Thanks so much for the information. I am not able to see a surgeon right now so I was looking for some information on here and other sites. I have been on a liquid only diet for the past week. Just Slim Fast, pureed bean Soup and Water. I was pretty surprised to have restriction back so quickly. I am very very guilty of "packing" it in. Especially these last 3 months. I lost restriction and thought oh well, I can eat more so I went for it. I know, BAD. This whole thing has scared me straight! Thanks again!!!

I was banded one day after you and I'm learning that patience is the name of the game, and that is hard! I've actually had four fills and I'm still not restricted. I can tell that I have the band (hurray!) because I do feel it if I try to eat a restaurant size meal, but basically I can eat everything, including big Vitamin pills. I'm losing about 2 pounds a week but it is from plain old fashioned dieting just like I did before I had the band. I have another fill scheduled for next week and just like the last few times, I'm hoping it will be the one that pushes me into my sweet spot. It could take awhile before you reach your sweet spot. All I can suggest is to do the same thing I'm doing.... track what you're eating, make healthy choices, limit your calories, and exercise! Good luck and hang in there!

I am scheduled for banding on Tuesday (4/29/08) and have been able to go off both my metformin and my blood pressure medications just from the weight I have lost on the five week long pre-surgery diet. I'm amazed. I've lost 21 pounds since March 18. I went off the metformin and the bp drugs about a week ago and my blood pressure was 122/74 yesterday and my glucose levels have been averaging about 95 to 110. I had about 200 average on my glucose levels on 1000 mg of metformin prior to starting the pre-surgery diet. Never been on insulin. I feel really good. Hungry - but good!!

Does your Dr put in a fill during surgery or does he make you wait 6weeks????
shell04937 replied to shell04937's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Did you feel like you had restriction post op? I did for the first couple of weeks but this week I do not notice much. I am trying to be patient until my fill but I had hoped I would be down 25 or 30 lbs by my November 20th wedding anniversary and at this rate I will be lucky if I am down 15 lbs post op. Oh well it will be here before I know it.... -
If you are losing at a steady rate of 1-2 pounds per week AND have good restriction, than chances are you DON'T need a fill.

Hard time sleeping...
joatsaint replied to Buttercupbrown's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had horrible acid reflux for a few months post-op. I never took anything for it, just rode it out. I had to sleep propped up, on an incline, like in a hospital bed, to reduce the burning. Also, I wasn't able to lay on my back or side for weeks, I'd feel a pulling sensation somewhere inside when I did, so that was a 2nd reason I had to sleep propped up. I've never been able to sleep in a chair or recliner - although my dad could be an Olympic champion if sleeping in a recliner was a sport! So, I took an old comforter and rolled it into a big log - that plus a pillow, gave me enough of an incline to sleep comfortably and reduce the burning. -
Something INteresting at Support Group Meeting
M2G replied to lkcraig316's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too wish we had a support group for just sleevers, but we get lumped in with the RNYers. It's okay, and I've only met one other sleever at support group (been sleeved almost 5 months). I really don't miss my old way of eating and I absolutely adore that I can be full on such tiny portions. I truly think that the biggest part of the success of the sleeve is directly linked to the loss of ghrelin. I could easily defeat my WL efforts by eating Cookies, candy and ice cream. But I truly want to make this a success. Now my husband was just sleeved 2 weeks ago. He is on mushies but the notes from our surgeon extremely limit the choices of mushies. He is really missing food right now. I hope it is temporary. -
After your surgeon's office submits all the paperwork for approval, it could be anywhere from one day to a month or so -- it really varies depending on your insurance company and your luck of the draw. If I were you I would just assume you won't get a decision for 3-4 weeks, then if it comes early you'll (hopefully) have a good surprise. Best wishes!

Hi Everyone, I'm Linda, from Greenwood, Indiana. I first saw a doctor on July 3rd, just a consultation for anyone who wanted information about weight loss surgery, one of those group meetings. I had already decided I wanted Lap Band, so I stayed and filled out the paper work for insurance approval etc. I expected two or three months just to get approval or longer, then all the test that follow and surgery in 5 or 6 months. I got a call the last week in July from the surgeon, saying they had approval, and giving me a surgery date of Sept. 8th. I was in shock all day! I've already had the psych. eval. and go for pre-op Diet & nutrition consultation on Friday. This is all moving so fast! I'm a teacher and go back to work on Aug. 18th, then three weeks later I'm off for surgery. Not the best timing, but I'm putting myself and my health first this time! I'm wondering how fast I'll recover and be able to go back to work. What were your experiences????

