  1. Not everyone develops reflux issues after sleeve - it's something like 30%, and for most it can be managed medically (i.e., with PPI's). There are some who have it pretty severely so their only option is revision, although again, for most, it can be managed in other ways. I had reflux before surgery and went with the RNY because I figured I'd end up being one of the 30%, and I didn't want to take the risk. But others take it - and they end up doing fine. It's really kind of a crap shoot. I think a lot of surgeons prefer the sleeve because it's a much simpler surgery, so they're probably more likely to recommend that one. Luckily, mine did recommend RNY for me, although he said he'd be glad to do either. He's also been doing these surgeries for 30+ years, so he's done a ton of RNY's. I think some of the younger ones have most of their experience with sleeve since that's been the popular of the two surgeries for the last 10 years or so.

    Two-year hiatus from this site

I only stayed a few months after my first WLS years ago but I had to get a bypass revision for gerd almost 2 years ago and have stayed around since. People back then were always arguing and fighting, but I don't see much of that now at all. Much more calm and informative threads the last 2 years compared to before. Alex must've cleaned things up.

    Two-year hiatus from this site

I was here over ten years ago during my lapband journey… now I’m back since I’m having revision to bypass. I plan on sticking around this time!
  4. I have a date of June 17 for a Lap Band Revision to a Sleeve with Dr Alvarez at EndoBariatics. 3 weeks from today!

    Happy with your dietician?

I have had no support. Got banded Jan of 22. Since then I have only met with my dietitian once and that was upon request. I’m so confused as to what to eat. I just had revision surgery last week. I had a port leak. And now I’m trying to figure out what I’m supposed to be doing. That’s why I just got this app. Any advice?

    Gastric Sleeve to SADI-S

The first thing you need to do is call your insurance company and determine your bariatric benefits and ask for them to be sent to you in writing. At the same time, ask for their policy paper on bariatric surgery. Most insurance companies have the requirements written in detail. Ask for them to be sent to you in writing as well. This policy paper should detail the requirements to be met for a revision. As far as the SADI-S, it is what my doctor recommended. Like you describe what “should” happen, my doctor listened to all of my issues, and explained all the procedures and recommended the SADI. Going in, I was thinking just a sleeve, but with my various metabolic issues the SADI made more sense. If you stay with your current doctor, demand that he review the pros and cons of each revision as it relates to your specific issues. You will also find a lot of information here in this forum from others who have gone through each procedure. Read, read, read! Good luck to you! Keep us posted on your progress.

