I have heard from more than one person (they both, incidentally, had gastric bypass, rather than lapband) that when they hit a plateau on the scale, they have found they are losing inches - even though the scale is steady. Good luck on your journey...

Available Lap Band Buddy / Mentor Got my band in '97
deelooka posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was under the FDA study, and have been through it all. Revised Sept of 2004 and it gave me a new lease on life. At 5'1, I weighed 221, and now around 155. Frankly, I can lose another few pounds, and I'm going for another fill this week, but I won't let it get me down. If you're in the NYC area, I can meet you to talk about the surgery (If you're nervous about it) or how you feel post-op. -

Thanks folks! Just in case anyone is interested in organic non GMO powders I have included a very trusted list. http://foodbabe.com/2012/12/13/the-healthiest-protein-powders-on-the-market/ I think I will probably have to mix it with more than just Water but it will be worth it to bypass fake sugars which are a curse for me. -
Relieved that my GES came back normal, but food gets stuck in my stomach above the band and in my esophagus.

Yes...if I revise, it will be to VSG. My husband is afraid of this, but his only comfortable options are another band or nothing. I can't do malabsorption due to other issues. We're still trying to figure this out. My GI doctor didn't think the band was at fault, but will be interesting to hear what he has to say in two weeks. -

I am an analytical type. I reasearched things alot before revising to sleeve from a failed band. I am glad I understood that I might not have as good of results, based on the statistics. That gave me a chance, both preop and in the early months post revision to ask alot of "why" questions. Surgeon, nutritionalist, other revisionistas - anybody I could glean this from. I learned that many people with the band have learned to "eat alot of sliders", graze and most importantly, ignore that "full feeling". It is crazy, that sometimes your body really adapts. So, since I was armed with knowledge, I was able to be very diligent about those underlying things and i believe it made a difference. -
Husband’s mental state after surgury
Tampawife posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Please help me! My husband had Gastric bypass 1 year ago and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder 3 months post (no history of psych issues), now he doesn’t want to take meds and now is experiencing paranoid delusions directed at me that I am bugging our house, wire tapping him, installing cameras, etc. I did not do those things and do not even have the skill set to make any of that possible. Are psychological issues a thing with this procedure? Has anyone experienced anything like this? His family is saying we should just divorce, I don’t want that, I want my husband back!! Any insight would be helpful .... -
My boyfriend and I just started dating he had gastric bypass surgery 3 months ago. I have a degree in culinary arts and am trying to develop new recipes/ideas for us. I too want to transition to his diet so we both live healthier lives. Any recipes, suggestions, or comments would be greatly appreciated.

I lost 30lbs of the 100+ I needed to lose with the band. The only reason I lost so much was due to an only liquid diet. I couldn't get anything else down. I was miserable and my husband thought I looked sickly. I would try to eat chicken breast and it would come back up or hurt when it finally went down. I was banded in 2009. Now when I eat I have anxiety. Will it go down, will it get stuck, why can't I eat properly? I ammore focused on food now than I was pre band. I hope your surgeon let's you change to the sleeve if that's what you want. I am in the process of getting a revision and I can't wait until I don't have to fear food anymore.

I am not an expert but have done extensive research. My surgeon DOES NOT even place bands any more because of all of the complications. Please think long and hard before you choose that option. I chose gastric bypass because the long term results were better than sleeve and more reflux and nausea with sleeve. Good luck to you!

I would never do the band again. I just got approved for a revision. I also became bulimic. It was so stressful. I couldn't eat anything healthy like chicken salad vegetables etc. I vomited almost daily. It was embarrassing and made me so anxious I went with the band cuz I was too afraid of a more invasive surgery. Never again. In the 14 months I have had it I only lost 24 pounds. Good luck and be confidant with your decision!

Would U Do It Over If U Could? (Gastric Bypass)

Hi all I haven't had the surgery yet but am nervous and excited at same time. Just would like to know who would or wouldn't do it. Tu -
This is my first post here - I just scheduled surgery for 6/24 - yay! About mortality rates - my understanding is that for bypass surgery the rate is 1 in 200, but for the lap band it's only 1 in 2000. So rest a bit easier!

I am in the medical profession, and was banded on Sept 18th. I have lost 20 pounds so far...You have to go into this surgery with the right mental attitude towards food and life. This is a LIFESTYLE CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is not an easy fix...if you cant get your mind around the fact that you will have to change your eating habits, and exercise then this will not work for you. The band is a TOOL, its not going to make you lose weight, its a tool to assist in your weight loss. If you want to lose weight and not really do much work, then the band is not for you...maybe the bypass is a better option. Your family is not educated on what the band is, or does by what you wrote. You are not going to have mental distress because you can't eat a normal size plate of spagetti. You can eat most foods, depending on the person. Me personally have a hard time eating white starches because they get stuck, and its uncomfortable, so I dont do it..I guess if I really wanted them I could suffer through the pain but its not worth it, and I dont miss it! This is something that you have to do when you are mentally ready to do so. If you are not a decision maker, then you need to talk with a professional about how to make a life altering decision that is for your health. NO one can make this decision for you. I LOVE MY BAND...and I can honestly say this is the best thing I have done for myself. I eat pretty much what I want, just smaller portions..I dont deprive myself, but the band does not allow me to overeat. You wont be able to eat 5 Cookies and a bag of chips...Im good to get 1 or 2 cookies down on an empty stomach. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me. Good luck, and do whats best for you! Shauna -