When will I get approval
cdealdec replied to danybx's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You can call your insurance company and ask. I have been doing that because my surgeons office claim they were going to send the paper work over week before last then last week and they still have yet to receive it. So my surgeons office is playing with my emotions. I would call your insurance company they will be glad to tell you. -
I am really groggy for three or four hours afterwards. It takes me up to a week to get out of the "fog".

I posted a few weeks back because I couldn't keep anything down. This has been progressive and it been going on for over 6 months. I went to the surgeons office three times with issues and all the Fluid taken out. The last visit in July I requested the appointment to be with the doctore (Atkinson) and still, when I went for the appointment I was seen by the PA. The PA said she would talk to doctor about the band slipping and check with my insurance to re-position or remove the band. I didn't hear back for a few weeks. I called the office and they said that because my insurance was now Aetna, not Blue Cross, Dr. Atkinson would not perform the surgery, even out of network. As you can imagine this was very frustrating. As the months went on, my symptoms kept getting worse. I dedided to start calling other bariatric surgeons in the area and no one would take me as a patient since they didn't perform the surgery. Long story, but I finally went to my regular doctor because I couldn't hold liquid or food down for several days. She contacted a bariatric surgeon and he told her to get me an upper GI. I still wasn't sure if he was going to take me as a patient. Anyway, I got a call from the surgeon's coordinator and she couldn't believe my upper GI. It was the worse slip they had ever seen. She explained that the doctor usually take other doctors patients, but my condition was very severe. My entire stomach has slipped through the band. The band is now located between my stomach and intestines. This can be a life threatning situation. So I was told not to throw up any more until I coudl see the doctor. My appointment is Tuesday and my surgery will be scheduled. Sorry for such a long post but this has been such a bad experience for me and needed to vent. I have a few friends that have the band and it works great for them. But for me, the band has to be removed and can't be replace. I have learned alot with this band and hope to continue my weight loss with other means. If anyone has had this type of band slippage I would love to hear from you as I don't know what to expect with the surgery.

I am being banded on April14th Mon. I'm so excited I can hardly stand it! I am so glad I have made this decision. I did self pay and for that I got to skip a lot of steps. From start to finish it took me about 3 weeks. I have started on a self imposed liquid diet (not required by my surgeon). I do worry a little about an enlarged liver, so I am doing the liquid diet for my own peace of mind. Good luck to all just starting and may we all become more healthy for life!!!!~piautecutie

Can't believe how I can stick to this soup and shake diet but I can't stick to a diet when there is plenty to eat. Cheat all the time. Guess it's because I know there is surgery at the end of it. Have all my work finished now so have nearly two weeks to myself to totally relax and recover from the banding. Less than 48 hours now - really excited, and scared at the same time.

It has been an exciting time for me with all of the life changing events we have experienced in the last 4 weeks. We retired from the military, bought a house, got a great civilian job, went on a 10 day vacation and GOT BANDED!!! Since starting on the pre-op diet and then having surgery I have lost 27 lbs. and have dropped two pant sizes. I put up my clothes when I got too big for them last year and said when I get surgery I'll be able to wear them. It has only been 2 and a half weeks and I have waited TOO long for someof them. I skipped right past them. I am not complaing, just observing. God has blessed us in so many ways and the best one is that I feel I am getting my health back. We are doing 3-4 miles per day and the doctor said I can start to lift again this week if I take it easy...no crunches. I haven't eaten perfectly, but my husband said I am eating very little, but I feel like a pig. I was able to put on my D.H.'s ACU (Army uniform) shirt and zip it up. IT IS A SMALL!!!! The pants can't even go to my thighs yet...but they will someday!

