    Irregular period

I know this is an old thread, but I’m so happy to have found it and be able to see I’m not alone. I’ve been spotting every two weeks for the last two months. I had bypass on May 15th and had to stop taking bc. I started back up two months later and was regular, then all of a sudden I started getting the cramps and cravings with little to no spotting. But now it’s like a full blown slaughter going on. Will this regulate?

    Stricture repair

Hello. I had the gastric sleeve in 2014. I started having severe acid reflux to the point I was waking up choking in my sleep. Found out my stomach was twisted. I had the gastric bypass Nov 2019 to correct the problem. After a few months I couldn't keep any food down and found out I had a stricture. Tried the endoscopy to try to open it up but the scar tissue was too bad. Having surgery tomorrow to see if he can remove the scar tissue. If not, then he will have to reroute my intestines to another part of my stomach. I'm so disappointed in all that has happened and scared because of all the surgery being done to my stomach. I keep having this nightmare of walking around with a colostomy bag because of damage. I'm going to stay positive but wanted to know if anyone had to have surgery again after a stricture?

3 weeks post op sleeve gastrectomy

It may seem judgmental but we don’t want you repeating some of our mistakes. I can answer this from both a VSG and an RNY standpoint. High sugar so soon out from surgery is a BAD idea. For example, a couple weeks ago I was 2 months post RNY revision (for GERD) and had 4 bites of a chocolate frosted donut for my daughter’s birthday. To say I felt like I was dying is an understatement. If you don’t want to be spewing from both ends while it feels like you’re running a marathon, I would suggest a different choice. However, if you are craving chocolate I’d suggest sugar free chocolate pudding made with skim milk and extra unflavored protein powder. It’s better for you than an actual piece of sugar filled chocolate and you may find you don’t enjoy the taste of chocolate anymore anyway.

    Pre-op

I was 62 when I had gastric bypass. I followed my plan as prescribed to me. I tried not to compare myself to others that seemed to be losing faster than I was. I wasn't able to do much exercise because I had so much pain from an arthritic hip that has since been replaced. I was on 2 BP meds and prediabetic. Except for the pain I had when I woke up in the recovery room I can honestly say I never had any pain from this surgery. I did have nerve blocks on both sides though and walked early and a lot!. This was truly one of my best decisions! My walks are now 5 miles, pain free. My BP is normal and the only meds I take are my vitamins, calcium and extra iron. I made a complete lifestyle change, including moving to a more "walkable" community and breaking my addiction to sugar, diet coke and unhealthy foods.

    Pre-op

I was 62 when I had bypass, and it was the best decision I ever made. I have my life back!!!!!! With no pain now in the hips, knees and back. All my co-morbidities have resolved. I can hike, bike, ride my horse, and get down (and up) on the floor with my grandkids. I've done a triathlon and a 50 mile bike race. Woo hoo! Who would have thought it even possible? My next goals are a rim-to-rim Grand Canyon hike and ultimately to finish the 830 mile Arizona Trail. I think being older gives a deeper perspective that this is the last chance. We've tried everything else for literally decades, and there are no more options. And there are no more games. It is this or nothing. We are all in or all out. We don't worry as much about hair loss or saggy skin or looking great in a bikini - it is about health and quality of life. We are also past menopause, and so don't have to worry as much about hormone fluctuations or about slowing metabolism - it's already slowed for us and things can only get better, right? I am seizing every day with joy and gratitude that I am now able to live again, because what I was doing before was just slowly dying. Best wishes to you! You have every chance to be successful at this, regardless of age.
  7. I had an ESG but it was NOT a revision to a VSG. In almost 4 months, I have lost 40 pounds with a starting bmi of 30.4. It was done in Cary, NC by Dr. Chris McGowan. Cost: 10k. I recommend talking with him or check out the website to get more info. His practice name is True You weight loss at (919) 696-1109.
  8. Has anyone had revision to a surgical Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy with a non-surgical Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty? If so, what was your experience like? Where did you have it done? Who was your doctor? Cost? Thanks!
  9. Question for any one who had surgery and had hyperthyroidism (HYPER (the one where people who have it are usually skin just apparently not me) not HYPO). Did the surgery mess up your TSH levels? Before the surgery we got my levels to normal and was able to come off the meds. Was off them for 2 years and no issue. Then I had my bypass in March 2020. Levels were just checked and my TSH was 0.005..... so SUPER low

    Anyone sleeve to bypass?

@Christina760 - He said I’ll lose less than I would have if I’d had bypass first, but expects that I’ll likely lose about 60 lbs, which is right in the 69-65% range for me. I’ll still be overweight by the BMI tables, but I’ll be much better off than I am now. I’d love to lose more, but I’m not getting my hopes up since this isn’t my first surgery.
  11. Yes I couldn't agree more, and if you focus and get it done now, it will be out of your way. You will be on track to a new you. My surgery is booked Oct. 26 and I start my pre-op in a week. Also good news is I successfully defended my PhD and it is out of the way for now (revisions I will do after). I feel its time. You will get through this. Do you have a date set?

    Anyone sleeve to bypass?

And anything to dry will get stuck too. I can't eat chicken right now. I had salmon and I was fine but once I reheated it, it got stuck. I'm struggling with what to eat now because I'm scared of food getting stuck. I have been having chicken noodle soup and quiche because ive been able to keep them down although i either ate too much or two fast because the soup got stuck. So far I've lost 30 lbs. I can't even be excited because I'm miserable. A lot of people who have had the bypass and have had complications still say they don't regret it and they would do it again. I just think I wasn't ready for it. I wasn't in the right place thinking wise. But everyone's experience is different.

