Good Morning Everyone! QOTD is what is your favorite recipe/foods/shakes for your pre or postoperative surgery? I am still able to eat many foods except for carbs still so I haven't delved into Bariatric recipes yet, but I will share mine once I do! For now I've been trying a lot of different protein shakes from Premier Protein including chocolate vanilla, chocolate peanut butter, cake batter, strawberries and cream and caramel. I love all of them, except for strawberries and cream is not my favorite, but they have been great for when I'm craving dessert! I have one for breakfast in the morning and I mix it with a scoop of Vital Proteins Collagen to keep my skin looking great during this process! I feel like that and my Solgar Biotin and Hair Skin and Nails has already been helping. I am big on skin care amd a Sephora "junkie" and can give anyone advice on that!

does kaiser pay for a tummy tuck?
catwoman7 replied to carlacv's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I don't know about Kaiser specifically, but most insurance companies generally won't cover this unless you've had medical problems with the excess skin that don't respond to traditional treatments - for example, chronic rashes. If you're experiencing something like that, be sure to see a doctor for it and make sure it's documented, because the insurance company will want to see documentation that it's not responding to more conservative treatments before approving the surgery. None of mine was covered - but for some of us, yes, insurance does cover - but again, it really depends on the situation. -
I can easily explain to curious kids why I have cute wobbly angel wings under my arms. But I haven’t figured out a positive name for the leg wobbles. I explained “melted ice cream” but it was not satisfying. Angel legs anyone? There has to be a better comeback. The weather is hot and the kids often go home relating to parents “the most interesting thing of the day.”

Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first
BriarRose replied to chiquitatummy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Maintaining my weight between 160 and 164. Happily so. Will be getting my knee replacements this coming winter !! Newest odd thing that happened ? My weight has been stable for many months - and I am thrilled at being comfortable in my skin ( in all of it's lovely looseness ) - I noted my bras not fitting well. Decided to go in and have a proper fitting. I have been wearing a 40 D - was measured at between a 36 and 38 DD - Huh ? Really ? Tried on said correct sizes depending on brand. And They fit beautifully. Even at 67 years old our bodies change is such strange and unexpected ways, even years after losing the weight ! -
I had my surgery on March 13th, exactly four months ago. At this point, I’ve only lost 32lbs (25 since surgery), which I am totally bummed about. Unlike others, my hunger returned almost immediately. But I have a ton of energy and am able to do so many things I couldn’t do easily before. My clothes fit and I feel more like myself. The down side… My weight loss seems to be dependent on everything being perfect each day (right amount of water, zero sugar, low carb, high protein, high fiber, can’t be sick or injured), which is not easy to do. Even at a calorie deficit, I’m not losing like I should be. Thankfully, of the weight I’ve lost, 19lbs was pure fat. I’ve only lost 2.5lbs of muscle. This is great news and has helped me transition back to the gym over the last few weeks. My heartburn didn’t go away. I actually need to be on omeprezole daily (sometimes twice per day), which is more of an annoyance than a problem. Two weeks ago, right on schedule, my hair started falling out. It’s been traumatic even though I knew it was very likely to happen. When your hair falls out but your weight loss is at a halt, it feels awful. Like what am I doing this for? I know the answer but in my “feel sorry for myself” moments, that’s the question I hear in my head. My body has been changing, and I can see where my skin was stretched out now in the strangest places. This and the hair loss has led to a spike in emotional eating. I’m sure that’s why I’ve been stalled the last 2-3 weeks. Sigh. I feel like a bit of a failure. At the end of the day, I wouldn’t change my decision. I just feel like the first six months are critical and I can’t seem to take advantage of them like I want to. Has this happened to you? Did you still make it to your goal? Any thoughts welcome 🙏

Surgery weight loss calculation
summerseeker replied to KathyLev's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told that you are expected to loose 65% of your excess weight. Any after that is a bonus -
Hello, new member and was curious about a few things.
CarmenG replied to Penguin733's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved in Mexico in 2009, and two years later I lost my gall bladder because all I did was focus on protein and nothing else. I wish I had known that we CAN overdo protein. I wish I'd known that too much protein will kill your gall bladder, your kidneys, and your liver. I wish I'd exercised from the get-go instead of waiting 3 years to finally start getting on that elliptical. It would have given me more muscle tone and less hanging skin. I wish I'd stuck to my exercise instead of letting myself get overwhelmed with all the tragedies I experienced from 2014-2020. I wish I'd gotten therapy instead of looking to Xanax, Ambien, and alcohol to distract me. I'm 23 days out of a revision from a sleeve to a bypass due to weight gain. This journey is going to be much harder than my sleeve. Treasure your sleeve, work with it, respect it. *Edit: You're goal right now should be to hydrate and keep walking. Even just the shuffling around the house is good. It helps prevent blood clots and helps flush out the anesthesia and water retention from the IV fluids. Shuffle around the house 3 or 4 times a day. Count 500 or 600 steps each time. It gets easier. Don't be bending over to grab stuff from the floor. Ask someone to help or get a $10 extended arm grabber thingy. That helped me a lot when I would drop my sock or my vitamin on the floor. 😊 -
My Solgar Vitamin B12 Sublingual and vitamin C were 20-33% off for my preop! Solgar Biotin and vital Proteins Collagen powder both at 36% off usual price for my skin/hair/nails. Premier protein shakes cake batter and chocolate peanut butter were 30% off. Definetely stocked up! You're welcome for the reminder! It's temping not to buy more things 🤣🤣

