    Musings On Monday

Just a few thoughts on a Monday: It is hotter than hell in Texas. I haven't seen rain in months. My sister in law got married Saturday at the beach with a poolside reception. Her cake melted. I don't do well with mimosas. I don't do well with shrimp. My Aloe Vera plant helps my sunburn. Unlike BG, I still weigh more than my husband, but not for long. My mom has one more week of brain radiation and then we'll go from there. Cancer sucks. Sometimes coming to work is a relief when your everyday life is hectic. I hate back to school clothes shopping for my 16 year old daughter. If anyone is looking for a great charity, consider the Make A Wish Foundation. Milky Way bars (the small bite-size ones) go down just fine. I don't miss Diet Coke anymore. It doesn't taste as good as it once did. I can take my pants off without unbuttoning them. I want to win the lottery soon. Has Bashful had a date yet with "Hot Eric"?:cursing: I need another fill soon. I have a great family. DD1 left her kitty with me to babysit while she went to Tennessee and now I won't give her back. We've bonded. Have a great week everyone. Lauraq

    Question About Fills

Oh wow I did not even think of that. I see him next week hopefully he will take some out if needed. Thank you so much

Hey All! I have been reading this blog for several weeks...since I decided not to do the band. I have been so encouraged and have really found myself being excited to have the surgery. I feel like I'm mourning the loss of the big portions of dessert I like to eat but I know it's for the best. I'll keep you updated along my journey!! Thanks for listening!!
  4. Welcome Chevy and congrats on both your surgery and upcoming wedding. So many exciting things lie ahead for you! How are you doing thus far? I'm 4 weeks post op
  5. I had paid near my port (left side) for several weeks. If it is really bothering you, do not hesitate to call your doctor.
  6. You are doing FANTASTIC! I think there is a general misconception that the weight will "simply melt off in enormous quantities" like in gastric bypass. It doesn't. Period. We are considered a success when we loose 1-2 lbs a week. You selected banding, which is MUCH healthier in the long run. And statistics have shown that while GB's will loose faster in the beginning, by year 3, bandsters have caught up AND are more successful at keeping the weight off long term. Plus we get the added advantages of: 1) No digestive issues - we do not loose any of our stomach! 2) We can have 'tune-ups' or a fill. GB have no such recourse. 3) Band is adjustable - no "one size fits all". It can be unfilled if necessary and re-filled as needed. 4) We learn to eat correctly long term as we journey to the Green Zone and IF WE CHOOSE to comply with our required eating plans, have a greater chance of long term success than GB's My Gastroenterologist told me he wanted to tell people who wanted GB to consider the number of new cases he got each year of people who had had GB and now were in serious or life threatening gastric situations (like cancer) and who seriously complicated his ability to help them. He was totally anti bypass, but very supportive of LapBand. All this to say, give yourself a break - you're doing fabulous!
  7. i haven't had surgery so i probably don't know what i'm talking about, but maybe your stomach is still quite swollen and tender at this stage? plus you had hernia repair which might be tender too. last year i had two surgeries (not in my abdomen) and i was on oxycodone every four hours for a week!
  8. This is me the night before surgery all the way up til tonight, 7 weeks post op.
  9. I kind of knew I would have gained weight since last months weigh in due to me quitting smoking 3 weeks ago....gained 7 lbs. But they did say because I just ate and it was a evening appointment and water retention can be part of those lbs. They scheduled my last 2 appointments for September and October so looks like surgery may be in November
  10. I was just banded last week and have lost since then. I came into the banding process since I do know how to lose weight. I lost 102 pounds in 2 years but could not keep it all off. I have found through TOPS ( Take Off Pounds Sensibly) how to gradually lose and maintain weight in the long run. I was banded because even with working out 5-7 hours a week and eating reasonably I put back on 35 pounds and could not get my control back. I can tell you that losing 1-2 pounds a week is much easier on your system and it does not cause skin sagging or massive hair loss. I have a friend who had GB in November and has lost over 80 pounds but her her hair is falling out and she looks 10 years older. So be patient... it is worth waiting for!!
  11. I am one week post op today. I have not had any nausea till I took my chewable vitamins this morning. I took them about an hour after my shake if this continues I will not be able to take them! Yuk. I hate feeling sick my pain level has been very little, haven't taken pain meds since my first day home. I do have some pain in my left lower back and my left side , maybe still gas? No pain while sitting only when I'm walking around the house
  12. I just asked my surgeon last week what future test will I get or need. He told me on my first year band anniversary (July 25, 2013) I will have a full panel blood work and xrays. I already had blood work done from my own PCP 2 weeks ago, I didn't want to wait a year for blood work. I will repeat the same bloodwork in July. **Note, if I had concerns about my band prior to a year I would address it with my surgeon so he could take precautions***
  13. I'm feeling great. Still have some gas pains, but not nearly as bad as Friday/Saturday. Using a heat pad, really helped with the gas pains. I have a follow-up appointment with my surgeon this afternoon and then I can start on my Protein shakes, which I'm really looking forward to. The incisions are not as sore as I thought they would be. A friend of mine that had the surgery a few months ago made me so worried about the pain, but it hasn't been bad at all. I think a lot of it is frame of mind too. My reasons for having the surgery is to be healthier and if that means being sore for a few days/a few weeks, I'm fine with that. I know that any discomfort will pass and I'll come out of this a healthier person. I hope everyone banded is feeling good and to those waiting Good Luck!!

