It's nice to have you here April. I had a revision from Lap Band to sleeve about 6 days ago. The members of this forum are awesome and very supportive. They are also full of wonderful information from someone who has been there done that. Best of luck to you!

Year after bypass surgery. Question regarding food & protine intake
vbaro@yahoo.com posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am struggling with my meal and Protein protein intake. If I eat 3 healthy small portions a day, with no Protein shake. I tend to crave to snack more. If I add a protein shake I seem to gain weight, & I was told never to snack. Then if I try to drink one shake through the day, & 1 meal for dinner. I tend to be more hungry at night. What's the general rule of thumb? How many meals & shakes do you intake? Please advise.... Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App -
Week 3 Post Op Eating too much
misery4499 replied to pibirdman's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am one week post op and have lost 12 lbs after surgery. Unfortunatly I weigh myself sometimes twice a day and just found out I have gained 2 pounds back. How is this possible? I ate almost nothing and am gaining weight back! I feel like a failure and am wishing I had the Bypass done instead. Is this normal to go up and down so soon after surgery?? HELP (cry in desperation) -
Confused After Seminar
michmcpher31 replied to michmcpher31's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you guys for your responses and advice. And me too Carolina, I do not want my insides re routed or part of my stomach removed. And while complications may be rare with the bypass or sleeve, they do happen, and a lot result in death, the stats for the surgeries were like 1 in 2000 for lap band and then 1 in 500 for bypass and sleeve.... -
Confused After Seminar
☠carolinagirl☠ replied to michmcpher31's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
bc of my weight and high 60+ bmi my dr wanted me to do the bypass also but i did not want my insides cut so i stuck by my guns and got the lap band. he told me id have to help the band to make it work by eating better quality foods, smaller amounts (the band helps with this) and beginning to exercise... its not a miracle. its hard. but so worth it. and anyone who gets any WLS can gain it back by eating the cheap/easy foods. i have seen it happen and you will read it on here. do what works for YOU as you are the one who has to do it. whatever you decide, decide with all your heart and then do what you need to do to make it happen. (forget dieting or fads as we know that doesnt work). -
Please help, I'm so scared
James Marusek replied to salem244's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 16 months post op and I do not regret the decision to have gastric bypass surgery RNY. Its a struggle with managing food intake, Vitamin requirements, liquid requirements and Protein. But I have lost 110 pounds and my health has improved dramatically. It took me 6 months after surgery to reach my "happy state", when everything seemed to click. Good luck on your surgery. I guess its natural to be scared. But if you don't have the surgery and your life is shortened because of it, how will your daughter feel all alone. -
I had my pre-op appointment (for gastric bypass) at the hospital yesterday, and I have checked all the boxes to the satisfaction of my surgeon. They will now submit it to my insurance for pre-approval before setting a surgery date, and I'm quite anxious about that step. Since I'm sort of marginal in terms of BMI, I'm worried that the insurance will turn me down (although "fortunately" i also have high BP, sleep apnea and I'm pre-diabetic). Has anyone been turned down by the insurance the first time? If so, how did you resolve it? Has your doctor intervened and talked to the insurance company directly? (I have really good health insurance with Aetna.)

