Can I really do this?
U_go_gurl68 replied to GonBhealthy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Jackie H, I think it all depends on the patient. Some surgeons want you to do the liquid diet to shrink your liver to decrease the risk of injury during surgery. Your stomach sits below your liver and if it is enlarged it increases the risk for injury to surrounding tissues and makes placement of the band harder. If on the day of your surgery, after your surgeon gets in, your liver is enlarged, most will reschedule and not perform the surgery. This is what I have heard anyway. I didn't do a full two week liquid diet either because my surgery kept getting rescheduled due to scheduling conflicts so I only did it two days before and all went fine. -

erikaloftin replied to erikaloftin's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well my info session was in the beginning of November, so its been longer than 3 months. But since I actually was accepted into the program, it will be 3. -
Tony - I was banded two weeks ago, and found SO much comfort, information and help on this site; just before surgery, and since. I contemplated WLS for close to a year before actually moving forward. The two I looked closely at was the gastric bypass and the lap band. I teeter tottered back & forth between the two for a long time. I was scheduled for the bypass, then freaked out about 10 days prior. In between that and my decision to go with the band (plus plication), I gave dieting one more good try. That was about a two week period, and I managed to gain three more pounds. Congrats on your decision! I'm on my path, and soon you will be, too. It's a lot of work, but even this early on, I'm finding my new "tool" is quickly becoming my new best friend

Concerns about getting the Sleeve
RareGold3000 replied to luckystarr23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello and welcome......I second guessed it as well during the 4 months of required appts and such, but I realized that I didn't want to keep gaining weight and I wanted to get back to being healthy again. I think we are all afraid of failure since we've failed at so many diets throughout our life. This surgery is the first step to better health and weight loss for sure, but we have to continue to take care of ourselves forever with what we eat and get exercise in, it's a life style change. Each surgeon and nutritionist have different plans. I take a Multivitamin and Calcium citrate supplements and B12, but my surgeon says since it's the sleeve I won't be taking these forever it's just due to the 'less' amt of calories I am getting during weight loss. And actually it can't hurt anyway to take a multivitamin and calcium with the maintenance phase forever. I didn't need Iron supplements. Since sleeve patients have normal absorption it's not necessary to forever be on supplements as with your Roux-en-Y patients. But, again check with your surgeon and nutritionist. I'm only giving you the advice that my surgeon's office tells me. Of course at the beginning after surgery I only consumed maybe 200-400 calories a day, but that eventually gets more and more. I'm now at 9 months post op and consume anywhere from 800-1000 calories on any given day. My surgeon says that at a year out I should be right around 1200 calories a day. I go to the gym 5 days a week with 50 min of cardio each day and then add 3 days of strength training as well, gym days I eat more but then again I'm making up for the deficit of what I'm burning, but still those days total minus the calories burned is only around 800-1000. I hope this helps some? Best of luck with your decision and with your journey, I'm sure you'll make the best decision for you. Karen -

So many appointments.... Is this normal?
brittanykins replied to MandaPanda's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It took me 8 months to get through all of my required pre-op appointments. I had 3 months supervised diet with a nutritionist, upper GI, bloodwork (and subsequent month on meds for h pylori), a physical and pap with my pcp, and a psych eval (which was not enjoyable). After all of that, I finally thought I was finished until the surgeon randomly tells me months after my consultation appointment that I also need lung and heart clearance. So I ended up also needing an EKG stress test, and breathing test. (Four more appointments) I'm finally done and scheduled for my surgery and final pre-op visit with the surgeon 9 months after my initial consultation. -
It's not truly the surgery that causes the hair loss. No amount of Protein, Vitamins, fluids, magic pills will guarantee you won't lose hair. I have not met one sleeve patient that didn't endure some sort of big "shedding" some lasts longer than others. Here's other threads that discuss the topic of hair loss http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/9817-the-hair-diaries/page__p__85627__hl__+hair++diaries__fromsearch__1#entry85627 http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/9393-hair-today-hair-tomarrow/page__p__83200__hl__+hair++loss__fromsearch__1#entry83200 The 2nd topic link I posted has actual medical articles and explanations to why we experience hair loss. Yes, part of it is related to the drastic dietary change, and lack of protein in the beginning, but there are patients that got in their required protein grams plus and they lost hair longer and more than I did and I didn't get in my protein until I was 6 weeks out. I even lost hair after my gallbladder surgery in February 8 months post sleeve, and my hair had finally stopped falling out 2 months prior.

