Confusion About Requirements (Denmark)
BoredFatGirl posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some history: I am a 29-year-old American woman living in Denmark on a residency permit with my husband and his kids. We tried to get pregnant for a while, but after many failed attempts, we decided to bring our concerns to an OB/GYN. I was diagnosed with PCOS and was asked to lose quite a bit of weight before they would help via fertility treatments. It has been a struggle to get any assistance at all in regards to PCOS related symptoms because of my weight, never mind the fertility issues that come along with it. I decided to go for bariatric surgery, as recommended by my GP. Meetings held & requirements so far: A week prior to my meetings, I was required to get an EKG and blood test done. 12/09/2019 (141kg / 310lbs) - I had my first meeting with one of the doctors at the diabetes center. It was basically just the start of a medical journal. He got my starting weight, illnesses, medication, and allergies. I was told that I need to lose 8% of my current weight, which would put me at 129kg / 284lbs. He told me that it looked like I would be offered surgery since I met the requirements (a BMI over 35 with concurrent related diseases, which, for me, is PCOS, sleep apnea, and a history of hypertension), but I would find out on my next visit. The day before I left on vacation (12/17/2019), I weighed 136kg / 299lbs! While I had a great time visiting family, I ate way too much unhealthy food and shot back up to 142kg / 313lbs when I returned home (01/09/2020). Yikes! 😩 I managed to get the weight back off before my next visit though! 01/15/2020 (135kg /297lbs) - This was my second meeting, but this time it was with a senior doctor. He described the pros and cons of each option for surgery. Due to me having a history of occasional acid reflux and heartburn, he suggested that I go with the bypass surgery. However, he told me that I could choose for myself. I have decided to stick with what he recommended. By the end of the conversation, he offered me the surgery (as I figured at this point 😂) and set up an appointment for me to see a dietitian. He also said that my EKG and blood tests came back normal. Within two weeks of the previous meeting, I had to send in a stool sample. Upcoming meetings: 02/18/2020 - My first appointment with a dietitian. 03/06/2020 - Normally, I would be required to attend a patient seminar with other overweight people prior to surgery, but because I do not speak fluent Danish, I will have to participate in a 1-on-1 meeting with the details of how the operation takes place, how to prepare, and how to eat/live after the operation. This is a plus to me, as I am normally uncomfortable in large groups of people. As of today (01/26/2020), I weigh 133kg / 293lbs! With this current rate of weight loss, I imagine I will have met my goal weight for surgery by the time I have my first visit with the dietitian. This both delights and worries me, as I am not sure how they will take this information. I was told during the meeting with the senior doctor, that once I lost the weight, I would simply call up the clinic to tell them and I would get my surgery date some days later via email. However, the emails I received from the clinic prior to these meetings thus far have confused me, as they don't seem to suggest the same thing. Here's the list of requirements that I am still supposed to meet besides the upcoming appointments I have listed above: Lose at least 8%-12% of what I weighed the first time I visited the clinic and maintain that weight loss until the day of surgery. I need to have regular conversations (via meetings with a dietitian at the clinic or telephone) with approx. 4 week intervals to discuss: Agreements and goals for progress and weight loss Dietary changes Exercise Smoking and drinking alcohol Medical diseases Then, it says: after 3-6 months, I am to have a status interview and then a team of specialists will assess whether I can be offered an operation. 🤔 I guess what I am confused about is that I thought I was already offered the operation, but just needed to lose the required weight before I could get a date! Furthermore, if I lose the weight before my first meeting with the dietitian, would I really need to have so many more meetings after that? Eh, I guess I will make that phone call once I reach my goal weight to find out where I go from there. I am hoping it's as easy as the senior doctor said it would be during our meeting! Anyways, that's enough from me for now. I'm Steph! I recently joined the FB group and ended up finding my way onto the website. I look forward to writing with you all more in the future! Good luck, everyone! If anyone else has experienced a similar situation in the Scandinavian countries, I would love to hear what clarification you guys had gotten! And sorry if I sound totally spoiled -- I know the US insurance companies require a lot more in order to cover the operation! 🙈 -
January 2020 Surgery Date
ResaRoo replied to Krimsonbutterflies's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m having surgery in 2 weeks (February), and wondered if I could ask you guys who have just had your surgeries as few questions... 1. My doctor says I can likely be back to work in 7-10 days. I’ve had my gallbladder removed and I felt like I was ready to head back to work after 3 days. Is 7-10 days after realistic? (I teach kindergarten, but can head to the washroom when needed and avoid lifting for the first few weeks as I have a full time EA this year). 2. Did your cravings drop after surgery? I’m 1 week in to my 3 week pre-op and not craving sugary foods. I think maybe because the protein drinks are sweet. But the cravings for savoury things is intense (cracker and cheese, steak, etc). I’m seasoning my roasted veggies and it helps a little. But when you have to make 3 meals/day for your family and see and smell the food, it doesn’t help much. -

