Doctor says he wouldn't let his own sister have rny!
Introvert replied to bellabloom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My hips used to kill me. My knees used to ache. I'm only 3 months out 45 pounds down and am running up stairs. (Sometimes 2 at a time) off BP medicine and feel great. Sure you can take pain pills your whole life but why would you want to? I think it's just as risky having needles injected into your spine! If not the RNY try the sleeve. It's YOUR body, you have to be your best advocate... -
Bypass Feb 2016 - any support groups?
lxpete80 replied to lxpete80's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Having bypass in February? We are starting a closed/secret group on Facebook and would LOVE to have you join us. 2 years ago I had a sleeve done, but due to complications they are revising me from sleeve to bypass. I had an AMAZING group on Facebook that all had the same surgery that month. We were going through the same things whether it was venting one day, sharing milestones, and made lasting friendships! Since it's a secret group there is some hoops to go through to get added (sorry, Facebook makes it harder) The good thing is that it's completely secret meaning none of your friends can know see posts or ever know you're in it This makes it a safe place for us because I know for some it's not something they want to share. Here's how to join: 1. Go to https://www.facebook.com/lanaepetersen and send me a friend request 2. I will accept the friend request, then send you an invite to the group. 3. After you are added to the group I'll unfriend -
PreOp weight loss?
_Kate_ replied to shannonlarson209's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was asked to stay on the liver diet for two weeks before surgery (I did it for 18 days in the end). My surgeon asked me to do it to shrink the liver rather than lose weight so didn't set a target. -

pre-approval evaluation process
HurricaneU replied to lili94's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I just had my 4th appointment last week, so 2 more to go. My nurse just weighs me and has never asked to wear certain clothing. I also try to wear the same, Tshirt and gym shorts and I always take off my shoes. I just do it to be consistent. So there's the psych test, cardio test and perhaps sleep test. I guess I just want to make certain it isn't going to be just another failed and expensive, not to mention invasive diet. My daughter calmed me a lot today telling me about a documentary she saw on it and how well they did, she is VERY supportive of me having it done. So is my son, so is my husband. My personal feeling right now is I need rapid weight loss due to health conditions and this seems to promise that.. I think I would be too scared to eat too much! The weight loss when I haven't lost anything significant for ages due to not being able to exercise at this weight would be a huge reward to me. I will NEVER EVER get this weight again.. I don't care what I have to do. I am attending a seminar next week with my husband and meeting the surgeon on Aug 18. With my insurance and the timeline they say I could be banded in 8 weeks.

I was also not given an "amount" to eat, just told to eat till I was satisfied. I can't eat that much in one sitting without getting pain in my chest and back, but I think it varies person to person. I was told not to eat for more than 30 minutes in one sitting, because if you eat so slowly that your stomach empties out then you're basically grazing so it's defeating the sleeve... however, I am hungry after the small amount I eat. I can eat 1-2 eggs worth of egg product or 1/3 cup of refried beans, but I may be hurrying to get it all down in a half hour so I may still be eating too quickly. Curious to see what others say.

I'm 3 weeks out as well, and I definitely get Sharp pains. For me it's mostly gas, I literally walk it off or stretch. Sent from my 831C using BariatricPal mobile app

I don't remember the skin around the glue being red just iodine discoloration. My glue started peeling after about a week. It was totally gone after about 3 weeks. It definitely got itchy. It also pinched me for a few days when the swelling went down. If it's really really itchy and red you may want to call your doctor to confirm you aren't having a reaction.

Yes. For about 2-3 days. I don't fight it. I roll with it and that has worked for me. I was scared in the beginning but month after month the same thing. I have learned to listen to and trust my body.

Smoking before surgery
new_journey4me replied to Shanese01's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started reading a book that came highly recommended "Easy Way to Quit Smoking" by Alan Carr. My best friend read it 3 years ago and as soon as she finished the book she hasn't smoked since. I've heard it works for others as well. It tells you to smoke as you read, I'm finding the book very interesting so far. The author was a smoker himself so it's coming from a smokers point of view. Just thought I'd pass that along. Good luck! -
I know im not near 1 month out yet (bout half way) but i feel like im doing something wrong. First 3 days i lost 10lbs- i get it i wasnt eating or drinking much at all... then i got better about Protein shakes and Water... its been 9 more days and i havent lost one pound since. I started yoga post op day 7 (just gentle stretches, breathing and mild strength exercises) and did three days of that. Wondered if this happened to others in the early time right after surgery. I avg 50-80 gm protein daily, getting round 750 cal per day, still not getting the full amt of water in but working on it. I feel like im smaller but the scale isnt matching... i did jump to puree a little early (got so tired of shakes, water and soup!) but doing well with tuna and low fat mayo (takes me all day to get through one can but its 33gm protein and only 250 cal or so) anyhew thanks ps i was 280 at start of program, 5mths later i was 243 going into surgery and now 233 at 5'6'' Lindsey

