New here & on my journey
TwoStepsBack replied to Bryn's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Bryn, I too started over on Lapbandtalk.com, but wanted to do plenty of research before coming to a decision. Once I started seriously considering the long term complications of the band I decided it wasn't for me and looked for an alternative. The bypass was never an option for me due to bowel issues, so that left the sleeve. It sounded terrifying at first, and I almost scrapped the idea. But after chatting to these guys on here for a month or so and doing tons of research, I decided to go ahead privately as I live in Guernsey and the local health department do not financially support WLS of any kind. I was sleeved 10 days ago in Southampton, and recovery is going well. I am SO happy I didn't go with the band. You're in the right place for support and helpful information, trust me. There's nothing these guys don't know! :thumbup1: Welcome! And good luck on your journey! xx -
I am 52, off all meds, overall well considering I have gained weight. Surgery wt. 353 3/2003, lowest in 2005 200 and curently 253. I was at 263 two and half weeks ago. Started changing eating and exercising. If I would have dont that from the beginning I would not be in this situation. I am having a total hip replacement next month and tryint to have 25 lbs off. I have 15 more to go before my surgery. I would like to get down to 185-190 as my goal. My bloodwork has always been good since beginning to date. I did not exercise after surgery and after 2 yrs starting drinking diet cokes and eating sweets. I dumped on and off the first 7 years. I have not really dumped over the last couple of years. I have never been able to throw up since surgery. I only have dry heaves and spitting. (sorry for the graphics). My still can not eat large amounts at one setting. More than at first, but not nearly like prior to surgery. I know how and why I gained. I didn't work within the guidelines. The one guideline I did follow to date is not drinking with my meals. I currently am not eating much meat or processed food. Feeling much better and getting around 65 gram of Protein a day. I do lots of grains, whole foods and lentils. I have found the iphone app "My fitness Pal" extremly helpful. I know my body has been transformed inside, but other than large amounts I was back at my old lifestyle. At 52 and hip surgery upcoming I can not live in denial anylonger. I can have surgery, make excuses and lie, but I will not live a good quality of life. I have been blessed with a good surgeon for bypass, supportive family and grace by God. Looking for others who may be in the same boat!! Warrior253

I didn't realize the hospital in Mac had a support group. I had surgery 7/1/15 which was revision from band to sleeve. Surgery was done at Legacy Good Sam in Portland but hard to get back to in the evening from the Forest Grove area. I am gonna have to check out the support group dates and times. How are you all doing after surgery?

What If Your Dr Doesn't Want To Do The Sleeve?

The surgeon makes the decision. Tell him you want sleeve and if you need more, you'll convert it to bypass -
What If Your Dr Doesn't Want To Do The Sleeve?
MGM replied to I am done mooing!'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Since the sleeve is often the first part of a gastric bypass surgery when done in two parts for extremely high BMI, maybe you can remind him of that. A bypass can always be performed if the sleeve isn't a successful tool for you. -

Band To Sleeve. Is It All It's Cracked Up To Be?
ChaChaBurch replied to kate33's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my band in Jan. 2007. I had issues from the start, even though I lost around 45 - 50 pounds. I had my revision done just 2 months ago and all I can say is, WOW!!!!! What a difference! I feel better, eat better and have had zero complications. If any of you have a Facebook page, there's a great page called "Failed Lap-Bands and Realize Bands" and there is so much information about issues with the band and most of the folks on there have had revisions or are in the process of getting one. I would highly recommend it! -
Band To Sleeve. Is It All It's Cracked Up To Be?
Gilly replied to kate33's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my Realize band surgery June 2009. Dr Rodriguez did my revision at Star Medica on 4/27/12. I had a wonderful experience with Dr Rod and his staff. I am just a month out so I haven't been really adventurous yet. However, whatever I eat, it sits comfortably in my stomach, not my throat! I haven't yet slimed or thrown up. So far, I haven't had any acid reflux issues. I didn't really notice but I was eating a lot of soft foods, Soups and sliders with the band. If I had a lunch or dinner date, I would have to scope out the menu in advance just to make sure there was something that I could eat that I wouldn't get stuck on. With the sleeve, it's not an issue. I am adding in veggies and salads back into my diet. Although, I haven't tried any fruits yet. But my goal is to focus on getting to my goal weight before I start adding in more fruits. -
Doctor Discouraged Lap Band Procedure
Read2016 replied to marg294ever's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
At my seminar, the surgeon also discouraged the band. He said one of them are being taken off the market. At the time of the seminar, 2 weeks ago he said he is taking bands out and revising them to the sleeve. As far as the blood thinner, I think you would have to stop them before any surgical procedure. WLS and C-Sections
DanaMomto3 replied to lwilliams65's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had 2 c/s On my second one, my Dr could not tie my tibes due to the scar tissue. My OB said I need to tell any Dr who wants to take out my appendix of the scar tissue. My scar tissue was evident on my xrays and my surgeon says that it is no cause for worry. though, if I did a bypass, I would worry, My rpresurgical appt is on the 5th and that is something I will double check with him, -
Tasty but complete multi vitamin
Beckyyb93 replied to Patoonces's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I agree, I've heard such bad things about Flinestones but so so many people take them. There is a reason bariatric vitamins are made the crazy thing is some people are 100% fine taking them and have great lab work then someone else is deficient on 3-4 things so IMO it's a better idea to just take the complete ones, take your iron (even though I know you all hate it), take your vitamin D and take your calcium..just do it..you got this surgery knowing you would have to take vitamins for the rest of your life so it kinda baffles me when people just stop taking them..you can't just stop eating small portions it's not your choice to make anymore. Sorry, I have vitamin rants often with bypass patients in clinic because people seem to "forget" after they lose the weight but you permanently altered your body for forever so take your gosh darn vitamins!! -
Protein Bars - when were you allowed to have them?
MeMeMEEE posted a topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Previously my program didn't have them listed anywhere but they are revising everything right now to include them. I am curious when you were able to include them? -
Does anyone take B1? My buddy had a full gastric bypass and is required to take B1. Since my dr didn't bother to tell me to take B12, so I want to make sure that I don't need that as well. Thanks!

