    Terrified- surgery Tues

I am 47, and 46 at time of surgery. I did stay over night in the hospital per my surgeon’s requirement, but I would have been fine at home. As it was, I got to my room at 6 pm and was discharged by noon the next day. I did not receive any blood thinners. I started out with diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, GERD. I had gastric bypass with hiatal hernia repair. I now take just one blood pressure medication and everything else is resolved at just over 4 months post op. I have been on blood pressure medication since about age 30 when I was about 165 pounds, so don’t expect to ever go off it. I walked a lot after surgery to prevent blood clots. When awake, you should walk around for 5 of every 60 minutes. You don’t have to walk far or fast...movement is the key. If they feel you need to stay, they will keep you, regardless of plan for outpatient. I agree with others that you should discuss your concerns with your surgeon. Good luck!

    Terrified- surgery Tues

I just had my surgery on the 9th. I was switched from a bypass to a sleeve due to a hernia down low near my c-section scars, but my doc did fix a hiatal hernia while in there as well. I was there a little over 24 hours, they had talked of sending me home the same day but my nausea was vicious coming out from anesthesia and the phenergan they gave had me so tired and loopy I wasn’t going anywhere. They got me home right away after shift change the next day after I’d been up through the night walking. They gave me a heparin shot before my surgery, and then 3 more afterwards while I was on the surg floor. I wore scd’s while there as well as Ted hose...I was told to wear the compression socks for 3 days post op at home. I would talk to your doctor about your fears and anxieties surrounding potential clotting issues and go from there. My doctor and his team were/are amazing. The floor nurses and staff-amazing! I’m sure yours will all be too, and they will all want you to be comfortable with the care and rate at which your recovery progresses. You will do Fantastic, but you owe it to your own peace of mind to address your concerns before the surgery. Best of luck to you!!

    Terrified- surgery Tues

Each surgeon is different as is each patient. With my sleeve I was in patient overnight and got a dose of heparin before surgery and another the next day. I didn’t go home on blood thinners. Walking really helps with preventing blood clots so make sure you move but don’t overdo it either. If you have any questions you can always call your surgeon. Make sure you have a ride home though; they won’t let you drive yourself post-op. That said, sleeve surgery only takes about 90 minutes to complete so most of your stay will be waiting pre-op and in post-op recovery. Your fears about Covid aren’t without merit. Surgery does affect the immune system for a short while after. If you can avoid crowds and any excessive trips outside your home, I’d do that. Recovering during a pandemic is scary! I’ve been there. I had revision surgery due to GERD in August and I stayed home as much as possible. It made me feel safer and I was less nervous about catching Covid that way.

    December 2020 surgery

I am having my lap band removed and laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery on 8 December.
  5. If it helps I know someone who had the DS and lost too much weight and they just went back in and fixed her intestinal bypass portion so she was essentially just left with the sleeved stomach part. I know someone else who had malnutrition issues and had his intestinal portion reversed and was also just left with the sleeved stomach part. If the surgeon notices abnomalities and they can't get them under control you can always have the intestinal portion reversed. Just keep up with your labs and see a therapist about the anxiety if it continues to bother you, but rest assured that they can always reverse the intestinal bit (that's the bit that causes the malnutrition as it's your malabsorbative aspect of the surgery).

    Anyone November 2020

I am scheduled for bypass on 11/25 but am having a hard time getting excited about it as 3 out of 5 of the hospital systems in my area (Portland, Oregon) have suspended elective surgeries due to the rise in covid cases, mine hasn’t yet, but it’s likely. Ugh... max out of pocket is met, so frustrating.

    Revision due to GERD

I hear the pain is so much worse then the sleeve or if you had the bypass originally. Sounds like your doing great!! I have been on Protonix twice for months now plus Carafate four times a day. I’m excited for the weight loss don’t get me wrong I just keep reading that it is slow and some don’t lose so I was hoping to get tips on how to make sure I do lose. Hope you keep doing well.

