Sleeved Wednesday, 10/3/12....
bkz3 replied to UTGal99's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was just sleeved on Tuesday 10/2, came home yesterday. It makes such a difference to be able to recover at home! I've been feeling much better at home, but let it go a little too long today between taking my pain meds, won't do that again I guess. But it's not really my incision sites that are sore, it's all my stomach muscles around that, they feel so tight. I'm also having trouble getting my gas bubbles moving sometimes, sounds like the heating pad is the answer, I'm gonna have to try that! I had a little trouble at first getting in my liquids in the hospital, scared to drink too much, was having some nausea, etc. But I think my nausea was caused by my own nerves. =) Just continuing to sip away and hope I get enough in. Congrats to all the new sleevers, here's to becoming part of the 'losers club"! P.S. I had to do that swallow/leak test too, and that clear liquid did not taste good, and they had me standing upright first on the table and then had to lay me flat, that was not a fun "ride" to take on that machine the morning after my surgery and feeling nauseous, but I know it was a necessary test! -
I just can't get started on the pre-op liquid diet. I keep cheating by noon.

#1 - Perhaps, since you are self pay you can find another doctor to do the surgery. But, no matter what dr you go to I heard it is safer if you do loose some weight prior to the surgery (just what I have gleamed from the boards - I am sure someone can explain why better). I am on day 3 of my pre-op and its killing me. However a couple of tricks that my dr told me was to take One Chromium Picolinate 400 mcg per day can be taken for fat-burning purposes. One Metamucil capsule can be taken at 10:00 am and one at 3:00 pm for hunger pangs My PCP also prescribed Phentermine (15mg) just to help take the edge off. I've also found if I drink LOTS of Water it helps. Good luck to you, I know you can do this -
New Jersey Anyone?
Bodacious Barbie replied to WinningLoser's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Got approval letter yesterday from insurance co. Pre-Opt exam and appointment to sign papers is scheduled for this Friday with Dr. Goldstein. I am so excited!!!!!! Is a June surgery date realistic, or do you think its more likely to be scheduled for July? No date is too soon as far as I'm concerned. I'm ready to get this show on the road. Started this process January 4, 2011, 6 months later I'm more than anxious. Jerseygirl is it true Goldstein only requires a 1 day liquid, and day of surgery fast? I'm 264 lbs. I'm a little nervous about only losing 4 of the recommended 10 lbs pre-surgery. Hope it is not a problem when I see him Friday. My goal weight is 135, but depending on how I look and what size clothes I wear, I can be happy at 150 lbs. I'm 5'8" and dont want to look like a bobble head. -
Do you tell your kids about having LBS?
MissMom24 replied to Blund's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My kids were 14, 10, 7 & 4...I did not tell them anything, just that I was tired and needed to rest. You should be fine without them knowing. Just tell them that you need to rest. -

Just went to dr goldsteins seminar today, but yes he only does one day pre op liquid diet, 7-10 post op liquid, another week of mush, and then he said by one month out you're on whole foods. I was really impressed by him at the seminar, feeling very good about choosing him! First appt is the 14th, got a journey ahead of me, at least 3 months! -
I've had this pressure feeling going up and down my esophagus the last several hours and minor pain in the center of me back. I don't have a clue how to fix this. I was banded last month and the doc has me back on solid foods and im struggling with enough and too much. My next appt is Jan 10. Please advise if you can thx.

Letter To Appeals Dept At Insurance Company
nikkiluv replied to nikkiluv's topic in Insurance & Financing
Thanks for all the help!! I am anxiously awaiting to go to the first seminar. My insurance company recently implimented some new guidelines that do not have a "criteria"" to meet. Its all case by case now. When I called the insurance company they told me that they just put this in place within the last 2 months. I am unsure if they require a personal letter but if they do I will be sure to take all of this advice and add it. The addition of how this will benefit my life, prevent future obesity related diseases and should be used as a tool are all very powerful things to include. I was wondering if I should also include that my husband has only been on the job for 6 years and we have a long time with this policy should be included. I assume if they are aware that it would make them benefit in the long run by not having to pay for other obesity related issues it would sway them. I also feel like because my BMI is only 39 that gaining the 8-10 pounds to make it a 40 BMI would not be beneficial.I am hoping not to have to fight it. Thanks again! -
Thank you for all the responses, I still am looking at getting the Lap band, I want a lifetime of weight loss. But i have been out of control for so long that my dr put me on Phentermine for 11 weeks. He said no more then that. It hasn't given me the energy everyone talks about, maybe insomnia lol, but just dry mouth and sweaty palms, no high blood pressure yet. I just need it to curve the appetite. I now can actually eat a real serving and be satisfied. I am hoping this will help me into the band easily. I have been workin my a$$ off since orientation, and it has showed, but slowly i stoped loosing and my munchies were getting worse then ever, plus im doing the healthy ways class. I hope one day to be able to say I have kept my weight off for 10 yrs:) That is my ultimate goal and we will all get there!

