What kind of surgery? I'm astounded (although delighted for you) that this can be outpatient. I'm a Lap gastric bypass and I will be in for 2-3 nights. Sent from my SM-G950U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

@LayersofBea. I'm December 8th too, but for gastric bypass. Not scared of surgery. Not scared of recovery. Terrified that I won't be tough enough to not feel deprived and sorry for myself about 3 months into this. So scared I'm going to fail at this too. However, my therapist reminded me that I've researched the heck out of this, worked hard on the 10 habits, set up my kitchen and pantry to support me and whole family with healthy eating, and spent the last 6 months preparing mentally and emotionally (in addition to physical prep). How about the rest of you who are close? What are you feeling? Sent from my SM-G950U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Protein Intake Help lactose allergy

I'm mixing vega sport plant based protein powder in yogurt and it's good. You can mix it into Ripple milk for added protein (higher protein plant based milk) they also make a yogurt. I find Greek yogurt with digestive enzymes doesn't upset my dairy intolerance. As long as it's low sugar. Oikos triple zero has been good. Take chewable digestive enzymes and that helps a lot too. Also the right whey protein shouldn't cause stomach upset. I've used PEScience select and not had issues. https://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/5-gastric-bypass-surgery-forums/
  4. Does anyone know if Molina/medicaid pays for a tummy tuck after doing the gastric bypass? Sent from my G60 using BariatricPal mobile app
  5. At 8 weeks my rny bypass plan would be the soft eating and the diet sheet I've been given includes carb options at each meal. At the evening meal, 1 slice of wholegrain bread is one of the carb options i.e. at the evening meal you can choose between 1/2 cup mashed potato/sweet potato/risotto/4-6 wholegrain crackers/1 slice wholegrain bread. The amount of bread you've been told to have does sound a lot? But it always surprises me how different the eating plans are from one doctor to another. Fwiw, I think that 25lbs weight loss in 8 weeks sounds pretty good!

    robot engineering

I'm scheduled to have robotic (do Vinci) surgery on 12/02. It's not for gastric sleeve/bypass but for a different procedure. Like others have said, recovery time is shorter/easier and less risk of infection.

    robot engineering

My gastric bypass was done with the Da Vinci robot. My surgeon was oddly insistent that HE would be the one doing the surgery, not the robot, so I guess a lot of people have concerns about having their surgeries done by a robot. But really, don't get hung up on the concept of a "robot." It's really just a tool that the surgeon uses to do the surgery. It's some of the most advanced surgical equipment available, so I looked at it as a good thing. I wanted my surgeon using the latest and greatest technology.
  8. It's funny, for some reason I thought the opposite would have happened with bypass. In then out. But what you wrote above makes total sense. Thanks!

    Medicare Insurance

Google "medicare requirements for bariatric surgery" you can find lots of info. It paid for mine, and it was a revision from a lap band to RNY. The first office I visited told me incorrectly that Medicare WOULDN'T pay for a revision, so I actually dropped my plan to do it until the lap band slipped and had to come out anyway. I went to a different surgeon whose office said they WOULD pay for it, and long as I met the criteria, and between the Medicare and my supplemental insurance, all I had to pay for was the psych consult and the dietician! I was sweating bullets until all the bills came that I would be stuck since Medicare doesn't do preapprovals-they either pay it or they don't...but they came through.
  10. Dear Forum members I will soon receive a Gastric Bypass due to corona I will be on the waiting list now that the surgeon tells me if I use robot technology (The da Vinci Si HD surgical robot) that I would probably be helped faster my question is it just as safe as the normal operation hoping for a response soon. 11. I’m about three and a half months past my gastric bypass. The weight is coming off steadily but I have episodes of anxiety which cause me to want to eat even though I’m not physically hungry. Lately I have found myself getting up in the middle of the night to eat something. Today I tried listening to relaxation sounds and I fell asleep for one hour but I woke up and I ate chicken salad on crackers. I know I am not hungry because I feel none of the sensations. I feel like my comfort eating mindset is coming back even though I have no capacity to eat excess food. I’m not sure how to handle these feelings. I’m definitely eating enough protein and I have salad every day. Anyone else going through this? Any advice? Thanks for reading.
  12. Are you revising because of reflux, weight gain, or both? Not having restriction wont keep you from losing weight if that is what you are worried about. In fact I lost 12 lbs the first month after revision and weighed 180 at the time. In 2017 I weighed 296 the day of VSG surgery and only lost 14 lbs. You wont overeat because you will get sick and if you dump that is just as bad. ( at least it is for me lol ) I get violently ill and can lasts a few hours. Once it lasted 4 hours. Good luck to you !
  13. I'm worried about the "restriction". A lot of VSG revision patients have said the same thing. They do not feel any restriction. Which goes to show, the mental part of this is so hard. Good for you. Keep up the hard, but good work.

Surgery for someone with no health issues

If I were you I would listen to the first surgeon. Honestly BMI being above 40 by itself is qualification for gastric bypass surgery. The fact that it's a lifelong struggle is another factor. I fought like hell to have surgery because even though I have lifelong chronic illness and disability I didn't have enough of what they considered comorbidities to qualify for surgery under my insurance, except for my BMI. I almost didn't think it would happen but I was desperate for the tool of surgery to get my weight under control. Im pretty sure you have the answer you need already, I just wanted to say- don't let any doctor discourage you from going forward with your journey because you know in your heart you are on the right path.