Anyone else NOT have a pre-op diet?? Mine is day before only. 🤷🏻♀️
Anki replied to newchange16's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
At my first meeting with the bariatric surgery program (12/17/19) I asked about the pre-op diet. I was told that the latest research shows that liquid fasting for 1-2 weeks prior to surgery does not benefit the patient, but actually causes distress, so they no longer require it as of a few years ago. For the pre-surgery diet, they now require that for 2 weeks, you have one small meal a day, and the rest is liquids. I was so happy to hear that because a month seems like a REALLY long time to be on liquids only (if you have to do liquids for 2 weeks pre-surgery and 2 weeks post-surgery. -

74 and had SADI procedure Dec 31 2019! Doing fine -
I was sleeved may 15th 2017. I was pretty active my first year post-op, but then life got busy with 2 new grand babies and traveling for work. I hit my goal weight about 8 months post op and I am usually within 10 lbs of my goal weight since then. I am currently about 12 pounds above where I want to be mostly because I am having a hard time adjusting to not being able to run. I had knee surgery 2 months ago and I am still having pain. I need to nip this now and cut back on calories until I can figure out where I need to be with less exercise.

Weight Loss on Pre-Op Diet
biginjapan replied to ResaRoo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, it's normal (although everyone is different). I also find that the heavier a person is, the more they lose on these types of diets. I've noticed this not only on sites like this, but also when I was a part of weight watchers. People who were morbidly obese had very large drops of weight on any kind of restricted diet (10 pound or more a week), where as that would be both unusual and alarming for anyone who was within a normal BMI range. The first time I did this I lost 21 pounds in 21 days during my pre-op diet (of course it was not one pound a day, it stalled and dropped over 3-5 days usually, but the end result was this). I'll be starting my pre-op for my revision surgery in February, so hopefully I can get similar numbers. -
MINI GASTRIC BYPASS AND ACID REFLUX
MarinaGirl replied to NYCGAL000's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I had MGB in TJ in April 2017 and it resolved my acid reflux, which was very severe pre-op. Life was great, lost a lot of weight, but 10 months post-bypass I developed bile reflux. I knew it was this because I would throw up greenish-yellow liquid, and then it was confirmed via EGD, along with Barrett’s Esophagus. My gastroenterologist and PCP were unfamiliar with bile reflux and did not know how to treat it, no medicines they recommended helped, but I found a great out-of-state bariatric surgeon (who also specializes in complex revisions) who was able to treat me. In July 2018, he repaired a hiatal hernia and performed a Nissen Fundoplication on me and since then I’ve had zero acid or bile reflux issues, which have been confirmed via EGD (2 of them post-op). He considered revising me to RNY but during surgery he was able to do some magic so that I didn’t need that extra procedure. And as the final step in my weight loss journey, I’m scheduled for plastic surgery in mid-Feb 2020. -

