    Documenting your journey

    I took measurements the night before surgery. I wish I would have taken pictures monthly like other people, only because I think it would be pretty cool to look back on. I have only measured myself 1 other time since surgery and it was like 3/4 months out. I will probably measure again at my 1 yr mark. I weigh myself on Mondays (surgery day). I don't keep a journal or log or anything of that nature. I only use an APP to track my food and progress as far as weight. Good luck to you!

    Grazing, is this normal?

    Another good post that makes me think and wonder whether I graze or eat mini meals (or snacks) lol. I don't eat on schedule and there are days I am not hungry till 3 pm so I don't eat at all and just drink coffee and other days I begin at 10 am. I am all over the place when it starts but the time in between is naturally steady I guess, like 2 to 3 hours.
  3. I do not have a sweet tooth per se but I recently discovered That's it Dark Chocolate Banana truffles. I eat 2 to 3 pieces for a snack. It really tastes good to me, not terribly sweet but not bitter because the banana is naturally sweet and are filling.

    This made me think about grazing vs snacks vs small meals. Now I think I may be doing regular small snacks a day or 6 small meals vs 3 large meals. In the end it's like 4 to 6x a day. It just feels like "grazing" because I eat more often than pre WLS. Makes me wonder.

    Hi, my date is March 6th! I am cutting out carbs, sugar and caffeine this week. Starting liquid diet next week. Which surgery are you having? I am going with the bypass.
  7. And that is the truth! If you don't prepare yourself in your mind it will never,ever work... you already have to know you can't have 3rds at every meal and that there are more than 3 a day for some. Or that you may not have that issue but that you are going to have to start some walking. May be something else... but mind comes first. The rest for me has been easy! I admit I'm very early on in this. 2 weeks out but pre-op and so far a snap. Lost 12 lbs in 2 weeks. Makes long for when I can get some food to get more strength so I can burn a hole in the sidewalk.... Sent from my SM-S901U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Grazing, is this normal?

    This is really about developing a way of eating that works for you. It’s only wrong if it doesn’t work. I don’t graze as such but I snack - usually 3 or 4 a day. I have specific range of things I eat at specific times - yep very routine & yep that anal. I don’t mindlessly snack. The snacks meet specific needs I have for protein, fibre, etc. My snacks don’t exceed my daily calories but actually help me meet my caloric & higher protein needs. I don’t track. Never had to & have always just done random checks about especially with new foods & to ensure I’m not over/under estimating or becoming complacent. I prep most of what I eat myself from scratch so I have a lot of control over what I eat. I snack on multigrain crackers & liverwurst, cheese, high protein yoghurt, nuts, protein bar. Occasionally I’ll snack on fruit (fresh or freeze dried), baked fava beans or chick peas, multi grain rice crackers & hummus (carefully as a slider), & peanut paste. I tend not to eat sweet foods at all so there’s very little sugar, sugar alternatives or artificial sugar in my diet. Bonus is the snacking between meals actually helps keep my acidic stomach under better control. Out of curiosity does anyone else find the time between eating gets less as the day goes on? I eat at 9am, 1pm, 2:30pm, 4pm, 5pm (not always), 6pm & 7pm.

    Surgery date

    My date is March 1, and I dont have to start liquid diet until afterwards. Just low carb/no sugar one week out, although I’ve already started as a way to get my head in the game and stay invested. Good luck to all!
  10. Yes it does get better. At the moment you’re healing from pretty major surgery & everything is swollen, tender & sensitive. Diarrhoea, nausea, low energy, light headedness, difficulty swallowing are all pretty common post surgical experiences. You’ll find in a month or so it has passed. I had a terribly embarrassing diarrhoea experience on day 3. Got up to pee, took a couple of steps & oh gracious no. Gush. No warning at all. It was dark from surgical bleeding & had a foul odour. I had just the one attack but a friend had it persist for about a week. Beware ‘wet farts’. Her surgeon had recommended disposal knickers - she said it was best advice. I also had a lot of swelling in my throat making swallowing everything for water to meds a struggle for a few days. It was pretty much fine by day 4. It’s important to at least be close to your fluid goals. Dehydration is a real issue for us after surgery. Try warming your water, shakes & other fluids. Warm drinks tend to be more soothing & easier to swallow. I was allowed green or herbal teas - they were fabulous. Don’t worry if you sip on your shakes & soups for ages as long as you’re getting them in. I also used to dilute them to make them thinner & easier to tolerate (esp the shakes which were disgusting after surgery). Bonus was I was consuming more fluid. All the best.
  11. Yes everything old is new again lol. But I honestly did this prior to surgery, I went through my closet and cleared out about half of my clothes that were getting too big or I knew I wasn't going to wear after. I could have gotten rid of more but wasn't quite ready to part with some things yet. But I know most if not all of my closet is going to have to go. I'm only about a week out from surgery and already almost 10lbs down.

