist I am intolerant meaning gluten caused inflammatory response and palpitations in my body. Within a week of cutting back on gluten my back pain and palpitations just about went away!!! ) I'm down to 323 and want to be as close to 300 or under b4 RNY surgery. I have to wait 6 weeks between surgery. I have done most of the pre op requirements I have sleep study on thurs and I have to see psychiatrist. I hoping for first week in dec I have last pcp visit in nov. So excited/scared/ready. So hello again! ????

New here- looking for advice on lapband revision!
NewNewMe replied to ama2414's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I got my band in 2005. Lost 85 lbs the first year and then had horrible reflux issues. They took out the fluid and I yoyo dieted for 8 yrs. I finally decided to have revision surgery. I never liked the idea of bypass so when I heard about the sleeve I was all in. I had my surgery on 4/30 and I am so glad I did. The doc said my band was a mess and ended up pulling my stomach out in pieces. He said my stomach was close to closing off. Very scary. I can't begin to tell you how much better I feel with that band gone. No reflux, no more vomiting, no more stuck. And my hunger is gone, it never was with the band. -

I don't know about revised instructions from Inamed about stitching the band to the stomach but I would like to know - definitely! I know my surgeon did that and most surgeons that I have spoken to (I am in medical sales) that do the band do stitch it to prevent slippage. In any case, the thing with the PA shouldn't worry you. In most states, PAs are allowed to assist in surgical procedures so they are very qualified to stick a needle in a port. My friend had cancer and had a port-a-cath put in and the LPN at the chemo center would do the sticks, so I'm sure an NP or PA will be fine. The "I'll learn to do it" part is a little disconcerting though. There is no one near you who has experience doing the fills? Regarding your age, 58 is young girlfriend! My mother in law is 66 and she had it done in March and frankly has had fewer complications than me and I'm 39! She is definitely losing a little slower though. She's down about 25 lbs since March 9 which is still GREAT weight loss. You're going to have to "bite the bullet" and tell your DH. I know it will be difficult at first, especially where he doesn't understand your struggle, but remind yourself that you are doing this for YOU and that, while of course his opinion is important to you, it won't change anything. And once he sees his "new" sexy hot mama who eats healthy and exercises right along with him, trust me if he ever argued about you doing it - he'll stop. Good luck with your journey

Just keep doing what you are supposed to. Your body will stall or pause while it re-calibrates itself. As long as you are hitting your metrics, getting your exercise and doing what you are supposed to be doing at 3 weeks... you'll be fine. Does your scale also do body fat? If not, it's entirely possible you are losing body fat but not weight, happened to me a few times already since my revision. The length varies from person to person, but just rest assured knowing it does pass! Just keep staying on target! You got this!

Revision Patient

I can tell you stories for days ...that band damaged my organs...Revised to bypass Dec 28,2015... I am sore as hell and as happy as I can be.No regrets...no more fooling around....lost 17 pounds already...get the bypass!!!!!Don't walk ...run....congrats. -
Let me add one more item. This is just my opinion. If you're a patient who feels like they can't control their binging or cravings, the sleeve may be a better choice. I like to think of the satiety or feelings with the sleeve as more tangible than the band. The band relies on patients to feel a very subtle signal that they've eaten enough. This is somewhat intangible for many banders. Some of the patients in this group do not succeed with the band and revise to another surgery(one of the benefits of the band).

Hi All - I am a 58 year old female... wife, mother of 2 grown boys and grandmother of 2 as well. I am having RNY revision from LapBand on 10/3 at Roger Williams Hospital with Dr. Pohl. I live in Taunton, MA but chose a doctor in RI due to my company's bariatric policy requiring a UHC certified Hospital of Excellence. I have heard AWESOME things about Dr. Pohl so am very happy he is my surgeon. I had the lapband installed in 2008... lost 58 lbs in 6 months... and over the last few years have gained back every pound of my loss. I get stuck all the time and end up having to vomit to stop the pain. Sometimes it lasts for hours. I am excited to be a part of this fledgling group and hope to offer as much support as I am sure to receive from all of you.