July/Aug 2010 Banders!?
Nicole74 replied to Nicole74's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well when I hit a stand still its for a few weeks and I start picking up my workout routine, than I have to turn back to the band rules...protein first, chew, chew chew, eat small bites and drink LOTS of water...once I do that for a week or so the scale normally moves again...my weight loss stands still for a few weeks than I may lose 2-3lbs and start the whole cycle again...its really starting to slow down now though ...so I have to work harder and it feels like as time goes on I sway away from the band rules more and more so I have to re focus....your doing a great job....glad you have such a great practice..Im debating on if I should get another fill or not, I have an appt next week. part of me thinks I could use just a little more but than Im scared of being too tight and miserable! its harder than I thought to find just that right spot..I have a feeling I may have to get overfilled in order to really know where I need to be! Good luck! -
How long are you staying satisfied. You should be able to stay satisfied for 3 to 4 hours. It's not going to help head hunger, that's psychological and you'll have to deal with that separately. As for the feeling in your chest, could be too big a bite, not chewing well or eating too fast and not allowing your pouch to empty properly before putting more in.

I had my first fill on 11/09 and I have 4cc in my 10cc band. I'm not hungry until around 12:30 but when I do eat I can have a more than a cup, but still small portions, probably 2 cups. I'm eating slow and if I do eat too fast I feel like I'm going to get stuck ( pain in chest almost like heartburn) so I stop. Is this my "green zone"? Or am I supposed to be eating less than a cup in my green zone. Just trying to make sure I'm doing this right. I've last 3 more lbs since 11/09, yay!

Is Something Wrong WIth me?
Fairyluver75 replied to Big Wojo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It definitely could be the fat content or eating too fast. During this time you're still healing so you have to remember to take it easy, eat slow. I would get sick as well. Eat jell-o, broths, clear stuff for now and then revisit the creamy stuff like yogurt and cream soups. Eat sugar free Popsicles those will help with dehydration. Some days it was all I could keep down. If it doesn't get better by next week, I would contact your doctor. -
Im 2 weeks post op and I'm feeling this sharp pain on my left side right underneath my biggest scar. Every time I sneeze or cough it hurts more and more. There's certain positions in which it doesn't hurt, and there's some in which hurts more. Does anyone relate? Or is it just me and I should go to the doctor. Please help!

I am 3 weeks our and still have pain on right side where biggest incision is. When I got out of recovery the area was sunken in. Surgeon said it was from the internal sitches and from scarring from gall bladder surgery I had in February. The pain is not as intense now but still hurts when getting up and twisting. Also can't walk very far without pain.

Bad day all around following hectic weekend. Very tired this am. Did not take concerta...Also note to self. Been thinking about TT and when to have it. Did I self sabotage myself today. Had 2 icecream cones, little debbie oatmeal pie....4 little tiny cookies, swig of choc milk...just like old days. Haven't done this in months. I have to wonder why. I have been plateaued for a week or two. HMMMMMMM Terrible Golf ball pain after swigging spaghetti with butter left over in daughters plate. PB'd three or four times. UGH Start over tomorrow. :think :nanahump:

I think it depends on your insurance. After I had my consult with my surgeon, I then met with their financial person and she told me that my insurance requires 6 months of nutrition visits. I did that, they submitted the paperwork and I was scheduled for surgery 2 weeks after the approval came in.

Women on BCP after surgery
Cervidae replied to mmorris4's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I actually stall out when I am off my birth control for whatever reason. Most people I've met actually have better results while on birth control. Then again, I and many of these women have PCOS just like @@SweetPotato so it may be different for you if you do not have any hormone issues. -
Maybe it's me but I find this pre-op just a little overwhelming and more involved then I thought. Keeping track of protein shakes - how many how often, grams of protein in everything plus adding the protein powder grams, then in my case bloodsugars 2-3 times a day and trying not to screw that up. My doc gave me sample menus for stage 3 and 4 . Why cant someone make a preop sample menu, I guess cause everyoones is so different. Feel like I need to keep a running journal of my day.

having trouble finding someone like me
BlueTattoo replied to becca4uf's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hun you are singing the same toon as i am. I wasn't always this way but it's been hell trying to get it off!. I've got a 2 year old and a 3 year old. I like you, gained 100lbs with first pregancy , and 20 with my second. 3 months after i had my daughter i was preggers again... My body wasn't able to "bounce back" like most peoples do. I'm still waiting on word from my doc atm. I dont think i'll hear from him til march. But who's your main insurance. Different people with different insruances have to go through different things. I myself have BCBSOK, -BlueChoice, i called ahead of my doctor and spoke with them before i even made my doctors appointment. They said i would be approved i just had to find a doctor in the area that was in the network with my insurance... i was like a yo yo through school due to being on ritlin during the school year and then being taken off of it during the summer. I would lose weight in the school year and then gain it when i was off . I was never "super skinny" but i had a lil meat in all the right places. Least that 's what i like to think but ever since i got married my ex husband used to say you are losing too much weight, i want more weight on u.... Secretly i think he was trying to trap me so that no one else would want me but that's a whole different story and now i'm getting sidetracked LOL. In other post below you will find great information about the procedures, doctors, hospitals and insurances. We're all here for you and good luck hun! *hugs*