    Gastric Sleeve to SADI-S

Not sure what to say about how to get your insurance to cover a revision, but if you're having reflux problems then maybe have Bypass instead. I had the Sadi-S myself, and have lucked out that my EOE didn't cause the acid issues to get worse (I have acid issues at night due to EOE a.k.a Eosinophilic Esophagitis). If you do get the Sadi-S here's some advice... 1. don't go too long without something in your stomach even if it's applesauce or fruit, etc. because if I wait to long inbetween eating my bowels decide to empty everything in them. (TMI, but you should know so you can avoid it happening to you) 2. Always take a probiotic every day because it helps with keeping you regular 3. I don't know if it's a common thing for Sadi-S or other surgeries or if it's just me... but I haven't been able to throw up since my surgery... 3 years ago (and yes, I've been sick and dry heaved for hours, but couldn't throw up). 4. having any WLS with a malabsorption factor gives you a 3% chance of developing a wheat allergy or Celiac's (I got the wheat allergy because my luck is ****). And, 5. I don't know if it's just a DS or Sadi-S thing, but there is a chance after surgery that you will vomit old blood (if this counts as vomiting then this is the only time I've thrown up since surgery. It happened three or four times while I was in the hospital after surgery. They didn't warn me and it scared the **** out of me). Anyway, yeah... I'm happy with my surgery choice, but if I'd had another chance I think I'd have gone for the original DS since it has slightly better weight loss results. I had the normal gain back you get going into your third year and straddle between 188-193 which I've been for 9 months. Also, any time you have surgery, ANY surgery, you risk the chance of health problems popping up that you would have got a little later in life. I developed Mast Cell Activation Syndrome after my WLS and it's been a b***h to deal with. I mean, technically the doctor told me she thinks I probably already had the beginnings of it before the surgery and the surgery itself just... made it progress to a more severe case (apparently they noticed a trend in people with EOE developing MCAS so it was pretty much going to happen anyway). But still. Health issues can pop up after surgery. So just be aware of it. Hopefully everything goes well for you and sorry for the word vomit.
  8. Hi folx, My highest weight was 383 lbs in November 2020. I have Sleep Apnea, Hypertension (Managed Well on Meds), Acid Reflux, Mild Hiatal Hernia, and Anomalous Right Coronary Artery. When I had my sleeve surgery in November 2020, my BMI was 50.1. I was on a steady decline post op. I exercise, and somewhat maintain diet. I don’t overeat, but I am also not as religious as immediately following surgery. I have a new insurance provider because of a new job and would like to consider revision to a SADI-S since the gastric sleeve part is already done. And, it’s been shown to have the best long term outcomes. I have bariatric benefits, but I would like to know what I need to do to get my insurance to cover a revision. Also, after speaking to some medical professionals, I learned that with a BMI of 50.1, I probably should have had DS or Bypass to begin with. Why didn’t my doctor talk to me more about other options. I mean I had a great Doc. Best by far. But would have liked to had some more conversations. I know that DS won’t fix the reflux, but I think it could help address the other things. Thoughts?

3 Days Post Op - Just Documenting My Journey

Yes, overdid it on the walking for sure. Lesson learned. Thanks for what to expect on the poop. This is new to me, since I'm used to the opposite (5-7 times a day). I guess I'll go buy some miralax, because I've read here about the constipation and obstructions. I was surprised at first to when the Dr recommended the VSG and not RNY. I like to read, read, read, and I thought the bypass was going to be the option. The Dr said the sleeve can make GERD worse, and make people who didn't have GERD get GERD, but he said it's 10-20%, not 50/50 or worse odds. I even had Barrett's Esophagus that resolved a couple of years ago after years of PPI meds. I still consulted with my gastroenterologist prior to surgery. In fact I had an EGD in March because i was having stricture. He said even as I was dropping the rest of my meds (during weight loss) I would likely have to remain on the 40mg omeprazole for the rest of my life. I was already planning on that, so I made the decision to try the sleeve with my eyes wide open that I might need a revision. The first night I had a little reflux when I got in bed, but haven't had any issues since. I am still taking my PPI. Thanks for the response!
  10. 8000 steps is pretty high for being just a few days out of surgery. Your body needs to rest and heal. It's been several years since I had surgery, but I think I mostly walked around my house a little the first three or four days, then did a jaunt around the block every day for a few days after that. It's good to be up and moving, but don't push yourself too much - again, your body needs to heal. as far as poop, it often takes a good week for the first one (there's not much in there yet), and the first one tends to be a doozy. A lot of us start taking stool softeners a couple of days ahead of it to prepare for it. After that, a minority of people experience occasional diarrhea, but most experience constipation, often chronic (it's due to the high protein diet plus the iron and calcium (if you're taking those). I still take a capful of Miralax every morning to keep on top of it. watch out for reflux - I'm a little surprised your surgeon recommended VSG since that's been known to make GERD worse, but that's not the case for everyone. But just keep tabs on it and manage it if it doesn't resolve or gets worse (a minority get it so badly they end up getting a revision to RNY, but for most, it can be managed with PPIs). You just don't want that to get out of control - but again, you may not have issues with it. Some people have said theirs even got better after surgery, so you never know.. I haven't seen many posts about hiccups, so I don't know how common that is, but it doesn't surprise my since your stomach's been sliced and diced. And the painful transitions (when you go from lying down to standing up, or whatever) - yep, that's very common. That's really the only time I had pain. It felt like I'd just done about 1000 crunches. that went away after a week or so, I think. sounds like things are going well over all, though. Welcome to the losers' bench!