Disclaimer: I've never been a person who paid much attention to other people's opinion of me or my actions. I did tell a few people of my decision prior to banding and now tell anyone who asks. The prebanding reactions were mixed but the post banding reactions have all been positive (as in I'm proud of you for taking decisive action). I think most people (unless they've been living under a rock for the past 5 years) realize that weight loss success rates are somewhere between 1-10% without medical intervention. The ones who had negative reactions were mostly due to the fact they didn't understand the lap band procedure is not the gastric bypass procedure. Once I explained the difference, there were even some with less than 40 lbs to lose who were wondering if they could do it because they haven't been able to take the weight off on their own. I have been banded just shy of 6 months now and by some standards, am a slow loser. I'm OK with it but the first 3 months were really tough and I had my doubts. What I know now is that everyone loses at their own pace and not to compare myself to others who lose faster. If I had the chance to go back and reconsider, I would do it all over again.

Birth Control on Surgery Date?
dolphanatic22 replied to megster27's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I stopped mine 2 weeks before surgery because it increases chances of blood clots, however the surgeon said it was not necessary to stop...my pcp just recommended it since I was concerned about blood clots. I got married 2 weeks after surgery so per my surgeon, I started bc 10 days after surg and used condoms as well since its not good to get pregnant within 18 mos of banding. I hope this helps. Good luck in surgery. I hope you will love your new life when you are done like I do! -
Learning I love to hike in winter. Still searching for missing person. I've logged 36 miles plus in less than a week! I've gained 3 lbs but whatever. I'm hiking some stiff terrain and my clothing and hiking wear is adding all of 10 lbs.

I had my sleeve mid-October and have lost about a pound a day since surgery. I'm happy with those results, however I know others that have lost 15-20 lbs 7-10 days out. I'm just curious to see what the norm is. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Currently going through this now. I had surgery 10/10 and I honestly don't feel the weight is falling off like I hoped. I'm a part of the Bariatric surgery community on Instagram so I get a lot of progress updates from people who have similar surgery dates. I feel like I'm behind the rest of the class. People keep telling me not give up and keep my working hard. Honestly at times I have "buyer's remorse" and feel having surgery was a waste. It is extremely difficult to see the light at end of the tunnel.

Hunger Pain or Band Pain ?
kimmom replied to kimmom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was looking back at previous posts and found this , thought I would say that I am on day 10 and the gas pain is so intense, I am shocked I thought it would be better and yes I do have a pain just below my breast bone, it hurts. I went to the Dr today to have my stiches removed, the only one at the office was the surgen that does gastric bypass and he didnt seem very concerned but I dont see much on the boards about gas pain that far after surgery. Thanks for the replys Kim -
I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this after getting lapband surgery. My doctor had set expectations w/me that I should not expect to get off any of my meds right away... that it would take time to lose weight and then retest and adjust medicines (maybe in 6 months or so). Well, for the past few days I have felt very tired and yesterday I was feeling a little dizzy as I was trying to get some housework done. It occurred to me that this could be a sign of low blood pressure and I hadn't tested mine for awhile so I took it and it was 88/65! Now, normally I am around 140/90 even with taking 60mg of lisinopril (high bp med) per day. Seems like every time I go in, they up my dose because they could just never get it to stay down. So, I am blown away by the drastic drop. This morning, I decided to just test my BP before taking my med and it was 113/79 so I skipped my med today (my doctor did say this was OK if I got a low reading). I retested a couple more times and it is staying in the healthy range w/no med. Of course, I am ecstatic if this really means my high blood pressure has already been cured by the lapband, but its just so hard for me to believe. I've been on high bp meds for over 10 years and I had borderline high bp when I was a teenager. I'm kind of in disbelief that it could just go away like that. I have been on many many diets before and my high bp never just went away. So, I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this? And, a part of me is wondering if it could have something to do w/some of the other things I've given up... like artificial sweeteners, caffeine, etc.