    Revision due to GERD

Hello! I was sleeved in 2012 and lost 105! My acid reflux started getting worse. Especially at night too woke up w sore throat from the acid and tried diff medications. I got the bypass for acid reflux AND weight loss. More the acid I just want it gone. I’m 1.5 weeks post op. Had my bypass 11/2. I’ve lost 10 pounds so far in the week I’ve been home lol I’m feeling great. I will say the pain for this revision was horrible. My friend had bypass and didn’t have this much pain. Today I’m able to get around a lot and even house clean. I’m on protonix for 3 months but I was thinking I would not need it hmmm not sure but I do feel acid if I have Gatorade zero. Hopefullly it’s just because it’s so soon after surgery. But you will lose. Well I think so, I am. SW230, 2 week 1,000 cal diet low carb=216, after surgery 216. 10 days later I’m at 206. Goal 170. good luck!
  11. I had the sleeve in 2013. I lost a lot of weight. I have regained more then I would like but I’m still happy with the sleeve and no where near the size I was. I have had issues with GETD, vomiting and horrible heartburn at night. Finally got a doctor to listen to me and referral me to a surgeon who immediately knew I needed surgery to fix the problem. So know I’m scheduled for the bypass 11/23. My pain goal is relief from the GERD, vomiting and heartburn. However, I’m wondering how much weight will I lose, how fast will it come off? What are some tips for the second time around. i
  12. We have similar stories for sure. Lap band removed a year ago. Bypass last Sunday.

    Sleeve to Bypass & hungry?

I was revised almost 6 months ago. I had great restriction with the sleeve even at almost 3 years but now NOTHING. Its hard to wrap your head around it in the beginning. I hope you all have some kind of full feeling but I DONT. I feel like I never had WLS which scares the hell out of me. I can see how people regain with the by pass for sure and until you go from sleeve to bypass you dont have a clue !

    Struggling :/

There’s not as a great an issue with malabsorption with sleeve patients compared with those with a bypass. I get my calcium from at least three serves of dairy a day: yoghurt, milk, cheese. I get a 4th serve a few times a week from chia pudding which I make on dairy milk & powdered milk. Ask your medical team if you can have more frequent blood tests to see if upping your calcium through your diet has any impact. I have one about every three months requested by either my surgical team or my GP.
  15. This term has never been brought up at any of my appointments. I can try to define it in my head, but I’d love to hear the actual verbiage to define it. I had my surgery Monday, I was switched from bypass to sleeve because of some scar tissue and a hernia near my c section scars, my doc also fixed a hiatal hernia, so I had a lot going on in there, lol. So maybe it will be brought up at my 1 week appointment, but right now I am still being educated:)
  16. Congrats! I just had my bypass last week, so I’m still healing. Good luck! Let us know how it’s going.
  17. Congratulations on getting your date! I just had my Bypass last Thursday and was able to start purées today. I am 52 and had a lap and for 12 years. We all have our reasons for wanting to get healthier and there is no better reason than wanting to be here for your family! I was nervous and had a lot of doubts leading up to my surgery but kept my eye on the prize, a healthier happier life! I wish you much success in the coming weeks and months!
  18. Where did you get the SADI bypass?

    Burning pain

I had bypass on 6 days ago. The nurse from my surgeons office met with me before I was released from the hospital. She warned me that I would have this same pain you are describing. She said it is the largest incision in its final healing stage. She said this usually happens 12-14 days out and recommended that I save a few of my pain meds for when this happens. If you don’t have any pain meds left, perhaps a couple Tylenol would help. She said it will only last a day or two. If you aren’t able to get relief I would definitely call your surgeons office for advice. I hope you feel better soon!

    Anyone November 2020

HI. My RNY bypass surgery is November 18, 2020. I started my pre-surgery diet on November 4, 2020 and only loss about 2 pounds. I feel that is not enough for one week. Shouldn’t there be more weight loss in one week? I have one more week to go on my pre-surgery diet.

RNY because of GERD, not weight loss?

Hi AmandaQB! I’m RavensLady Annette. Nice to meet you. My surgery is next week, November 18th. I am also having the Roux-en Y Bypass surgery. My surgery will be done at Wake Forest Baptist Health in North Carolina. The only reasons I am having this surgery is to have a Hiatal Hernia repaired and GERD/Acid Reflux problems. I would love your support as well as give you my support if I can.

    Anyone November 2020

I had my gastric bypass on Nov. 2. Before surgery I purchased some “Better than Bullion “ to use as broth. I also got vegan protein powder and several juices, bariatric vitamins and miso soup. The surgery was much easier than I expected. My doctor performed robotic surgery. I was nervous before surgery but it was so easy. I’m in the liquid protein phase now. I make my own shakes since I cannot tolerate commercial protein drinks and I vegan. I purchased 200 1 oz cups with lids to portion out my drinks and easy to take when I go out.
  23. Sounds like you’ve had a rough journey. Wishing you a smooth run moving forward. Thank you! Hoping the revision does assist with the GERD (my surgeon said it will). Feeling more ‘real’ now. Today I did my pre-op blood test and dietician appt. starting my 2 week pre-op diet on the 20th of this month! 😮
