  1. Deb, I wish I could offer you more advice; I had checked with Medicaid and ColoradoHealthOP, and they actually don't cover Lap Band--only sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. I'm really impressed you got Aetna to cover it, and I hope that works well for you. I would say to just exercise even if it's uncomfortable and log your foods really carefully. Joining Weight Watchers (and not using your weekly flex points) might be a way to stay on track during this pre op period. Remember, it's tough, but this is only temporary. It should get better! Good luck

Before & After Gastric Bypass and with the life threatening complications I'm very lucky to be alive today. Went in at 360lbs on November 29th 2010 and 1 year later I was 195lbs not bad for a guy who was minutes from dying on December 1st 2010

    Got my surgery date!!!!

Well initially i was really thinking lap band, but i was still very on the fence, and after i talked to my doctor he said that because of my medical problems already that Gastric Bypass might be the better fit for me. the only big thing before this that made me want lapband, was because i was told that you cannot get pregnant after bypass, and for me only being 19, thats a problem, but after talking to my doctor he said that pregnancy would be absolutely fine in my case at least, and after thinking it over for about a month, i decided that Bypass, would be the perfect fit for me. its really an idividual thing, i just feeel that it fits me best, a lot of people find lap band to be the better fit. but yeah, thats pretty much how i decided on bypass.
  4. not that you asked for the advice of a nurse practitioner student but i had my surgery in november and went back to clinicals soon after that. the recovery isn't as brutal as u think. good luck.

  7. I've known a couple people who had gastric bypass and had a lot of hair loss post op. I'm really hoping that this is just because they were being non compliment or something. Has anyone else known this to happen and does it happen to everyone?

    Pre surgery

I feel like this is taking a long time, but then I read what you all are doing and I seem to be moving pretty quickly. October 22 will be 2 months and I will be done with all requirements by November 1st. That's like 10 weeks or so. I just hope there are no red flags on the tests and that there is still room on the surgery schedule. Sent from my LGLS992 using the BariatricPal App

  10. My Sleeved Tummy

    Any Minnesota people out there?

I'm also from Rochester, and going through the LEARN program at Mayo for surgery. I'm not sure if I will have bypass or sleeve, but I'm leaning towards sleeve at this point. Who is your surgeon? Kendrick?

    Pre-op diet starts tomorrow

Make sure that you have protein shakes that you can drink and don't hate. They go a super long way to keep you from being hungry during that time. The hardest part for me, and really, it still is, is my mouth feels yucky from not eating. Have popsicles, they are very soothing! Broth tastes good when you aren't eating! The biggest thing I'd suggest though is that you focus on the goal. You fought so hard to get this revision, do not blow it by cheating on the diet! You dont want to give insurance any excuse to back out. My biggest fear was the surgeon would go in, my liver would be too big and he'd close me up without doing the bypass. It kept me honest lol. Good luck and if you are struggling, come on here and talk about it!
  12. Hi, this is my first post to lapbandtalk.com! I just received news today that my operation was approved by my insurance company and I have a date!!!! November 13, 2008-----I was so excited I started to cry.