Hello surgery 12/10/19. Surgery weight was 252, this morning I am at 223.2lbs. So, a weight loss of 28.8. When I went in for my first post op I was at 262 but believe it was the actual IV fluids and swelling. I can tell a big difference in my face and my clothing I was wearing 22 now in a 16. I feel great! -

February 2019 weight loss buds

Sooooo good to hear from you! CONGRATS on losing 100 pounds!!! Omg, that’s such a HUGE milestone, and I’m happy to see you happy with it. Lol, I’d be careful about picking out too much in the way of clothing right now, because you’re gonna be shocked at how much difference the “last” 20-25 pounds will make in your bod. For example, here is my bod (5’7”, 51yo) at a weight of 163, vs 138, which is exactly 25 pounds. The difference is I was a tight size 10 at 163 in September and comfortable fit size 6 at 138. In fact, some of my size 6s are somewhat loose. I feel like a look great and healthy at both weights, but I still have that dress from this fall and it hangs off of me and I can’t wear it now. Finally gave it to my daughter who is a size 12 and she wears it. -
February 2019 weight loss buds
ldawn replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey everyone! I haven’t posted in a little while. So my surgaversary is feb 5. I consider my starting weight to be my weight the day I started the 2 week pre op diet. I have been a slow loser from the beginning and it was emotionally very hard to see the people on here losing 10-15 pounds a month when I was barely losing 6 pounds most months. I think I only had 2 or 3 months where I lost 10 + pounds. This is why they say don’t compare yourself to others. The mental toll can be quite high. I had to extend my goal twice because I did t make it. So my starting weight was 268 and dammit today I hit 168!!!!!!! I’m 5’3” so I would like to lose 25-30 more pounds. I now only weigh myself once a week sometimes every other week. I still take measurements at least once a month (was every other week until November when I was able to let my mental issues with weight loss go). I have lost 16 inches off my natural waist, 6” off my thigh, 4” off my bicep, 2” off my calf, and 2” off my neck. I don’t have measurement of my chest because I always measured before I got dressed and ‘the girls’ weren’t where they were supposed to be located for measuring. But I have gone from a 44DD bra with an extender to a 40DD. But actually I’m between a D and a DD at the moment which is very frustrating. I have never felt a lot of restriction. Always thought I could eat more than I should be able to. That makes me watch my food a lot. There are days where I eat more than I should but I’m aware of it and adjust the rest of my day accordingly. Calorie counts on menus is the best thing for me. It definitely pushes me to healthier options. When I eat out I always get 2-3 meals out of it. I’m cooking more than I used to and bringing my lunch to work. Sodas no longer have a hold on me. I do occasionally have one but it’s one of those 8oz cans every 2-3 weeks. I find myself looking at clothes often now. I have a cruise in June and have been picking up a few things here and there off clearance racks. I’ve been buying a size 10 for the cruise which technically fits now, but will look better by then. I signed up for StitchFix. Thought it would be fun to let someone send me clothes and it may open my eyes to new styles. My hair is still growing back. I lost about a third of my hair. It’s now about 3 1/2 inches long so it doesn’t stand straight up anymore. I have never gotten back to normal bowel movements. Anyone else have this issue? Almost diarrhea since surgery. No urgency or anything like that just not normal. Everyone on here looks amazing! I’m so proud of all of us. And to November11 girl you are killing it! You look great. DrSchaffner take measurements!!! And the pre op diet is really hard the first couple of days but then you realize you can totally do it. Good luck and keep us informed of your progress. -
February 2019 weight loss buds
Sheribear68 replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
This is so interesting. I thought i was in maintenance at 148-152, then suddenly dropped 10 more pounds and dropping about 1-1.5 pounds/week again. Surely this will stop within a few weeks, but the daily calorie struggle is real. As far as googling celebs, I recently found myself checking out that one picture of Jennifer Anniston and noticing that my body is probably smaller than hers (albeit surely with much more sags and wrinkles) This reality completely blew me away and I’m still trying to digest the fact that I’m wearing a size 6 now. Even a couple of weeks ago I called myself a 6/8, but even my newer size 8’s (the ones that ran small for 8) are getting baggier. Just for kicks, I tried on some size 4 Ann Taylor pants (bc that brand runs a bit large) and they fit like a glove. Didn’t buy them (because I never pay retail) but it was weird to see my bod fit in size 4 anything. -
Intermittent Fasting Daily Menu/Results/Accountability
Apple1 replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Hi @FluffyChix. It is so great to see you are still here helping people and you have reached your goal weight!!! Life got busy for me and I sort of dropped off the map for the past year and a half. I decided I should come back and see how some of my surgery pals are doing and hang around for some support and accountability. I find being almost three years out that I am able to keep my bounce weight in a 10-15 lbs range. I am usually in the 150-160 range, but this winter and holiday season I saw 165 on the scale. I have tightened up my diet and I always eat in an 8 hour window with a 16 hr fast. I can't run like I used to because of knee pain so I have been sticking to walking the past 6 months. I would like to keep my weight closer to the 150 end because I am so aware of how easy it would be to end up on that slippery slope. It is great to be here again and I am looking forward to making new friends. -
Hi everyone! Im a sleever who achieved goal weight 9 months post op. Im currently under goal but would like to loose another 10lbs.. but thats not the point of this post! Love to hear from anyone who has ran a marathon, im aiming for a 4 hour goal time and currently running 5 days a week and increasing distance by 10%. No injuries yet (except my currently broken wrist from my downhill mountainbike hobby!). Im a plant based runner who is more or less a veggie. I do not eat processed foods - and by processed i mean food with anything on the label that is not an actual food. No ****. I live in New Zealand, so thankfully we eat very differently here and this has been easy. Any tips from experienced runners very welcome. I have an excellent baseline of fitness as I've been running since 6 weeks post op and credit it with my success.