I had a serious case of buyer's remorse during my second week post op. I even thought, "I should've just stayed the way I was!" But I am feeling better. I try to do a lot of reading about the bypass and revisions. I'm a sleeve to bypass revision. I'm 23 days out and at a weight stall. I'm finding it hard to consume more than 56-64 oz of water a day. I'm craving caffeine like crazy. And I'm experiencing constipation and not sure how to add more fiber without adding more carbs. It's tricky getting just enough of this and not too much of that. What's helping my mindset, though, is looking back at my very first pic (starting weight) and looking at my most recent. I haven't lost much (comparatively speaking), but I feel better. I can wash the dishes, cook dinner for my daughter, and bathe without running out of breath or having my back aching and burning. I can dress myself without having to sit on the bed. My skin looks fantastic. Focus on all of the things that have gotten better since your pre-op diet. Focus on the future weight loss you'll experience (even if it's going slower than you'd like). Focus on things you'll be able to consume in a couple of months. You can look up recipes and save them for month 2 and month 3 and so on. Also, I don't know if you pray, but if you do, pray for peace of mind. All of these things help me, and they may help you as well.

JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES
BonJoviLover1987 replied to Mira88's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm sure you made the right decision. I wish you all the best. I also had my surgery on June 5th. I've only lost 11 lbs so far. I need to start walking. I have a hard time getting going because I have neuropathy down my whole right leg into my foot. I know that if I start walking I'll loose more weight. -
Portion Sizes (and the Dreaded Foaming)
Deep6 replied to Deep6's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Spoke to my nutritionist. He made a number of suggestions, including having some warm broth to "prime the pump." He wasn't bothered by the idea of dark meat (Ala the turkey leg, deboned and stripped of skin, that led to my frothing/foaming). So, today, for lunch, we went to a good local Japanese fish house- had Miso soup, which I rarely order, some seaweed salad and a few pieces of fatty tuna sashimi. Wonderful, no problem. He also said that lean meat in the red meat department can be a problem. Which isn't an issue for me, because my favorite steak is a ribeye, bone in, and my favorite part of that steak is the rib-eye cap, which is basically stripped of all fat and binding before preparing. Not sure I'm quite ready for that, and I'll probably only have a few bites, but as I add to my selection of foods to eat, I'm getting happier! Yay! Last night, I made chicken sueng (the chicken with chopped up scallion, water chestnuts, normally wrapped in lettuce. I didn't wrap it but had a little romaine on the side, along with peas as a side dish. I think I'm still well under my calorie limit and taking my supplements. Glad to report that enjoying real food is actually possible!!! -
I am 22 months PO, I am 40 and fair-skinned and my scars are minimal enough I have to look for them. The only prominent scar on my abdomen is from 2014 when I had my gallbladder removed.

Food Before and After Photos
ms.sss replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
a few "meals" the past few days. - egg and cheese quesadilla with some buffalo wing chips - chicken fingers made out of leftover fried chicken drumsticks (removed meat from bone, battered and deep fried) with some ketchup - store bought sour dough baguette slices more leftover chicken (skin removed) tossed in mayo and seasonings and topped with raw asparagus. **calorie count in this pic depicts what i actually ATE vs the initial portion. - prosciutto slices and extra old cheddar cheese. -
WOW, good job, are you seeing loose skin?