Sleevers in The Raliegh NC Area, I need Help!!!
time4achange posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was wondering if any sleevers in the Raleigh Nc Area, had any luck with Insurance coverage and any doctors that will fight for you. I have currently finished all my testing, and had scheduled surgery for Nov. 3. Well, yesterday I was hit with a low blow. My Doc originally said he had no probplem getting the sleeve covered and it should be ok, yesterday I was told the he was told on Friday, that my insurance Empire BC/BS of Ny, said that it was considered investigational, and will not cover the sleeve. He said he asked what would be the reasons for them to cover it, he was told if I had a condition that will not allow me to get any of the other surgeries, not just because I do not like them. The bottom line is, he said he would suggest the Gastric Bypass. My heart is broken, I was so close to the sleeve I could taste it. To top it all off, he said that alot of Blue Cross plans are starting to follow the path of medicaid and stop covering any WLS. So, I feel I need to do something quick. I need to know if anyone know another Doctor in my area that will fight for me with my insurance to be sleeved? Has anyone has the experience and actually was able to do it? -
2 questions for those closer to goal
HeatherO replied to wanabthin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am down to the last 20 myself . . . and I am still consistently losing. It is getting harder however and I find I have to "tweak" things regularly. I will stay on a particular "plan" for a week and if I see that my weight is moving in the right direction, I stay the course. When I start to stall out or don't see movement, I make changes to exercise, calorie intake, Protein intake, food choices, etc to change things up and hopefully make them move again. It seems like keeping my body "guessing" seems to be the best way to peel off the pounds at this point. I also do not keep my calorie intake the same every day to avoid a rut. I have very low calorie days (800-950) mixed with higher calorie days (but never above 1250 calories). I usually do two low, then one high but it is not always the same. At six months out, I have found that I stall at any calorie level if it is always the same. I also can stall if I eat the same foods every day (which is in my nature to do). This works for me, but of course our bodies are all different. I suffered through many plateaus in the beginning, and once I learned how to break them, I turned plateau busting into part of my regular routine . . . and it is working beautifully for now . . . who knows if it will still work the last 5-10 pounds to goal . . . or if it will work when I bypass my original goal and go for the smoking hot goal of 125??? -

What are you all doing for workouts?
armywife79 replied to armywife79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Oh that dumb port! I have such a large scar from that removal and it tool FOREVER to stop being sore! I think because it's embedded in our muscle wall it's just so hard to wrestle out after being there so long. I have a really good GI that I saw after my obstruction and he says not to worry about recurrence anytime soon so, I think your ok! Also, your a nurse (my parents are nurse pract's) so, you would know FOR SURE if you were having symptoms of a bowel adhesion. I unfortunately never even considered that and ended up in the ER vomiting and doubled over! It was the PITS! I had five incisions including the port site for bypass. They were able to go back through most of my old sites so, I only have two new small scars now. I was really close to your weight when I had the bypass and also pre diabetic but, it goes away fast after surgery and the rapid initial weight loss. The only other thing that was a concern were my liver levels but, they attribute that to the C-diff and also the super fast weight loss being processed. -
It's really happening...
redheadjo replied to redheadjo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you! I'd never heard of it either! Originally, I was going to have the gastric sleeve. However, after speaking with my surgeon, he suggested the Mini Bypass. Apparently, it's like the gastric sleeve and bypass combined somewhat.. that's not a great medical explanation, but you get the idea. lol. It's supposed to help with GERD (gastric reflux) too. Thank you! Blessings to you as well! -
When is it appropriate to consider revision?

I haven’t been through any surgeries yet, but I suggest calling your insurance to find out what their policy is on revision. Good luck! -
Lapband, VSG, Now RNY Bypass the sequel
catwoman7 replied to Sincerely.blj's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have a virgin RNY, not a revision, but I had almost no pain with this surgery. Part of me wondered at first if he actually even did the surgery... most people getting a revision do get an immediate relief from GERD (not all - but most), and additional weight loss is around 20 lbs, but I'm sure that depends on your BMI and how hard you work at losing weight. I'm sure you can find people who've lost more than that. -
Bypass was too permanent for me. My doctor explained the pros and cons of both and the one that got me was that if you gain your weight or some of it back after bypass there's nothing that can be done (surgically) to help you lose the the weight again. With the band, you can always go for an adjustment. Plus, I was scared that there would be more complications with the bypass. Good luck on your decision.