    Post-Op!

Congrats to you on your weight loss so far...it sounds like you are doing great!! I had port pain a few weeks after surgery also, but it went away shortly. I love myfitnesspal also. I wish I would have known about it when I had my surgery. It definitely keeps me accountable for bad choices that I make.
  15. I have my 1 week post-op apt today and I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts about the questions I should be sure to ask or the issues we should be sure to cover. Personally, my 3 concerns are: -what can I eat next? hahahahaha -what's with these stitches sticking out of my incisions (were supposed to be all inside, so what to do about them - they are pokey) -PORT PAIN! But what else do we need to cover??????

    2 days post op

Hang in there all of you new bandsters...it will get better...the first couple of weeks are kinda tough....but once the sorness has left you will feel much better...
  17. I was in the same boat as you. So many tried to push me to get Bypass, but I decided what was best for me and got the Lap Band. I think the most important thing to remember is that it is YOUR decision and that the Lap Band isn't a fix all. It's a tool to help us achieve what all of us have struggled so long with, to lose weight. My Nut put it best I think. She said that I had to make the choice of using this tool to my advantage, or letting the tool use me. I can tell you from the other side, I am 1 week post-op, that I am so happy with my decision and would make the same one again and again. Good Luck!
  18. Thanks for the info. I've been post-op for 8 weeks, lost 15pound but I've benne on a plateau for the last 4 weeks. What is weird with me is that my body is changing alot, I just can't wear my old pants they would fall down on me, but on a scale my weight asen't change in the last 4 weeks???? is this normal or Im crazy? Im going for my second fill this week, because I don't feel enough restriction. Julie
  19. thanks for explaining this... I had my surgery done nearly 2 weeks ago at murdoch and lost 6.5 kilos in this time! was going sometimes a kilo a day or 2 kilos a day and it was insane and thought it had to stop soon and it is... sometimes 500 grams and today 300 grams but its ok im still goin down and im happy with the results... How much has everyone lost in a week the average... i got told to expect .5kg but i dunno
  20. I can't speak to the port pain issue because I haven't had any but as far as the spinning goes, I would call the doctors office and ask again, explaining exactly what you are doing. My doc had no restrictions after two weeks but what you are describing seems pretty extreme, You might want to stick to sitting and pedaling for a while. A good rule of thumb is if it hurts don't do it. (at least until you are fully healed.) I lost 14 pounds the first week and lost 2 in the next two weeks, it is frustrating. I am eating between 700 and 900 calories and burning nearly that many on my workouts (Curves workout and walking 45 minutes a day) It seems like I should be losing more but I can tell my body is changing, My pre-op pants are a joke now. they pretty much fall down so I've had to move to two sizes smaller so I look at least presentable for work. Everyone tells me that I am melting away. Try not to dwell on the scales (I know how hard that is, too) I am going to try to get in a few more calories when I can start meats tomorrow. I hope that pumping it up to 1000-1200 calories will kickstart the losing again. Hang in there. Once your are healed and get some fills you will be losing plenty.

    Define "pre-op diet"

I think it can be either or both, so you'd probably want/need to clarify if unsure in a specific post. My insurance requires a 6 month physician supervised diet and exercise plan. So that is, of course, pre-op. Some people might call that a pre-op diet in that it's pre-op and a diet. LOL I think most of the time, it seems people are taking about the more restrictive eating sanctions that are imposed for 1-2 weeks prior to surgery. For many, it's a liquid diet but also can be a low-carb or a low-calorie. Surgeons seem to vary greatly on this.

    Waiting for Approval

Good luck - I will also cross my fingers for you!! I am in the same boat. Been almost 3 weeks for me and I am still waiting. this by far has been the hardest thing yet to do. And I was a smoker - had to quit.
  23. I'm seven weeks post op and I have been living in a variety of maxi dresses! I bought several on clearance at "Ross" before surgery. I wear scrubs to work and have already gone down one size. I happily pull those draw strings tighter each week. I did have to buy a pack of panties and wearing the "as seen on tv" bras that someone mentioned above, or sports bra. I figured between the maxi dresses and scrubs, I could go for a while before having to buy new clothes. Trying to extend the budget as long as I can. Although, I can hardly wait to go shopping and really like it in the months to come!
  24. 7 weeks post op and I've only been buying dresses (except for a smaller bra and pack of panties). We were warned at our pre op class to be prepared for nothing to fit for long; they said you could get something on Monday and it would be too big on Wednesday. I figured dresses would be more forgiving. They might end up fitting really loose, but they probably won't fall off!
  25. I stalled from week 5-7 it was horrible! But also very normal... No worries Surgery 7/25/12