    SLIMES - WHAT TO DO

I had my revision to bypass in August 2022 as well. I still get the foamies/slimes occasionally. It's strange but with the VSG I had experience dumping (fast heartrate, sweating, feeling clammy, malaise...Etc. but with the RNY, I experience foamies but no dumping. The only way I can stop the foamies is first, I keep blowing my nose when I first notice it, so no more will build up, then if that doesn't stop it, I use one of those tongue cleaners and rub the back of my tongue a few times, makes me cough and all the slime comes out. I remember in the beginning they would last for hours and hours. Now it's usually till I can clear it once. Last time I had it was after eating at a restaurant, on the way home in the car. I didn't have my tongue cleaner but used a chopstick from my takeout bag and an extra plastic bag. Eww. lol
  12. Hey there, I’m still new to this too. I’m waiting for insurance approval. I’m not good at waiting. Lol I love this group because I have watched other’s journeys and have gotten some great information. I’ve been kinda quite in the back ground. My name is Teresa, I’m 56 from Kingsland Ga. I’m having a revision from the lapband to the sleeve.
  13. In my early 30s (~220s lbs.), I knew I was in big trouble. Serious comorbities. Monthly ER visits. I was a thin child, a thin teenager but after a horrible thing happened to me, like many others, my weight became my shield, until it didn't... No diets, pills, injections worked. I didn't have the funds nor insurance then but as soon as it was available, I went for it. That's why I am so thankful for the opportunity to have had it. So many people could only dream of it as it is expensive, especially back then. I was in my 40s with lots of comorbities, a little over 300 lbs when I finally got the chance. I'm in my 60s now. I am healthier now than in my 20s. I have had a revision due to a slipped band, then another due to gerd but I never complained about it, as I am so gratefulful I had the chance. Because if it, I haven't been anywhere near 300 lbs nor have I had serious comorbities for 15 years.
  14. Little bit about me... Had the lap band in spring 2007 after hitting a high of 450... dropped down in to the 320s... stalled, had some different life issues cause some emotional issue... needless to say I bounced back up nearer to the 380s at one point. Settled in around 360 and decided to go get a revision to DS... which was Friday. Weight at surgery was right about 360. Stepped on my home scale this morning... 338.4. It's a lot in a short time. I feel like a million bucks, though. I've taken minimal painkillers other than tylenol in the last couple days. Woke up with some pain in the center of my back and couldn't really get comfortable after that... so I took one of my happy pills this morning at 8. I've done a good job staying hydrated, slightly under protein target but working on it. I've been able to move around the house (up and down stairs as well) without much issue. All the internal plumbing is working. Follow-up is tomorrow morning with the surgeon. Should I be waiting for the other shoe to drop? Am I doing *too* well to expect this will continue? Is reality going to kick my butt in the next few days?
  15. I've known several people who've had adjustments or revisions, and the weight always come off much slower the second time around. It'll come off again if you really work at it, but yea - it's usually a long, slow process...