Hello everyone. I'll get straight to the point, I never wanted a bypass but i got a botched gastric sleeve surgery and was unable to eat and drink for nearly 3 months. My only option to was having a gastric bypass-it was a necessary revision surgery if I ever wanted to eat or drink again. I'm nearly three weeks out and having a very hard time. I was eating ok two weeks out then all of a sudden i started becoming nauseous and losing my appetite. I have a Gtube and a jp drain tube in-jp comes out Wednesday thank God. I'm having a hard time adjusting to the fact some things I'll never be able to eat again. It saddens me. I would really love to meet someone in the Toledo or Michigan area to buddy up with, or someone i can talk to that's been through or that's going through the same. What foods work for.you what doesn't, etc. thanks in advance

Switching from band to RNY Gastric Bypass (Pre-Op)
lmscrogg posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello everyone! I had joined this site because I was in the process of getting the lapband.... Well today I had my 'official' consult with the surgeon and he really believes that the Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass is my best option due to my weight. I had mixed emotions about it but now that I have reviewed everything and talked with my family I do agree with what he had to say. So my question is----why have you changed from the band to the Gastric Bypass? I also want to point out how glad I am that there is a forum on here for us who started out as 'bandsters' because I have made some friends on these forums already and did not want to leave :-) -
Hi I had a first appointment with my consultant who said there were some liver conditions which would make me not suitable for gastric bypass. Does anyone know what these are please? Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk

This is such a personal decision for people. Obviously everyone needs to do what makes sense in their life. Only a few people know - My husband knows, a couple of new friends I met via surgeon's office and 1 colleague from another state who I see 1 time a year at a conference. I told her because at the conference in June she told me she had bypass (which was obvious by dramatic weight loss). I am not telling anyone else. My weightloss is slow and it is just now about 25-30 lbs that people are actually commenting. I work out 5-6 times a week and keep calories low. I can honestly tell people who ask about my work out and change in eating and not feeling like I am lying. The band does not do the work, I do. Good Luck with your decision!
-
I have told my boss and a few people that I work with. There are quite a few nurses that in Critical Care where I work, who have had the gastric bypass but I will be the first with the lap band. I tried to keep it quiet at first, but once a couple of people knew, everyone seemed to know.

My original goal weight was 180 lbs. Over the past 2 years, I've revised that goal & set it at 160 lbs. I'm 7 lbs away from my original goal weight. Over the weekend, I was looking at some pictures of our recent vacation. We travelled with a group of friends. I had an 'ah-ah' moment when looking at the pictures - I looked like the rest of my friends. I don't mean I looked identical to them but I fit in with the group in terms of weight. I was no longer the biggest girl in the group. In fact, I wasn't even the bigger girl in the group. It got me to thinking about goal. I'm not sure where I'll set my end goal weight. What I do know is that I look like I hoped I would when I started this process. I have arrived! So, now, I need to start tackling maintenance. I need to educate myself & learn what I need to know to be successful in maintenance. So, what does maintenance look like for a Bandster? Do we continue to eat 1000-1200 calories a day? That doesn't seem right to me. The average intake for a sedentary female is 1600-2000 calories a day. Do we increase our caloric intake?

Hi guys, I used to stalk this forum a lot when I was pre op. Due to insurance issues I was switched from the band to the sleeve just 2 weeks before surgery. I was ok with this as I knew there was a risk that if I had the band, I might end up with the sleeve eventually, due to complications. I don't have any experience with the band, as I didn't end up getting it, and am not trying to swing people over to the sleeve. I am posting on here to let you know that if circumstances change, if complications occur, if you are one of the ones that the band just isn't working for, the sleeve is not that bad and you can still have great results. I'm only posting this because the advice I got from here was invaluable when I was pre op and making my decision. I wanted to return the favour somehow. The band is a great tool, and for some, a great first step. If you find yourself having to take the 2nd step of revision to the sleeve, you have not failed and you can still expect great success. Good luck on your weight loss journey. 210lb Scars - 2 mo. post op.bmp 125lb. Surgery was on 13 August 2012.