Rapid weight gain following Gastric Bypass 10 months ago
yesno789 posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi all, I am a 30 year old male. I previously had a gastric sleeve surgery 5 years agobut due to the massive regain of weight, I had a revision gastric bypass in February 2019. Anyways, since my lowest recorded weight and initial weight loss success in June 2019, I have since gained 7kg to date and feel like I gaining 1-2kg a week. Specifically, I have regained 6 kg since early Dec 2019 to date. Over the past 3 weeks, I have regained at least a 1kg a week. I feel like I can eat just as much, if not more, then my first gastric sleeve surgery 5 years ago. I know that the bypass is a tool only, but I am shocked in the amount I can eat and want to eat. I can easily eat a plate of pasta or a whole wrap with chips from KFC (I know I should be eating healthy and not these type of foods, but it is easier said than done!). On a normal day, I drink at least 5 cans of sugar free coke zero and at least a box of paddlepop icecream. I'm super addicted to sweet and sugary food and I know this is the issue. My issue is I pretty much have to eat sweet sugary food. Luckily and thankfully, I am not diabetic (not that I know of anyways!) I've read stories of people who were much bigger than me who initially had the surgery who now eat a few bites and get full and they don't really ever feel like icecream and other sugary food. Yet I am always hungry and even after I eat food, I still crave sugary food. My old workmate who had the gastric sleeve never used to eat! They were never hungry or craved anything, yet I am completely the opposite. Anyways, my question is can anyone on here following their gastric bypass surgery still eat a plate of food or even close to? I just can't comprehend how following 2 surgeries without any complications (thankfully ) I still am able to eat so much food. Look forward to hearing from anyone. -
Cheated and disgusted
AZhiker replied to Celeste kimberly's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You will have some slips. There are simply times when temptation and opportunity, combined with hunger/stress are too much. But the key is to learn from the experience. If you can look back and really examine what happened, it can help you set up a plan for the next time. For example, I have learned to ALWAYS carry a protein shake with me, just in case I get stuck somewhere late, or am feeling overwhelming hunger that is going to cause me to dive into some kind of food I will regret later. Another example - When I first started riding longer distances on my bike, I would finish feeling very thirsty and craving salt. This led to a couple of drive through french fry attacks, which made me sick both times. But I learned that it was salt I was craving, so found some electrolyte replacement to use during my rides, and it has never happened since. There are all kinds of little behavioral hacks you can initiate to keep you from slipping up, but the key is to learn, learn, learn, and then devise a plan. Recently I read that a bad habit cannot be broken without a replacement good behavior. You can't just leave a void. An example of that might be to take a little short walk instead of eating, when feeling emotional stress or frustration. This really works for me. Instead of stewing over something and eating for emotional comfort, I get outside and just walk for 10 minutes. That's all it takes. I was the "perfect" WLS patient for 6 months! Never cheated. But as maintenance approached, anxiety increased. New foods needed to be added to keep from losing weight. I slipped up quite a few times, but I have learned from every experience and I feel I am much stronger now for it. I've learned so many techniques and have a lot more "food resilience" now. I am in more control and make better choices when confronted with temptation. I never would have learned these things without the mistakes. Failure is an opportunity to learn and improve - not to beat yourself up. -