ADHD and Migraine Meds After Surgery

I wish I had a solid answer but I've never taken medication for my ADHD, I'm also on the Autism spectrum with sensory processing disorder, and OCD. But as well have lifelong chronic illness, immunodeficiency with many medical conditions that started with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. i haven to be careful with what meds I take. As I've multiple chemical sensitivities. And allergies. I can say that XR means it's an extended release drug and will not work in a gastric bypass surgery patient digestive system. I'm going to have to figure that out myself since I need something for POTS/orhtostatic intolerance. Personally? My ADHD treatment? I drink caffeine in the evening and time it a certain way. But dealing with severe chronic fatigue every day. I don't take stimulants. tBH If I time it right I get a bit of a clear head and sleep a little better. Usually around 6pm I drink a 300mg caffeine energy drink. For some reason I had to stop coffee though. So I think some things can go through the system to quick to be metabolized. Probably if I were answering at a better time of day I might make better sense. I hope it's at the least a little helpful.

ADHD and Migraine Meds After Surgery

Hi guys - ive just stumbled across this thread, and am also looking for information regarding stimulant medications and gastric bypass, i was bypassed a few years before i was diagnosed with ADHD, i was prescibed dexamphetimine by my psych, but he has never treated a patient with ADHD who has had a gastric bypass, my stimulants seems to go in, barely work for 2 hours and wear off - i recently switch from IR Dex 5mg (10x per day) as i found myself topping up more often than i should have been, so i requested to switch to a XR, and was prescribed Vyvanse 70mg 1x per day.. this barely touched the sides, and infact i had no increase in focus or motivation, and found that i was struggling to keep my eyes opne at work at 1pm! so ive switched back to IR dex, but the duration of effectiveness per dose is rediculous! i did a UDS for my psych last week, and it appears that ther was alot of amphetamine traces in my urine sample.. anyone had similar? or have any recomendations? i was also wondering, does IR stimulant medication work more effectively or less effectively if your prone to forget to quite often? Thanks, i hope to hear fomr someone soon!!
  22. Backstory- bypass was almost 2 years ago. No complications and took reflux meds for 1-2 months post op as procedure. I had plastic surgery in Feb and had some reflux a few days later (I thought this wasn't possible with bypass but assumed maybe from local swelling and irritation form being intubated). The surgeon had me back on the meds for 1-2 months. It seemed to have gone away until October. It's not bad just that I feel/hear a sensation like bubbles pop almost like drinking carbonated soda (which I haven't touched in over 2 years). So the surgeon has me start them back 2 weeks ago. Here's the scary part. Yesterday morning I drank my protein drink as always and after about 30 min. I had a ache dull pain in-between my should blades. I have already had my gallbladder removed years ago before bypass surgery. The ache goes away and I eat normal foods, no issues except once in awhile during the day I get a very dull ache between my should blades. Then last night I was eating some crackers and got the pain worse but not unbearable but really uncomfortable. I woke up hours later at 3am with the back pain. I had a normal BM and later spit up the foamies/salvia and a threw up little bit of the crackers. Side note-- TMI I have been a little more constipated occasionally so I did have a BM before bed and in the middle of the night. Not diarrhea so I am assuming there's no blockage. I was able to fall back asleep and feel ok this morning just tired from being up for 2 hours. I have had the throwing up foamies maybe 5 times since surgery. I am hoping this is just a random thing. I have been drinking my protein shake slowly without issue this morning. I called the surgeon and they said to stay on liquids for 24-48hours to give my system a rest. Of course I google the symptoms and am now trying not to freak out. If I had a blockage I would assume I would be throwing up my shake now and not have had a BM last night. I am def. not bloated. The office said to go to the ER if it gets worse. Why does this have to happen right before a holiday when no offices are open?? I am trying not to worry that this is just one of those random things that happens to us. I don't have any fever, elevated heart rate etc.

    ADHD Meds And VSG

Hi all, i appear to be a few years behind the conversation, but ive stumbled across this forum after being absent for a few years, 2 years ago i was diagnosed with ADHD and began stimulant medication to manage my symptoms, i was prescribed Dexamphetamine, 5mg tablets - they were working wonders for about 6-12 months, then it was almost as if i woke up one morning and they had minimal to no effect. has anyone else experienced this? im struggling to find any literture regarding interactions between stimulant medicatons gastric bypass, im waiting for a review with my bypasss surgeon in the new year, as he has requested some of his bypass patients come in for a malabsorbtion review, and my psychiatrist who diagnosied my ADHD and prescribes my stimulants has never prescribed to someone who has previously had a gastric bypass, im currently feeling like the medication is going in, having minimal effect, and then being excreted etc. i hope someone has some answers, or can guide me in the direction of good intel! Thanks!

    Just starting..

they're both very safe surgeries these days, so I wouldn't really worry about that piece of it. what most people will tell you is that if you have issues with GERD, bypass is usually the way to go. Otherwise, it pretty much comes down to personal preference. There may be other health issues that would make one surgery more appropriate than the other, but that's the major one. Your surgeon will be able to explain the differences and recommend one or the other depending on your particular health issues (if you have any), although in the end, it's ultimately your choice. I had the bypass and have been very happy with it.
  25. I had my bypass on Sept 1-the reason for choosing this over sleeve was gerd stage 3, previous ulcers and fatty liver disease, stage 2. Gerd was a huge factor for which one to have but they were also very concerned for my fatty liver going to nash and found the bypass to be the quickest way to give my liver a chance to begin reparation, if possible. My biopsies confirmed it and my last fibroscan with labs already showed reduction to stage 1 and repair of the scarring. Gerd still there but not as bad to swallow now with an ability to breathe much, much easier now. Still belching a lot (3 months post-op) but I had a pretty bad case of it and Doc says to give it at least 6 months. They also still have me on heavy 'zoles' (Panzaprazole and omniprazole both for now).