Smoking before surgery
A New Me for Me replied to Shanese01's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor will not even schedule surgery until you quit and she does blood tests to check. FYI -- It takes 2 weeks to get the nicotine completely out of your system. -
@@francheskii I couldn't agree more with Djmohr! We were taught at Mayo to have 3 meals and 2 high Protein Snacks every day. That's what I've done and at 5 months post-op it's working just fine. I'm never hungry and get an average of 120-125 grams of protein in every day while staying between 800-850 calories. I've included a page out of my "Nutritional Guidelines" book given to us which breaks down every stage of the diet. Hope it helps. Congrats and keep on your successful weight loss journey

The reason you are probably snacking so much is because you are not getting your Protein. It is that dense protein from food that will fill you up and keep you full. I went through this as well right around the same time. My nut suggested 2 bites of protein for every 1 bite of good carbs like vegetables and fruit. 3 meals a day. If you get hungry in between which should not yet be the case but it is possible, try drinking 8 oz. of milk for your snack. Milk turns to a solid filling you up and provides protein. You might even try fair life milk which has added protein to it. This will help you get to your protein goal. You also should ask yourself am I really hungry or am I dehydrated? Dehydration causes the exact symptoms of hunger. When you get that feeling in between meals, drink Water or crystal light until it goes away. If that feeling comes back right away, drink that cup of milk. You are likely dealing with head hunger or dehydration.

Almost one month stall...OVER! Yay!
Cerika111 replied to alwaysvegas's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I hit a 3 week stall too! I knew the weight was one my body was at for years pre-surgery and my last gain before finally having the surgery done, but it was frustrating. I am now back to losing almost a pound a day for more than a week! Yay! Knowing this stall ended will help me get through the inevitable next one. Hoping all of you are feeling great! -
work related issues and restrictions
Lou:) replied to Amanda R's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You don't need to tell any specifics. You can say you had a hernia repaired and cannot lift anything heavy or it could pop back out, but then it would be work comp. Casheirs can do some lifting, but I don't see why they could not have you work around it... or move you to a floor rep spot for a short few weeks. -
I had surgery on 5/6 and yet to hit my protein goals. I have a very hard time drinking the shakes and the Isopure is disgusting. Is anyone else having this problem? What can I expect if I do not begin to hit my daily goals in the next few weeks?

Hi, I was banded on April 18. I lost weight right away and have lost a total of 21 pounds. That was the first month. I have not lost any since. My usual diet for the day is breakfeast - Quest Protein bar or 2/3 c cottage cheese or a scramble egg with peppers. lunch I usually eat 3-4 ounces of turkery or chicken breast or 2/3 c cottage cheese. dinner is 3-4 ounces of protein ( pork chop, turkey burger, chicken or fish) and 1/2 c .I even weigh and measure my food.

hospital stay
winning_by_losing replied to jessb418's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my program, all 3 surgeons tell everyone to expect to be in the hospital 2 nights. I had surgery at 7AM on Tuesday and when the surgeon came by to check on me Wednesday morning he told me I could leave as soon as I could arrange a ride (that took most of the day as everything had been planned for a Thursday release). But with all of the medication, monitoring and walking, I never had enough down time to miss anything/anyone. Had I needed to stay that 2nd night it could have been different, but I can only guess. -
I have a 2 yr old son and 4 yr old dd, I had to stay In hospital for 3 nights went Friday, my surgeon said I could go home on Sunday but I elected to stay one more night as I was very sore and afraid the babies would be climbing all over me to soon. We all co -sleep. My husband brought them to see me everyday though 2-3 times a day, we sent videos and talked on the phone, I missed them very much but they were the reason I wanted wls so as a 40 yr old mom I would be able to keep up with them. Don't worry you will do fine and your son will not remember you being gone once your back home.

I've read some of the threads about loosing weight before surgery "getting rid of the fat on the liver'??? does anyone know if you qualify for the lap band if you have Hep C? i know they require blood tests - how about biopsy's? i haven't seen anything about quitting smoking either? i have come up with some other questions... 1. what is this "programs that insurance doesn't cover? gym membershiip and such? 2. why do you have to loose 10% of your body weight before surgery? at my weight that would be 35 or more pounds. 3. Pre Op liquid Diet? is this something the doc prescribes? what does it consist of? or do you just blend everything in a blender? 4. have any of you experienced the shakes/dizzy feeling, from being on the liquid diet? 5. although i have "tried" to eat better in the past, I haven't really went on a "diet" for any length of time. will the doctor refuse to do the surgery because of this? 6. I have an HMO through Medicaid (NJ) Horizon NJ Health. Does anyone know if they cover the post-op procedures such as "Fills" or anything else? thanks susan

FYI...allergies and hunger
jdmama911 replied to scootergirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That is awesome you mentioned that!! I was having awful nausea even after a week post op. I went into the doctors concerned about that and something unrelated. At the end of my appt. I asked when I was allowed to go back on my Allegra and my other allergy meds. My PA looked at me and said "Take them and see how you feel tomorrow. I bet your nausea is being caused by post nasal drip." She was totally right. Now, it's been about 10 days and I've been getting hunger pangs and wondering why. I just realized today it's been a few days since I've taken my Allegra!! That's great. First thing in the a.m. I'll be taking it -