May 24 for my revision from sleeve to RNY.
  17. I know what you’ve been going through has been absolutely awful but it did lead to them finding the cancer. Thank gracious it was picked up so early & you won’t need more aggressive treatment. Have you tried using resistance bands or other less strenuous exercise? Remember exercise only contributes to about 10% of the weight you are to lose. I didn’t exercise through my weight loss & all I do now are stretches (on the floor) & a few resistance exercises. I do short bursts of 5 or so minutes about 4 times a day. My arms are nicely toned & I see a little muscle definition in my knees & thighs which is what I wanted & my back doesn’t cause me as many issues. Actually have had to drop my sit ups (the most strenuous thing I did) because I had a fairly significant retinal bleed in my ‘better’ eye & was ordered not to by my specialist. (Not completely disappointed because I really hated them. 😁) Praying the end is in sight for you & you’ll be cleared for your revision soon.
  18. Got my results from the colonoscopy. What they removed was 2 adenomas. 1 medium and 1 large. Stage 1 cancer. No further treatment needed since there was no chance for it to spread since it was caught and removed so early. Need to be watched closely with more frequent colonoscopies to make sure it doesn't come back. I also have to have a small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) test done in the next week or so. All my stomach polyps came back pre-cancerous but benign. Now I have to have a large uterine fibroid removed and tested and see a colorectal specialist for 2 other...things...removed. Then another endoscopy to check my stomach to see if polyps have come back. After that, if none have, I should be cleared for the revision. If they have, then I need to have them removed and tested and see what's next. So I still have AT LEAST another 3 months of this crap before I can even remotely look at the revision. And that's still a huge maybe at this point. My weight loss has completely stopped, I can barely work out (I can only do 30-45 min tow to three times per week instead of 1 1/2 - 2 hours 5 days per week...no weights, no core or strength training...just the treadmill if I go easy and the bike), and my diet is a mess because I still (even on 80mg of Nexium per day) get break through GERD and excruciating pain in my colon area that we're still investigating, so I can kinda sorta stick to my diet, but on really bad days I eat whatever will stay down and not hurt (like mashed potatoes, beans, bread, etc). I try to be religious with my diet when I'm having good or even ok days. But I'm literally about to lose my mind over here. I just want the GERD and polyps to STOP. I want the pain to stop. I want to get back on my diet PROPERLY. I want to really work out again. I miss my life the way it was before. Fun times over here, lemme tell ya.... 😵‍🙄

Sleeve to Bypass due to REGAIN

I read an article that stated that revisions mainly work for those that the original sleeve was done incorrectly. Which is why many surgeons warn their patient that they will likely only lose about 40 lbs. While that may be true, you have a wonderful tool to help you continue to get healthy, and if you stay within the guidelines, for at least 80% of the time, your weight WILL come off. Keep hydrated, don't drink till at least 30 min later, protein first, eat healthy, keep in touch with your team during stalls.

Sleeve to Bypass due to REGAIN

Update- I had my revision from VSG to bypass on 2/7. As of today I’ve lost 33 pounds. I lost 13 prior to surgery so it is definitely coming off much slower this time. I seem to stall out for a couple of weeks at a time and then lose. This surgery was the hardest thing I’ve ever done and I’m worried this is all I will lose. I have a torn meniscus in my knee and really need this weight off. Of course it is affecting me working out. Going for a gel shot for it today.

Sleeve to Bypass due to REGAIN

I too am having revision surgery on 05/30 because I regained 200 lbs. yes, 200! It worked for me until it didn't and it seemed I gained weight no matter what or how little I ate so its time to do something different. I've had an endoscopy so we know what went wrong where with the surgery as a tool and I have had 14 years (12 as weight gaining) to examine my role in the failure of myself and my tool. I am determined not to make the same mistakes that I can control this time around. I am 53 and don't want to go into old age as a fat woman with a bad knee limited in how i live my life.
  22. Hi guys, For those who have had the mgb, how many ounces should we eat post op? I'm just planning everything for my op in August, I'm having a sleeve to mgb revision so want to make sure I get everything right this time around

    May 2023 surgeries

Hi everyone, Remember we are all beautiful and one of a kind works of art the Lord has created. Just like diamonds, some were laying out easy and others required a lot of sweat and tears. I think you might be onto something CarolineLittle, and the type of surgery makes a difference. Oh joy (sarcasm dripping from my tongue). I am having a band revision to RNY bypass, plus I am hoping they repair my hiatal hernia too. I will pray for you all. By the way I am getting the feeling my hubby will try to over encourage my drinking.