You are starting an amazing journey. I am so excited for you! Good Luck! November 5th will come faster than you know it.
  14. Hi Newbie! Welcome. We all had those feelings of doubt and being unsure. The best way to overcome all of that is by educating yourself. Only you will really know what is right for you. Read everything you can get your hands on, including the Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies book, which is quite informative. Also, peruse this site and obesityhelp.com and you will get all the good, the bad, and the ugly--and the remarkable and inspiring! None of us can tell you if this is right for you. But a good conversation with a gastric surgeon and maybe even visiting support groups in advance would go a long way toward making your decisions. Yes, start with your primary care doc as he/she will be an integral part of your care and pre-op activity if you decide to go through with it; however, your primary doc may not be the best source of information about the surgery. Honestly, they seem to know what it is and that it could benefit the obese, but not much more. After all, it's not their specialty. Information is your best bet! I'll leave you with what my surgeon told me: the lap band is a slight risk, the gastic sleeve slightly more, and the gastric bypass even moreso. But the most dangerous and risky thing you can do about your obesity is nothing!
  15. After attending my first seminar on 7/21, I just received the call that my first doctor's appointment has been scheduled for 8/7. Wow, that was fast!!! I was told I would be getting my nutritional, exercise, and mental health counseling on this day, along with a visit with the surgeon. I was told that since I had Tricare and they covered Bypass with co-morbidities, without pre-surgery dieting, I could likely be looking at a late August surgery. So excited!!
  16. Yay! I had my psych exam this morning and everything is great there as I knew it would be. I have my nutrition class on May 8th and exercise class on June 12th. Then June 12th is preparing for surgery class / Pre-Op education then surgery. I'm so excited and getting closer to my Gastric Bypass surgery.
  17. Hello again. Since my last post (which in actuality was my first post), I have received a surgery date (November 12th!). Here is what I have planned and what I have been doing thus far. I have lost about 5 lbs (according to my new digital scale - God I hope it is right!). I am really conscious of what I put in my mouth. I am drinking a ton of Water every day and cutting back on caffeine. I purchased powder Protein which I intend to experiment with a little, so I'm not in total shock come time for the REAL DEAL. I purchased a cool single serve blender and started taking Vitamins everyday. In reality, I should have been taking a Multivitamin everyday already, but better late than never. I have the following appts to get through before the surgery date: another dietician appt; barium swallow test; meet the surgeon (all at end of September). then in October, I have to attend four mandatory classes; and a day long appt. for a whole bunch of things that the girl on the phone couldn't explain to me...I know one appt. is for an ekg, I'm thinking some bloodwork; dietician again and an appt. to discuss "what to expect" after surgery. hmmm I think that about covers it all. I told myself that I would not think negative thoughts about my insurance coming up with some "blip". So I kinda don't give it a second thought really. Hope all goes well. Wish me luck! Thanks for reading...I'll keep you posted - Diane (p.s. I already decided that I would not attend the family thanksgiving this year - too much preasure and I probably won't feel so great)

    South Jersey

Hey sorry it took so long to get back to you. I've just finished my pre-op stuff last month(november). I started my whole process back in june. I was in no hurry at all. Back in august Dr. Neff asked when i would like to set a date for, I decided to go with Jan. 7th. I found out that respitory was the longest to get done. During my sleep study I found out i had severe sleep apnea so the pulm dr. wouldnt clear till i used my machine for 30 days and had to get a chest xray and a lung fuction test. I used Dr. Obergon for pulm. But depending on how fast you get your appointments you can get in probaly 4-5 months
  19. I have been required by my insurance to participate in a 3 month supervised weight loss plan prior to submitting a request for weight loss surgery. I weighed in on November 07, 2013 and I have to do my final weigh in on December 19, 2013 prior to my doctor submitting a claim to my insurance, blue cross blue shield federal plan. My question is this, I believe I have gained about 4 pounds since my last weigh in and the whole time I have been on the diet I have lost. I am guessing I did not do as good as I thought throught the holidays. Has anyone ever gained weight in the supervised diet with blue cross blue shield federal and got denied or approved. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Hair loss?

use the search function at the top of the page and put in hair loss or hairloss or Biotin There TONS of threads around here about it and I think the consensus is that bypass patients usually have worse trouble with it than bandsters. I'll try to dig up one of the threads and put the link here.

    2 questions....from a pre op newbie

If you eat too much sugar and your digestive system responds with a surge of fluid and it cause inflammation and nausea as well as tachycardia and sweating and a lot of pain. It usually happens with bypass, rare in the sleeve as our food is still digested normally..

  24. I told people I was on a liquid detox boost diet.. no caffeine/booze etc.... no one really questioned it. They knew I was on a diet anyway (was at WW since November 2009) and I just said I was stalling having had guests etc and a wedding to go to... so this was my way of kickstarting myself again - thus preparing for the long term diet.... I also have up my sleeve (forgive the pun) an excuse of hypnotherapy cds, and a couple of slimming therapy books.... My scars are healing nicely - and I think will fade to virtually nothing. Just take are of them during the healing process. I can also say that at 2 weeks I felt back to normal again with much more energy. Good luck! Kathy