Thanks to all who are continuing to share your status. One of these days I'll post a side by side before and after photo. I'm loving all the photos so keep sharing. My "maintenance" phase includes a Premier Protein shake for my breakfast during my commute to work; either Chili, string cheese, tortilla chips and pimento cheese dip, avocado toast, or ham and cheese slices for lunch; and then chicken, eggs, or beef for dinner. As you can see, my vegetables are severely lacking (as they have been my whole life). I am focused on getting in my liquids each day, but my recent dizzy spells when I stand up remind me I need to drink waaaay more water. My biggest issue right now is that my sweet tooth has come back in full force and am snacking on too much chocolate (think Hershey Kisses). I'm at a stable 150 lbs and I like the way I look so I'm very happy overall. I am scheduled for a breast reduction and possible panulectomy in October (the panulactomy will depend on whether insurance pays for it). I'm grateful--so very grateful--that I survived the surgery well and am wearing size mediums in tops and size 10 in pants. I'm just in a really, really good place right now! -

I am 5 pounds away from hitting the 100 pound list mark. I had horrible pain I. My knees, hands, elbows and feet from arthritis. I was taking tumeric with bioperine and it worked amazing well for inflammation. now that I am nearly 100 pounds down, I don’t even need the turmeric anymore! i t just got cold where I live the past few days. I do feel a little achy in my knees now but nowhere near what it used to be. I am sure that my knees are damaged from carrying so much weight around though. I truly think that I was close to needing one knee replaced before losing the weight. I don’t feel that way anymore. while you are trying to lose, do yourself a favor and try the turmeric. Just be sure that it has at least 10 mg of bioperine ( black pepper) in it and is 95% curcuminoids. Give it a week ir two of taking daily and you will be amazed what a simple spice can do for inflammation Good luck on your journey!! -

Uomograsso replied to lbugher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I started in July 2019 with diet & exercise. My weight then was 427 lbs. I couldn't stand for more than 10 minutes before my ankles and legs started hurting. My right hip was also in almost constant pain. My doctor wanted me to lose enough weight before surgery to get my BMI down to 50. I started tracking calories and exercising 4 to 5 days a week for 30 minutes. Once I started losing weight everything started to feel better. I had my surgery on January 16 and as of today I have lost 103 lbs, 80 prior to surgery, 11 lbs during one week liquid pre-op diet and now 12 lbs one week after surgery. My pain is 1000% better. I started with water aerobics and after a month of that moved to doing recumbent bike, then onto elliptical trainer. Start slow doing what you can and try to increase every week. As you get in better shape and lose weight it will get even better. -