1 week and significant muscle loss !
Roo101769 replied to TheDue's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My NUT suggested OPurity multivitamins for me. They are designed specifically for sleeve and bypass patients. My guess is it has something to do with how they are absorbed but not sure. Anyway, you only need one a day, plus calcium. They do run a little low on B12 so she suggested to take additional B12 a couple times a week. I got them yesterday and tried it. I am pre op, but trying things out to at least have an idea. These pills are large chewables but not gummies. They weren't horrible but they seemed very (ie: TOO) sweet. But I figure post op it will be hard to consume one as quickly, will probably have to break it up so then the sweetness won't be as overwhelming. OPurity is best for me because it does not have added vitamin k. (I am on warfarin for life and need to restrict vitamin k) I think everyone's NUT and surgeon has different plans they follow. The overall basic is the same, but the rates and stages varies. My NUT said protein, protein, protein along with staying hydrated. Just stay with what works for you. Things will even out. At least you seem to be doing pretty well with recovery! -
my name is Kristy and i just started my process! :cursing: i am overly excited and day-dreamy. lol. i went to meet the surgeon today and he was telling me the important stuff to do after the surgery and just said a few things about it. it was SOO quick. crazy. it took 2 hours to get into the patient room, but once he came in...psshh.. 10 or so mins and we were done. i got the info and i need to make dietitian appt. very excited. the room was crazy, one wall was window and ...they have you in a chair facing it. i was like..whoa. better not fall forward lol. my mom went with me and as you can see, she's thin. she lost 150. :cryin: she had gastric bypass. in the pic, she is pointing to Angel's Stadium. perrrddyyy craaazyy. the doctor was impressed with how much i had with me lol. i had my letter, my years of records with primary doc. and my weight loss attempts. my mom joked and said that i want it done tomorrow and the doctor said .."you got cash?..haha" ......PFFT. lol. i told him 20 cents on me. he said to add a few zeros. hahah! HA. hahah. crazy. then he said with a smile, "i see you have a list of questions for me....." haha. i was too embarrassed to ask most of them HAHA. he covered the rest, so i only had a few. lol. cool stuff. i can't wait.

should you take any other supplements,
shuckybucky replied to kali480's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I'm not sure. When he did the revision I was so dehydrated that I couldn't go into surgery without fluids and a lot of potassium and I was so anemic that I had to get 2 units of blood after surgery. Even with the band I had to take multivitamins, calcium, and vitamin D. The only thing I have been told to take is Prilosec. -

Help me make the right decision
RestlessMonkey replied to changingmyways's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Carnie Wilson and Al Roker both gained weight back post RNY bypass, not the lap band. You have your surgeries confused. However, you have to work at keeping the weight off, regardless of which surgery. I suggest you talk w/your surgeon or maybe do some more research, however, before you decide. Only you will know if surgery is required for you, or not. -
Help me make the right decision
Jodi_620 replied to changingmyways's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Actually Carney Wilson and Al Roker had gastric bypass, not the Lap Band. There are actually people who have had gastric bypass and end up getting the Lap Band because they started gaining again. The great thing about the Lap Band is that it is adjustable, any time you ever start to gain weight you can go and get an adjustment. If you think that you can keep it off on your own then by all means, that is the best way. I have always been able to lose weight, done it about six times but I always gain it back and then some. The final decision is yours, nobody can tell you for sure that this is right for you. But make sure that you are 100% ready before you go forward. -
I had surgery on 11/22 and went back to work yesterday I had gastric bypass. I was alittle tired. I run my own daycare and did okay. So including my surgery day I took three days off! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
