Follow up with surgeon or primary care? How often do you have blood work done??
2Bsmaller18 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you following up with your surgeon annually for blood work or do you see your primary care doctor? My surgeon has me coming in every 6 to 8 months (I am 20 months post bypass) for blood work and to have an in person appointment. I met my goal at 6 months, have maintained, don't have any issues so I am not sure if it's really necessary to see the surgeon. I would also assume I just need annual labs done at this point. -
Hi had my gastric bypass on post day 5. Roughly a week left of liquid diet. I am finding it difficult with head hunger. Wishing for solid foods right now can't concentrate sometimes. I am having soup, milk, yoghurt, broth pretty much . Any suggestions with things that can help ? Anyone finished the liquid stage earlier cause they couldn't deal with it ? Thanks

Discouraged about protein intake

I can tell you what my Dr told me at that phase I had the same trouble, he said not to worry about that, to get the protien shakes in that I can even comfortably. If its just a half or 1 no prob! but don't fret about it The most important thing in the first 4 weeks is FLUID FLUID FLUID & make sure to take your supplements ♡ Congrats on surgery! I had G-Bypass and gallbladder out on August 24th, 313 is my heaviest weight, 307 on start of program, 293 on surgery day and I'm now 250 (43 lbs post surgery loss) at 9 weeks out.. You shouldn't stress and if you have any questions at all your 1st line should be your mychart to ask the dr. There are no small questions. We're all here to offer answers on general stuff but I do recommend asking your dr too. -
9 days post-op and nauseous
AJaymon replied to aubrey_'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry, I know that sucks. I had a bypass and for me it was around 2 weeks before the daily nausea went away. And the same before I could sleep in my bed instead of the recliner due to the pain with turning/twisting. After that though I quickly got better. It was like one day I couldn't easily get up out of a recliner and then 2 days later I was back on the treadmill. So for me at least, it was normal. As for getting through the nausea my biggest hurdle was getting enough fluid. All my usual fav drinks were making me even more nauseas. I ended up just trying a glass of everything I could think of until I found one that worked. Once I found that is when I started feeling better. Oh, and I also went through a lot of sugar free peppermints so I could suck on something when my mouth tasted gross. Probably not the best choice for someone with candy addictions, but it helped a lot. I really do hope you find something soon that works for you. And as always, if you aren't sure which way to turn then think about reaching out to your medical team. If they are like mine then they are happy to help. -
Welcome to the site and congratulations on the beginning of your journey! I was 31 when I started my journey, 32 when I had my surgery, and now I'm 33 at 9 months post-op. I only wish I'd done it sooner! I had the Loop Duodenal Switch surgery (also called SIP-S) and if you are exploring all types of surgeries and if you get curious about the Loop DS please don't hesitate to ask and I'll tell you about my own personal experience with the surgery. Do all the research you can and find the right surgery for YOU! (though personally, I think Gastric Bypass looks the best at first glance because of your acid reflux. VSG isn't the best option because of that and my surgery has a sleeved stomach... but in the end it's very much a personal choice and very much up to you) I wish you the best!

Food Before and After Photos
2Bsmaller18 replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Looking at everyone's photos I feel I am eating about the same amount, maybe less. I am getting close to the 2 year mark post bypass. Only family knows about surgery. Due to covid and pre Covid work environment I rarely have meals outside of immediate family. I'm stressed about a year form now still drawing attention with the extremely limited amount I can eat. Initially when losing I said I was dieting etc. This far out does anyone have a go to phrase when you are around others regarding eating being so limited. If I had to eat in front of someone now I would probably try to order a slider like soup or salad as my meal so I could eat a small but kind of "normal" portion without drawing attention. If I ordered chicken I would eat maybe 2 ounces and a few pieces of veggies and be stuffed. Is this normal to still be so limited to eating real food? There's no way I could eat 3 ounces of chicken with a half cup of veggies. I can eat 1/3 to maybe 1/2 of a regular size Panera salad. -
Anyone for October 2020?
dal101 replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had my bypass 31st. Woke up from the operation thinking they hadnt done it yet lol. The gas pain was ok and there was very little nausea. I think I had a good recovery, could drink liquids right after, no problems. Post op 1 day I was back at home . But I have to do those anti clotting injections myself for 20 days, that sucks. And the liquid diet is hard with head hunger. I don't drink shakes because the one I have give me gas. -
Beginning BMI 35 or under