    Anyone sleeve to bypass?

@Latanya oh okay yes I gained back most but not all. I hear we have to chew a lot and it can get stuck. Hmmm. How much have you lost since your bypass?

    Anyone sleeve to bypass?

I had the sleeve in 2012 and just had the revision to bypass July 27th of this year. I lost 130 lbs on the sleeve. The only problem I had with it was the heartburn. I kept the weight off for 4 years but due to some negative changes in my life all at once I gained all of it back. I have to say I found the sleeve to be a much easier process than the bypass. The sleeve I had no negative reactions to any food. I could eat whatever I wanted but in moderation and the weight came off easily. With the bypass I'm having trouble eating. Certain foods get stuck in my chest which makes me have to throw it up. So far its been a very unpleasant experience but I hope as time goes on it will get better and I'll be able to eat more variety.

    New into the journey

I had the Loop Duodenal Switch (also called SIPS). I originally was also looking into gastric sleeve, but as you can see when I started my journey I was nearly 400 pounds and my surgeon told me that the statistical average of gastric sleeve would not be enough to lose the amount of weight I wanted to lose and same for the gastric bypass. I was very much on the fence but eventually I chose the surgery anyway due to the surgeons experience and I figured he knew what he was talking about. Vitamin wise you do take more than the average WLS, but not that much more. I process iron REALLY well so I do a switch on my vitamins where 1 day I take 1 multivitamin with iron and 2 multivitamins without iron and then the next day it switches and I take 2 multi's with iron and 1 without. I also take 2 Calcium Citrate a day (because I process Calcium really well as well). In my 6 month labs I showed to have a minor Vitamin A deficiency so I take 1 dropper of liquid Vitamin A a day as well. I'll find out how that worked out in two weeks since I just did my 9 month labs today and my 9 month check up is on the 13th. I was 321 pounds on my surgery day and this morning I weighed in at 221 so I've lost 100 pounds in 8 months (and 1 week). Which, honestly, I'm very proud of. I don't have bad body odor, if that's your concern. It's more your bowel movements... stink. REALLY bad! And avoid anything with excess sugar alcohol because it may give you gas (like it does to me) and it's smells terrible. There are not as many people who've had the DS or Loop DS, but I've noticed it's been gaining slightly more popularity lately so there are quite a few people on this site that you can ask for advice from who've had the surgery. If you have any questions for me feel free to ask and I'll try my best to answer them.
  17. When I started my pre-op diet I stopped my metformin (PCP approved). Post-op I stopped one of my blood pressure meds (surgeon instructions). About one month post-op I stopped my nexium (surgeon instructions). I had GERD for years, so had bypass rather than sleeve. I am going to discuss stopping cholesterol medication at this point as my labs look great, and a recheck in a few months will show if I still need it. I figure I will always be on one blood pressure med, as I started it almost 20 years ago when I was 165 pounds and fit. I have a follow up today with surgeon’s office to review my first post-op labs. I have already reviewed them so I know I am no longer diabetic, and my cholesterol is perfect. We will see if I need any adjustments to my vitamins or diet. I have some “anomaly’s” in my iron and protein panels. Not sure how the surgeon’s office will interpret them. 🤷‍♀️

    ParkWest Dr Williams

Had my daughter at Parkwest in TN. However, I am in the same situation. I originally wanted bypass or DS but Dr pushed for sleeve, now I'm getting DS. Based on having the sleeve the best revision is the DS from my understanding. When is your revision scheduled?

    Help

I had a sleeve at 54 years old, 10 years ago. I am now 64 !! BEST THING I EVER DID !!! I did not do it for vanity or to look better or to wear a smaller size. I did it for my health and to live longer, and be able to be more active. I started my journey at 320 plus pounds. I had surgery at about 300 pounds. I now weigh 174. No, I did not get to my doctor's initial goal, but he later told me he never expected me to get there either. At my age adjusted BMI I am considered overweight. I started 10 years ago wearing size 28 plus. I now wear petite 16 or a regular 14. But I like the fit of a petite 16 better. I have saggy baggy skin, and my hair is thinner than it was, but who knows if that is my age and or the hysterectomy or the weight loss. I am happy, healthy and active. I work full time, take care of my home, raise chickens for organic eggs, I have an organic vegetable garden. I walk, I take care of my chickens, muck out the coops, and swim when the weather is nice and the pool is warm. I do more than most of my age group, and I do not regret having weight loss surgery for even a second. My best advice is to research well. I chose a sleeve because I have asthma and end up on oral steroids at least yearly. I needed to be able to take certain medications, and a bypass would not have allowed me to do that. My pulmonologist recommended that I have whatever surgery would allow me to treat my lung disease as recommended. Again, for me, I am happy !!!

    Hiatal hernia

Had mine repaired at the time of my bypass surgery. No problems and no, it did not make my recovery any more difficult.
  21. Wondering if anyone else had a hiatal hernia that was either repaired or was not during their gastric bypass procedure. I’ll be having mine repaired when my surgery takes place. If you have experienced this, did it make recovery any more difficult?

Ms.sss you always manage to look like a model no matter what you're wearing, but I do love how you look in dresses! I agree with you about the fitted pants, but I've been stuck at home for the most part for the last 5 weeks! My 48 year old husband had to have emergency open heart bypass, after surgeon cut his aorta while putting in a stent!!! Had to take off work while he is recuperating. I'm battling depression and boredom by crazy online shopping therapy.😉 So, I thought I'd model my sparklers while in my size large joggers, that are now not even fit for lounge wear! 😂 Promise, I'll post pics when I actually wear them out. For now, I think I'll stick to modeling my new shoes as they arrive.
