  1. My BMI is 39 and I was a candidate for either one; however, I suffer from bad heartburn. The doctor recommended the bypass vs sleeve for me. He said I would also have less chance to regain the weight due to the dumping syndrome "tool". I've done tons of research and know the bypass is right for me. Surgery is Monday! I think the nerves are normal. Good luck!

    Help! Thinking about cancelling

I also wanted the sleeve. I have had GERD for do many years, my surgeon recommended the bypass. I am so glad I listened to him. Sent from my SM-N976V using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. I too went to see the surgeon convinced I wanted the sleeve and I was afraid of the bypass. The surgeon told me I would benefit more from the bypass. This is because I have diabetes and he said people have more success putting diabetes into "remission" (not having symptoms anymore) with the bypass. I also have a high BMI. On 11/10, I am having the bypass because if I can kick diabetes to the curb I will. I have many diabetes complications; nephropathy, a damaged retina, an amputated toe, etc. To get off insulin and live without diabetes is like a dream. I have been reading about people who have had the bypass and now I no longer fear it, I'm looking forward to it! If you have something like diabetes, I would take the doctor's advice. I've had it almost 20 years and it gets worse with age. I am more afraid to get older and older with my all health problems than of getting the bypass. Just my $.002, I wish you well with whatever decision you make.

Hi BigSue, I have my bypass on November 10th. I am a big supplement taker and I didn't know you could still take capsules after a bypass. How long after your surgery were you able to take the capsules? Thanks!
  5. I’m in! My bypass surgery date is 11/5. Getting nervous, but excited too. My journey started 12 years ago with the lap band. After having some issues I had to have that removed in January. I loved my band, but I am hoping this is going to be even better. I am 5’2” and 225.

  11. Hi there! I'm having my bypass surgery on 10/26 and would like to connect with people that are having bypass surgery on or around the same date so that we can follow each other's journey's. Good luck to everyone!
  12. Hello all! I'm new here. My surgery is this Monday, 10/26, and I'm having a gastric bypass. Any post-op advice you can share is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
  13. Sherry McKenzie Surgery was almost 10 years ago. In the past year and a half, I've developed problems no one can answer. My bariatric surgeon no longer has the practice, so I'm not being followed by anyone unless a problem arises, then its my family practice who refers me out to various specialists who find nothing wrong. My issues are as follows: nausea daily sometimes more than once per day with or without food. Sometimes eating makes it worse. No appetite. Thought of eating makes me ill some days. Vomiting once in a while. Dizziness, ready to faint. Sweaty, like cold then hot flashes. Heart palpitations. Irritability. Fatigue. Female hormones and thyroid all check out ok. GI did upper GI no problems there. Blood work showed I'm very hypoglycemic. Given nausea meds but I'm tired of taking it twice a day. I eat snacks every 2-3 hrs. if I can. Meal time: just a few bites and I'm full. I've cut out specific foods and methods of cooking. It helped a little but still have issues. I'm at a loss. Per a nurse friend, I did some research, that indicated maybe I'm missing gastric enzymes needed to digest specific foods. Found your website for support and another that indicates my problems are not uncommon several years after gastric bypass. Recommendations and support is what I seek. Thank you.

    Post op pain

Yes, I had to have my Lapland removed because it caused dysphagia, GERD, and a hiatal herbal. I suffered for 5 years. He was able to remove the band and do the bypass at the same time.

    Can't drink any fluids

What did your doctor end up saying? For a while after my VSG all I could drink was grape Powerade zero or Walmart brand grape water bottle packets; I don’t know what it was but definitely strange as I hated artificial grape anything before surgery. After my VSG to RNY revision though it was much easier to drink anything except if it was icy cold. In that case it would come right back up. Now that I’m a few months out from revision it’s much easier to get in cold drinks.
  16. The general industry practice is, assuming that there isn't any "1 WLS per lifetime" restrictions, is that for regain or inadequate weightloss problems, the same basic BMI rules apply (40 or above, or 35 with comorbidities). With a complication such as your GERD, however, it is no longer considered a "revision" as a surgery addressing the complication. The policy bulleting on WLS for your policy may or may not be that specific in this case, and you need to get a reading from the insurance company for you specific circumstance. Your surgeon's office should have an insurance coordinator on staff who handles all of this, as they know the language and the in's and out's of the system. Since it is how they (the doctor's office) get paid, it really is their job to do so. Perhaps there is another surgeon in your area who has a better business office? Assuming that the original surgery was covered by insurance, a complication such as this is usually covered as well.

    BCBS revision requirements

I have BCBSTX and needed revision due to GERD and was approved. My plan had a $3,000 copy for Weightloss surgery so that is what my out of pocket was.
  18. I am looking for revision due to GERD and a little weight gain back from sleeve. My GERD is so bad I have been waking up choking on it. I called BCBS to ask them their requirements and the woman referenced me to a page in the book that clearly states NOTHING about revision requirements. I’m miserable. The dr office won’t even look at me u til I find out if revision is covered by my insurance and they simply just won’t give me a yes or no answer.

    I'm Doing It!

I have had a few food funerals too. Mexican, and a milkshake. I stopped them because I wanted to create my good habits now, to keep them going after. My ex-sil had gastric bypass. She did very well and lost a lot of weight, but she stalled really hard because they ate the same things. Fast food, cheeseburgers...just she ate a quarter of it instead of the whole thing. I’m definitely wanting to avoid all those things anyway! Im nervous how to get by with the liquid diet at work, without having to tell people. We eat all together, so they will notice I’m not eating solid food. I’m not sure what to say when they ask, and they will because we all can be some nosy b’s. 😂😂.

    Hate bypass

No question is dumb. The restriction we feel with the sleeve is at the gate of the ending of our stomachs into our intestines. There’s a natural tightness there that allows for food to empty slowly. With the bypass it literally bypass all of that and empty into the intestines. The little gate or tightness is bypassed
  21. DesperateEC

    Hate bypass

Yes I’m down 80 pounds since March. It’s just harder because the sleeve lets you know almost immediately that you’ve had enough or too much. The bypass doesn’t. Each individual is different. If I stayed on course I would’ve lost more but I’m trying my best and that’s all you can do
  22. Anyone have the OverStitch procedure after gastric bypass?

New to the forum, had surgery Monday

Bless your heart I can imagine. I deal with a bad rotator cuff aleady. I am waiting on Insurance approval for my bypass so hoping for sometime in November.

    Revision completed

That's weird that your drinking behavior changed all of a sudden and I can see why you didn't expect it. I wouldn't have expected it after a revision neither. You're definitely right. Get a grip on it as soon as possible.

    Dr. Udelhofen!

Hello, I was scheduled nov 17th and then canceled. I really didn’t feel comfortable after trying to get a few answers and seeing a few reviews. Dr really tried to talk me out of bypass because he doesn’t like them ( his words ). I just choose to stay closer to my home. Cincinnati was around 3 hrs from home. goodluck on your surgery!