That is awesome! You're my hero right now! I just found out about the switch yesterday & todays my last NUT appt required for insurance...I hope to find out a little more later today. I hope I come out as smooth as you. My anxiety is kickin up like it did in the beginning over what can go wrong. I know I need to chill. I may be better off with bypass. Keep me informed on your progress will ya Mrs.glo! You will be just fine. The anxiety is natural and it will serve you well because it'll keep you focused on what to do to avoid all the things that can go wrong and should they occur you have a wealth of support and info here to help you get back on track. All the best to you sister girl I will keep in touch. You Go Girl!!! -
I'm on the five-year plan. I've got the bad polyps. This is my year to get it done. I've never had trouble with the prep in the past, but now I have a little pouch. The prep includes drinking a massive amount Water along with a whole bottle of miralax and magnesium citrate. I asked the nurse (surgeon's team) and they said to ask the gastroenterology folks when I made my appointment. When I made my appointment, I asked about prep alternatives and they weren't sure. They asked me to check with my primary physician. Surely, I can't be the first gastric bypass person to get a colonoscopy at this rather large clinic in Minneapolis. Has anyone here had a colonoscopy done after they've had weight-loss surgery? Did you have an alternative to the prep or the procedure? I thought I would explore my options before writing my primary care physician an email. I will also google it, but do want to hear first hand from people about their experience (pros and cons). This way I could tell her which alternative I prefer. Thank you so much for your responses!

very cute....reminds me of the story, when my mom had bypass and lost lots of weight, my little niece who was potty training, got the potty ring out for my mom, since she now had a "little butt" -
I had band slippage, erosion, protrusion, port site pain, blockage, vomiting, gerd and gained back the weight....revised to RNY....priceless.I feel great.

@Skinnygirl04 I'm getting a revision. I can tell you that my initial surgeon had tendency to push for the stages sooner than other patients. The warning signs are your body's way of telling you ENOUGH. In my case, my nose would run and my heart would beat fast...sounds strange but they are effects with some people. In regards to soup as more of a puree, the thickened ones I did the sip shots out of a medicine cup like the water after your surgery. It worked and usually after 3 to 4 sips, it was game over and my nose would run. Hope this helps.

Cough/cold meds that are safe for us RNYers

I work with a bunch of jerks who come to work sick and use their sick days for vacation. Now I've got this terrible cough happening. Can anyone recommend cough syrup or cough drops or cold medicine that are ok for us bypassed folks? Everything I have at home seems to have alcohol of some sort in it :-/ -
Pre-op, how much did you lose?
MKJohnson15 replied to MKJohnson15's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
ROBIN, My preop diet is liquids only. I have cheated several times with a hard boiled egg or a slice of turkey or chicken. Nothing like the cheats I used to do on diets. I am allowed to drink 5 low calorie, low fat, high protein shakes a day (my doc lets me choose out of 5 different brands.) Nothing is provided to me. I purchase them locally. Since I'm a revision patient, and need two surgeries, I've been on the diet for over a month now and I still have 13 days till surgery. I'm SO TIRED OF SHAKES. I swear. I only had 315 calories yesterday because I just could not force myself to drink another shake. I just couldn't. I can't wait for this part to be over! -

Dear LapHappy, I too have fallen off the wagon. I was banded 11/07 I started out at 225 lowest weight with band was apprx 183 now I am back to 195 after losing 5lib over the last fw weeks. I will admit I have cheated, drank h2o while eating so I can eat more etc... I never really felt restriction. Approx 2 mths after i had the lapband surgery, i started with so GI issues. I was told I had IBS Irritable bowel sydrome. This was/is very difficult to deal with. i have not see my dr in about 18mts. I too am afraid of wht he will say. I am afraind he is going to tell me that i hve to have the band removed due to the IBS, but then i think maybe i want it removed because of the IBS... It is fustrating. I am soo sorry to just go on and on about this. I dont know anyone who has the band. I have one friend that had the gastric bypass she lost 150lb looks andfeel great and just doesnt understand or remember being overweight, etc... may be we can start the process over as a group of banders who are recommiting? LEt me know how you do and keep in touch RiceChex:crying: (christina) -
Maybe the reflux was caused by a too tight band. Although we think that the tighter the better it doesn't work like that - tight bands mean you cannot eat healthy, satisfying foods so you start eating high cal, unsatisfying sliders and gain weight. Maybe you should look at having your band refilled slowly, it may still be able to help. If not then I am sure you can revise to a bypass or a sleeve if that is really what you want to do.
-
I am having same problem and it is not because my band was too tight. My stomach shifted up above the band. They took all the fluid out and I had to wait 8 weeks to let my stomach go back down. When I went back in to start the refill I did not see my regular doctor and this doctor decided I need to have an EGD before refilling my band. He is also telling me that I may have to have surgery to fix it. I had to get an approval from our insurance and wait for a date for the EGD. I am scheduled to have it next Wednesday. It's will be almost 3 months since they took fluid out and I have gained about 15 pounds. I don't want the sleeve or bypass. I have been a success story with the band. I just want my band back and working like it did before all this started. I am very discouraged