I have been poked and prodded and have suffered countless indignities in preparation for my lap-band surgery. I have watched bloody slideshows and You-Tube videos and heard horror stories galore about potential problems associated with the surgery itself; yet, what did I fear worse than death itself? HUNGER!!! I knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that during my Pre-Surgery Liquid Diet I would be starving to death! I worked myself into a bit of a snit at the prospect. I had a “Food Funeral” for all my favorite foods I would never again be able to enjoy: I mourned the loss of the Southern Cheeseburgers at the Penguin Drive-In, said a fond farewell to ribs at Shane’s Rib Shack, shed a tear for my husband’s gourmet grilled Rib-Eyes. I did so much goodbye-ing, that I gained 5 extra pounds prior to the coming of the Grim Reaper, bringing with him the Liquid Diet of Death!!! I did my ground work, you betcha! I researched and researched the most palatable Protein Powder. I bought a shaker, a new blender, and stockpiled Campbells 98% fat free Cream of_________ (you fill in the blank) Soups until I had enough put by to see me through a nuclear holocaust! I sampled this Protein Powder, and that, until I came to the conclusion that none of them are too tasty, but with some doctorin’, they’re almost as good as a Chick-Fil-A shake (without the whipped cream, of course!) I was even able to go out to eat with my family without salivating all over their meals. Those protein shakes are pretty filling, and seem to give me heaps of energy! The first day of the much feared liquid diet came and went…and guess what? I didn’t starve to death! I didn’t even get hungry! Another day passed…still, not too bad! The morning of the third day of the Liquid Diet I hopped on the scales, and was surprised to find that five pounds I’d gained during my week long“Food Funeral” were all gone! Today began the 5th day of the Liquid Diet, and I was down another pound and a half…6.5 so far! If I can avoid the Papa John’s commercial featuring the close-up of the pizza with bubbling cheese, I might just make it through this next couple of weeks alive!

You did far better than most would've done! Went to ACME last week...couldn't resist, had to have a few char-broiled ersters!

I have just been told from the Dr.'s office that it will now be the end of July if I am lucky before I am rescheduled. That is another 2 months. All becasue of an infection in my jaw that I am sure I would be cleared for in time for my original date of next week. I have talked with my husband and decided that I can't put my life on hold any longer. It has been 6 months. Now to wait another 2 is silly. I am down 12 lbs from the 8 days of pre-op diet. I am going to run with it. I am going to try to lose all I can. I can only lose 3 lbs in 2 months or I don't qualify. I have put off going to work until I had the surgery. We are retiring in September from the military and I told my DH I would get a job. Now it would be late August instead of Mid-late June. I am trying to do what God wants, but I am not sure right now what that is.:confused2:

Does your Dr put in a fill during surgery or does he make you wait 6weeks????
drcollier replied to shell04937's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was banded on 9/11 and I did notice some restriction for the first couple of weeks, but it has lessened now.I still have to eat slower and it feels like some things get a little hung up as I eat. The burping thing was an ordeal for about 2 weeks for me, but I no longer experience that. My first fill will be in a couple of weeks. It sounds like what you are going through is not unusual. -
Does your Dr put in a fill during surgery or does he make you wait 6weeks????
Carlene replied to shell04937's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had to wait 5 weeks after surgery before I got my first fill. It's hard to be patient, I know, but you have to think of this in the long-term. In my case, it has taken almost 2 years to lose 97 pounds. I am still about 10 pounds from goal, but I don't really work at losing any more, so it serves me right. I wear a size 2/4 and couldn't be happier - except for the vacant skin that is still (literally) hanging around. Depending on which band you have, it may take several fills to achieve good restriction. Don't expect to hit the "sweet spot" with your first one. One more thing....you will do 100 times better if you follow the bandster rules. Eat protein first, then veggies, then carbs. Stay away from liquid calories (ice cream, chocolate, etc) and exercise. GOOD LUCK!!! -
Making all my favorite dinners this week.
rodeomom969 replied to mommyjamie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's what I did. I went to all my favorite restaurants and don't regret it. I would try to cut down on sugars a little in the last few days so that it will be a little less hard on the withdrawls. Good luck and enjoy your last week. -

I start my liquid diet on Friday for surgery on the 21st. This is my food funeral. Portuguese pichadinos Flank stuffed with spinach and feta Prosciutto wrapped chicken breast Not sure what to make the other 2 days. Maybe pizza and Chinese. -
This is strictly my personal opinion, but it's a matter of works for you. I know people who do both. Personally, I go by gross calories. If I subtract exercise calories then my loss stalls. But, I know I plenty of people who go by net and do great. I'd try it both ways if I were you. Do a week using net then a week using gross and see which works out better for you.

I was really excited when I lost 15 pounds 8 days after surgery. Then it seemed like nothing happened. I'm almost 5 weeks out and have lost a total of 20 pounds. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one frustrated.