What should I expect in the coming months???
raprile posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am beginning my journey on Monday, September 15 for the initial seminar. My insurance covers the surgery so I'm not too worried about that aspect...but I am concerned about denial. What are some of the reasons dr's deny patients?? Also, how long does the process usually take from seminar to surgery day? I'm going to be using a doctor that is 1 1/2 - 2 hours away from where I live and with a 10 month old, my husband and I both in school...and no reliable sitter...and then the cost of gas (ugh!)...how many visits and what kind of visits will I need to attend pre-op. I just need some reassurance...getting kind of worried now:scared2: And I haven't even started yet! -

Any 19 year olds that have been approved
DanBar posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just curious as to how hard it was to get approved at 18/19? Thanks! -
I was graduated to stage 3 diet today (RNY on 1/19) for dinner around 630 I had 1/2 cup mashed potatoes (didn't eat it all, maybe a little less than half) and 1/4 cup applesauce (ate most of it) I felt like I had a ball in my esophagus for an hour and a half after I ate. At 45 minutes post meal I had a few small sips of Water. Now I have a stomach ache. A legit bellyache like I would have had pre op if I ate too much... What can I do? I'm so uncomfortable. Gas-x strips aren't working. I have Tums but I think they have real sugar in them (dextrose and sucrose) - 2 tablets have 2g sugars. Will they make me feel worse? I'm in tears, been laying in bed with the heating pad for the last hour and a half. Thanks!!

Where Decembers Bandsters?
julie2 replied to pfrance's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey everyone! I'm being banded on December 19, I've already been on the pre-op diet for 7 days and I've lost 7lbs. I'm getting super scared about surgery! -
What is the two week diet right before surg???
RestlessMonkey replied to emtsusieq's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Frankly I'm glad my doc required the "crazy" liquid diet rather than 10%...for a 250 pound person that would be 25 pounds, for me over 40. It's way harder to lose 40 pounds than to follow a strict diet for a week or two, IMHO. -
What is the two week diet right before surg???
Lady Lap Band replied to emtsusieq's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
every dr.'s requirments are different. Mine does not make you go on some crazy liquid diet 2 weeks before to reduce the liver. They ask that you loose 10% of your body weight, for me that was 10-15lbs prior to surgery to shrink the liver. -
I'm on my 2nd day of 2 weeks liquid/steamed veg pre-op diet and am wondering whether I'm going to be able to work fine during it, and then in the 10 days or so afterward when I'm still on liquids. For example, am I going to feel dizzy going out for a walk after a while on this?

Where Decembers Bandsters?
ladyracer replied to pfrance's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello everyone, My original surgery date was 12/19 but it got postponed because my white blood cell count was too high. I have been fighting an upper respiratory infection for about a month prior to my surgery. They rescheduled it for the 29th. My doctor acted like he still didn't want to do the surgery. Anyway, I told him that I felt great and that we should proceed. I really would have been disappointing had he wanted to reschedule again, I was already undressed and in that wonderful hospital gown and I was so ready to get it done and over with. I can't say that it has been a walk in the park, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. My surgery was at 10:30 and I was home by 3. That day I thought I was going to die from the gas pain. It had settled in my middle back and my left breast. The next day was when I thought I had been kicked by a mule, still this wasn't as bad as the gas pain. It has been five days since surgery, and I am just now starting to feel a little hungry. I have my followup visit on 1/7, I hope that I can start mushies. The liquid diet sucks and there isn't much variety, plus I don't have any energy doing the liquid diet. Anyway, I am just taking it one day at a time. I feel that I have over the first big obstacle. Happy New Year to everyone. -
How is your weight loss going?
KristenLe replied to mwlsjmom4's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It depends on your starting weight. It is not typical to lose 15-20 lbs only 7-10 days out. I don't think there's a norm. Everyone is different. Don't compare yourself to others - it'll drive you crazy! Congrats on your loss so far - that's awesome.