Thanks for the advice. I do have a question though, did you feel like you had to get a revision because, with 50 pounds to go, you had just stopped losing? -
Beginning BMI 35 or under
redhead_che replied to 1GardenGirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had a BMI of 32 with no comorbidities. I had to self pay. First spot was in September and I had surgery in November. This was 2017. I advise addressing any food addiction or other mental health concerns adequately prior to surgery. Or you may end up like me 3 years later and qualifying for surgery yet again and pursuing revision. Dealt with my trauma with food and I had to do therapy before I felt ready to seek revision now. -
Suffering from ulcers and chronic pain, help!
RickM replied to Prayingforbetter's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You have been through the wringer on this, so sorry you have had to go through it. I don't have any experience specific to this, but some maybe distantly related. I have seen that when they have an intransigent ulcer problem, classically it's around the anastomosis between the pouch and intestine, they usually just reverse the bypass, though that isn't really an option for you as that would put you back to your sleeve, which implicitly may not have been that well done in the first place. By reputation, I would try to seek a second opinion with Dr. Michel Gagner, who I believe has a presence in Toronto. He was one of the early adopters of the duodenal switch back in New York and has done some fairly complex revisions (such as RNY to DS) so is familiar with more complex problems. As to "done as much as we can" there is more that can be done. The most extreme thing would be a total gastrectomy, which isn't all that far from where you are now with an RNY, and is done in some cases of gastric cancer or gastroparesis. Basically they remove the remainder of the stomach and hook up the esophagus directly to the intestine, where your pouch is now. or close to it. Between surgery and adaptation, they form a new pouch in the intestine. Surgically, it is a bigger deal than it sounds as they don't like attaching the esophagus to anything other than itself (you would likely be on a feeding tube while it heals, but you've already been through that,) but it is a not uncommon configuration that people live well with (similar to your typical RNY lifestyle once everything heals.) Your average bariatric practice may or may not have the experience to do this, and you might have to go to a hospital that has a specialized gastric surgery department and/or cancer center. Simpler than the above, I have seen reference to a few people who were having significant RNY ulcer problems, again in the typical anastomosis region, where they went in and moved the anastomosis down the intestine a bit farther to a fresh spot, so that might be an option depending upon circumstances. Those are a couple of ideas that you can look into and question your docs about, and maybe seek out ones with a somewhat different specialty that may be able to help. Good luck in working through this, -
I’m looking to have a sleeve to bypass revision but I’m not sure what my insurance will cover. Is anyone on BCBSIL PPO 204 plan?
-
That is good to know. I’m scheduled to have my sleeve on Friday. I wonder if it’s too late to switch to bypass? I’ll have to ask today.

Anyone November 2020
SassyTigris replied to mgilbert's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wanted to get the bypass, but I have RA and there definition times in the future when I will need to take NSAIDS so sleeve was my only real option. From what I hear of done properly it can be just as effective so I have my fingers crossed. -
Yes! I am having my sleeve to bypass revision surgery on the 4th of December. :)