When scars are purple they are still healing, vitamin E oil used topically can help a lot, but you must be devoted to using it twice daily. Once your scars are healed, if you are not satisfied, medical tattooing might be a viable option, they will match your skin tone and color and cover/blend the scars. There are regular tattoo artists that can do this too, obviously, look at their portfolios, otherwise, medical tattooists are trained specifically in scar cover, blending, camouflage as well as other things like creating a nipple, where one never was or was lost. A lot of people get their skin removal scars cover this way. Hope that helps. Some great examples from a training studio are under the Instagram name elevateyoustudio_medicaltattoo

February 2023 surgery dates!
Rdy4Change replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tomorrow, it'll be five months since my surgery. I can share that the first two months were the hardest. I now find myself eating intuitively. The only food that I avoid is bread. My weight loss has slowed down, but continues to steadily decrease. On my surgery date, I was at 229 pounds. I currently weigh 173. The biggest change is that my knees and back are no longer in pain. I am able to work out without any issues. The only down side is that I have begun to lose my hair in clumps. While this has been frustrating, I am so thankful for this surgery. I feel so much more comfortable in my own skin! I hope all my February surgery pals are having a positive journey as well! -
That was me too. I bounced between 60-75kg (healthy weight to overweight range) most of my life but peri menopause then menopause & suddenly I was obese. Could lose a couple of kilos but would take several weeks & that as on those extremely low calories diets of 500 calories a day too. I’d gain the weight back like in days. The surgery boosted my metabolism & I keep it burning by eating regularly now - no more meal skipping for me which was how I used to try to maintain my weight. The fatigue will improve as you begin to eat more each day. Try an electrolyte drink to give you a boost on days you need a little more energy. You may be able to start some fruit soon. I think I could from my third month. Check with your dietician. The sad news the weights won’t help with your loose skin. It will only help with the muscular structure under your skin which has been stretched out. My arms are quite nicely toned from using resistance bands. I even get compliments which I think is hilarious as my loose skin is still there but then I don’t wave my arms about too much 😉. Only way to get it rid of it is surgery. All the best with your progress.

I'm 3 years post-op. I did absolutely nothing to treat my incisions and I have no visible scars now. If I look really closely (I had to refer to old pictures to see where the scars were so I could tell where to look), the skin is ever so slightly raised where the incisions were, but the color is no different than the surrounding skin.

My losses slowed down about the same times as yours. Once I went nearly three months before I lost again. I tend to go down in blocks of 5lbs at once. I try and walk more. I am thinking of going swimming again but the loose skin is holding me back. Try and change things up a bit. Finds some new foods. Expanding my diet like being on holiday has really been good for my weight loss. I think that at some point we have to call it a day but I am sure you will go further than you are at the moment, My problem is that I am not too bothered if I stay at this weight.

I'm also super, super fair skinned. I had a different laparoscopic abdominal surgery about 20 years ago and it took a few years for the scars to fade to pink. About 5 years afterward, they weren't particularly noticeable unless you were looking for them. They've never entirely faded.

.I had my sleeve done on May third. I am 60 and have been in menopause for 8 years. I have never been heavy til menopause happened. 3 weeks before my surgery i started my pre diet. I ate 540 calories a day of protein and very low carbs. On my surgery day I had only lost 1 pound :(. I feel that with age also comes the slower metabolism. I am doing okay with the weight lose. I am a vegetarian, so it is interesting not getting to eat any fruit. But I am sticking to the strict diet given by my doctor. Only 1/4 cup a meal. I have been lift 5 pound arm weights as I know my arms are going to have alot of excess skin. It is strange to see my skin as it appears I am like a deflating ballon :). It is alot to get used to. My fatique is off the chart, but I am doing the best I can. One day at a time

Before I had surgery my life was miserable. Couldnt walk far at all. Looking after myself was such a big drain. I had come to the end of myself and didnt care if the very worst happened cos I was already living it. You know how hard it is. Booking in for the surgery gave me something that I had not had for a very long time ........... Hope. Closer to the operation I was scared but also excited. I had the gastric bypass May last year. Since then I lost 53kg or 116 pounds. I know I still have a way to go but I am feeling so much better in my own skin. I am more mobile and fitter than I have been in years. I am off all diabetic medications including insulin. I am also off my blood pressure and gerd medications too. I have not had any complications. No regrets.

I use whole milk cottage cheese in my eggs & shredded cheese. I cook it right with the eggs. I had VSG June 1st & I can still only eat about half an egg (Before anyone comes at me for using WHOLE milk dairy, I've been okay'd to do so because my body tolerates it & I'd rather have real fat then fake forever chemicals in my body from the low flat crap, it's my health journey, feel free to do as you please with yours.) I also like adding Avocado to my eggs & I eat cottage cheese & Avocado with salt & pepper every single day. It's my lunch & I love it. So yummy! You can also mix cottage cheese with canned fruit (no skins) I love Peaches. Very delicious 😋

loose skin after gastric sleeve
pintsizedmallrat replied to John40's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Focus on what the procedure will do for your health; it sounds like you're literally doing this to improve your quality of life and even save it. Excess skin is not going to harm you in most cases. You'll have the rest of your extended life to worry about that.