    Hello ! You already have journeyed from the 4's to the 3's ! You have lost weight, and continue to do so. Your body will lose weight if you eat and drink what you are supposed to, and if you move your body more than you did before. Before what ? One more step than yesterday, one more stretch .... and keep going. You can and will do this. Do not let anyone shame or blame or try to tell you anything. Rely on your doctor and your nutrition specialist and the professionals who are supporting you through this. Celebrate every ounce you lose and treat yourself well.

    Documenting your journey

    I have a wellness log, where I try to put in the exercise and food I will have for the week, groceries list etc. You set up goals for the month and write other things that will help you achieve those goals, so I have been putting a picture at the beginning of each month along with my measurements and weight to keep track of it. I also kept one pair of jeans from when I did my consultation with the surgeon to remind me of the journey and do that picture at 1 year. I have seen others do the picture on the same door and in the frame, you can really tell the difference in those.
  15. I am scheduled for the sleeve next week (Feb 23). Looking for ideas on documenting this journey, i.e photos, videos, ect. A few years ago I saw someone that had taken a picture once a month in the same spot, same clothes, then put them into a video and you see her literally shrinking. It was very cool. This is for my own self, NOT for social media, but wondering what others do? I'm not a journal writer, but I'm sure that would be tremendously helpful to go back and read where your head was at!

    Migraines and Pre-Op Diet

    The increase of headaches and migraines during the pre-op diet is due to carbohydrate withdrawal. For future pre-opers, the best way to reduce carb and caffine withdrawal headaches is to gradually decrease carbs and caffeine over a period of weeks rather than a sudden cold turkey approach.

    Migraines and Pre-Op Diet

    Thank you @Spinoza !! I think I am those 3 things as well. I think I am doing pretty well with the caffeine. The first few days, I had that change of diet and caffeine headache ( pretty sure ); then, this weekend, the migraine business came into effect and has been pretty much non stop. I am really only allowed 4 shakes a mini bar and a banana per day until this weekend then no banana and no mini bar since my surgery is Monday. I am so close I just am dragging with this. I will call my clinic tomorrow and see what they say.

    soft diet/ puree stage 3

    "Stage 3" means different things to different patients, if it means anything at all. Puree, on the other hand, has a consistent meaning. I pureed every good thing. EVERY meat that tasted good with every great seasoning or sauce. If you can imagine it, I pureed it, and it was great! I didn't do pictures because back then we didn't photograph food, we ate it. Mongolian BBQ was terrific, as were Thai foods. Italian sauces added a great level to flavors. Even BBQ was a great flavor. If it was a favorite to binge on pre-op it was a wonderful post-op flavoring. Want to know what I was eating? Imagine your favorites in your mind... that's what I was eating. Hope this helps.     Oh this is SO interesting to me! I graze on Mondays and always allow myself extra leeway. It's far and away my worst eating day of the week but I have learned to allow myself this and then track track track Tuesday - Friday. Interesting.

  23. Hi Everyone, I have been getting a ton of Migraines during my 2 week pre op diet. Is this typical for other migraine sufferers? I wonder if I am missing something essential in my diet triggering them, and am curious if anyone found the missing link. Overall I have done well with the pre op diet, but these migraines are killing me.

    Grazing, is this normal?

    I graze all day too. Since the beginning. Like @Ms.SSS said it's the total calories at the end of the day. For example, today I had 3 that's it dark chocolate truffles, later I had 100g watermelon, an hour or so later I had a cup of grapes. If i graze on the heavy side during the day, I will skip dinner or eat light low calorie filling snack instead... Etc. I give myself a lot of leeway, I go by average monthly calories so when if I go over average calories one week, I know I can make up for it the week after. I don't think it's a problem unless you are eating due to emotion and/or eating out of boredom. Even then, if one tracks, it makes one aware and helps keep the weight from creeping back while trying to figuring out things emotionally.