Sleeve to...? Revision seeker
RickM replied to redhead_che's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
For a regain problem I would not generally go from a sleeve to a bypass, as metabolically the two are too similar and one usually winds up in the same place after a couple of years. Indeed, most revisions don't yield a lot of additional weight loss; those that do mostly seem to be those who really crack the whip and get their dietary and psych acts together for the second try. One will usually lose a few pounds, typically twenty, give or take - mostly what one would expect from having to go through all the diet restrictions associated with going through the surgery again. The simple minded way I like to think of the reasoning for the general poor results is that our stomachs started out being able to hold 32-64 oz before our original WLS, and now, a few years post op, our stomachs, even after some adaptation and stretching, hold 4-6 oz (maybe 8 in some cases), we have gotten used to living with that, so there isn't nearly as much of a difference going through the surgery again. The DS will usually provide better results, particularly in being more regain resistant. As with the others, it is hard to expect as good results as with virgin DS, but it should still work better than the others. When I discussed this matter with our surgeon when I had my VSG - the prospect of using a DS revision as a "plan B" backup to the VSG, he cautioned about the problem of losing that regain; he said that the revision works best if you catch it early, before substantial regain has occurred, as the biggest strength of the DS is its ability to resist regain. You are fortunate in starting with the sleeve, as that has maintained more options for you - revising an RNY to anything else that may work better (like the DS) is a very complex undertaking that few surgeons can do; as the sleeve is the basis of the DS, changing to the DS is more of a "completion" of the DS rather than an outright revision and is a pretty straightforward procedure for any DS qualified surgeon. You seem to be doing the right things, in working out the problems that led to your regain, as that will be a key to your future success. Good luck! -
Nov 2020 Bypass Peeps?
Luna805 replied to Lanie Hardy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Bypass scheduled Nov 18th! I prepaid the hospital, picked up some vitamins and protein powder and feel pretty prepared. The only thing that I’m nervous about is pain. My hospital only does Tylenol with coding and that feels crazy to me 🙁 -
Suffering from ulcers and chronic pain, help!
Prayingforbetter replied to Prayingforbetter's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you so much for that message honestly. It’s been pretty crappy I won’t lie and after talking to that last surgeon is really just left me feeling like a big pile of poop. in terms of medications and whatnot I totally don’t mind sharing. The dilaudid Im currently on is the liquid version which I find super helpful but obviously it’s strong as hell and can lead to an addiction. I already know my body is addicted just based on what happens if I miss a dose (typical withdrawal symptoms.) I don’t take anything over the counter anymore due to my fear of making them worse so I’ve been really big on just taking the medications they give me and praying they work. I know that they have found the ulcers (usually on one or two at a time) in the stomach pouch near the incision site where they closed the stomach. I never used to deal with ulcers before surgery and they were why I actually had to get the bypass, the sleeve was creating far too much acid which was then leading to the ulcers forming. Thank you so much for all of your advice. I’m for sure gonna start tracking my foods and moods as I continue forward. I do have a psychologist I see frequently and I’ve been working with her to help keep my stress low as that’s the only thing that I can say that’s not something that I have been taking too seriously compared to the diet changes, drinking, and even medication changes. Your advice on educating myself is actually super smart and tomorrow I’m going to reach out to all my doctors and the hospitals and ask for their paperwork on everything from 2017 when I had the sleeve. Part of me feels like if I educate the hell out of myself I can poke holes in what they or saying or if another doctor throws his hands up and says “‘what tests do you want me to do, because I’ve done as much as I can” I might feel more comfortable actually holding them accountable and giving them a test request. While Im exhausted and over this, you’re right, if I don’t advocate for myself and fight for my health no one else will. No one deserves to live this way and just because they don’t know how to deal with these issues today doesn’t mean they won’t be able to deal with them in the future. Thanks again 💛 -
Conversion rate from Sleeve to Bypass is a lot higher then I expected. I found people a few years out having trouble with acid with the sleeve. After researching, bypass is still the only one considered the gold standard for weight loss. I liked the longevity of information on bypass and the lower weight that can be reached. This is just my findings and when I brought it up to my surgeon she agreed with my switch plan. But sleeve people are still having great results, there’s no wrong surgery. Just bypass felt better for me after learning more about sleeve conversion to bypass.

I’m curious... what made you switch from sleeve to bypass?

Sleeve to...? Revision seeker
redhead_che replied to redhead_che's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I thought I was leaning towards bypass, but a very wise soul on this board suggested I look into DS, as it’s seen as a gold standard for weight loss surgery. I have done very little research on DS, but I plan on asking my surgeon (hopefully surgeon that is) what their thoughts are on it! I’m open to whatever can help me get these extra 100+ pounds off. -
My original plan was to get a sleeve, but after my endoscopy, my doctor told me that my esophagus had some irritation from gastric reflux and that I have a hiatal hernia. He said that if I got the sleeve, there was a pretty good chance I'd be wanting a revision down the line, so he suggested the bypass and I agreed, in light of my GERD and hernia issues. Good luck to you too! I'll also be checking in often.
-
I see a lot more people getting the sleeve. I’m also getting bypass on November 18th. Good luck to you! I’ll be curious and checking in! I only wanted the sleeve starting in January this year. But after Covid, it was pushed way back and I had more time to research. The amount of conversion to bypass from sleeve was something I learned during the wait time. So happy I changed my mind :)

Sleeve to...? Revision seeker

Hey I revised to DS 4 weeks ago tomorrow. I was 6 years out from sleeve. Insurance paid as it was treated as a new surgery and so I just had to do a regular qualification. No diets or anything, just whatever the insurance required. I think it took about 6 or 7 weeks to get scheduled from my initial consult. Do you know what procedure you are leaning toward?
